You may like to leave the kit as a digital resource and print activities on an as needs basis. Alternatively, the whole kit could be printed and each activity prepared so it’s ready to go when you need. W E I The Kit is divided into Four Sections: Sections 1 - 2 provide you with information for assembling the kit as well as instructions on how to prepare each of the games and/or activities. V E Section 3 provides some lesson ideas for introducing and teaching digraphs. Section 4 provides the activities, games and worksheets for each of the digraphs. A master word list of all words used and suggested in each of the units is provided. A digraph tracking sheet has also been included, which can be used to record when digraphs have been introduced and taught. R P This section is then split into 8 units for each of the digraphs. Each unit also has an overview sheet that includes the words used in the unit, a word list of more words with the focus sound as well as sentences that can be used for dictation practice. The units can be taught sequentially (as this is the order I introduce each digraph) or alternatively you can access a unit as you cover it in your teaching program. I hope this kit makes the teaching of digraphs and phonics a bit easier for you, and your students enjoy the activities. www.topnotchteaching.com 5 The Ultimate Digraph Teaching Kit - Melinda Crean Section One: How to Assemble the Kit All parts of the bingo game are made and ready to use (right). W E I V E R P I have the word building sheets laminated to use with markers as well as on paper so they can be easily copied. All playing cards are printed and laminated ready to use when needed (right). www.topnotchteaching.com 10 The Ultimate Digraph Teaching Kit - Melinda Crean Section Two: Preparation This section describes how each of the different parts of a unit can be used and how the activities are to be prepared. Each Digraph Unit includes: Master word list; Digraph tracking sheet; Word lists; Dictation sentences; Posters; Word wall cards; Worksheets; Bingo game: simple and advanced; and Phonics playing games. W E I V E Master Word List The master word list includes all words that are used in a unit as well as the additional words suggested that include the focus sound. This can be used to track the date the words are used and taught. R P Digraph Tracking Sheet The tracking sheet is used to assist you with recording when you have taught each of the digraphs. The sheet can be printed and kept with your planning documents. Word Lists The word lists include additional words that have the focus sound. Dictation Sentences 10 sentences for each sound have been included and can be used for dictation practice. Posters The posters can be used for display in your classroom. These are best enlarged to A3 (Ledger) size and then laminated for durability. Word Wall Cards The word wall cards can be cut and laminated and used to add to your word wall or as flash cards. Worksheets The worksheets are designed to be copied and used for individual work or in small groups/centers. www.topnotchteaching.com 11 The Ultimate Digraph Teaching Kit - Melinda Crean Section Three: Mini Lessons These mini lessons are a great way to introduce and consolidate your teaching of phonics and digraphs. Some of the ideas are appropriate for younger children who are just learning about the sounds in language, while the other techniques are good for students who may be experiencing difficulties or who have missed being taught the skills needed for reading and spelling. W E I Firstly, it's important to know what the essential reading skills are. What is blending? Blending is being able to push sounds together to build words. For example, /s/ /a/ /t/ = sat V E What is segmenting? Segmenting is the ability to be able to pull apart individual sounds in words. For example: sat: /s/ /a/ /t/. R P What is Manipulation? Phoneme manipulation is being able to insert and delete sounds in words. This skill is important as it allows readers to test alternatives for spellings that represent more than one sound. (Sounds~Write, 2013) Listening for Sounds in Words This is a really great activity to use with younger children who are just starting out with the concept of reading. For example, say, “I see the ‘sun’, what’s the first sound you hear in the word sun”. When starting out with activities such as this it’s important to choose words that start with a sound that can be held, such as the /s/ in sun. You may also need to really hold the first sound to emphasise it to younger children. When children are able to identify the initial sound, then move on to try the end and middle sounds. Again, sun is good to use as you can hold the final sound to emphasise it. Other words that you might like to try could include: sat, sit, mat, man, map, nap. Think of short 3 letter words that have a consonant, vowel and consonant (CVC). You can also play games like ‘eye-spy’ with younger students. Quite often I’ll say: “I spy a mmmuuugg”. Students need to then blend the sounds together to tell me the word. Choose words that also have sounds that can be held as it makes it easier for the little ones to be able to hear for the word. www.topnotchteaching.com 15 The Ultimate Digraph Teaching Kit - Melinda Crean Section Four: Digraph Units This section contains all of the activities, games and worksheets for each digraph.
