Summer Camps - 2016 Friendswood Community Education June 6th – June 30th ONLINE REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT AVAILABLE May 2nd 9 AM https://fisd.revtrak.net/tek9.asp All Summer Camps are held Monday-Thursday All classes meet at the Jr. High School unless otherwise noted in the course description. Please use the front entrance only. Parents must accompany their children into and from the building. Teachers will meet students and parents each day of class and escort to the classroom. Parents must pick up students promptly when their child's activities finish each day. All supplies provided unless stated otherwise in the camp description. Supervision is not provided afterward. All camps are coed unless otherwise stated in course description. Changes or additions to the brochure will be posted online. Class size strictly limited. Lunch supervision provided for $10 per week, per child from 11 am to 1 pm. Your child MUST bring their own lunch. CASH ONLY PLEASE! June 6-9 WEEK 1 (Monday-Thursday) Parents – Please use Alpha Code for each class - ex: Art Explorers A01 Art Explorers - A (age 6-12) A01 10-11:30 am June 6-9 $90 L. Marx – This class offers NEW and different projects from previous Art Explorers classes. Students will work with a former FISD Art teacher to create new projects in a different medium each day using oil pastels, watercolors, clay and more! Supplies are included and students are encouraged to take the class as many times as they like, since projects are not repeated. See also Weeks 2, 3, and 4. Balls, Balls & More Balls - A (age 9-14) B01 12:30-2 pm June 6-9 $40 T. Crosby – You will have a fun time with popular games like Castle Ball, Bucket Ball, Dodgeball, Maupball and many more. Come join the fun! See also Week 2. Camp Einstein (age 5-12) C01 9-12 pm June 6-9 $160 C. Bielamowicz – Engineering & Science – Transform into an engineer with hands-on projects like designing rubber band race cars, roller coasters, and helicopters. Get to know your world on an elemental level by becoming a budding scientist who explores the science behind slime, blood typing, and build rockets to launch into the sky! This class is perfect for the curious minded student who loves to build and create! Candy Bouquet - A (age 6-12) C02 8:30-10 am June 6-9 $45 K. Jerath – Enjoy making special candy bouquets for your loved ones. They are fun to make and amazing gifts for friends and family. We will use a variety of materials to make the bouquets in addition to candies. We will also make sweet candy topiaries. Supplies provided. See also Week 3. Create with Duct Tape - A (age 6-12) C03 10-12:30 pm June 6-9 $47 K. Jerath – Students will have fun creating many new projects using duct tape. Make your own iPad covers, wallets, bookmarks, handbags, clipboards, and many more projects. See also Week 4. Dance Animation (age 9-11) D01 2-3:30 pm June 6-9 $85 Dance Expressions, M. Guiliano – Learn how to dance with acting and character animation. This fun and creative class is taught by a former Disney dancer. Wear your PE shoes. Dancing Stars - A (age 7-9) D02 12:30-2 pm June 6-9 $85 Dance Expressions, M. Guiliano – Dance class with a mixture of Jazz, Hip Hop, Animation and lots of fun! Class taught by an experienced dancer who danced for Disney World. Wear your PE shoes. See also Week 3. Fiber Arts Camp (age 8 & up) F01 8:30-‐11:30 am June 6-‐9 $80 S. Miller – Creative Wool Crafts – You will learn how to go from wool to finished projects by creating such items as small purses, pillows, stuffed animals, etc., using different fiber arts. You will practice weaving on Ms. Miller’s looms, spin yarns using her spinning wheel, learn needle felting and wet felting. After learning some of the basic techniques, you will use your creativity to make your own unique items. Great Tennis A (age 6-‐12) See Week 4 for Description 8-‐9:15 am June 6, 8, 13, 15 $100 Knitting (age 8 & up) K01 1-‐4 pm June 6-‐9 $80 S. Miller – Beginners will learn the knit stitch, cast on, bind off. We will make a bookmark, and depending on your speed, you may knit a patch that can be made into a small bag, eyeglass holder or coin purse. If you are already a knitter, come and learn the next steps, including purling and yarn over. Class size strictly limited! Needles and yarn provided. Mad Science - A (age 6-12) M01 12:30-2:30 pm June 6-9 $65 K. Jerath – Students will learn how to make giant bubbles, bouncing bubbles, bubbles within bubbles, lava lamps, glitter slime, home crafts, rocket cars, spinning tops, etc. See also Week 2. Mandarin Chinese & Fun - I (age 5-12) M02 8-10 am June 6-9 $40 L. Lu – Students will use songs, chants, stories, games, and crafts to immerse themselves into a fun packed culturally rich environment while learning some basic communicative Chinese. Topics covered will include greetings, numbers, family, pets, etc., and they will be presented in forms of popular children’s songs and chants. This is a great way to expose children to a diverse culture, and grow an appreciation of different languages as the world turns into a global village. See also Week 2. Manners Matter (age 4-7) M03 10-11:30 am June 6-9 $69 L. Westfall – 1, 2, 3, Let’s Eat – Join us for a fun, interactive, activity filled camp! We will learn social skills and etiquette that will last a lifetime: basic introductions, social graces for public places and dining etiquette how to set the table, table manners, and how to use your fork, knife and napkin. The program is specifically written for children by the Protocol School of Washington, D.C., that trains national diplomats. Catherine the Mannerly Cat will come along to help teach the children kind and courteous behavior. Wetmore – A: The White House, B: The Colosseum - Join us for a fun filled time playing Minecraft on the computer whether you are a beginner or advanced player. Build historical buildings within the Minecraft Edu environment while focusing on new buildings each camp. See also Weeks 2, 3, and 4. Pickleball - A (age 7-12) P01 8-9:30 am June 6-9 $58 Space City Pickleball, D. Charvoz – Let’s play Pickleball! The racquet sport sweeping the nation has come to Friendswood! Kids will learn the history of Pickleball and the basic rules and strategies of this super easy-toplay game. Students will practice serving, dinking, and volleying through daily drills on indoor courts. Instructors will reinforce positive character traits as students interact with their peers. Bring a drink, wear comfortable clothes and lace-up sneakers. Parents are invited to join us the last day of class for the final competition. We may even invite YOU onto the court. Westfall - Cooking is an art, science and magic rolled into 1 recipe! Learn kitchen math, safety, history of foods, and how to read a recipe. Take your made-from-scratch entrée or dessert home to bake for family enjoyment. Supplies, recipes, chef’s hat, and placemat included! Menu includes my First Apple Pie, Funky Quesadillas, Lasagna, and Peanut Butter Krinkle Cookies. Put on your virtual engineering hat and explore robotics, rocketry, and more! Meets at the High School, 702 Greenbriar. Use entrance facing student parking lot – a Community Education sign or banner will be displayed in the window at the entrance you should use. Spy Gadgets & Superhero Circuits (age 8-12) S06 12-3 pm June 6-9 $140 Action Potential Learning - S. Pond – Learn the science of spies and superheroes! Build real working gadgets using basic principles of engineering, science and math. Students will learn applied principles of science and engineering to build a cool gadget or circuit each day using breadboards, conductive tape, buzzers, LEDs, UV, filters, and more. Students will build a number of gadgets including: a cipher disk, UV activated ink, a superhero power ring, a motion sensing power charging box, a superhero night-vision mask, a “laser” wrist band, a telegraph machine that uses real Morse code, and a secret trip spy alarm. Best of all, student-built projects go home at the end of camp so they can continue learning at home! Absolutely NO schedule change or camp substitutions unless Com Ed cancels a class! Reichardt – Theme Park Thrills – This camp takes you on a thrilling adventure building amusement park themed models. Spend time visiting the Wizard World by building your favorite wizard and his magical owl! Build and give your despicable yellow movie characters a thrilling roller coaster ride with LEGO® bricks! Get your amusement park ticket stamped as you turn games, food, rides and attractions into exciting model builds! All this and more awaits! At the end of the week, all campers will go home with a custom Minifigure and camp t-shirt! Campers will explore while building fantasy spaceships, speeders, droids and more. Camp stations include LEGO® Star Wars ™ themed crafts, challenges, and creative building time with our amazing assortment of bricks and sets. Lowe – Learn basic cake decorating techniques and make yummy treats to eat and share, including cakes, cupcakes and cake pops. Look out Food Network – we will have our own cake challenge! Bielamowicz - CSI Forensics – Put on your detective hat and become a CSI investigator with hands-on projects exploring forensic investigation. Learn the science behind fingerprinting, solve a crime with pH testing, perform a blood and DNA analysis, become a spy, and much more! This is perfect for the curious minded student who loves to use their hands and see how things work! Cookie-Licious - A (age 6-12) C06 10-12 pm June 13-16 $65 K. Jerath – Have a BLAST decorating cookies with candies and chocolates. Dance/Drill - A (age 6 & up) D03 9-12 pm June 13-16 $42 Wranglerettes – Learn dance routines and how to cooperate with others to perform team skills from a real team member from Friendswood High School. Wear shorts and tennis shoes. Parent program at last class. See also Week 4. Kid’s Glass Painting (age 8-12) K02 8:30-10 am June 13-16 $47 K. Jerath – Students will learn how to paint on glass, make glass frames with flowers or butterflies, paint and personalize glass plates and ceramic mugs. Kid’s Yoga - A (age 6-9) K03 9:30-11 am June 13-16 $58 A. Bendixen – Through music and movement the students will learn basic yoga poses that will stretch and strengthen them. Mindfulness, relaxation, and breathing techniques will be taught in a playful way to help the students focus and release stress in their busy daily lives. We will have fun in a noncompetitive environment. To learn more about the program, go to kiddingaroundyoga.com/Anne. Please bring a yoga mat to class if you have one. We will have some extra mats. See also Week 4. Kid’s Yoga – B (age 10-‐14) K04 12-‐1:30 pm June 13-‐16 $58 A. Bendixen – Through music and movement the students will learn basic yoga poses, relaxation and breathing techniques. The class will resemble an adult yoga class but with a playful twist. Mindfulness will be our focus in this fun, noncompetitive class. Next Generation Robotics - I (age 8-12) N01 12-3 pm June 13-16 $140 Action Potential Learning - S. Pond – Dream up the coolest robot you can imagine - then create it! Students will become the next great Lego® robotics engineers by using mechanical and engineering skills, and programming logic to program uniquely functioning robots. Students will design, program, and build complex robots to function in various ways - from battling bots to completing obstacles. Students will work in pairs to design their own robots and build unique programs, and their skills will be tested in a new challenge each day. Using the latest in Lego Mindstorms® EV3 Robotics, students will create and present their fully functional robots each day by applying sophisticated programming skills learned in this camp. Reichardt – Jurassic Brick Land – Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Put on your hiking boots and camouflage . . . you are about to enter Jurassic Brick Land! Campers will build a world that comes to life with gentle Brontosaurus, ferocious Velociraptor, terrifying T. Rex, and more. We will learn about amazing dinosaurs that lived during the Jurassic period, and other extinct, prehistoric animals that roamed the earth and swam the seas during that era and millions of years later. Show us your building skills using our specialized project kits? Come learn, build and play at Jurassic Brick Land camp! At the end of the week, all campers will go home with a custom Minifigure and camp t-shirt! Burke – Students will explore the world of theater with improv games and stage makeup including special effects (fairies, zombies, etc.) and other projects such as puppets, skits or mini plays. Dancing Stars - B (age 7-9) D04 12:30-2 pm June 20-23 $85 Dance Expressions, J. Smith – Dance class with a mixture of Jazz, Hip Hop, Animation and lots of fun! This class is taught by an experienced dancer. Wear your PE shoes. Environmental Creations - A (age 5-12) E01 9-12 pm June 20-23 $57 T. Hrabovsky – Watch movies with environmental themes such as Wall-E, The Bee Movie, The Lorax, and Hoot. We will create movie inspired crafts using recycled and natural items and make fun snacks to munch or take home. Enjoy a movie, create a craft, and have a snack all at the same camp. Smith – Boys and girls will get to strut their stuff and wiggle to Kidz Bop hits while learning Hip Hop. This high energy class is very popular with age appropriate moves and lots of fun! Next Generation Robotics - II (age 8-12) N02 12-3 pm June 20-23 $140 Action Potential Learning-S. Pond – In this Part 2 Lego® EV3 robotics, students will expand upon the physics, engineering, and mathematics principles learned in robotics building and programming to compete in exciting new challenges. From launching projectiles to building autonomous robot games, students will test their own engineering designs and programming skills in daily challenges. Students do not need to take Robotics I to be eligible to take this class. T-Shirts & Shoe Painting (age 6-12) T01 8-10 am June 20-23 $50 K. Jerath – Learn how to tie dye your T-shirts and nonskid socks. You will paint your tennis shoes to make them one of a kind with lots of bling. Please bring white canvas tennis shoes (your size).
