Welcome
Welcome to our Conservation Areas. The Conservation Authority owns more
than 1,800 hectares of land including beaches along Lake Huron,
campgrounds, day-use parks, wetlands and forests. A wide range of
recreational activities are available on these lands including swimming,
boating, hiking, bird watching, camping, fishing and hunting.
Our three family campgrounds feature over 500 serviced sites available for
both seasonal and overnight camping. We are committed to making your
visit with us enjoyable. This guide will be an invaluable tool to help you make
the most of your stay with us. It has been designed to answer the common
questions and to let you know a bit about your host. I hope you enjoy your
visit with us at the St. Clair.

A Few Campfire Do’s
and Don’ts
Do:
• use only the existing fire pit on your site
• in order to help stop the spread of the
emerald ash borer, please purchase your
firewood from the Conservation Area
• keep campfires small; they are easier to
control

• let your fire burn down to ashes before
putting it out. This reduces the amount of
charred wood left in the fire pit
• make sure your fire is totally out before you
leave your campsite or turn in for the night
- fires left to burn out on their own may
appear out, but often get stirred up by
the wind
Do Not:
• take decaying deadwood from conservation
area wood lots
• bring in fire wood from outside the
Conservation Area
• leave your campfire unattended - this is
extremely hazardous; it’s also a waste of
wood if you’re not there to enjoy it
• make additional fire pits on your campsite
• burn anything other than wood - do not
burn food scraps, plastics or diapers in
your fire
• build a fire if it is extremely windy

• decaying deadwood plays an important

Don’t Move Firewood
Protect our Ash Trees — Don’t Move Firewood
Help in the fight to slow Down the Emerald
Ash Borer
Firewood can carry small but harmful
hitchhikers that are often hidden in the bark
or wood. The damage caused by invasive
species such as the emerald ash borer can
expand exponentially when they get rides
from families on vacation - even if it is only a
few kilometres away.
If everyone takes care of our forests we will be
able to enjoy them for years to come.
Cycling
Cycling is a great activity for the whole
family. But remember, sharing the road with
cars requires some thought and consideration
on behalf of you the biker, as well as the
driver of the vehicle.
Remember to obey the rules of the road
including travelling in the proper direction on
one way roads. Racing is not permitted and
cyclists must yield to pedestrians. Keep your
bike locked up when not in use, even on your
campsite. Remember to wear your helmet.
Recycling at St. Clair
Recycling bins are located near the garbage
depots and are appropriately signed for
recycle materials. Please do not throw
garbage into the recycling bins.

Conservation For Kids
Public health rules prohibit domestic animals
in designated swimming areas or in
washrooms and shower areas.
Help keep our conservation areas clean,
please clean up after your pet.
Let your children know that they can get help
from park staff.
Park roads are used by young children for
cycling, however they should know the safety
rules.

DO NOT pick the flowers. The opportunity to
produce seeds is lost and the species’ future
may be threatened. Many species of
butterflies, moths, insects and birds are
dependent on a flower’s nectar for food. Some
species are so specialized that they make use
of only one type of plant. If the host plant
disappears, so does any wildlife species that is
dependent on it. Leave the flowers for park
wildlife and the enjoyment of other visitors.
Please take only a picture.
Keep Your Children Safe
Always supervise your child’s trip to our
washrooms, beaches and trails.
If you’ve lost a child, inform area staff at
once. They can ensure that a search is
quickly organized.
Know where your children are, what they
area wearing and set a time when they
should be back at the campsite.
Get the last name and campsite number of
any new friends your children have made.
Always leave one adult on the campsite.
10
If you think you’ve
had a brush with
poison ivy, follow
these simple steps:
Wash all exposed
areas with cold
running water as
soon as you can
reach a stream, lake or garden hose. If you
can do this within five minutes, the water
may keep the plant’s invisible oil urushiol
from contacting your skin and spreading to
other parts of your body. Within the first 30
minutes, soap and water are helpful.
If you know you have been exposed and
have developed severe reactions in the past,
consult your doctor.
Watershed Report Cards
The Conservation Authority has completed a
set of Watershed Report Cards for the 14
subwatersheds in the St. Clair region.
This region has been affected by urban,
industrial and agricultural development but
it supports an extraordinary number of rare
plant and animal species. In the St. Clair
Region over 80 endangered, threatened or
special concern species are recognized under
federal or provincial legislation. Likewise,
although the region has very little forest
cover, it contains many significant tree and
bird species that do not thrive in most of
Ontario.
The St. Clair Region hosts a mosaic of
farmland and forests, urban areas,
industrialization and natural areas with
extraordinary biological diversity. Residents,
agencies and municipalities must act to
protect and improve this region of Canada
which is “uniquely St. Clair”.
For a complete set of Watershed Report Cards
visit our website at www.scrca.on.ca.
10,000 students each year get to poke
through mud, hold a frog or measure the
quality of water through the Conservation for
Kids program. The Conservation Authority
offers 28 different programs tied to the
curriculum taught in the schools. The
majority of the outdoor conservation
education programs are operated out of the
Lorne C. Henderson Conservation Area. They
are also offered at the Wawanosh Wetlands,
Strathroy Wetlands and the A.W. Campbell
Conservation Areas and at the Dow
Wetlands. Many of the education programs
are supported by donations from businesses
and organizations.
Tree Planting
The Authority has planted more than
3.3 million trees since 1980.
Turtle Surveys
Conservation Authority staff and volunteers
regularly undertake a turtle survey on the
East Branch of the Sydenham River. In
particular, surveyors look for two turtle
Species at Risk: the spiny softshell turtle and
the northern map turtle. In 2010 staff and
volunteers were able to spot 31 spiny softshell

Our Mission
SCRCA Celebrates 50 years
On January 12, 2011, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority celebrated
its 50th year of providing watershed management to the region that includes
most of Lambton County, western Middlesex County and northern Chatham Kent. Over that
time, we have developed a comprehensive watershed program for a healthier, safer and
sustainable community that includes habitat restoration (forests, wetlands and prairie);
environmental education; water quality and quantity monitoring; flood and erosion damage
reduction programs and projects; landowner grant programs to enhance watershed health;
land acquisition program to protect critical habitats; community conservation projects that
involve schools, volunteers and community groups; and development of outdoor recreation
facilities so the public can enjoy the tremendous watershed resources in our region.
Conservation Authority Programs Include:
• Flood Damage Reduction
• Drinking Water Source Protection
• Wildlife Habitat Restoration
• Recreation
• Erosion Control
• Water Quality
• Woodlot Management
• Outdoor Education
• Hazard Land Planning
• Tree Planting
• Species at Risk
The St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation
“The St. Clair Region Conservation
Authority has as its mission, to
provide leadership through
coordination of watershed planning,
implementation of resource
management programs and
promotion of conservation awareness,
in cooperation with others.”
