PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Tradition
Tradition comes alive with quilting. Traditional blocks can become alive in sophistication
and modernization by using color variations such as Wendy Mathson showed us in April or
adding twists as we have previously seen from items by Java House with the hanging blocks and
playful animals stealing them. Adding the unexpected adds interest and humor. The traditional
fades to the background as personality is presented. Modernization as seen by Sandi Sawa
Hazelwood brought us new insights for clean lines and minimalistic presentations.
Lemonade quilting is working with the things you have on hand, with the things you have
been given. Lemonade quilting is scrap quilting at its finest. I assist my lemonade quilting by
using my Lumber Yard pre-cuts. If I am feeling sluggish or without specific inspiration, I go to
my Lumber Yard and pull out a size (remember, it’s precut) and get ready to have a quilt top
fairly soon. My bag of 2x5s quickly yields Rail Fence blocks for assembly.
We will get great inspiration at this meeting with our annual Round Robin Teaching
Presentations. The school year may be coming to a close for traditional students, but that
doesn’t mean we stop learning. Summer is a great time to become a mentor to a younger
person and teach them quilting – or to teach someone else a quilting technique. What a great
way to meet new friends and share our wonderful hobby.
Lemonade or Mordern or Traditional, our quilting styles continue to be challenged and
updated with experience and the excellence of our teachers and presenters.

Thanks to everyone who turned in
finished quilts at the April Guild
meeting. Special thanks to Lois for
contributing an entire box of flannel quilt
tops. Upcoming dates for Linus
workshops are Monday, May 2, Tuesday,
May 17 and Monday, June 6. Cindy is
planning to do a lot of quilting at the San
Diego Fair in June. We need to make sure
we have enough tops ready to
go. Please bring any completed tops to
the Guild meeting. Thanks to everyone
who continues to work on Linus
throughout the year..

Yarn for Ernie
This is a reminder that Ernie can always
use more yarn. It’s better if it is not wool so
it’s washable. He makes blankets out of
donated yarn and gives them to Project
Linus. You can give me any yarn you are
willing to part with. Small balls are fine,
they make nice stripes. Thank you in
advance.

A Hundred Years Ago Today
The following members are celebrating their
birthday this month:
Only one more month until we reveal our challenge
quilts or quilt blocks at the June meeting. Hope you are
having fun with this and are discovering some new
things about life in 1916. Today's L.A. Times travel
section had an article about the 1916 Easter Uprising in
Dublin by Irish rebels seeking independence from Great
Britain. A lot of destruction was caused. I've also come
across British WWI recruitment posters urging the Irish
to abandon the Easter Uprising fight and to fight against
the Germans. There are certainly other, more lighthearted things going on in 1916, such as film stars like
"The Vamp," Theda Bara and "America's Sweetheart,"
Mary Pickford.

This month's Opportunity Quilt will have you
marching toward Fourth of July. This
wonderful quilt was made in its entirety by
Eleanor Smith of Canyon Country, California,
in memory of 9/11. It measures 55" by 46"
and is beautifully pieced and appliqued. The
backing is an all-over Old Glory unfurled in
the breeze. It's a stunner. Please support our
fundraising efforts by buying a ticket.

Our program in May will be a round robin featuring some of our very
talented members. Becky Johnson will show us a unique way to create
flying geese. Sheryl King will share with us the construction of Strippy
Placemats. Cindy Feagle will show us how to construct that wonderful
ruler and cutting bag. Chris B will demonstrate the use of various quilting
rulers. It should be a very fun and educational meeting.

“America’s Sweetheart”
Lois sent in this great idea:
Here’s an idea for a quick way of making a pet bed: Make a casing as for a pillow. Fit the casing
into a trash basket or clip it to your table edge. As you quilt and work your way through your
projects, fill the basket (and thus the casing) with your clipped trash. Include normal waste such as
threads, batting, selvages, and those edging trims when sizing units and blocks. Once full enough,
remove the casing from the basket and stitch up that final side. The pet bed is complete, without a
lot of stuffing hassles. If you have no use for a pet bed, I’m sure Audrey would take them for use by
Kennel Comforts.

“My Dear Quilters,
This is a tough email to write because so many of you have become friends over the nearly 6-1/2
years of this project. It’s been a great success. To date, because of all of you, we have received 3,804
quilts. It’s been really quite remarkable. Now comes the hard part, saying goodbye.
I have accepted a position with an international clinical research company and will be leaving the
ADCS and UCSD. I’ve worked at UCSD for 13-1/2 years so this is no easy decision or easy departure.
My last day is this Friday, April 22. Rest assured that the quilt project is not going away. Many people
want to see it survive and have volunteered to ensure its future.
As of Monday, April 25 your contact will be Sherry Cater: scater@ucsd.eduwho at present is out of
town but will be back next week. Her backup is Carolyn Revta crevta@ucsd.edu, both of whom are
cc’d on this email. I know that they will take fine care of all of you and the project.
I cannot begin to tell you what an honor it has been to work with all of you these many years. Your
commitment, your quilts, your staunch support has meant the world to me and I will not forget you
and what you have done to bring a ray of light into the dark days of Alzheimer’s. Not a week goes by
that the study coordinators don’t tell me what a difference your quilts make. I am proud of you all and
honored that I had the opportunity to work with you.
