Paige, TX · Today I lost my wonderful, precious husband of almost 30 yrs. Charles and Chris lost the man he is so proud to call his father. Charles was so proud of Chris and the man he has become. He has been such a fighter but his body just couldn't fight anymore. We miss him already and life will not be same without him in it, but I know my heart is with him always. My life is better because he was a part of it. Love you forever, Charles. He was a signature member - I knew him from classes with him (Jackie Kaucher) at the Arts Center in my very "early days" . With sorrow, John Blackwood A LETTER TO JEANNIE Dear Jeannie, May 26, 2016 “I’m late. I’m late. I’m late for a very important date.” Oh, wait we are not talking about a big White Rabbit with floppy ears. We are talking about the past President of MSW, Jeannie Fry. By all accounts, Jeannie was never late for a board meeting and was often seen eating her dinner at the board room table. Jeannie has served in many positions over the years. She served on the annual Exhibition Committee in 2010 and served as Chair in 2012 for the Nominating Committee for new officers. 2012-2013 Jeannie served as Vice-President of MSW under Ruth Byrn. 2012 was a very busy year for her, as she served in various positions. She was in charge of “programs”, while also serving on the Facebook team as Administrator from 2012-2016. Most recently Jeannie served as President of MSW from 2014-2016. She even found time to provide refreshments for some of the mini workshops. While serving as President, Jeannie was also on the Annual Exhibition committee in 2016. I’m certain I have missed several other positions that Jeannie has served. George has said “Jeannie has been such a good MSW President and friend that I have trouble listing all the Thank Yous from me. I can think of two things that standout - Jeannie’s absolute attention to the details in everything from numbers to minutes. Secondly, Jeannie always says thanks to all the people who have helped make MSW the success it has become”. George is grateful to Jeannie for the advice and council she has provided for the past year . Another board member, Marlene, expresses similar feelings “Jeannie has been an excellent President and she is so very organized. She thinks of the entire group and makes everyone feel welcome , whether they be old timers, new members or visitors.” Finally, from Selma, we have these sentiments “In the 40+ years of my membership in MSW, I’ve never experienced a more competent or visionary leader than Jeannie. Her attention both to detail and the goals and welfare of MSW have been profound. She is a warm, genuine human being who encourages all to pursue their artistic dreams and has jumped by leaps and bounds in her own artistic expressions. Hers is a job well done!” It goes without saying Jeannie, you have won the hearts and respect of the MSW family. However, for now, you have earned a well deserved RRRR&R. The RRRR&R stands for Rest, Recovery, Recuperation, Relaxation, and Rejuvenation. Thank you Jeannie, for your invaluable service to MSW. Maybe just maybe, instead of the Big White Rabbit with floppy ears dashing here and there, you just might be the Energizer Bunny! Respectfully submitted, Sue Burford, Incoming Secretary Thank you! I wanted to thank all of you for your support these past two years as your President. I particularly want to openly thank those on the Board that served with me and those that helped with various committee work. I appreciate all of the time that you gave and your dedication to MSW. Our organization only exists and succeeds only because of its volunteers. Your work keeps MSW going and growing to be around for painters and supporters of the arts in the years to come. Many, Many, Many thanks to all of you! Jeannie Fry Thank you, one and all! To committee and board members, especially those who helped out 2014-2016, including—Annual Exhibition Reception (Peggy Wenger, Susan Santa Cruz, Mary Nancy Henry), Hospitality (Catherine Caldwell, Marianne Hampton, David Cook, Freda Angeletti), Annual Exhibition (Karlyn Holloway, Suzann Waggoner, Anne Lyon, Selma & Jerry Blackburn, Gary Alexander, George Wittenberg, Bob Snider, Reita Miller), Board members (Shirley Brainard, Peyton Bishop, Ruth Byrn, Ruth Fein, Mary Anne Garnett, Caren Garner, Marlene Gremillion, Marianne Hampton, Paula Kalina, Cheryl Kellar, Bryan Kellar, Sandy Marson, Charlotte Rierson, Barbara Rhodes, Suzann Waggoner, Peggy Wenger, George Wittenberg, Diane Ziemski) and the Regional Contact Liaisons (Sheila Parsons, Sandy Barksdale, Sarah Merkle, Janis Gill Ward, Kay Aclin, Bill Branch, Richard Stephens, Judy Coffey, Sally Papich, Mary Ann Stafford, Sue Coon, Inis Ray, Lisa Eldridge, Gloria Garrison, John Keller, Linda Larey) ***************************** David Paul Cook David paints in watercolor, and also enjoys producing art using other mediums including oils, oil pastels and graphite pencil. He is an avid outdoor painter. Most of David's watercolors are of Central Arkansas landscapes, painted on the spot. Scenes along the Arkansas River, at Pinnacle Mountain State Park, and the Arkansas Delta, are among his favorite locations to find inspiration. David studied art at Studio San Damiano in Milwaukee, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and with a private teacher in Kansas City, Mo. He continues his growth as an artist by taking workshops from national and regional teachers such as Don Nice, Pat Deadman, Ken Hosmer, Mel Stabin, Margaret Martin, Fred Rawlinson, Sheila B. Parsons, Richard Stevens, Selma Blackburn and Lian Quan Zhen. David teaches watercolor landscape painting at Arkansas Arts Center’s Museum School in Little Rock where he has been a faculty member for more than 12 years. He also taught beginning and intermediate students at White Wagon Farm for 10 years. He is Past-President of the Arkansas League of Artists, and achieved ALA Signature member status in 2011. David is a committee member and former Board Member of the Mid- Southern Watercolorists. He is a PastPresident and member of the Conway League of Artists. He is founder of the Plein Air Painters of Arkansas, a group he led for 13 years. Artist's Statement I have been passionate about landscape painting all my life, from the very beginning and continuing today, pursuing the discipline of working on location to capture the mood and excitement of the place. I am influenced by the light and other natural elements, as well as the sounds, movements and even smells of each places that I paint, opening all my senses to produce my expression of the scene. I paint frequently, and in all kinds of weather conditions. I believe in life long learning. I enjoy teaching art, as well as producing it. I strive to be a good teacher first, as well as a good artist, encouraging others to joyfully and fearlessly express themselves through their creative efforts. David Paul Cook, 4 Ophelia Court, Maumelle, AR 72113 (501) 851-6577; e-mail: davidpaulcookart@sbcglobal.net MSW BOARD MEETING MINUTES: MAY 18, 2016 Treasurer’s report sent by Cheryl Hall. It shows a total balance of $39392.76, including $3002.68 in the Wiggins Memorial Fund. Treasurer’s report was accepted. Jeannie thanked the board for all of its efforts to support MSW and, in turn, George Wittenberg presented a gift to Jeannie to thank her for her outstanding service as president. She received a standing ovation. Jeannie also thanked Sandy Marson for her leadership as head of Special Exhibitions for several years. Sarah Johnson, Special Exhibitions Chair, distributed prospectuses and entry forms for the 24th Special Open Exhibition. It was suggested that works on canvas don’t need to be framed if they are gallery wrapped, or if they are on board. The gallery hangs the work and provides refreshments, and MSW does our own advertising. Annual Exhibition 2017 Chair Lynn Whaley reported that the prospectus is ready to go out in June, and again in August in the newsletter and on our website. Juror is Mike Holter. The venue will again be the Arkansas Arts Center. In addition she projected plans for the next 2 Annual Exhibitions. In 2018, Iain Stewart will jury the show. We plan to use the same system used last year. He will teach a workshop in February 2018 also. The 2018 show is to be held at the Butler Center March 9 to June 30, 2018. A motion was made to ask Michael Bailey to jury in 2019 for the Annual Exhibition held at the Historic AR Museum. The motion was seconded and passed. Mini Workshops: Caren Garner has several upcoming mini-workshops scheduled . She moved that we contact Judy Coffey from Houston, TX to lead an August two-day mini-workshop, with travel expenses paid by MSW. The motion was seconded and carried. Michael Holter – MSW Juror Michael is a Texas artist that has rapidly become known for his dynamic watercolor portraits, figures and landscapes. After a successful career in advertising design and creative leadership, Michael began focusing on his watercolor in 2011. He is now a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, The Southwestern Watercolor Society, and The Society of Watercolor Artists. His work has received numerous awards, been published in Splash 16 and 17 and been recognized by selection to the Fabriano (Italy) Watermedia Exhibition. Although Michael has been painting most of his life, his work experience spans a wide range of creativity, from high school art teacher, advertising creative director and businessman. Michael has owned and operated two galleries. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and an MA in Visual Communication. His wide range of experience influences his approach to his exciting and popular workshops. Michael says, "My work is impressionistic. I like to represent people or places and allow the painting to evolve from the recognizable. The challenge is to balance the care needed to make the representation interesting… and perhaps believable, with the freedom, looseness and painterly quality that makes watercolor so unique and expressive.
