New Album “Out In The Open”

Without fanfare, Will Goble is steadily
carving out a unique space for himself
as a bassist and bandleader. Driven
by a genuine love for group
interaction and a positive exchange
with audiences, he leads his own
bands and supports other musicians
with equal energy and enthusiasm.
Will has performed as a sideman with
Grammy award-winning pianist
Marcus Roberts and with numerous
other notable artists, including Vincent
Gardner, Jason Marsalis, Marcus
P r i n t u p , We s s “ Wa r m d a d dy ”
Anderson, Kevin Bales, Scotty
Barnhart, Martin Bejerano, Philip
Harper, Fred Wesley, and Stephen
Riley among others. He currently tours
frequently with his own trio/quartet as
well as the Jason Marsalis Vibes
Quartet. Will appears on Marsalis’
most recent album, “Music Update,”
which was released nationally in music performed with infectious
August, 2009, and received 4.5 stars rhythm and communication.

In June of 2008, Will received his
masters degree from Florida State
University, where he worked as a
graduate teaching assistant in the jazz
studies program assisting Marcus
Roberts in developing educational
curricula for new college students
interested in studying jazz. Shortly
thereafter, Will relocated to Atlanta
where he maintains a busy performing
schedule. His first album as a leader
“Out In The Open,” features his own
trio joined by Marcus Printup
(trumpet) and Chad Eby (saxophone)
for several originals from Will, David,
and Austin, as well as compositions by
Thelonious Monk, and bassist Robert
Hurst, among others. “Out In The
Open” offers a diverse selection of
Recent and Upcoming
Collaborations:
•Will is scheduled for concerts in
Venezuela, Philadelphia, Boston,
Tennessee, and New Orleans
during 2011 and 2012 with the
Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet.
•Will is slated to record with an
ensemble of Atlanta’s top young
musicians for a release on Hot
Shoe Records.
•Will joined Marcus Roberts at
Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco
in April of 2009.
Biography
Born in Durham, North Carolina in 1983, Will Goble
followed an unusual path prior to becoming an upright
bassist and jazz musician. At the age of eleven, Will
received his first electric bass as a gift, and he soon found
himself performing in local clubs, bars, and other venues
with rock and roll bands made up of his peers. This
continued until his junior year of high school, when the
arrival of jazz educator Andrew Sioberg to Durham School
of the Arts piqued Will’s interest. Under Sioberg’s direction,
Will took up the acoustic bass, and began his lifelong study
of jazz.
Following high school graduation, Will received a music
scholarship to Florida State University, where he studied
with bassist Rodney Jordan, as well as the renowned pianist
Marcus Roberts. This relationship with Roberts proved
especially important during Will’s formative years, as
Marcus included him in a number of performances and
educational workshops. In April of 2006, Marcus featured
Will as a member of his quartet for a performance at
Hampton University.
Upon graduation, Goble accepted an offer to return to
Florida State as a special graduate assistant to Roberts in
2006. This latest stint in Florida enabled Will to work
frequently with his newly formed trio, which includes
drummer David Potter and pianist Austin Johnson. On
many Saturday nights, Will’s trio performed at Paradigm, an
under the radar jazz venue that has seen artists such as
Wessel Anderson, Marcus Roberts, Wycliffe Gordon, and
Roland Guerin, among others, join the group as special
guests. In addition to working as a trio, Will, David, and
Austin often perform as a rhythm section for musicians
such as Anderson, Jason Marsalis, Marcus Printup, David

Guidi, John Ricci, Vincent Gardner, Barry Greene, and
others across the United States and Canada. The trio is
currently on tour as the rhythm section with Marsalis’
Vibraphone Quartet. In the last three years of extensive
traveling with Marsalis, Will has logged performances at
the St. Bart’s Music Festival, Harris Theater and the Jazz
Showcase in Chicago, Sculler’s Jazz Club, Boston,
Anthology, San Diego, and The Iridium, New York City.
Now located in Atlanta, Will free-lances alongside some of
the city’s best musicians; in addition to leading groups
around the southeast and beyond. Will was the High
Museum’s featured artist for October 2010, and his trio and
quartet are commonly showcased at Churchill Grounds,
Atlanta’s oldest jazz club.
Aside from his work as a bandleader or sideman, Will is
active in educational settings. He has taught at FSU’s
summer jazz camp for a number of years, and is an artist in
residence for 2011. In spring of 2010, he was the artist in
residence, along with his quintet, at Clayton State
University for the Spivey Jam, just outside of Atlanta.
