This is my second year with CSS; I started the 20122013- year as VP Events and ended it as the elected vice president of the society as a whole. As I continue with my schooling I have considered my role within this society to be an integral part of my time at the university, as it has helped me to develop a greater understanding for the business world. There is so much to learn that you cannot simply take from the classroom, and so we as the Commerce Student Society aim to provide opportunities for other commerce students to learn in a way that is more hands on (be it from case competitions, formal banquets, mentorship opportunities, etc.) as we facilitate the change from student to business professional. This year, our primary focus is to raise the engagement of business students. We aim to do this by getting more involved right from the classroom, with a mentorship program in the works for this fall. We also hope to provide a wider variety of opportunities that would tailor to specific groups (based either on intended major or which year of study). In essence, we hope to help develop commerce students who are in their earlier stages of their degree, and provide a connection to the business community for students that are soon to graduate. The events outlined in this package will give a better explanation as to how we intend to put this to action. For those of you who are considering partnering with our society for the first time, I am confident that you will find our initiative to be mutually beneficial to the students as well as to your business. To our continuing partners, I would like to thank you for your continued support and look forward to strengthening our relationships over the next year. I will be very excited to hear about the relationships that your company will build through our program over the next year. Your continued involvement in our society has helped us to grow and learn and we are very motivated to return that favor back into our work with all of you. On behalf of the Commerce Student Society and the students in the UNBC School of Business I would like to thank you for your support. We look forward to sharing our vision with all of our partners over the 2013 - 2014 academic year. Sincerely, Chris Moreau President Commerce Student Society UNBC School of Business 1 UNBC Commerce Student Society About CSS The UNBC Commerce Student Society exists to provide the commerce students of UNBC with ways to learn about the world of business from a new perspective. Our slogan “learning beyond the classroom” is achieved through a number of academic, philanthropic and networking events that are spread out over the academic year. The CSS is lead by an executive team of business students hired by an elected president. The CSS hopes to foster a rich environment of learning and cooperation while working in partnership with students, faculty, businesses, and community groups with the goal of providing its members with as many opportunities as possible. Sponsoring CSS It is our belief within CSS that there is much more to a 4-year degree than simply attending classes and studying for finals. With your support, we will continue to grow as we offer as many opportunities as possible to prepare and connect the future leaders of tomorrow into our local business community. Some of the benefits that are included in partnering with the CSS are (but are not limited to): • Developing a long lasting relationship into the UNBC school of Business. • Having multiple opportunities to work with and meet some of UNBC’s most talented commerce students. • Using our society to help set up career workshops at the UNBC • Getting the opportunity to speak in front of our more active commerce Students at events such as our annual Business Banquet. • Partnering with the CSS’s philanthropic initiatives. 2 UNBC Commerce Student Society Sponsorship Premier Platinum Gold Silver $10,000 + $2500 - $9999 $1000 - $2499 $500 - $999 - Logo displayed at all events - 2 tickets to all events - Title rights to 2 CSS events - Opportunity to speak at most events - Mention and thank you at all events - All advertising will display logo - Company profile on css website - Acknowledgement on the UNBC Commerce Student Society website with a website hyperlink - Right to distribute promotional material in appropriate locations and/or set up any display unites - Access to CSS executive resumes - Industry Exclusivity - Right of first refusal for 2014-2015 year - Access to student resumes from all events - Link to and mentions on social media platforms - Logo placement at sponsored events - 2 tickets to sponsored events - Acknowledgement on the UNBC CSS website with website hyperlink - Company profile on CSS website - Access to CSS executive resumes - Access to student resumes for sponsored events - Mention and thank you at sponsored events - Right of first refusal for 2014-2015 year - Link to and mentions on social media platforms - Logo placement on sponsored events - 2 tickets to sponsored events - Access to CSS executive resumes - Access to student resumes for sponsored events - Opportunity to speak at sponsored events - Mention and thank you at sponsored events - Logo placement on sponsored events - 2 tickets to sponsored events - Access to CSS executive resumes - Access to student resumes for sponsored events - Opportunity to speak at sponsored events - Mention and thank you at sponsored events 3 UNBC Commerce Student Society CABS As a society and as a University we are extremely fortunate to be a part of the Canadian Association of Business Students (CABS). We have recently begun to take full advantage of the resources and relationships that are made available to us through CABS and their continued support with our society will help us to continue to develop in a thriving business community. Summary The Canadian Association of Business Students (CABS) is a not for profit organization that represents 100,000 business students from 31 universities in Canada. Their purpose is simple: to make every business graduate in Canada “global ready”. This means that our students will be recognized internationally for superior talent and leadership. Their Mission Advance the interests of Canadian undergraduate business students through their governing commerce societies, as a national network that regroups student, professional, academic and government bodies to foster proficient development of the business professionals and agents of tomorrow. What They Do In their efforts to transcend Canadian business to a brand new horizon, they offer: • Conferences and Competitions: They are the guardian of conferences and competitions for student leadership strategy discussion, professional development for leadership and practical skills learning. It is their responsibility to ensure the maximum quality and integrity of these events, as well as support organizing committees in the planning, logistics and securing of sponsorship. • Canadian Leadership Network (CLN): They maintain a network that regroups and connects student, professional, academic and government entities nationally to bring the best resources to their student leaders. • Campus Engagement Programs: As an initiative of the CLN, they strive to improve the quality of undergraduate business education by engaging students at their campus, by bringing recruiting employers to students, through their Campus Ambassador programs and by responding to needs of business students from all fields of study. • Partnering with Causes: They maintain a working relationship with major causes supported by Canadian business students, namely including “5 Days for the Homeless.” 4 • 5 Days for the Homeless We are very proud to be one of 25 commerce societies that organize the 5 Days for the Homeless initiative at our university. Last year was our most successful year yet, seeing us raise over 3,000 dollars for the local charity “Community Partners Addressing Homelessness”. We have seen much support from our community with this event, and hope to continue to grow this campaign in the north for years to come. About In 2005, The University of Alberta School of Business students founded 5 Days for The Homeless as a local initiative. This initiative, after running very successfully for a number of years on the Edmonton campus at the University of Alberta, was taken national in 2008. To date, the campaign has raised over $985,000 for charitable organizations across the country and has spread its message from coast to coast. Mission 5 Days for the Homeless aims to increase awareness of homelessness and raise donations for local charitable organizations supporting homeless and at-risk youth across the country. Vision 5 Days for the Homeless strives to create a society where all homeless individuals are given the opportunity to rebuild their lives. Values We believe that every person should have equal opportunities to achieve success. We further recognize our responsibility to provide opportunities for those at-risk individuals so that they can achievetheir own definition of success without sacrificing their dignity and integrity. 5 UNBC Commerce Student Society Shinerama It’s Orientation Week in the 1960s. You’re a student leader and looking for a way to have fun and help others. So you take a pair of someone’s scruffy shoes, clean them up and ask for a donation. Dozens of shoe shines later, you and your friends have raised $1,300. It’s that simple – and it’s been working for 47 years. An event called Shinerama – now Canada’s largest post-secondary school fundraiser has raised more than $21.5 million for cystic fibrosis research. The UNBC has taken part in Shinerama since 1997, and in the last few years the local campaign has averaged to raise about $20,000 per year. This year we aim to improve on that number by increasing the engagement in the community through sponsorship and support. The CSS has taken part in this charity initiative for many years now, but for the first time we have entered into a partnership with our student union, the Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS), taking on the task of seeking sponsorship for this event. Shinerama started out as a community wide shoeshine blitz, and has since developed into a variety of projects all raising funds for cystic fibrosis research through CF Canada. This is by far the largest charity event of the year at UNBC, and with support from over 50 clubs and approximately 150 volunteers, as well as from the support we hope to gain from our community, we intend to make this the most successful year to date. 6 UNBC Commerce Student Society 16th Annual Business Banquet This year will mark the 16th year that the CSS has had its annual Business Banquet, held near the end of the academic year. Last year we attempted a new format for the banquet, having businesses purchase a table as opposed to one seat, and allowing students to choose with whom they sat. This was extremely successful for us and I am proud to say that it was our most successful event of the year. This is a formal dinner (with presentations) that truly benefits everyone involved, from the students, to our partners. The intent is to fill the room with an array of different businesses to allow the students to approach and network with companies that they are interested in speaking to. This is also a great opportunity for businesses to speak in front of a room full of eager and engaged students as they are all there because they want to go over and above what is required to get a degree. This also gives us an opportunity to present our 5 Days for the Homeless charity campaign to the business and student communities. Surrounded by the business leaders of tomorrow, this evening provides the ingredients for generating new ideas, meeting future employees or employers, and enforces the already strong bond between the university and the community. It is a light-hearted yet professional event that has an excellent track record and has greatly increased corporate relations in and around Northern B.C. Commerce Cup The Commerce Cup is an annual sporting event put on by the CSS in early September to promote engagement to the students of UNBC. Every year a new sport is chosen, and teams are made to compete for the title of Commerce Cup Champion. This event is not specific to business students, but instead is used as a tool to promote friendly competition as well as participation in the extra curricular to newer students of all majors. 7 UNBC Commerce Student Society Autumn Affair For the past 3 years the CSS has thrown a banquet dinner in the first semester that taught dinner etiquette as well as how to dress for an interview and other tips to success. This dinner was also used as a networking opportunity for students, and taught them how to act in a professional setting with less pressure than being thrown into such a high pressured environment. We have seen success with this event, but have decided that we could improve upon Style in the City by putting a greater focus on first year engagement and bringing in more members of the business community to speak to their roles and what their degree did for them. It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you our new and improved, first annual Autumn Affair. We as individuals know first hand that being a first and even second year student in university can be, in a word, overwhelming. This is why we want to put more focus this year in facilitating that step forward in each student’s education by easing young or inexperienced commerce students into a banquet environment that promotes development as opposed to perfection. We feel as though approaching our first formal event in this fashion will help open the doors for students going forward in the year and in their careers. As we all know, very few first and second year students know exactly what they want to do when they are finished their degree. Many students are not even sure what is available to them with a degree. This is why this year we would like to add a new element to the banquet that would see a combination of business professionals, alumni, and community leaders take to the podium to discuss what the world has to offer them when they have finally finished a lifetime of formal education. We hope that this will both help students to set or narrow their career goals as well as give an opportunity for networking between the students and the community. 8 UNBC Commerce Student Society Case Competitions For the fourth year in a row, the CSS will be hosting two case competitions with the intention to set the focus first on 2-4 year students and then to change that focus to helping first years learn how to compete in a case competition as well. These two events will take place throughout the year, with one in the first semester and another in the second. These competitions are crucial for the development of young business students, and helps to prepare existing or future competitors for the JDC West competition in January. These competitions are also extremely beneficial in preparing students for a successful career in business. In these case competitions, students (grouped in a team of three) are given a case from an array of different topics from marketing to finance and anything in between, and are then given 3 hours to come up with their solution. They are then brought to our panel of judges, consisting of local business professionals, faculty, and/or alumni of UNBC and are then graded on their presentation. Due to the variety of cases available, this is an opportunity for us to be extremely flexible with our corporate partners in creating customized and unique sponsorship opportunities. We have found these competitions to be a great way to engage commerce students who are looking to push themselves to obtain more knowledge and experience than what is offered in the classroom. Our intention for this year is to put more focus on first and second year students exclusively in our second event, and will give our competitors more assistance in preparing for what will likely be their first competition of the sort. Both of our competitions will be open to the college as well, and of course we welcome everyone who is interested in the community or from the university to come and watch as well. 9 UNBC Commerce Student Society Mentorship Program This year, CSS is excited to be bringing an old idea back into the school of business, re-introducing the CSS Mentorship Program to all first and second year business students. This program is designed to help students in their first or second year in the business program at UNBC to become more accustomed to the school, their classes, and of course the extra curricular activities that are extremely beneficial in a business degree (such as the JDC west team and our case competitions, banquets, etc.). With the support of the faculty and from our more experienced students we hope to pair each student with a mentor that will help guide them through the year both in and outside of the classroom. We would also like to extend this program into the business community, giving students the opportunity to learn about the work force and what they can do with their degree. This could mean organizing a luncheon, or having business members coming to speak with groups of students that would be interested to hear about their career. This program is very new to us, and we are extremely excited to present this to the students of UNBC. If you or your business would be interested in helping us to develop this program by volunteering your company to speak to students in some degree, please let us know. 10 UNBC Commerce Student Society Contacts Chris Moreau Imogene McDonald President VP Events chris@unbccss.ca imogene@unbccss.ca 250-614-8264 250-301-3010 Dale Watt Eric Anderson VP External VP Marketing dale@unbccss.ca eric@unbccss.ca 250-961-3253 778-349-0803 Sydney Sankey George Meyer VP Internal VP Finance sydney@unbccss.ca george@unbccss.ca 250-255-2223 250-991-1516 11 UNBC Commerce Student Society Thank You The CSS would like to thank all of its previous sponsors from last year, without whom none of what we have done or plan to do would be possible. We appreciate all kinds of help and support we have received from various businesses within and beyond the community, and would like to thank you here for your kindness and generosity. We welcome and invite new and returning sponsors and look forward to all that we can do in the coming years. From all of us at the Commerce Student Society, we thank you! 12
