Players from as far as Virginia and even Alabama were in Houston, May 23-24, to showcase their talents. There were 48 teams for doubles and 66 entries for singles. Lane conditions for both events proved to be challenging as 1st round cuts were minus for each event (-61 doubles, -42 singles). As expected, the bowlers were more comfortable the 2nd round as the scoring pace increased. The cut for Blaze Doubles jumped to +27 (2 games) and +8 (2 games) for singles. In the final round, the cream rose to the top and amateurs were crowned as champions in both events. Danny Inocencio (258) and Lee Lorts (279) of Houston lead the final round with a game of 537 to take home the title and the 1st place prize of $3,000. I first met Natalie Cortese when she was a student bowler in high school over ten years ago. She had plenty of drive, didn’t have a fear of working, and a willingness to ask questions. Even threw a 300 game while at Hoffman Estates High School in suburban Chicago. On occasion she and her twin sister Amanda would practice after her mom Angie bowled the Beverly Sport League at Beverly Lanes, owned by USBC Hall of Famer Les Zikes and his family. One could see immediately these two could bowl and wondered when there would again be a women’s tour for these two to showcase their talents. There was a 300 game and a then state record 802 series. Finishing fifth as a junior in the Pepsi Nationals, and a IHSA State High School Championship her sophomore year. Natalie got the attention of numerous colleges while winning the Denny’s High School All-American Challenge in April 2008 as a high school senior. After bowling for Central Missouri as freshman and helping them to a NCAA runner up finish, the twins transferring to Valparaiso for its first three intercollegiate seasons. Natalie then went to work for KR Strikeforce, and now for Leading Edge Promotions and On the Ball Bowling. So if you order a custom Viz-A-Ball, you may come in contact with her. Then there was the 2015 Queens in Green Bay. She made the cut as the last qualifying score, good for 64th place and a match with top-seeded Verity Crawley. Venturing into rare air, she won. There were two more winner bracket wins against Bryanna Caldwell and Jodi Woessner. Then came a loss to Kristin Quah, moving her to the contender’s bracket. A win against 2013 Queens champ Diana Zavjalova brought her to the brink of another television appearance, her first since the Denny’s Challenge in 2008. The opponent was 2006 Queens winner Shannon Pluhowsky. The result this time was not as fortunate, dropping a 667-578 decision, settling for an eight place finish. JPA: I’ll bet your folks were extremely proud and then some, huh? Natalie Cortese: Yes, they were proud! Honestly, every day of qualifying I started minus and I told myself never to give up. Each day I grinded to get back to plus and somehow got to lucky +73 for a three-way tie for 62nd. Making match play was an amazing sense of accomplishment personally, at that point I felt I had nothing to lose. Someone had to be the 64th seed and it turned into being a blessing in disguise. I never imagined making it that far. I think the support I received from my family, close friends, and new friends I met there ultimately drove my success. I am so thankful to have been paired with Clara (Guerrero) during qualifying, she was phenomenal. It’s you against 200 other bowlers, but I felt like I was bowling with her and not against her because she was so supportive after every shot. My bowling career has been very team based and having that unexpected sense of support gave me encouragement. JPA: That was amazing. Were you surprised to see so many gals you bowled against in college? NC: I wasn’t surprised to see them since there’s so much talent, but it was nice seeing so many again! Kimi Davidson was awesome, she bowled great all week. It was good seeing her again. I felt like I knew a lot more girls since so many were in college at some point during years I was. JPA: How have your bosses been supportive of you to bowl the tour this summer? NC: I’m very lucky that my company and bosses are supportive. I’m able to work and bowl, so I put a few hours of work in and took part vacation. They were so proud, they were telling me how they were all watching the PBA XtraFrame in the conference room cheering at the TV. I’m definitely lucky that they are so supportive! ################## And seemingly with the blink of an eye, this year’s trip into Unadulterated Adrenaline is over. Wasn’t the exciting excursion it has been in the past, although two games in the Bowlers Journal Senior singles were pretty good. Transition on the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern left me a couple of multiple pin spares I couldn’t get the right angle into left me a couple of holes and fifty pins short of the lead. We knew for months the team event at the USBC Open Championships was going to be a challenge. A couple of us had wondered why many had broken down the 5-6-7 board at the arrows and not the 2-3-4 area. It didn’t take us long to figure out why. The best way I could describe our ball reaction was it was like bowling on the edge of a cliff. Miss left, it runs past the head pin. Miss right, especially at a left to right angle, then walk back to the ball return, pick up your ball, and prepare for a full-rack spare attempt. The pattern seemed a little slicker than we had deducted, so about half the first game was spent figuring out which way to roll the ball and where to put it. Even with unique transition going on, I felt fortunate to escape with a 607 series helping the team to a 2852 total. About all I’ll say right now about doubles and singles is the day ended with an appearance in the latest chapter of Matt and Aaron’s Excellent Adventure, a USBC live stream bowl.tv, featuring the latest 900 series shooter Earon Vollmar. Next week, more on my 2015 USBC trip to El Paso and an update about a familiar name from the not-to-distant past, now making a name for herself in a related line of work. TROUP lanes in the Grand Event Center, was using an older technology urethane ball to attack the 32-foot Wolf lane condition, the shortest of the PBA’s “animal pattern” lane conditions. “Anytime I can play the gutter and use urethane that’s a game I like to play,” Troup said. “I could see the other guys were having some trouble dealing with the transition and eventually it was going to get ugly, so I had confidence that using urethane and playing outside would be a good combination to have to deal with that. Today straighter is greater was the rule of the day.” After Troup qualified for the finals earlier in the week at the nearby FireLake Bowling Center, Guppy, Kyle’s mother Sherri and brother Tyler were able to fly in from North Carolina to watch the finals telecast. The win made the Troup’s the fourth father and son to record a PBA Tour win. Eugene and Don McCune, Pete and Dick Weber, and Jimmy and Don Johnson were the previous father-son combinations to win titles. That’s the toughest match I’ve ever been a part of and I wasn’t even bowling in it,” Guppy Troup said. “I was hanging on every shot, so I’m Continued from Page 1 Kent, 229-179, in a championship match that featured two of PBA’s rising stars. In winning, Troup and his dad became the fourth father-son tandem in PBA history to win Tour titles. “This is an unbelievable feeling,” said the 23 year-old Troup. “It’s going to take a while for me to realize it. “It’s a dream come true and it makes it all that much better that my family was able to be here to be a part of it.” Troup, who qualified third for the stepladder finals conducted on specially-installed Continued on Page 5 THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, June 4, 2015 | Page 3 Chuck Pezzano Named Recipient Of IBMA Hennessy Award Of Merit Men Kelly Ray, Cowtown Bowling Palace............................... 824 Scott Spolar, Plano Super Bowl ...................................... 824 Richie Rylant, Terrell Bowl............................................... 820 Marshall Morrison, Western Bowl ................................... 817 Jeff Curl, AMF Lewisville Lanes ...................................... 813 Jay Ashbaugh, Mel’s Lone Star Lanes ........................... 808 Philip Moseley, Diamond Lanes ...................................... 801 Jason Tidwell, Diamond Lanes ....................................... 801 Bo Bolon, Tenpins & More ............................................... 800 Mike Donahue, Forum Bowl ............................................ 786 Edward Chavarri, Fiesta Lanes ....................................... 781 Ben Hogan, Hallmark Lanes ............................................ 770 Brian Williams, Killeen Bowlerama ................................. 767 James Rawls, Big Spring Bowl-A-Rama ......................... 757 James Stewart, AMF DeSoto Lanes................................ 751 Joseph Canales, AMF Spare Time Lanes....................... 731 Rick Lawrence, Ennis All Star Bowl ................................ 721 Cliffton Conaster, Heritage Lanes ................................... 707 Brian Dickerson, Red Bird Lanes.................................... 674 Ron Waller, Brunswick Westcreek Lanes ....................... 620 Women Kristen Bramblett, Tenpins & More ................................. 765 Karin Ciesiolka, Hallmark Lanes ..................................... 758 Sandi Charles, Killeen Bowlerama.................................. 738 Jennifer Hayes, Plano Super Bowl ................................. 719 Tennelle Milligan, Cowtown Bowling Palace .................. 715 Toni Price, Diamond Lanes .............................................. 710 Milinda Lambright, Western Bowl ................................... 703 Aimee LaFrance, Mel’s Lone Star Lanes ........................ 684 Tara Light, Fiesta Lanes ................................................... 679 Genie Franklin, Forum Bowl ............................................ 679 Deanna Hoffman, Red Bird Lanes................................... 665 Patty Ellington, Terrell Bowl ............................................ 661 Jolynn Baird, AMF DeSoto Lanes ................................... 644 Heather Robb, AMF Lewisville Lanes ............................. 637 Ryne McKenrick, Ennis All Star Bowl ............................. 604 Jeri Taylor, Heritage Lanes .............................................. 561 Dorina Hart, Brunswick Westcreek Lanes ...................... 508 Scan with smart phone to visit the SASBA website. www.sasba.com The International Bowling Media Association announced Chuck Pezzano, recognized as the dean of bowling writers, will receive the 2015 Hennessy Award of Merit. To say Chuck Pezzano was bowling’s most famous and prolific journalist is the understatement of the century. No one ever has or ever will surpass the sheer volume of positive publicity he generated for the sport in an incredible career spanning more than 60 years. Pezzano’s legacy to bowling started at the tender age of 19 while a student at Rutgers University. After a two year stint in the U.S. Army, Pezzano majored in English at Rutgers and earned his Bachelor’s Degree. As a writer and public speaker, he was a natural. In his junior year, the editor of the Patterson (NJ) Morning Call noticed his talent and hired him to write three bowling columns per week. His column was called Down My Alley and it was so popular he was soon named the paper’s lead sports writer, turning out five sports columns per week in addition to his weekly three bowling columns. All the while he had become one of the top flight bowlers in his region by distinguishing himself as the first collegiate bowler to roll an 800 series, namely 824 in 1951. In 1958 he helped organize and became one of the charter members of the Professional Bowlers Association. Chuck was the king of print journalism but he was also one of the pioneers in sports television and the electronic media working behind the scenes and handling production duties for the PBA for many years. He worked as a consultant on television, movie and instructional videos with Hall of Fame Broadcasters Mel Allen, Chris Schenkel, Nelson Burton, Jr., Jack Buck and Bret Musberger. In addition he was also heavily involved in PBA business affairs, running the PBA East Region for over 20 years. He was Secretary of the PBA Hall of Fame for two decades and served as the organization’s official Historian, a position he held for life. His proudest achievements on the lanes, however, revolved around family. Chuck and his four sons, Chuck, Jr., Curt, Clay and Craig had the distinction of being the first father and four sons to each officially record sanctioned 300 games. Pezzano also made his mark as the author of more than a dozen books on bowling, and easily 10,000 columns, magazine articles and press releases to numerous organizations. Chuck always welcomed new writers and was especially proud when women became leaders in the bowling community and industry. He was instrumental in helping to open the door for women bowling writers to join the previously all-male Bowling Writers Association of America. He was also a lifelong advocate for high school and collegiate bowling. He was the first Meritori- Chuck Pezzano ous Service inductee into the inaugural PBA Hall of Fame class of 1975 and later inducted into the United States Bowling Congress and Bowling Writers Association Halls of Fame, among his membership in 12 Halls of Fame. The move to live twohour coverage at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 17, will result in a shift of PBA World Series of Bowling VII from its previously-announced October time frame at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. “This is an unprecedented opportunity for the PBA and bowling,” Clark said. “December 17 will be one of the most spectacular events in the history of the sport.” Since 2000, the PBA’s ESPN telecasts have aired almost exclusively on Sunday afternoons. The remainder of PBA’s 2015-16 schedule will return to the Sunday time slot. In order to maximize the impact of the prime time event, WSOB VII will move to Reno’s National Bowling Stadium and the PBA will work with South Point Director of Bowling Mike Monyak to create new events for PBA members in the vacated October time slot. The PBA World Championship is the PBA’s ultimate test of player versatility, requiring players to perform at a high level on five different lane conditions. WSOB VII, scheduled for Dec. 7-19 at the National Bowling Stadium, will include the PBA Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon and Scorpion Championships. Qualifying rounds in those four “animal pattern” events determine the finalists who advance to World Championship match play where they bowl on a special World Championship lane conditioning pattern. Combined scores from qualifying and match play will determine the top five players who will advance to the PBA World Championship stepladder finals. WSOB VII is moving to Reno because rooms are not available due to the National Finals Rodeo which will take place in Las Vegas in December. ARLINGTON, Texas – The Scholarship Management and Accounting Reports for Tenpins (SMART) Corporation Board of Directors made an income earnings distribution of $400,000 to providers’ funds on May 29. The distribution is for 2014 earnings. The distribution follows a $192,969 distribution made in December, for 2013 earnings. “We’re pleased to be able to make such a significant distribution and our largest since March 2013,” said SMART Corporation Board Chairman Wally Hall. “The SMART Fund has provided good returns as we maintain the conservative investment strategy expected by our stakeholders.” When the SMART Board announced its distribution in December, it also announced decisions with respect to future distributions would be determined each May. The SMART Board has a highly conservative investment strategy with the largest portion of earned scholarships placed in safe securities. The remaining assets are invested in a diversified portfolio expected to yield greater returns. While some income is required to cover administrative costs and investment fees, the remaining income is distributed to participating organizations. The United States Bowling Congress SMART program began in 1994, offering a centralized location to manage bowling scholarship funds as well as providing USBC members with a resource for inquiries about bowling scholarships. In 2010, the SMART Bowling Scholarship Funding Corporation was created as an independent entity dedicated to the management, protection and promotion of the SMART scholarship funds. USBC staff oversees the day-to-day operation of the program. Visit BOWL.com/SMART for more information about the SMART program. Lane Laughter New Sport Bowling Program Includes Tournament Average Integrity as the Centerpiece ARLINGTON, Texas – To encourage more bowlers and leagues to take advantage of competing on challenging lane conditions and to improve certified tournament average integrity, the United States Bowling Congress will make several enhancements to the Sport Bowling program for the 2015-2016 season, which starts Aug. 1. Leagues choosing to compete on Sport lane patterns now will have the opportunity to report as a Sport/Challenge league without submitting lane tapes or requiring bowlers to purchase membership upgrades. The USBC Sport membership, including the awards program, will be discontinued as bowlers no longer will need to purchase a membership upgrade to compete in Sport leagues. “We are removing what historically has been noted as the two largest barriers to participation – the membership cost for the bowler and the additional work required by those running Sport leagues – so more leagues can take advantage of Sport patterns,” YOUTH TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Teen Bowlers Circuit & TBC Jr. Contact: Brad Ellis, at bradellis8101@gmail.com June 7th - TBC/TBC Junior Red Bird Lanes, Duncanville, TX, Two Qualifying squads, top 6 to match play finals. USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. “Removing the barriers will improve the average integrity for all certified tournaments, which is the key reason for the adjustment to the program.” The Sport Bowling page of BOWL.com will re-launch July 1 with complete information and reference materials for bowlers, league secretaries and proprietors. The page will have Sport Bowling patterns, video tips on how to play certain Sport patterns, ideas for league formats and more information to help start and run a Sport Bowling league. “USBC will lose some revenue as part of the switch, but average integrity is important to the future growth of the sport,” Murphy said. “We also want to encourage bowlers and leagues to take advantage of any Sport Bowling options they choose. Whether it is PBA Experience, Kegel Challenge, World Bowling or others, we should see more competitionlevel patterns in use because the process will be as simple as certifying the league with the new designation with no paperwork or tapes required.” Starting with the 2015-2016 season, leagues that want to compete on Sport Bowling conditions will designate as a Sport/Challenge league on the league application form; bowlers competing in the league will have a corresponding icon next to their average for that league. Because Sport Bowling conditions are more challenging than typical league conditions, bowler averages on Sport conditions usually are lower. Designating these leagues moving forward will assist league and tournament operators in automatically adjusting averages for a bowler. The Sport Bowling Average Adjustment Scale also has been modified, based on data of more than 20,000 averages, as part of the Sport Bowling makeover. The new chart can be found here. The scale, of course, does not supersede a tournament director’s ability to adjust any bowler’s average upward for a tournament. The Sport Bowling program started with the 2000-2001 season in response to technology changes in the sport. Sport Bowling emphasizes the bowler’s ability to make consistently accurate shots and to know when to make necessary adjustments. Most major USBC events, the PBA Tour, PWBA Tour and World Bowling events are conducted on Sport Bowling patterns. Although there were no changes at the top of the leaderboard this week, several competitors found their way into the top 10. On May 27, Rose Bowl Lanes of Newark, New York, moved into ninth place in Regular Team after games of 1,017, 1,074 and 1,094 for a 3,185 series. Team NABR of West Henrietta, New York, leads Regular Team with 3,368. Brian LeClair led the way for Rose Bowl Lanes with a 694 series and was joined by Alex Aguiar (646), Ken Muscato (643), USBC Hall of Famer Doug Kent (613) and former Junior Team USA member Chris Bardol (589). The following day, two members of Rose Bowl Lanes’ crossing team made a run at the doubles lead, as Ryan Kretchmer of Rochester, New York, and Mark D’Angelo of Elmira, New York, settled into third place in Regular Doubles with a 1,384 total. D’Angelo led the effort with a 705 set, while Kretchmer added 679. Anthony Simonsen of Princeton, Texas, and Mark Sleeper Jr., of Kaufman, Texas, lead with 1,409. Robby Porter of Rancho BOWLER FRIENDLY PRO SHOPS & OTHER SERVICES 817-558-0404 Cordova, California, made his run at the Regular Singles lead May 29. He opened with the fifth 299 game of the 2015 tournament and added 215 and 254 for a 768 effort, which is sixth overall. Ronnie Sparks Jr. of Redford, Michigan, leads with 793. A look ahead There will be one live stream broadcast from the 2015 USBC Open Championships this week. Three-time titlist John Janawicz will lead Lodge Lanes Too as they look to recapture the Regular Team title live on BowlTV on June 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern. The talented group took home the 2013 crown with a then-record score of 3,538 and nearly saw their companion team, Lodge Lanes Kids, take the top spot at the 2014 Open Championships, before finishing fourth overall. Lodge Lanes Too also will feature former Team USA member Vernon Peterson and USBC Hall of Famer Norm Duke, who will be making his first Open Championships appearance since 1983, while Lodge Lanes Kids includes former collegiate standouts Aaron Lorincz and Jon Trzcinski. The final 50-year celebration of the 2015 event also is slated for this week as Richard Supanich of Burbank, Illinois, is scheduled to become the 12th bowler of the year to join the exclusive club. He’ll hit the lanes June 5 at 7 p.m. Eastern. NDO Continued from Page 1 Detour Singles had an exciting finish as Chris Muscarello needed to double in the 10th for the title. It’s the 7th annual ARCA Bowlathon that features over 300 bowlers in 48 teams between 10.30 am and 3.30 pm, alongside a silent auction, free gourmet lunch for over 450 people, and this year, a new “Mayors on Strike for ARCA” event starting at 12 noon. Organized by Rio Rancho Mayor, Gregg Hull, nine Mayors from Albuquerque, Belen, Santa Fe, Rio Communities, Moriarty, Edgewood, Corrales and Bosque Farms and the host, Hull, a former league bowler at Tenpins, the sponsors have pledged $ 1,000 per strike bowled by the Mayors, up to $15,000. The aim is to raise over $ 100,000 adding to the more than $ 500,000 raised in the Bowlathon’s first six years, and underwritten completely again by former Corrales businessman, Bob Scanlon, now living overseas. While the bowling squads are fully booked, interested people can join the crowd for lunch and to bid on the dozens of silent auction items available for viewing between 11 am and 2 pm. * Sam Pinge of Albuquerque won his second Scratch Series title at Tenpins & More on Memorial Day, beating six-time winner, Dana Miller-Mackie 278-194 in the championship match. Pinge fired ten strikes from twelve deliveries to capture the $ 1,000 top prize. In earlier TV matches, last start winner, J D Nance of Rio Rancho eliminated Bob Dillman 208-161 and looked to have second-seeded MillerMackie covered until a disastrous tenth frame during which his bowling hand cramped twice as he tried to throw the ball. The first shot took out only four pins, losing him count after a five-bagger of strikes. Worse still, he left an almost impossible split (2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10). On the next attempt, he cramped again missing in the left gutter. The score of 212 gave Miller-Mackie a chance to win with a double and good count, which she did with the help of a brooklyn strike for 220. “Pinge bowled a really strong championship game that would have beaten everyone that day on a touchy sport lane condition”, said tournament director, Steve Mackie. * Jeff Jones of Corrales won Sunday’s sweeper for paid entry in to the $ 65,000 New Mexico Open beating Ron Michel 233-178 . The next roll-off is at 9.30 am on Sunday June 14. * Calendar: Sat Jun 6: 7th ARCA Bowlathon from 10.30 am - 3.30 pm Sun Jun 7: Color Pin Cash at 9.30 am Fri Jun 12: Staff Challenge at 10.30 am Fri Jun 12-Sun Jun 14: Opening squads in 7th Summer Handicap Games Sun Jun 14: New Mexico Open Sweeper at 9.30 am 1202 Huisache, New Braunfels, TX 78130 830-625-6263 www.fiestabowlinglanes.com 2015 Summer League Schedule Time 6:00 PM 6:30 PM 12:00 PM 6:45 PM Wed. 7:00 PM Type 4-ANY 3-ANY 2-ANY 4-ANY 3-ANY Start Date 5/31 6/1 5/26 5/26 5/27 Fri. 4-ANY 5/29 6:30 PM $15 Day Sun. The United States Olympic Committee has specific requirements for selecting players to compete in the event. Two men and two women will represent Team USA at the event, which is considered the most important event in the four-year cycle of the Team USA bowling program.
