Burkett, a two-time all-star
with the San Francisco Giants
and Atlanta Braves, is returning to Professional Bowlers
Association competition in
pursuit of a childhood dream
when the PBA Wolf Open, the
first leg of Oklahoma’s Grand
Casino Resort PBA Summer
Swing, gets underway Monday
at FireLake Bowling Center.

In the first Age Bracket
Tourney held in Shreveport,
LA, Pete Thomas qualified
first in the 50-59 age group
to receive a bye, then defeated Delery Matherne and
Joe Lecroy to survive the 50-59
division. Jerry also earned a
bye, then defeated Leo Markwardt and Fred Barnes to win
the 70 & over division. Gordon
Stuntz qualified 6th, then
defeated General Whitfield,
John Shuffler, Rick Minier and
Randy Summers to reach the
bowler who lives in Southlake,
Texas, will compete in his first
PBA Tour event since the 2007
GEICO Classic in Irving, Texas,
when he bowled at the PBA’s
invitation and finished in 54th
place. Burkett, who will be 50
on Nov. 28, reinstated his PBA
membership in March with an
eye on getting ready for the
PBA50 Tour in 2015.

In the final game, Pete got
lined up early and shot 279
to lock it up. Jerry had 225 to
Gordon’s 190 to grab the 2nd
spot.

event. They put $2500 in the
prize fund.
The scoring was high in
qualifying, especially in the 5059 group. Joe Lecroy, Bob Troutt,
Mark Busscher, Rick Cheshier all
had 300 games. In the finals, the
60 year olds shot big.
As always, the matches
are thrilling to watch. The
2nd game often produces a
complete turnaround of the
first game. Almost every match
seems to come down to the last
few frames.
Our next tournament is the
Regular Trio at Cityview in
Fort Worth, TX. Then, the next
week-end is a regular singles at
Tomball Bowl in Tomball, TX.

SHAWNEE, Okla. — After
averaging 256.5 for his first six
qualifying games, Chris Barnes
of Double Oak, Texas, started
Monday night’s final qualifying
round in the Professional Bowlers Association’s Wolf Open at
FireLake Bowling Center with
a 279 game and never looked
back in earning the top berth
for Saturday’s stepladder finals.
Barnes, a 17-time PBA Tour
title-winner, completed the
12-game qualifying portion of
the Wolf Open with an overall
249 average and 2,989 pins to
win the top spot in the finals
by 136 pins over Mike Fagan
of Fort Worth, Texas. In 12
games, Barnes had only one
open frame – a split he failed
to convert in the ninth frame of
his final game.

day after missing the stepladder finals of the PBA Wolf
Open by four pins, 14-time Professional Bowlers Association
Tour champion Tommy Jones
of Simpsonville, S.C., raced
away with the top qualifying
berth for the finals of the PBA
Bear Open at FireLake Bowling
Center Tuesday.
Jones, who hasn’t won a
PBA Tour title on American
soil since the 2008 GEICO
Championship in West Babylon, N.Y., averaged 220.5 for 12
games on the most difficult of
the Oklahoma’s Grand Casino
Resort PBA Summer Swing
lane conditioning patterns, a
flat 40-foot condition that is
almost identical to the U.S.
Open lane oiling pattern. Jones
finished with a 2,646 pinfall
total to top No. 2 qualifier Bill
O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., by
24 pins.

I hope you had a chance to
watch some of the PBA Summers Swing from Shawnee, OK
last week via the PBA’s Xtra
Frame.
And judging by the fact that
only 5000 people subscribe to
PBA’s Xtra Frame, I’m guessing
most of you didn’t.
I on the other hand do
subscribe, and did watch a ton
of it. Genie and I put in on the
TV and watched it every night
this week. It really is the best
way to watch bowling these
days; where else can you see
ALL the bowlers for an extended period of time. You get
to see how the lanes transition,
what balls they’re throwing,
get expert commentary from
the actual players, and see your
local heroes in action.
On Wednesday they even
had PBA Commissioner, Tom
Clark, in the booth with Dave
Wodka. Clark provided some
interesting thoughts into the
state of the PBA and what it
MIGHT take to turn the tide.
Keep in mind that there is no
magic bullet for how to get
more money into bowling, or
more viewership for bowling.
I’m a strong believer that
watching bowling on-line is
the way to go; I don’t see any
benefit in having bowling on
ESPN or any other network
TV channel. It hasn’t led to
additional money or sponsors
in the last 20 years, so maybe
we go a different direction.
Clark’s main message that
I took away was that bowlers
need to quit being so negative
and be part of the solution. He
cited several examples of when
other sports and fans have
made noise for their game that
it paid off in a positive way.
Bowlers are largely critical of
the two main bowling leaders,
the USBC and the PBA. But
if we could be honest for a
second, who cares more about
saving bowling than those two
entities!
The USBC and the PBA
are doing everything in their
power to improve bowling and
bring attention to the game.
Are they perfect, no. Are they
giving 100%, I believe they are.

Speaking of the Summer
Swing, there were some good
performances from local bowlers, but none as exciting as the
one by Anthony Lavery-Spahr.
ALS finished 13th in the Wolf,
9th in the Badger, and 13th in
the Oklahoma Open. To go
with that, he was leading with
three games left in the Badger,
and after the first round of
matchplay in the Oklahoma
Open.

back. Once the pressure was off
I realized that my swing was
looser and I threw ball a lot
better,” said Lavery-Spahr.
In the Badger Open he shot
710 the first three games of
semi-finals and was leading
with three to go. From there
he got distracted by another
bowler having a meltdown to
his left and let it get to him;
that led to a bad game and
ultimately took him out of contention. “Against the best the
bowlers in the world you can’t
let that happen; you can’t give
pins away. Instead of slowing
down and taking my time, I got
fast and lost my concentration,”
he added.
This is only the second national PBA event for ALS after
bowling the World Series of
Bowling last year. In that one
he said he was more concerned
with not doing anything wrong
and just getting used to the
environment than worrying
about his score.
This time he was much
more relaxed and comfortable,
and it certainly showed in the
results.
“I will keep applying what
I learned, you can only worry
about one shot at a time and
nothing else,” advised Anthony.
He also learned something
else last week; that he can
compete with the best bowlers
in the world and on any given
day he can beat them.
“It was an awesome week
and an awesome feeling. I’ve
wanted to do this for the last
few years, and it felt great. To
know that if I compete at my
best, I can compete against
anyone. If I perform, make the
shots, make the spares I can
win,” he said.
Something else that LaverySpahr thought was pretty cool
was the amount of support he
got received through Facebook.
He said that people he doesn’t
interact with that often were
even sending him messages of
congratulations. “The bowling
community is awesome; to
know that I’m surrounded with
this kind of support is very
motivating,” he said.
He also got a lot of support
when it counts, at the event,
and from the one person you
hope is in your corner. “I really
want to thank Del Ballard for
all he did for me. I’m not on
Storm staff, but he still checked
on me all the time, and drilled
me two balls. As the Storm
Ball Rep, he didn’t have to
do that, but he did. I really
sincerely want to say thanks
for everything,”added ALS.
It’s great to see the next
generation of bowlers from the
Southwest area begin to make
their presence known on the
national stage. It’s been a while
since we’ve seen new names
from this area perform well at
the highest level, but they are
here now, and that’s a good
thing!

How long have you been
bowling? I grew up at Cowtown, both my parents worked
there. My dad was the head
mechanic, and my mom
worked the night shift at the
front corner. So since I was
always around it I decided to
get into it.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? Norm Duke is one
of my all-time idols. For the
newer generation I like the
way EJ Tackett throws the ball,
I wish I could get that much
on the ball with that much
control.

bowled? I don’t really keep
track but around 10 or so.
Thoughts on your big night?
Everything was going right,
I know how my team breaks
down the lanes and there was
no crazy transition that night.
The only thing that I thought
about was that I wished I
would have carried the 10-pin
in the second game to shoot
back to back 300’s.
What ball did you throw?
The Storm Hy Road
Who drills your balls? Xeno
Garcia drilled that one, but
now I drill my own stuff.
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? If I could bring
any ball back, it would be the
Ebonite The One, all the balls
in that series were great.

about the PBA50 Tour, so I got
my (PBA) card,” Burkett said.
“The Summer Swing came
along, I live in Fort Worth,
which is only three hours
away, and things just fell into
place, so it was a no-brainer for
me to enter.”
Bowling as a professional
has always been Burkett’s
dream, beginning as a youngster when his first job was
setting up pins at Wedgwood
Lanes, a duckpin center in his
Beaver, Pa., hometown. He
discovered tenpin bowling at
a different center, but he said
the day Wedgewood Lanes
converted to tenpins was “the
greatest gift I ever got. I told
them I’d work for free if they’d
let me bowl for free.
“I wanted to be a professional bowler before I ever
took up baseball. Bowling was
my favorite sport, for sure,” he
said. His bowling aspirations
got pushed aside, however,
when he found out he also had
exceptional skills throwing a
baseball.
Burkett pitched for the San
Francisco Giants, Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, Atlanta
Braves and Boston Red Sox
during a 16-year career that
began in 1987 and ended with
his retirement in 2003 at age
38. He posted a 166-136 record
with 1,766 career strikeouts. He
was an all-star with the Giants
in 1993 (when he contended for
the National League Cy Young
Award with a 22-7 record) and
in 2001 with the Braves.
“A lot of these guys (bowling in the Summer Swing)
don’t understand that I’m kind
of in awe of them,” he said.
“Guys like Pete Weber and
Norm Duke and Parker Bohn
and Walter Ray Williams were
my bowling heroes when I was
younger. I’ve never missed a
PBA show on TV since I was

“Even when I went to spring
training, I had my VCR in the
car so I could tape shows and
I had two bowling balls in the
front seat of my car. I drove
to spring training one time
and my wife – my girlfriend
then – had make the trip
from Pennsylvania to Arizona
with her feet on the balls,” he
added with a grin. “And during
spring training, I’d find some
little local tournament with a
$50 first prize for whatever. I
couldn’t wait for our workouts
to be over to I could go bowl.
“I’ve been a PBA fan my
whole life. I’m pretty much the
same age as these guys, but to
be able to hang out with the
guys I followed all those years?
Absolutely that’s what I want to
do,” he continued. “Ultimately
the goal would be to win one
of those events. I’m not sure
I have a chance, but I’m not
afraid to put in the work, and I
like the challenge.”
PBA fans will remember
that Burkett bowled in a handful of PBA Tour events a few
years back. He made his debut
in 1990 in Pinole, Calif.
“When I was with the
Giants, word got out that I liked
bowling, so the PBA invited
me to bowl in Pinole,” he said.
“I also bowled in Sacramento,
an ABC Masters, the Days Inn
Open in Dallas – where I was
in the cut until the last squad
and finished 32nd,” he said.
“I bowled when my baseball
schedule allowed and when it
wasn’t inconvenient for my family. I kind of picked my spots.
“Even now, people ask if I’m
going to get back into baseball,
coaching or something, but
I say, no I’m doing this,” he
continued. “I work; I have some
other businesses I do, but now
I have time to do what I want,
and I have always wanted to
bowl. I have three kids who
are ready for college, but now
I have time to play the sport I
dreamed of as a kid, and play at
a high level. I don’t care much
for league bowling. I want this
kind of challenge. Every time I
come out here I’m nervous, so I
want to get to the point where I
can bowl on a fairly consistent
basis so I can get over that.
“I’ve gotten rusty,” he
added. “I blew my right knee
out skiing two years ago, and
it’s just getting back to normal.
I’m bowling about 30 games
in league and I bowl the USBC
Open Championships. I’ll do
these (Summer Swing) events
and I’m looking at bowling in
the PBA World Series in Las
Vegas this fall.”
Burkett has played baseball
at the highest level, and he has
had experience with bowling
at the highest level, so he’s approaching the Summer Swing
with realistic attitude about
what he can do.
“What I really think I can
do is cash in the overall here,”
he said. “That’s kinda what
my goal is. It’s not the money;
it’s when we get done with all
three patterns, I want to be
among the top 40. I think I’m
pretty versatile. I want to learn
and get better.”

the Swing) will be televised
by CBS Sports Network on
consecutive Tuesday nights at
7 p.m. ET, beginning with the
Wolf Open finals on June 3.
“I had a strong enough
ball to control the gutter shot,
and I took some of the patchy
spots out of play,” Barnes said.
“I didn’t have nearly as much
difference in ball reaction from
pair to pair as the other guys
had.
“Last year (in Milwaukee)
I made some mistakes and I
didn’t use my equipment to my
advantage,” he added. “This
year I came into the Wolf Open
more determined to stay in
control of the pocket rather
than worry about my pin carry,
and it worked out.”
Barnes finished 17th in
last year’s Wolf Open, the
worst of his five 2013 Summer
Swing events, and he won the
Milwaukee Open – last year’s
version of this year’s Oklahoma
Open – with a 246-237 decision
over Norm Duke in the title
match.

finals will be contested at 2:30
p.m. CT on the special lane
installation at the Grand Event
Center. The finals will air on
CBS Sports Network on Tuesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. ET.
Pacing the Bear field was
a bit of redemption for Jones
after Monday’s disappointing
finish.
“It wasn’t the finish that
bothered me as much as I
threw a couple of shots into
the gutter and missed the TV
show by four pins,” he said.
“Leaving those pins out there is
what leaves a bitter taste in my
mouth.”
Jones also is aware it’s been
six years since he has won a
title in the U.S. He has won
three times in PBA International Tour events since then,
but overcoming hip and neck
injuries over the past five-or-so
years has been frustrating.
“To win in the U.S. is definitely a goal, and to go in feeling healthy is a good thing,” he

Five bowlers roll perfect
games at 2014 USBC Open
Championships
The number of perfect
games at the 2014 United
States Bowling Congress Open
Championships increased to
21 this week at the National
Bowling Stadium.
The first to roll 12 consecutive strikes was Christopher
Smith of Madison Heights,
Mich., a 27-year-old right-hander who started his team event
May 14 with games of 180 and
195 before finishing with the
300 game for a 675 series.
Marc Massie of Alexandria,
Ky., ended his team event
May 16 with a 300 game.
The 44-year-old right-hander,
who tied for fifth in Regular
Doubles in 2013 with Patrick
Dombrowski, added games of
223 and 236 for a 759 series.
Mike Maerder of Dousman,
Wis., rolled his first career
perfect game May 17 during
his last game of doubles. The
39-year-old right-hander started
his set with 169 and 186 for a
career-best 655 series.

years on the lanes at the
United States Bowling Congress
Women’s Championships, Mini
Tvaska of St. Petersburg, Fla.,
decided to take the year off and
did not compete alongside her
teammates this week at the
2014 event.
The 96-year-old started her
tournament career at the 1947
event in Grand Rapids, Mich.,
and had been to every tournament since. She is the event’s
participation leader and one of
just four women to eclipse the
60-year participation mark. Her
record-setting appearance came
at the 2008 USBC Women’s
Championships in Detroit,
where she competed for the
62nd time.
California bowler takes lead at
RSCC
Stacy Rafferty of Eureka,
Calif., took advantage of the
new divisional structure at the
2014 USBC Women’s Championships and made her way to the
top of the Division 6 Singles
standings May 20.
She rolled games of 181, 166
and 184 for a 531 series and
Vt., and Ian Parker of Burlington, Vt., each rolled a 300
game May 19 during doubles
and singles. Copping struck
first, firing his perfect game
in the last game of doubles
for a 722 series, while Parker
sandwiched his 300 between
games of 216 and 235 for a 751
series in singles.
Copping had 760 in singles
and 744 in team to move into
third place in Regular AllEvents with 2,226. Anthony
LaCaze of Melrose Park, Ill.,
leads with 2,273.
Two teams crack 3,500 mark
at National Bowling Stadium
The 11thFrame.com 1 of Oregon, Wis., and Storm Cincinnati of Cincinnati teams moved
into the top 10 in Regular Team
on May 16 with series of 3,502
and 3,501, respectively.
The 11thFrame.com 1 group
posted games of 1,212, 1,207
and 1,083, while Storm Cincinnati had 1,112 and 1,104 before
rolling the second-highest
game in USBC Open Championships history (1,285) to reach
its final total.
The teams are fifth and
sixth, respectively, in Regular
Team. Motion Plus Lanes of
Cudahy, Wis., leads with a
record score of 3,561, and
123Bowl.com of Naugatuck,
Conn., owns the single-game
record of 1,299, rolled earlier
this year at the NBS.

“If you don’t like matches
being close and games coming
down to final frame, you’re in
the wrong business,” O’Neill
said. “That’s why we do what
we do. If you lead by 100 pins,
when it’s over, it’s over; it’s
kind of anticlimactic. When
it’s tight like this was and you
lead, there’s no better feeling.”
O’Neill, who has admittedly
been in a funk over the past
couple of years, said he discovered a flaw in his game only a
couple of weeks ago, and that
was the difference here.
“On my fourth step in my
delivery, I was drifting to the
right instead of going straight,”
he said, “so my arm swing was
going off to the right which
means the ball could go either
direction. When I straightened
out my fourth step, the ball fell
right into place. Now if I throw
a bad shot, I know exaxtly
what to do to fix it.”

In last week’s column, I
said Ted Turner had brought
big league sports to cable
television by putting WTBS
and his Atlanta Braves on cable
systems across the country
in the early 1980s. Imagine if
another individual television
network owner took the PBA to
more television exposure and
prize funds than it ever knew
before. Common for the era,
programming was rebroadcast
at all hours of the day. TV
finals could have been seen
by many different age groups
at different times of the day,
something advertisers can use
to their advantage.
Ask any male, 1980s
era, college student, about
Australian Rules Football or
America’s Cup sailing. That is
what ESPN used to fill up its
midday and overnight schedule, becoming well-known
nearly overnight.
Turner could have started
his own league, as he tried
to do with the NFL. If things
had not gone well, who knows
what may have happened to
the PBA Tour.

Here’s a quick quiz. Based
on the following description,
name the following television
show. This show had great
ratings for quite a long time,
making its network a decent
profit, as well as a big splash
in American pop culture. But
in its last few seasons, its
overall ratings fell about fifteen
percent, most notably in the
key 18-49 age group. The most
surprising find in the seasonend ratings, is its core audience
is over the age of 50. Ten years
ago, it was firmly planted in

successful television shows
go through this cycle. If you
would have said ABC’s Pro
Bowlers Tour, you would not
be too far off.
The problem for ‘A.I.’
according to media experts was
its overall audience wasn’t getting enough younger viewers in
the last five seasons. It started
to suffer from the worst thing
that happens to a TV show, its
audience was dying off.
You may be surprised to
hear whispers that the peak of
talent shows may have passed.
Shows like this were around
in the early days of television,
starting in the 1950s. Overall
ratings for ‘American Idol’ and
‘The Voice’ are lower from not
only last year to this year, but
the start of this season to now.
Saturation? Could be. Even
Simon Cowell’s ‘X-Factor’ could
not buck the trend. It’s been
cancelled.
Will these shows disappear
as fast as the PBT on ABC?
Not soon, anyway. Like the
reality show ‘Survivor’, the
talent shows have been on long
enough to develop a core audience, but the younger viewers
who are left have found other
shows, or found something else
to watch on their iPhones.

In a related item from
several weeks ago, I explained
how Vince McMahon was
starting his own live-stream
service for World Wrestling
Entertainment, bypassing local
cable systems pay-per-view
operations. This past week,
WWE stock lost around one
third of its value, roughly $350
million due to two different
developments.
The first was the online
live-stream subscription
revenues would not replace
the cable-based pay-per-view
income until 2015. Only
670,000+ subscribers ordered
the $10/month service, rather
than the 1.4 million needed to
exceed the PPV income later
this year at the latest.
According to Forbes
magazine, stock dropped from
nearly $20/share to just over
$11/share.
Secondly, NBC Universal
did not offer what investors
expected to carry its weekly series ‘Raw’ on the USA Network.
The rights fee was only a 50%
increase from the last contract,
not the 200-300% increase
investors were anticipating.
WWE’s stock price doubled
during the first three months
of 2014, due to the contract
talks and the new live-stream,
closing at a record high of
$31.39 on March 20. With that
increase, McMahon become
a billionaire for the first time
since 2000.
Some other news sources
took the angle of McMahon
losing one third of his personal
fortune, almost trying to pin
his shoulders to the mat in its
reports.
So if you saw a headline
somewhere which read, “Vince
McMahon No Longer A Billionaire,” you now know the story.
Like the man who shaved
McMahon’s head in the ring a
few years ago, Donald Trump,
this will be just a temporary
setback. He and the WWE
are still worth a paltry $650
million.
Compare the WWE
subscriber base to the 5000
subscribers of PBA’s XtraFrame.
Imagine if PBA Commissioner Tom Clark had this
problem on his plate?

At least bowling doesn’t
have the problems of Major
League Baseball. Here’s the
latest chapter in what they
have been wrestling with
this season. Despite its replay
implementation this season,
another nagging problem
remains.
The MLB office is still
concerned about the length
of games, trying to balancing
advertising revenue while
keeping the attention of its
fan base. Now averaging a
few ticks shy of three hours,
games in 1963 averaged were
reportedly a half-hour less at
2:30. When I worked as a disc
jockey/board tech at a small radio station carrying Minnesota
Twins games in the early 80s,
commercial time between half
innings was only a minute and
fifteen seconds. That is now
two minutes for most games,
increasing to two and a half
minutes on Saturday games on
Fox and Sunday night ESPN
games.
