Welcome to our Summer 2014 Collection of W. Britain model soldiers.
As indicated by our cover, we recognize the approaching 100th Anniversary
of the outbreak of the “War to end all Wars.” In fact, the Twentieth Century
would see a second World War again from 1939 to 1945 followed by a long
period of what would be referred to as the Cold War. This Cold War was
punctuated by a series of smaller conflicts and policing actions around the
world and every one could be connected to the causes and effects of the
first World War.
We will continue to add to our 1916-18 collection
while offering early war selections in this and upcoming
catalogues. This will include many new scenic elements and
accessories to complement our WWI and WWII Collections.
Our new Jack Tars & Leathernecks Collection of Marines
and Sailors from around the world continues to grow with
several new additions that we think are long overdue. We hope you enjoy these as
much as we did while researching and designing them.
You we see that we have finally added to the 78th Highland Regiment circa
1869-1871. If you are ever visiting Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, make it a point to
see Fort George, the massive masonry fortress finished in 1856 and restored to its
Victorian splendor by Parks Canada and is a national historic site.

Glossary
You will notice two distinctly different types of figures in
our catalogues, gloss finish and matte finish. The matte
figures are 56/58mm-1/30 scale and are painted in a hyperrealistic style with shading and highlighting, all with a matte
finish for an added touch of realism. The glossy figures are
a true 54mm figure and are painted in the classic style with
simple, neat painting finished in a high gloss lacquer.

The British Army sent to mainland Europe in
1914 was referred to as the British Expeditionary
Force or BEF.
The BEF was made up of six divisions of British
regular army and reserves, but by the end of
1914, after the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the
Aisne and Ypres, the old regular British Army
had suffered massive casualties.

These “Old Contemptibles” as they had
been nicknamed, had lost most of its fighting
strength but had managed to help stop the
German advance.
Recruitment of replacements, creation
of new divisions and the expansion of the
Territorial Force rebuilt the army on the
Western front with over 5,399,563 men
serving in Europe, the maximum strength
being 2,046,901 men at any one time.

By the fall of 1914, the war on the Western front became a stalemate with both sides digging in
creating a complex series of trenches and bunkers and settling in to a war of attrition. Although an
individual unit’s time in the front-line trench was often as little as one day to as much as two weeks at a
time before being relieved, the casualty rate was often ten percent or more.
The real killer was disease from the poor sanitary conditions in the trenches with dysentery, typhus,
cholera and various fungal infections. These poor conditions combined with the stress of combat and
the incessant artillery barrages could break a man leaving lifelong scars.

Early in the war, both sides understood that traditional assault
tactics against the elaborate defensive systems of trenches and
strongpoints would be very costly with little results. By 1915,
the Germans had created special pioneer assault detachments
designed to infiltrate with fire and movement supported
by machine guns, flamethrowers and localized field artillery
support. These were referred to as Strosstruppen or Storm
Troopers and their methods became the basis of all modern
small-unit infantry tactics.
The new assault method had men rushing forward in small
groups using whatever cover was available and laying down
suppressive fire for other groups in the same unit as they

moved forward. The new tactics were intended
to achieve tactical surprise attacking the weakest
parts of an enemy’s line and bypassing his
strongpoints. Junior leaders were expected to
exercise initiative on the spot reacting to events as
they occurred and any enemy strongpoint which
could not been overrun by the assault troops
could be attacked by the second echelon troops
following them.

British Infantry and cavalry of the BEF soon learned that the new weapons and tactics of
the new century would change the face of war. The nineteenth century reality of a spirited
charge with lance and sword sweeping the enemy before them was gone forever.
Although most major armies continued to maintain and deploy cavalry well into the
twentieth century, their role would be changed forever by the end of the First World
War. The offensives of the 1917-1918 period were a preview of what was to come and
by World War II, the offensive role of the horse became primarily supply, support and the
movement of artillery.

Collection has new additions to our
British Marine of the 1770s and the U.S.
Marine of Post-World War II.
On 5 April 1755, His Majesty’s Marine
Forces was established under Admiralty
control. During the American War
for Independence, the Marines were
heavily engaged and also became the
inspiration for the new United States
Marines. In 1802, His Majesty’s Marines
were awarded the Royal title and their
uniform facings became blue like all
other Royal regiments.
We offer some our first Navy figures
in this collection this summer with both
U.S. and Royal Navy figures of the 1930s
and 40s, with additional releases to
follow soon.

The 78th Regiment (Highland) of Foot was raised on 7 March 1793, and served in the French
Revolutionary Wars, the Napoleonic Wars, the First Anglo-Afghan War, the Anglo-Persian War and
the Indian Mutiny. It was in Canada from 1867 to 1871 spending two and a half years in garrison in
Halifax, Nova Scotia.
On November 25, 1871, the regiment set sail for Ireland and in April of 1873 under the “Linked
Regiments Depot System,” the 78th Highlanders were linked with the 71st Highland Light Infantry at 55
Brigade Depot, Fort George.
In 1881, it was amalgamated with 72nd Highlanders forming the 2nd Battalion of The Seaforth
Highlanders, or Ross-shire Buffs.
