E L P M L A A I S ER T A M A LW AY S L E A R N I N G Verbs G The perfect tense: regular verbs Foundation pp. 10–11 Higher pp. 8–9 Use the perfect tense to talk about actions you have done or did in the past. A lot of what you hear and read is about things that happened in the past and you will frequently be expected to talk about the past. In German, there is no difference between ‘I bought’, ‘I have bought’ and ‘I did buy’. You always have to include the German for ‘have’. Forming the perfect tense The perfect tense is made up of two parts: the auxiliary verb and the past participle (at the end of the clause). Most verbs form the perfect tense with a part of the auxiliary verb haben (to have). Regular verbs form the past participle with ge…t around the stem. The infinitive and the middle part of each sentence are given in brackets. Remember to use the correct form of haben, and the past participle at the end. D 2 He looked for his trainers at school. 3 We lived far from school and did homework on the bus. H 7 Translate this passage into German. Which form of the verb do you need here? Remember that the past participle goes at the end of the sentence. Here you will need two clauses, each with an auxiliary verb and a past participle. Remember to add an extra e to the past participle. Yesterday I needed trainers but I bought a schoolbag. Last weekend my friends and I played volleyball. It was fun and we laughed. My sister did her homework on Saturday and then she worked in the café. Later she listened to her favourite music and then she looked for her favourite book. Use a perfect tense here. Lachen means ‘to laugh’. Stimmt! Check your translations carefully: have you used the correct tenses, articles, cases and plural nouns? 8 I went to school on the bus because it was cold. 9 This evening I will do my homework at my friend’s house. 10 Yesterday my father read my report and he was very annoyed. 118 Stimmt!
