The perfect tense: regular verbs
Foundation pp. 10–11
Higher pp. 8–9
Use the perfect tense to talk about actions you have done or did in the past. A lot of what you hear and read
is about things that happened in the past and you will frequently be expected to talk about the past.
In German, there is no difference between ‘I bought’, ‘I have bought’ and ‘I did buy’. You always have to include
the German for ‘have’.
Forming the perfect tense
The perfect tense is made up of two parts: the auxiliary verb and the past participle (at the end of the clause).
Most verbs form the perfect tense with a part of the auxiliary verb haben (to have). Regular verbs form the past
participle with ge…t around the stem. (The stem is the infinitive with –en removed.)

Which form of the verb do you need here?
Remember that the past participle
goes at the end of the sentence.
Here you will need two clauses,
each with an auxiliary verb and a
past participle.
Remember to add an extra
e to the past participle.
Yesterday I needed trainers but I bought a schoolbag. Last weekend my friends and I played volleyball.
It was fun and we laughed. My sister did her homework on Saturday and then she worked in the café. Later
she listened to her favourite music and then she looked for her favourite book.
Use a perfect tense here.
Lachen means ‘to laugh’.

Read this passage about a class trip and correct the translation below. The mistakes have been
crossed out.
Now and again I come to school by train. Today I travelled by car with my dad because we are doing a
class trip to Munich. I am looking forward to the journey because I like to be together with my friend (m).
In two years we must do A Levels. That will be stressful. But I am already looking forward to the party!

2 I find my school annoying. I don’t learn French any more because I got bad marks last year. Yesterday
I wanted to send my friend a text but we’re not allowed to use mobile phones at school. I would rather
go to school in England where they are not so strict.
When you have finished, go back over your translations to check that they sound natural in German.
