Keynote Speaker
A Dis nguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Craig Haney is na onally known for his work on mi ga on evidence in capital cases and the human impact of incarcera on. He has tes fied as a social history expert in numerous capital cases and in prison-condi ons li gaon both here in California and in mul ple other jurisdic ons. His research and tes mony have been cited in opinions of the United States Supreme Court. He is the author of Death by Design: Capital Punishment as a Social Psychological System (2005) and Reforming
Punishment: Psychological Limits to the Pain of Imprisonment (2006), as well as numerous ar cles about the psychology of imprisonment and various capital trial issues. Professor Haney received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and then earned both a law degree and a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford – just as capital punishment was being reinstated in California. Applying his knowledge from both disciplines, Professor Haney quickly emerged as an authority on mi ga on and the social context of capital murder, a subject that he wrote about in the Santa Clara Law Review in an ar cle of enduring significance on social histories and the logic of capital mi ga on. He has taught at U.C. Santa Cruz since the late 1970s and at the CACJ/CPDA Capital Case Defense Seminar from its earliest days at the Asilomar Conference Center. He also regularly teaches at the Bryan R. Shechmeister Death Penalty College at the Santa Clara University School of Law. Professor Haney served as an expert witness before the California Commission on the Fair Administra on of Jusce at a public hearing in 2008 and has tes fied before Congress and other legisla ve bodies and commissions addressing prison issues. The Capital Case Defense Seminar Schedule
California Attorneys for Criminal Justice (CACJ) and the California Public Defenders’ Association (CPDA) are pleased to invite you to participate
in the 2015 Capital Case Defense Seminar (CCDS). The CCDS is an intensive educational opportunity for anyone involved in, or considering
taking on, the defense of a capital case. It is designed not only for lawyers, but also for mitigation specialists, paralegals, investigators, and experts working in capital defense. The CCDS will also include sessions addressing murder and felony charges other than capital cases.
The CACJ/CPDA Capital Case Defense Seminar is the largest of its kind in the nation. CCDS is unique in that it offers lectures as well as specialized workshops that give participants the chance to brainstorm and exchange information with other participants. Experienced practitioners in any jurisdiction and those just entering the field can benefit from the lectures and workshops featuring experienced lawyers and experts,
from both California and across the nation.
TRACKS: This year we have once again created a number of specific learning tracks that participants may choose to attend. While you need
not attend all sessions in a particular track, the tracks for the most part are set up so that each session builds off the earlier session. This year
we are offering the following tracks:
First Case (Trial), First Case (Post‐Conviction 101), Neuropsychology, Forensics, DNA, Investigation/Mitigation, & Mental Health
CASE CONSULTATION WORKSHOP: This year we will continue to provide case consultations for those who would like to consult with a faculty member, either one-on-one or as a team. We will try to assign a faculty member with expertise in an area of concern for you. For example, if
you are having difficulty uncovering the trauma in your client’s life history, the faculty member will attempt to address this concern and also try
to identify sessions during the conference that may be beneficial for you to attend. You must request a case consultation in advance by
submitting the completed questionnaire; there will be no opportunities to “walk-in” to a case consultation at the door. Approximately one
week prior to the conference, you will receive an email with the name and contact number of the faculty member who will facilitate your case
consultation.
Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Trial Counsel in California Capital Cases Require the Completion of Fifteen Hours of Capital Defense Training within the Preceding Two Years (Rule of Court 4.117(d)(6)).
