If this harsh winter ever winds down, I am sure many of us are looking forward
to pulling the cover off the Mustang, thawing out the frozen waxes and picking
the big pieces of dirt out of the clay bars. A sure sign of Spring is preparing the
cars for our get togethers and shows. I found this article from an anonymous
donor on the MCA forum, along with Larry’s informative article on the
different classes of show car, is a good start for pimping our rides.
I'm doing this little write up for people who are attending their first MCA event
or even for people who have gone to several events. It takes a lot to get your
car clean enough for an anal MCA judge and I want to share what I learned so
no one else is blind-sided like I was.
So, you've washed your car and you think its perfect. Sorry dude its probably
not up to spec for the least anal of judges. Here are some spots that judges
checked on my car that you may have not even thought of on yours or passed
over in haste of getting to the show.
1. The 4 inches of body molding under your door, ie side skirts. Judges check
the bottom of those from the edge to the pinch rail for dirt and dust so pay
extra special attention to getting this area clean for inspection. If you are an
avid detailer I wouldn't be surprised if you clayed and waxed this area and then
hit it with a QD once you got to the show.
2. Okay this next one is my own laziness. Door Sills, Door Jambs, and Hinges.
Make sure that these places shine. I was in a hurry when I was getting my car
ready and I skipped over these places and it really cost me on the scoring sheet.

3. Trunk Area: The weather stripping in between my rear windshield and the
water run-off area has caked on grime much like that kind that accumulates on
tire sidewalls. The judge actually suggested that I use a name brand cleaner
Wax to get that off. I have yet to try it but I see no reason why it shouldn't

work. This seemed to be more of a problem for my body style.
4. Truck Rain run-off area. Where the hinges attach to the car itself is an area where judges check for
cleanliness. I have yet to figure out how to properly clean this area so any input is greatly appreciated
and will be rewarded with reps.
5. Engine bay. I thought I did a great job on my engine bay but if you can't eat off your engine then its
really not good enough for an MCA judge. So make sure if you are going to attend a MCA judged event
you spend extra time getting all the dirt, grease, and oil deposits out of every single nook and cranny.
6. Interior. I usually tend to keep my car interior spotless anyway, but I spent a good two hours cleaning
my interior with some interior cleaner before the show and it was classified as "filthy" so I was a little
annoyed at that. Pay extra attention to detail when you are sprucing up the inside of your car. Make sure
to get all the knobs and switches and especially the piece of plastic that is in front of your instrument
cluster. Double check that your mirror is spotless and that your leather seats, if you have them, are
extremely clean. If you have tinted windows you need a tint safe glass cleaner to make them look
invisible. Something to clean the carpet will go a long way after you vacuum out a car if you have a light
colored carpet.
7. Undercarriage and Wheel wells. Okay I didn't get marked down for wheel wells but they spent a long
time checking them and the undercarriage. I used Adam's Invisible Undercarriage Spray it works great. It
makes your wheel wells nice and black. If your car is lowered it might be in your best interest to get your
car on jack stands and use the spray and a brush to get your wheel wells nice and clean while there isn't
any load on the suspension.
Those are the real spots I was not expecting the judge to look at and he did and I got screwed for it. So
take a lesson from me and go over these places in addition to your cleaning ritual if you plan to attend an
MCA judged event. It'll improve your chances of going home with a trophy and taking the smug look off
some anal retentive judges face. There are a few extra things to do like making sure you have a fire
extinguisher in your trunk and if you have an MCA window decal for being an MCA member you get a
point for each of those too.
So let’s get those ponies out of the corral, knock the horse crap off their hooves, clean them up, brush
them down and make them shine and then let’s go out there and get some bragging rights.

As we are trying to stay warm… We know there are only a few
more weeks until spring and our Mustangs will be bucking at the
garage doors to get out and strut off to car shows, parades and
other club activities.
Several mustangs were out during the Carl Casper Car
Show and the club received a special plaque. Please look through
our newsletter for photos and those members who won trophies.
The club’s 1st warm weather (hopefully warm) event is
St. Patrick’s Day parade, March 14th. Plan now to wear the green
as you strut your Mustang in the parade. Details will be
forthcoming.
David is busy with the planning stages for the First
Annual FordFest in October and he needs our help to make it
successful. This event is co-hosted by Bill Collins Ford and the
proceeds afford our club the means for charitable donations.
Please get with David and donate your time.
If you have not attended a club meeting in a while, mark
your calendar for MARCH 10th 6:30 pm at Bill Collins Ford. We
always have lots of fun, good food and an informative meeting.
Unfortunately, I will be traveling with my job and will not be
attending. Phil Helm, Vice President will chair in my absence.
In closing, if you have any suggestions, club activities,

Highlights from the Feb 10th meeting

Our club’s new president, Lynn Eddington, called the meeting to order.
New member Steve Fairfield introduced himself as the original owner of a piece of junk 1966
Mustang GT that is in a rebuild. Steve hopes to gain some wisdom from fellow members.
Lynn announced that members will utilize name tags at the meeting.
Lynn requested approval of last month’s meeting minutes. Paul made the motion to accept the
minutes and it was seconded.
The meeting broke for chow that was provided by Maurine and John.
George gave the club’s treasurer report. Wynn made a motion to accept the treasurer's report and
a 2nd for that motion.
Lynn gave the Road Captain's report.

Highlighted the Souper Bowl GTG, with a poster of several photos of the event. Noted that
Jenny & Loren Kloft won the cook off with their venison chili. Approx 40 members and family
attended the event.
•
Briefed about the upcoming Carl Casper car show (Feb 20-22) with 8 members and Collin's
Ford submitting entries at the show. A table will be set up with Fordfest and club
membership fliers available to pass out.

The upcoming KYANA Swap Meet was posted with the wrong dates, it is not March 7 & 8 but
instead is on Mar 21 & 22.
•
Our next club event that we can participate in will be the St. Patrick’s Day parade on March
14th. Due to a larger parade with added cost of security, this year the entry fee has been
increased from $30 to $50 for the overall club with up to 20 cars,. Requiring also the
purchase of a one dollar participation pin for each individual in the parade. A motion was
brought forwarded and second for the club to commit to this parade.
Bill Collins birthday bash (Apr 26) was briefed by David, primarily a “Show & Shine”, with some help
from club members. More information will be posted in March and April with sign up for volunteer.
Larry Rixman reminded everyone that the club’s first cruise-in will be April 25th, Kenny & Barbara will
be providing door prizes at the cruise-in.

Will be posting a newsletter article on the different MCA judging categories.

Ezekiel Elliott presented an idea to recruit younger Mustang owners into the MCA, proposed
night cruises, hang out at the mall or a park as a club to draw younger members in. It was
also mentioned for club members to meet at the various local racing tracks.
Wynn Jefferson briefed on the clubs membership of 143 member families. A reminder to all
members, if you change your address, email and/or phone, please contact Wynn for a roster update.
Also contact Wynn if you are unclear when your annual dues renewal is coming up.
Website issue was brought up, there was indications the club’s website was hacked, Joe has looked
into this and confirms it is not hacked. Terry Corder voiced an interest in taking over the website
administrator.
Jack reported an error is the Feb newsletter in correctly identifying a member’s Mustang. That will
be the Mar quiz question. Also informed the members that if they do not receive an email with a
newsletter within a day or two of the first of the month, contact Jack. Also a reminder that the
newsletter is located on the club’s web site

David gave an update on the DCMC & Bill Collins FordFest coming up this Oct 10th with a Pony Trail
on the 9th. Ten dollar entry fee but the big money comes from the sponsorships. Volunteers are
needed and requested to sign up for various positions.
Charitable donations were discussed in detail.
Joe Schreiner was selected to take over the position of Road Captain.
Lynn acknowledged all the newly elected and appointed members of the DCMC.
Kenny held the 50/50 drawing, Gary Atwood won 19 bucks and the club’s food fund made $19. Gary
almost immediately passed that money off to his wife, must be a practiced procedure in that
household.

I'm a divorced and still single native Texan and Desert Storm Veteran.
I became a dad at 34 and have a ten year old son that I'm very proud of, his name is
Zachary . He's been elected to Vice President of his class at school, he's on the Academic
Team, a straight A student, a Blue belt in Tae-Kwon-Do, and he's a Soccer star.
I knew that I would always have a Mustang in my life when I "stole" my mom's car to
pick up Tracy Bates for my first date ever, and she gushed "YOU HAVE A
MUSTANG?!?!" Mom had a red beat up 1979 four cylinder Mustang, but apparently
when you're sixteen, that's all you need. (wink)
I've traveled the world while on Active Duty with the Army and can no longer remember all the countries
that I've been to, but some that stick out in my memory are; Germany, Italy, France, Norway,
Czechoslovakia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Austria, Hungary, and of course Mexico.
I've had a total of sixteen different Mustangs over the years. Currently I'm driving a White and Black
2008 GT Premium Convertible that I've customized to the point that it's been called "Frankenstang" by
some friends. The car's actual name is "Dom." My son named "him" after "Dominic" a character that
had to sacrifice himself in order to save his fellow squad members from certain death in the video game
"Gears of War 3." R.I.P.

Since I bought the car, it was hit while parked by a soccer mom and got a new drivers
side door. Later, I rear-ended a Dodge Challenger that stopped at a green light causing
over fourteen thousand dollars worth of damage to the front end. There were no
injuries and the Challenger hardly had a scratch on it. The tail lights didn't even
crack! Thankfully, my Mustang has been rebuilt without question by State Farm. I did
the jingle.

You did a fine job Ken, Well Done.
This month I want to talk a little about MCA National Shows. Since joining Derby City
Mustang Club and attending cruise-ins and local shows it is apparent to me that there
are a lot of DCMC members who own high quality Mustangs of all generations, yet few
members attend our MCA National shows and enter their cars to be judged.
Having your car judged is not the only reason to attend National Shows, you get to
meet other Mustang owners and see what they are doing in their local clubs, attend
seminars in Mustang related subjects, and attend the show banquet which usually has
entertainment such as a speaker from the Mustang industry.
In a typical year there are four MCA National Shows around the country, two of which
are drivable from here and two out west. This year they are In Tucson Arizona,
Grovetown Georgia (close to Augusta), Loveland Colorado, and the Grand National
Show in Columbus Ohio. So even though Tucson and Loveland may be too far to travel,
Grovetown at about 500 miles should be reachable and Columbus at about 200 miles is
an easy trip. I usually plan to arrive on Friday to go through classification and attend
any Friday night welcome ceremonies and then leave Sunday after the awards
ceremony to head home.
As I mentioned earlier, there are lots of member’s cars in DCMC which would do really
well in competition at National shows, let’s look at the various classes and their
requirements.
Thoroughbred Class- Designated for the restored or unrestored cars that are restored
or original the correct era parts. Absolutely no reproduction parts allowed.
Concours Trailered- Cars usually restored, which are in like new condition, as one
Assistant National Head judge explained to me “the best that they can be.” Judging
based on a 700 point rule list.
Concours Driven- Same as Concours Trailered except not held to the same high
standard for undercarriage since they must be driven from owner’s home to the show.

Unrestored- Unrestored cars are usually low mileage (except my SVO with over 143K
miles) with original factory parts and equipment as ordered. Judged on originality by
Thoroughbred standards with reproduction or updated Ford Service Replacement parts
not acceptable. Small imperfections in the paint, undercarriage surface rust, etc. should
be considered normal for unrestored cars.
Occasionally Driven- All vehicles in this class must be driven from the owner’s home of
record except for trailered classes. Must have current license and safety inspection if
applicable. Replacement parts should be stock, OEM or similar aftermarket parts.
Engine compartments and undercarriages will be judged in this class. Will be judged for
workmanship, cleanliness and condition only, not on authenticity.
Daily Driven- Must be the owner’s primary transportation in order to qualify for this
class. Undercarriage and engine compartment will not be judged. Paint must show daily
driving wear and tear. Also judged on workmanship, cleanliness and condition.
Modified- Modified Mustangs are those that have been changed from Ford factory
original, including but not limited to, sheet metal, paint, engine, interior, trunk and
undercarriage. Must be titled as a Mustang and have a Ford drive train. Are judged
primarily for quality of workmanship, condition and cleanliness, not authenticity. All
entries must provide the judging team with a list of modifications.
Specialty- Roush, Saleen and Shelby, 2006-2013. Follow the same rules as Occasional
Driven.
Preservation (2005)- In the past, Mustangs were required to be 10 years old to qualify
for Unrestored Class, but beginning with 2005 a new class is being set up, starting with
2005, 20 years is requirement for Unrestored with all years up to 2004 grandfathered in
at 10 years. The Preservation class will start at 10 years and will be similar to Unrestored
with its own rules.
Conservator- Class for cars which have earned 20 points at National shows and received
a Grille Medallion automatically qualify for Conservator class.
This is a brief overview of the classes to give you an idea of what you can expect if you
decide to enter in a MCA National show, if you have any questions I would be happy to
try to answer them.

The Southwest Chapter of DCMC met February 20, 2015 at Wolf Bay Lodge
restaurant. During the meeting several topics were discussed mainly northern
weather and how we have been blessed with no snow. In attendance were Joe and
Thelma Walters, Joe and Marsha Schreiner and Cathy Conlely and Tom Schultz. I am

2015 Flights:
Next Mission is tentatively scheduled for May 16, 2015, departing Louisville Int'l
Airport (SDF) to Baltimore (BWI) and return.
June 6th departing out of Louisville Airport (SDF) to Baltimore (BWI) and return.
September 26th departing out of Lexington Airport (LEX) to Baltimore (BWI) and
return.
All dates are subject to change based on funding, transportation costs, availability
and volunteer/support staff availability.
Volunteer & Guardian Training:
• If you plan on serving as a Guardian, you will be REQUIRED to attend this
informative training with emphasis on Safety and Security.
• This training is required for Guardians by our chapter and insurance company. No
exceptions can be granted.
• The next training session is to be decided and will be held TBD at the VFW Post
1170, 107 Evergreen Road, Middletown, KY 40243.
Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central Memorial Brick Program
A permanent way of recognizing those who mean so much to all of us.
Memorial bricks will be placed in a cemetery walkway used to reach the Carillon Tower and Scattering
Garden. Each 4”x8”x2 ¼” brick will be laser engraved that has a lifetime guarantee to never fade, chip,
oxidize or peel. The $100 fee goes to the upkeep of the veteran’s cemetery and is tax deductible.

Florida
“One of our club members was winter vacationing in Florida with his brand new Mustang GT
convertible . Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through
what little hair he had left. "Amazing,” he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more.
Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Florida State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He
floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, “What am I doing? I’m too old for
this!” and pulled over to await the trooper’s arrival.
Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Mustang. He looked at
his watch, then said, “Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason
for speeding – a reason I’ve never before heard – I’ll let you go..”
The old gentleman paused then said, “Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida State Trooper. I
thought you were bringing her back.”
“Have a good day, Sir,” replied the trooper.

The Derby City Mustang Club was initiated in November
1989 by a small group of Mustang enthusiasts in the
Greater Louisville area. We hold monthly club meetings
and sponsor a monthly car cruise during the summer
months. We enjoy taking our cars out for Sunday drives
as well as attending local cruises and national car
shows. Our cars include everything from Shelby GTs to
the latest Cobra, Saleen, Roush, Mach I and everything
in between. The main purpose of this club is to have
fun. The October Derby City Mustang Club and

Collins Fordfest is the highlight of our annual events.
