ENERGY TECHNOLOGY in the Capital Region Berlin-Brandenburg THE GERMAN CAPITAL REGION excellence in energy technology 10 investment advantages Berlin-Brandenburg – A region full of energy Proximity to political decision-makers and trade associations Excellent research environment Global players in the energy and environmental sector Proximity to growth markets in Central and Eastern Europe Modern transport and telecommunications infrastructure Attractive business and industry locations Highly qualified specialists and executives Good cost-benefit ratio based on favourable tax rates Tailor-made investment incentives High quality of life with low cost of living In order to promote a joint regional innovation strategy (smart specialisation), the two federal states established the Berlin-Brandenburg Energy Technology Cluster in 2011. A team of professionals combines the diverse energy competencies of the capital region, bringing together experts from industry, academia, politics and the public sector. This strengthens the added value and international competitive position of the energy sector. Key topics are: Bioenergy and wind energy; energyefficiency technologies; energy grids and storage/ e-mobility; solar power as well as turbomachinery and power plant technology. Bioenergy Whether heat, power or mobility – bioenergy is playing an increasingly important role in the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region. One of Germany’s first biogas plants was built here, in which biogas is processed to natural gas quality and fed into the natural gas grid. Seventeen research institutes are working on solutions in the fields of biogas, biofuels and biocoal as well as agroforestry systems and algae research. Since 2012, a total of 335 biogas plants have been built with an installed capacity of 182 MW. Around 21 biomass heating plants primarily use scrap wood from the wood processing industry. Brandenburg is also one of Germany’s largest producers of biofuels. Tallinn 1.270 km Stockholm 1.100 km Dublin 1.485 km Clean tech region The capital region is full of energy. In Berlin and Brandenburg, around 5,000 companies employ almost 50,000 employees achieving a turnover of more than EUR 15 billion. Numerous research institutions, universities and advanced technical colleges are committed to the field of energy technology. In 2008, 2010 and 2012, Brandenburg was awarded the ‘Leitstern’ prize for the German federal state that best utilises renewable energies. Berlin has successfully established itself as a smart city and the ‘metropolis of the green economy’. Nevertheless, the capital region is still home to numerous innovative companies in the solar power industry, e.g. in the field of module production, system integration, storage, monitoring and feed-in management. They all profit from the technology transfer from at least eight university and 13 non-university research institutes. A few of the world’s largest solar farms are also located in Brandenburg. Wind energy With an installed capacity of more than 4,800 MW, Brandenburg is Germany‘s No. 2 in power production from wind (as of December 2012). Well-known OEM manufacturers and suppliers have based themselves here, producing products such as nacelles, rotor blades and towers. Companies and research institutes in the region are also working on innovative technologies such as high-altitude (airborne) and small wind power technology. Energy efficiency partners in the region include Brandenburg Energy Saving Agency (www. zab-energie.de) and the Berliner EnergieAgentur (www.berliner-energieagentur.de). Berlin is a research and production location for innovative cogeneration technologies and is a pioneer in energy-efficient neighbourhood planning (www. kwk-modellstadt-berlin.de). Turbomachines and power plant technology have a long tradition in the capital region. The first steam turbines were manufactured as long ago as the beginning of the second half of the 19th century. The capital region is home to Europe’s greatest density of turbomachine manufacturers. The turbines produced in the capital region are the world’s best in terms of performance and efficiency. The region is also a pioneer of micro gas turbines, power plant technology, particularly with respect to flexible power plants that are operated with conventional fuels, and new types of power plants. Energy grids and storage/ e-mobility Energy networks and storage/e-mobility are of particular importance as it is here that the central issues of the network integration of renewable energies must be solved. The development of smart grids, storage concepts and innovative solutions for the synchronisation of energy supply and demand will make a significant contribution to the success of the German energy turnaround. Berlin and Brandenburg are also leading the way here. Consequently, the world’s first hydrogen/wind/biogas hybrid power plant was built in the region. This pilot project marks a milestone in using renewable energies to provide base load power. E-Smarts in Berlin The capital region is also the largest practical laboratory for electromobility in Germany, and with the most vehicles and projects as well as the largest network of public charging facilities, Berlin is ahead of all other German cities. As part of the federally funded showcase of electromobility, electric transportation will be demonstrated as part of a networked transport and energy system where information and communications technologies play a key role. The Smart Capital Region project shows how renewable sources from Brandenburg (including excess power) can be used in the city of Berlin. Leading the way in science and research The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is considered an international pioneer of interdisciplinary research into climate change. The German federal government, the EU Commission, the UN and the World Bank are just a few of the international bodies which consult its scientists. Around 40 scientific institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg are actively involved in energy topics, in particular the Technische Universität Berlin (e.g. photovoltaics, wind energy), Brandenburg University of Technology CottbusSenftenberg (power plant technology, biomass, electricity networks) as well as the universities of applied sciences in Eberswalde (awarded the prize of ‘greenest university in Germany’), Berlin, Wildau and Brandenburg an der Havel. Important research institutes are the Helmholtz Centre Berlin, the Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics (IHP), the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam (GFZ). Political focus on energy and climate Brandenburg laid down its energy-related policies and economic guidelines in the Energy Concept for 2030. Renewable energies should play a leading role, making up 32% of the total amount of primary energy consumption by 2030. Power generation using lignite is a bridging technology for the conversion to renewable energies. Economic growth and energy consumption are to be decoupled by creating higher energy efficiency. One of the main tasks of the "Berliner Landesenergieprogramm" is to support innovative companies and the technology transfer process from research into innovation. Other objectives include the development of pilot energy saving projects, particularly in the construction and trades sector, and doubling the share of renewable energies. The Berlin-Brandenburg Capital Region: Locational advantages, facts, services Where investment makes sense Berlin-Brandenburg offers excellent and customized funding programmes for businesses which are new to the region or excel in innovation. Investment incentives come in the form of direct subsidies. Funding programmes pool resources from the EU, the German federal government and the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. High quality of life Berlin, Potsdamer Platz Potsdam, Glienicker Bridge Cottbus, Altmarkt The region offers the unique combination of Berlin’s international metropolitan flair and Brandenburg’s fascinating countryside and historical places of interest. A nightlife like no other, renowned large-scale events, more than 170 museums, 150 performance venues and around 500 palaces, churches and parks – all these add up to an irresistible location. The region also offers unlimited sporting and leisure activities such as golf, horse riding, water sports and flying. Living costs, infrastructure and leisure activities are considerably more affordable than in other comparable metropolitan regions.
