Many congratulations to Ch Santasi Mashama, seen here with Sandra Taylor, her breeder and Anita Wordsworth, breeder of her sire. I will be on the lookout for a suitable pic for the July issue, so it is still not too late to send in a pic for consideration. Message from the Editor Finally, the May issue is ready to go to the printers! Later than I had hoped, but at least before the end of May! Thank you to Mandy Thomson for passing on the article on Vaccination Guidelines and other articles from vet, Clare Middle that will go into future issues. Many thanks to my daughter Vicky, who will mail this issue off for me. Show people will realise that the Pointscore Competition List is missing - that is because I have been unable to get the Hound Club results in time to get this printed. Should all be up to date in the July magazine. I have a special request - I will not be here when the next Pointscore Show (Canine Stewards Assn) takes place on the 23rd June. Would someone please take the results down for me, including the “best in class”. Hope to get to the Winter Festival shows on the 12th and 14th. CLOSING DATE FOR JULY ISSUE WILL BE 30th JUNE 3 Pauline Sadler 19th November 1949 - 29th April 2013 The Committee and members of the RRCWA offer their sincere condolences to Pauline’s husband Ian, their daughter Victoria and son Peter, Pauline’s sister Stella and all their extended family, on the sudden loss of a wonderful lady who will remain in the hearts and memories of the Ridgeback fraternity forever. 4 The Western Ridge - May 2013 Obituary - Pauline Sadler It is with profound sorrow that we advise that the Club’s President, Pauline Sadler, passed away on April 29 after a short illness. Pauline was a Founding Member of the Ridgeback Club and in effect, she was one of the driving forces in getting the club established. Pauline was born in Nairobi Kenya. Her parents were both British; her father was an engineer working for the Kenyan Government. When she was 16, the family moved back to the UK. At this time her father joined the British Government Crown Agents – an organisation carrying out construction work in overseas British Territories. In both Kenya and later when they lived in the UK, family life was dictated by her father’s work. This meant, in Kenya, voyages back to the UK every three years returning each time to different Government housing. From the UK, similarly, contracts were overseas and lasted for two or three years. Pauline and her sister Stella joined their parents whenever possible. Usually this was only at the long summer school holidays. This lifestyle meant that pets of any kind were not possible. Pauline’s deep love of animals was reserved for other people’s pets. She especially loved dogs and it was a continuous source of pain that she could never own one. Soon after marriage and moving to Australia, Pauline got her first dog – a Ridgeback she named Timau. Timau was followed by many more Ridgebacks over the next 40 years. Living for eleven years in the Northwest, Dampier and Karratha, Pauline was a Founding Member the Pilbara All Breeds Kennel Club. Deeply involved with Red Dog, both during his life and after his untimely death, her name appears on the Red dog Statue in Dampier. In later life and living in Perth, Pauline involved herself in many animal related charities. Later still she took a great interest in Australian birds. Ever helpful, she was given the task, each month, of counting Black Cockatoos at various resting places. Pauline passed away peacefully but at all too early age. Her love of nature and animals had no limits. She will be greatly and for ever missed by her close family and also her second Ridgeback Family. The Rhodesian Ridgeback Club is indebted to Ian Sadler who provided us with this insight into Pauline’s early life and touched on some of her many interests, and allowed us to use this recent photograph of Pauline. The Western Ridge - May 2013 5 President’s Report Greetings fellow Rhodesian Ridgeback owners. It is with a heavy heart that I bring you my first President’s message for the RRCWA magazine. The sad passing of our President Pauline was very sudden and unexpected. I first met Pauline about 12 years ago when I just got my first RR puppy. I travelled to her home to buy a copy of one of her books on the breed, “The Rhodesian Ridgeback in Australia”. Having a new puppy I found the book very helpful. It has sections on temperament, housetraining, obedience, training, showing and breeding. Pauline was instrumental in the formation of our club and was a steady hand on the tiller for many years. The club has lost a large advocate of the breed, someone who had great experience with Rhodesian Ridgebacks and was always happy to offer her experience to others. We recently had our Championship Show. It was a great day, the judge Lyn King was very personable and friendly with the exhibitors. The show was dedicated to the memory of Pauline and was a fitting tribute to her life with Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Thank you to Matt Benson-Lidholm for opening the show and assisting with the trophy presentations. Also thanks go to Bevan George for volunteering his time to take the photos of the dogs and Brian Pratt for being not only our Chief Steward, but also our Gate and Ring Steward, and to Kerrilee Bell who once again organised our ‘office’ for us and marked the catalogues. A big thank you must also go to Sandra Taylor who as always does a sterling job as show secretary and the main pre-show organiser. I also thank the rest of the committee for their support, Kate, Anita, Joanna, Tanya and Mandy. I have some big shoes to fill with the passing of Pauline. With your support, as members, I’m sure we can all continue to have a club of vibrant and diversified Rhodesian Ridgeback enthusiasts. If we just keep loving them and caring for them as Pauline did then we will keep her memory alive in the RRCWA. Yours in RR President Stephen WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS Brian CAMDEN of JOONDALUP Celeste BLUNDELL-CAMDEN of JOONDALUP Dayne BLUNDELL-CAMDEN of JOONDALUP Simone BAKER of BODDINGTON Jane & Neil GIBSON of KENDENUP Denise (Dee) COLE of STONEVILLE 6 The Western Ridge - May 2013 Secretary’s Report There are still a few of us around who knew Pauline from the very earliest days of the formation of the Club, when we embarked on this new world that revolved around our beautiful Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Not only was Pauline the driving force behind our early foray into the dog world but also remained our mentor and friend. In the last few years as our President, she has been the steady voice of reason in the management of the Club. She will be greatly missed. According to our Constitution, Stephen Kendall has been elevated to President, and at our last meeting we voted Sandra Taylor to the position of Vice President. They hold these positions until the next election at the 2013 AGM. Thank you to both Stephen and Sandra for taking up the reins. We are very happy to welcome Dee Cole as a new member of the Club. Dee has also been voted onto the committee, as has Monique Robins, one of existing members. Both Dee and Monique will boost the number of committee members who actively show their dogs! As more of an observer at this year’s Champ Show, I was delighted with the friendly atmosphere during the Show which was commented on by several onlookers. This portends well for next year when, in September we celebrate our 21st Annual Championship and Open Shows. Until next time - Kate Many thanks to the following Companies for their generous sponsorship of our 20th Annual Specialty Rhodesian Ridgeback Show held on 4th May. Once again, thank you also to Matt Benson-Lidholm for his regular donation of a case of red wine - much enjoyed by our class winners! The Western Ridge - May 2013 7 2013 Specialty Championship Show Critiques Judge - Mrs Lyn King (Ingwe Kennels) Firstly, I would like to thank the Committee of the RR Club (WA) for the invitation to judge at this Show. This was my first Specialty appointment since gaining my Hound licence and, as my love and ownership of the Ridgeback began in Western Australia, I considered it an honour that I was able to return here to judge this wonderful breed. Thanks also to Brian, my Steward, and Kerrilee, my Ticketwriter for their assistance and friendly attitude……….and last, but by no means least, the Exhibitors for their entry and good sportsmanship. Overall the dogs were presented in excellent show condition, however there were a few who could do with losing a few pounds. Ridges were excellent, only a couple of offset crowns and the majority of dogs had correct bites. Heads were pleasing, with lovely dark eyes. I found myself repeating “good depth of chest and length of ribbing” throughout the Show but to counter that there were quite a few with the straight/short upper arm and who lacked the visible forechest and fill in front - a common problem in Ridgies wherever you go. Again, thank you for your hospitality. I thoroughly enjoyed judging your dogs and, hopefully, I will see you ringside at another Ridgie Specialty in the future. A breeder shall only breed from registered Rhodesian Ridgebacks which conform to the breed standard, all breeding animals will have been x-rayed and scored for Hip Dysplasia, except under exceptional circumstances, and are believed to be free of other hereditary defects, they should also normally be mentally and physically sound and not suffering from acute nervousness or aggressive tendencies. 4. Bitches should not be used for breeding prior to two (2) years of age and should not be bred from on consecutive seasons (in unusual circumstances two (2) litters in three (3) seasons is acceptable) or over the age of seven (7) years. No bitch should be expected to produce more than four (4) litters or forty (40) pups in her lifetime. Should a breeder feel it necessary to go outside these limits, the opinion of a veterinarian must be sought first. 5. All puppies must be carefully examined for dermoid sinus a few days from birth and at least twice thereafter before leaving for new homes. Any puppy discovered to have a sinus before leaving the breeder should be humanely destroyed. When a sinus is detected after the puppy has been sold the breeder should, in consultation with the new owner :a) agree a financial contribution towards the operation to remove the sinus and neuter the puppy, OR b) take the puppy back and either reimburse the owner OR undertake, in writing, to supply another puppy. In this event, the puppy may be humanely destroyed or be operated upon for the removal of the sinus and neutered. Thereafter it may be retained or rehomed without charge. All new owners should be made aware of the facts about sinus, its implications for the breed and how to detect its presence. . They should be accompanied by a diet sheet, details of worming and inoculation certificate. All puppies sold must be registered. 7. Ridgeless and mismarked puppies should be registered on the Limited Register. New owners of ridgeless puppies should give an undertaking to neuter at the appropriate time. 8. Puppies should not be sold through dealers, pet shops, puppy farms, etc. Ideally, they should be sold direct after the breeder has attempted to ascertain that the new owners have the facilities, time and commitment to correctly raise, train, exercise and appreciate a large, active but sensitive hound. 9. A breeder must make every effort to rehome any of their dogs that subsequently needs it. 10. Stud dog owners must satisfy themselves as to the suitability, breeding and condition of any bitch presented to them and also as to the conditions under which any resultant litter would be reared. 11. No member should engage in false or misleading advertising or other falsification of their Rhodesian Ridgebacks, nor should they malign judges, fellow competitors, breeders or owners by making false or misleading statements about other dogs, members' practices or character. 12. When a Ridgeback must be destroyed, it will be provided with a death free of pain or suffering and where possible a veterinarian will perform the euthanasia. RECOMMENDATIONS Breeders should be available to their purchasers for consultation, even after the completion of the sale; like wise new owners should give credit to their breeders' concern by periodically informing them of their dogs' welfare. Checks for dermoid sinus should be undertaken by at least two competent persons, i.e.: experienced breeders/veterinary surgeons with some knowledge of sinus and its detection. Owners of bitches should ensure that any bitch to be mated to another persons stud dog has had a premated vaginal swab showing her to be free of infection. Should the bitch have an infection then the owner should ensure that appropriate veterinary treatment is in progress. 24 The Western Ridge - May 2013
