Goals for the solution
Support of the EDA process (Electronic Design Automation) by
an integrated data management
Control of the mechatronic product development process with
PDM workflow management capabilities
Customization of the PDM system´s data model with linkage of
all relevant information between the electrical and mechanical
domain
Management of electrical as well as mechanical documents
3D-ECAD Part Library
Mechatronic DMU with a PDM system steered visualization of
the 3D-PCB within the context of the 3D-MCAD assembly

Roles in the EDA process
Project-Manager
Responsible for the overall project.
Defines the mechatronic product structure,
requirements and tasks. Controls results.
Mechanical-Designer
Designs the surrounding geometry in the 3D-CAD
system CATIA V5. Fulfills requirements of the
project manager. Defines requirements for the PCB
development.
Electrical-Designer
Design the schematics of the PCB. Fulfills
requirements of the project manager and designers.
Electrical-Layouter
Designs the layout of the PCB in the ECAD System.
Fulfills requirements of the project manager, ECADDesigners and MCAD-Designers.
Library-Manager
Manages the different libraries of the ECAD- and
MCAD-systems.

Import ECAD data
Create a new mechatronic product in the PDM-System
Link the mechanical documents to the M-Part
Start import of ECAD information from the E-Part
Page 22

Create ME-DMU
Start the ME-DMU from the ME-Part of the mechatronic product
The ME-DMU is dynamically created with the MCAD and ECAD
information stored within the PDM system

Find Electrical Component
Select the electrical component within CATIA V5
Use the provided interface function in order to find the
component in the 3D electrical component library within the PDM
system
Page 24

Update component position
Use the CATIA V5 clash functionality in order to detect an
interference within the loaded mechatronic product structure
Use the provided interface function in order to store the new
position back into the PDM system, e.g. for ECR purposes

Where used function
Use the PDM system´s link management in order to visualize all
E-Parts where a specific library element is used
For example use this information to inform all E-Part owners that
a new version of the library component is available

Visualization of version delta information
Visualize differences between two versions directly in 3D
Color schema (New = green, Deleted = red, Modified = yellow)
Visualize ownership in order to show which parts of the ME-DMU
is owned by which person or role (ECAD, MCAD)

Benefits
Faster mechatronic product development due to a centralized
access of up-to-date information
Higher product quality due to a reduction of errors caused by
developments based on „old“ versions or collisions
Early 3D validation of the mechatronic product design and
therefore cost reduction for error correction
Reduction of redundant development work due to up-to-date
information access
Increasing usage of standard components with a common
application-, location- and project-independent library
Better possibilities for project management and project
controlling due to a centralized multi-discipinary project
database
