The Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas is pleased to present
this Annual Report to you, our dear friends, fund-holders, donors,
and fellow Catholics with a fervent hope that this publication will
hearten and enlighten you. As the Year of Mercy draws to a close,
we remember that Mercy is about relieving the heart of suffering.
Both the Catholic Church and the Catholic Foundation of
Northeast Kansas want to proclaim the Good News, to illuminate
the world, to offer healing in our brokenness; ultimately, to heal our
hearts from spiritual poverty and suffering, and to bring all into
communion with the Love of Jesus Christ and His Divine Mercy.
“Be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful."
- Luke 6:36
Dear Friends,
Archbishop
Joseph F. Naumann
Pope Francis offered us the opportunity to encounter the Mercy of God during
the Jubilee Year of Mercy. His invitation to encounter Mercy remains an
invitation to encounter God and to transform the relationships in our lives.
Did you pray more fervently, make a pilgrimage, forgive someone, perform
the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy? It is my prayer that each of you
reading this Annual Report will continue to grow spiritually, strengthen your
faith, and engage in works of service that bring the Love and Mercy of Jesus
to individuals in your local community.
I am very grateful to the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas Board of
Directors, our donors, past and present, and all those who helped to create
the many funds and endowments for our parishes, schools, and apostolates
of the Archdiocese. It is because of their generosity of time, talent, and
treasure that the Church in northeast Kansas has significant additional
resources to help others draw nearer to God.
I invite you to join me in raising our minds and hearts to the Father, so that
our families, sustained by the grace of Christ, might serve as living witnesses
to God’s enduring Mercy. Thank you for your interest, love, and support for
the Church.
Yours in Jesus, the Lord of Life,
Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann

Two brothers are featured on a mural depicting the history of Shawnee, Ks. displayed
at the Shawnee City Hall. It is fitting that these two men have prominence of place
because of their family’s contributions to this Johnson County community. Together,
along with their wives and large families, they made their mark on the Archdiocese of
Kansas City in Kansas, as well.
Joe Zarda, Sr., and his brothers Frank and Paul, immigrants from Bavaria along with
their parents, Frank and Mary, began their lives in America in the early 1900s by buying
two cows and pasturing their small herd on land that is now the Liberty Memorial in
Kansas City, Mo. When summer nights became too warm, families in the area would
sleep beneath the stars on the breezy hill of Penn Valley Park. When the herd grew
to ten cows, the sleepy families complained, so the herd was moved across town to
Kansas, and the Zarda Dairy began in 1910.
Two of Joe Zarda, Sr.’s nine children, Ben and Tom, who grew up delivering milk
and tending to cattle, became co-owners of the familiar landmark business in the
1970s, which expanded statewide in the 1980s. Throughout their lives the Zarda
family experienced fires and tragedies, and the kindness of other dairy farmers. They
witnessed battlefield compassion and community fun. They welcomed grandchildren
and great-grandchildren and the blessings of God’s boundless love.
As respected business leaders, each brother held significant national, state, and local
positions in civic affairs, in the dairy industry, and in property development.
As Catholics, they never hesitated to help the Church in numerous, impactful ways.
Ben and Betty began the Catholic Charities Golf Tournament more than 35 years
ago. Tom and Mickey planted the seeds for what has become the Catholic Education
Foundation. Their family’s committed leadership extends far beyond their St. Joseph
parish to many worthy Catholic causes.
As the mural depicts, Ben and Betty and
Tom and Mickey witnessed a lifetime of
growth in Shawnee, Ks. Prompted by
God’s grace, they humbly give credit to
Christ’s saving help. The Archdiocese of
Kansas City in Kansas is grateful for their
lifelong service to the Church in northeast
Kansas. The Catholic Foundation of
Northeast Kansas proudly presents the
Zarda family with the 2016 Deo Gratias
Distinguished Family Award.

This organization
serves our families
by providing a
peaceful, beautiful
environment and
assisting individuals
and families in making
important decisions for
the burial of their loved
ones in accord with
Catholic principles.
Catholic Cemeteries of Northeast Kansas
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we believe in the Resurrection. We know that this world is
not all there is. We look forward to our eternal destiny that was given to us through the
waters of Baptism. At the same time, we have a profound respect for the human body. We
reverence the mortal remains of our loved ones as temples that carried the life of Christ.
Catholic Cemeteries helps us care for the bodies of our loved ones with the reverence
that is reflective of what we believe as Catholics.
Catholic Cemeteries provides perpetual care for seven cemeteries in Wyandotte and
Johnson Counties, for Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Topeka, and for Mt. Calvary Cemetery
in Lansing. The Catholic cemetery is a holy place and sacred ground. It is an extension
of the Church dedicated to loving and respectful care of persons who have died and to
comfort for their family members and friends.
This organization serves our families by providing a peaceful, beautiful environment and
assisting individuals and families in making important decisions for the burial of their
loved ones in accord with Catholic principles. They help educate parishioners about
Church teachings on Catholic burials and options available. Burial in Catholic cemeteries
is encouraged for members of our Archdiocesan Church and Catholic Cemeteries also
welcomes family members of other faiths. Another element of their ministry is inviting
people to plan ahead and to make pre-need arrangements for the ease and comfort of
their survivors and to consider becoming members of the Catholic Legacy Society when
planning their wills.
In this way, this ministry rounds out and complements the many other ministries and
services of the Archdiocesan Church. From conception through burial, the Church
ministers as Jesus did—always with tremendous concern about the value of life and deep
respect for the dignity of the human person.
For these reasons, the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas honors Catholic
Cemeteries of Northeast Kansas with the 2016 Deo Gratias Award as an exemplary
Catholic organization and encourages you to contact them now or at your time of need to
experience this ministry in action.

business succession, to special needs trusts and ethics. In the past seven
years more than 100 Catholic professionals have attended the CE Program for
its solid Catholic content, while building a strong and growing community of
local professionals.
The Continuing Education Planning Committee, headed by CFNEK Board
member, Bill Hess, Sacred Heart, Shawnee, thanks all the speakers,
participants, and sponsors who contributed to make this a successful program,

Dear Friends,
As I reflect on all that we have received this past year, what stands out the
most is that Pope Francis called the Church to the Jubilee Year of Mercy to
recognize that “We are able to give mercy to others if we are able to receive
mercy from God.”
The Holy Father said, “The Church is called, above all, to be a credible witness
to mercy…” The primary way that we receive God’s Son into our hearts and to
Lesle M. Knop

share his love with others is through acts of Mercy.
This past year, while we visited Holy Doors, renewed our efforts to live Lent
more intensely, went to Confession, and intentionally practiced the Corporal
and Spiritual Works of Mercy, the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas
prudently managed assets of the Church in order for distributions and grants
to be made throughout our Archdiocese and our region that would serve as a
witness and support evangelization. Everyone involved with the management
of the funds of your parishes, schools and Catholic organizations, and Catholic
family donor advised funds share in the joy that results from this stewardship
during this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
Every year is an exciting time for the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas,
but this year was especially meaningful for me as it marks a decade of service.
I am deeply grateful for the work I have been given to do. My prayers are for
each of you reading this report and that your faith has been reawakened by
entering more deeply into the heart of the Gospel and the experiences of God’s
tender Mercy.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION
Teaching the Faith
How Endowments and Funds Benefit Youth | The 59 funds supporting Catholic education received additions of $2,352,610 and made
distributions of over $454,740. Catholic education continues to be one of the most important but challenging aspects of the Catholic Church.
We are called to share our faith with others and pass it on to the next generation. Catholic education funds support inner-city and rural Catholic
schools, provide scholarship funds that support elementary and high schools, and provide support to Donnelly College, the St. Lawrence
Catholic Campus Center and other campus ministries.

RELIGIOUS VOCATIONS
Religious Vocations
How Religious Vocations Grow With Endowments and Funds | The commitment to vocations at the Archdiocese is helped by seven funds
that provided more than $401,498 in distributions for vocations. Religious Vocations Funds received $338,429 in new deposits. The need
to educate and train clergy is significant and requires continued support from the Archdiocese. This commitment to vocations provides
Catholics access to the Mass, the sacraments and pastoral care. It continues to be a great responsibility for the Church to provide the
needed funding for priestly formation and training, now and into the future.

Beneficiaries of Donor Advised Funds and Scholarships
We are pleased to serve as the partner for many organizations and donor families within the Archdiocese of Kansas
City in Kansas who use donor advised funds and scholarship funds to benefit organizations and ministries serving
our local community. This year CFNEK distributed more than $6.8 million from these funds to further the 10-year
vision set forth by Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann for the Church to practice "Complete Joy: Growing as Disciples
of Jesus, Making Disciples For Jesus."

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
Establish Your Family's Legacy
of Charitable Giving
A Donor Advised Fund
(DAF) is a gift of at least
$5,000 with a not-yetdesignated beneficiary.
Make a difference in our
Catholic community
today and into the future,
while teaching your
family the value
of establishing a
lasting legacy.
Establish your family fund now, then make recommendations for distributions
over time to the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas. The distributions
will be made from the Foundation in the name of your DAF to the qualifying
charities you recommend. The Foundation is your fund administrator. You
may access your DAF reports online to see quarterly statements and make
distribution requests.
Why is a Donor Advised Fund the Right Choice?
--
Financial Benefits: Current tax deduction
--
Pressure-Free Giving: Take your time in deciding which charities you want
to receive your gift.
--
Save Time: Simplify your philanthropy. Make gifts to your fund when you
want, and let the Foundation handle the paperwork.
--
Lower Fees: A DAF can be a low-cost alternative to a family foundation.
The Foundation charges $100 plus one percent of the fund’s balance per
year, assessed quarterly, to administer your fund.
--
Faithfully Invested and Distributed: Socially Responsible Investing (SRI)
screens ensure that your fund will be invested to reflect your Catholic
values. Distributions are reviewed to protect you from unintentionally
supporting charities that disagree with Catholic teaching.
50%
Choose How You Do Good
A Donor Advised Fund gives you the freedom to decide how your gift will do
good. In any calendar year, your fund may make distributions in amounts of
25%
$100 or more that are:
50%
At least 50 percent designated to Catholic organizations, with a minimum of
25 percent of the total funds going to charitable entities within the Archdiocese of
Kansas City in Kansas. Up to 50 percent of the distributions may be designated to
any non-Catholic qualified charity in accordance with Catholic teaching.
Most importantly, a Donor Advised Fund allows you to focus on giving. We do
the work to develop your fund and administer your gifts so your attention may
be devoted to making a difference in the world.
