(Katherine Solis) Christmas messages Daniel, Kathryn talk about ‘Pangako Sa ‘Yo’ trailer DANIEL Padilla said he had goose bumps when he and Kathryn Bernardo were shooting the trailer for the remake of the hit TV series “Pangako Sa ‘ Yo.” In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Padilla said it took him a while before he realized that he and Bernardo are indeed headlining the Kapamilya soap. “Happy lang ako ngayon. Parang kinikilabutan ako nung shinoot namin. ‘Pangako Sa ‘Yo,’ yun na yun mismo. Tapos habang ginagawa na- min, tuluy-tuloy lang yung music ng ‘Pangako Sa ‘Yo.’ Parang oh my God, ito na talaga yun,” he said. Bernardo, for her part, said she is extremely excited to give justice to the role of Yna, which was originally portrayed by Kristine Hermosa. The teaser of the remake shows Bernardo and Padilla recreating a scene from the original where Hermosa and Jericho Rosales run across a field. First aired in 2000, the original “Pangako Sa ‘ Yo” centered on sweethearts Yna and Angelo, who are anguished over the discovery that they might be half-siblings. The top-rating teleserye was also popular for the rivalry of Amor Powers and Claudia Buenavista, respectively portrayed by Eula Valdes and Jean Garcia. This time, Jodi Sta. Maria will play Amor, Yna’s mother, while Angelica Panganiban will take on Claudia, the scheming and ambitious wife of Amor’s former love. Christmas is about giving thanks THE story is told in the Gospel according to St. Luke 17:11-19 about the 10 lepers who were healed by Jesus: “Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, 10 men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’ “When He saw them, He said, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were cleansed. “One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked Him—and he was a Samaritan. “Jesus asked, ‘Were not all 10 cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?’ “Then He said to him, ‘Rise and go; your faith has made you well.’” Ungratefulness is as old as time. We ourselves have often acted like the nine lepers who were healed by Jesus and just went on with their lives. We don’t bother to give thanks. What did Jesus mean when He told the grateful leper that his faith has made him well? One interpretation says Jesus made the man know that he had experienced healing for his body like the other nine, but more importantly, healing for his soul. Healing of our souls is what we all need as we journey through life. And as this biblical story suggests, we can’t have it unless we learn to express gratitude. Perhaps, because of our ingratitude, we do not feel our blessings as we should. Coming at the end of the year, Christmas is a good Lopezlink December 2014- January 2015 time to count our blessings of love, friendship and life itself. It is the time we give thanks for the ultimate blessing of all—the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We have not paused often enough to give thanks to God for the blessings He pours out for us each day of the year. Now is the time to do that and more. Christmas is about remembering the many wonderful people who bless us all the time. This is why I like that ABSCBN station ID released for the Christmas holidays. It focuses on the need to give thanks. If only we took time to give thanks, our joy would be complete. Starting right now, let us thank those who bless us day in and day out. Then say a prayer to thank Our Father in Heaven for sending His only Son on that first Christmas to bring us salvation and eternal life. Thank you and a Merry Christmas to everyone! OSCAR M. LOPEZ Chairman emeritus, Lopez Group Let us stay the course BY God’s grace, 2014 has turned out to be a year of recovery. After the super typhoon struck the Visayas islands last year, we have seen our fellow Filipinos, and indeed the entire world, unite to aid the victims in their darkest hour. Relief and rehabilitation efforts continue to be challenged by the gravity of the devastation, and by the dispersed nature of the communities affected. It has been impossible to reach everybody quickly enough, but for those whom we have reached—whether through the distribution of food packs, hygiene kits and ABS-CBNmobile SIM cards; the building of schools; the funding of boats for displaced fishermen; or the mounting of TV view- ing stations when there was yet no electricity—we ensured that we not only shared material things, but also compassion, understanding, faith and a true helping hand. With tragedy (political conflict, war, illness) besetting other parts of the world, we are called upon to stand in solidarity with the rest of humanity, the very same ones who reached out to us and our kababayan in our time of need. Let us take every precaution and participate in active discussions that promote peace, freedom, global health and the dignity of man. For the Lopez Group, we have begun to reap the benefits of prudent investments made in the last three to four years. We continue to be in investment mode, as we see even more opportunities in a steadily growing Philippine economy. I wish to thank all of our Lopez Group kapamilya for the perseverance that made recovery possible, both for our group of companies, and for our fellow Filipinos who continue to struggle for a better life. In 2015, let us stay the course and remain supportive of rehabilitation efforts, whether initiated by government or by the private sector. Let us maintain the mind-set of building better, for a better Philippines. In behalf of my wife Maritess, our children and grandchildren, I wish you all a blessed Christmas and a prosperous new year. AMB. MANUEL M. LOPEZ Chairman, Lopez Group Find time to feed your soul MGA kapamilya, Christmas is upon us, and there is never enough time for all the reunions, get-togethers and parties that we are expected to attend. Don’t let the stress get to you. Make sure you find time to rest, relax and just hang out with people you love. We have worked very hard all year, and it is time to reward ourselves with some serious “me time.” This personal time may include visits to your favorite orphanage, to the burial places of your departed relatives, to the sick confined in cancer wards, to religious shrines, to art galleries or parks, or simply being alone in your bedroom. Whatever it is you choose to do this season of cheer, it must be something that feeds your soul. It must make you feel alive. It must make you want to be alive for a long, long time still. Let us meet the New Year with passion, focused on achieving our full potential as individuals, and aware of how best we contribute to a better world. Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon sa lahat. PRESENTACION L. PSINAKIS Chair, Lopez Inc. We can be grateful in everything IN order to grow, we must go out of our comfort zone. We may experience disappointments and failures. But not total defeat. That’s because there is always something to gain from every experience. Maybe we learn a valuable lesson, or stumble upon a better idea, or meet people who will make a difference in our lives. Indeed, we can be grateful in everything. And if we have a thankful heart no matter what, fear cannot get in the way of our success. In this season of counting our blessings, we can remember the so many people we have worked with, the many tasks we had to do over the years, the moments of trials and triumphs. Some of them we re- member with fondness, some with pain. But there’s no experience that we will regret for all of them have helped make us become better persons. And all the lessons learned help make our companies become the best that they can be. EUGENIO LOPEZ III Chairman, ABS-CBN Corporation ‘Good’ keeps us moving forward together THE year 2014 has been a good year for our group of companies. This has not been due to the lack of challenges but precisely because our teams, across companies working with group synergy, overcame so many execution challenges. Last Christmas, we were all still reeling from the effects of super typhoon Yolanda, and our main challenge then was to address many urgent needs while looking after the welfare of our kapamilya in the Lopez Group and in the Yolanda-stricken areas. This year, we lost no time getting ourselves back on track and in pushing to move forward as an organization. We committed to efficiently restoring EDC’s operations in Leyte, and we were able to get all our power plants back online several months ahead of schedule. Even our Bacman plants, which have been under rehabilitation since 2010, finally went back online this year. Equally significant is that we’re fulfilling our mission of providing our country with clean and renewable energy as we broke ground on the 414-MW San Gabriel and 97-MW Avion natural gasfired plants early this year, and we successfully commissioned Southeast Asia’s largest wind farm, the 150-MW Burgos Wind Project, in November. Even our other FPH subsidiaries—First Balfour, ThermaPrime, Rockwell Land, FPIP and First Philec—are well on track in meeting their annual revenue and income targets and we expect them to end the year on historic highs. We may have faced setbacks in 2013, but those didn’t stop us from forging ahead with confidence and hope in 2014. We also came together as a group with a clear purpose to tell our story. In June, we launched our “Powered by Good” branding campaign, which was shown not only here in the Philippines but also to a global audience. After having articulated the seven Lopez Values, which are deeply embedded in our DNA, I feel that this articulation of being “Powered by Good” is something that resonates with all of us. For, indeed, it is good that wakes us up each morning to face the day; it is good that keeps all of us dedicated to our mission; it is good that keeps us moving forward together despite the obstacles and challenges. Recognizing the good that lies in all of us, we also came together as a group to honor the men and women who sacrificed so much in order to ease the burden of tragedy on our fellowmen. This year, aside from the annual Lopez Achievement Awards (LAA), we gave out special awards for our Yolanda Heroes. I’m sure those of you who witnessed these stories could not help but be inspired by what emerged from one of the most horrifying disasters ever to have hit our shores. We also chronicled and captured the bayanihan spirit that flowed through the Lopez Group through “Yolanda,” a book that was born from letters written by EDC president Ricky Tantoco and from the shared experiences of our kapamilya in EDC and other FPH and Lopez Group comTurn to page 8 Lopezlink December 2014-January 2015 Lopezlink December 2014-January 2015 By Carla Paras-Sison Lisa Gomez: Young but not restless 5 reasons to celebrate #ChristmasAtRockwell ROCKWELL gives you five reasons to spend a meaningful holiday celebration at Power Plant Mall: 1. The Retail Operations and Design teams had spruced up the mall in festive amber and red, with hundreds of garlands and twinkling fairy lights festooning the posts and hallways. Planning the overall look of the mall for Christmas 2014 actually involved the whole Retail team, which contributed their own ideas for the theme, notes Gomez. This year, one lucky shopper will get to drive home the very first BMW X4 xDrive20d in the Philippines. “That’s another thing that our shoppers are very excited about. They say they do their Christmas shopping in Power Plant Mall because they look forward to our raffle,” Gomez shares. The mall’s Christmas calendar will be boosted by the PLANT magazine Holiday Issue, which will share the ABCs of organizing memorable parties, as well as one-of-akind gift suggestions, and the holiday edition of Rockwell’s Secret Menu, where guests can feast on select offerings from the kitchens of Rockwell Center restaurants. Moving forward In the last three years, more than five new major malls have opened, while old malls have carried out their mall expansion. Thus, “more malls, more choices” just about sums up the 14-year-old mall’s current challenges. Power Plant Mall is one of only three major malls in the metro with less than 100,000 square meters of retail space. For Gomez, their current size of 41,000 square meters definitely has its upside, chief of which is the intimacy and easy access from one store to another that it affords clients. Still, habitués will appreciate that not only are expansion plans moving forward and will be completed in about three years, but also that the team is in talks to boost its tenancy mix with brands that will be a perfect fit for the new setup. “There are admittedly a lot of choices out there now in terms of dining, fashion and lifestyle, and we can’t stop our market from trying to visit other malls because of this. This is why we’re very excited to offer them more choices when we roll out our mall expansion plans,” Gomez says. Of course, being the assiduous learners and preparers that they are, the Power Plant teams involved are rolling up their sleeves and equipping themselves for the big change. The best for the market “The whole Retail team— Operations, Leasing, Marketing, Design—and even the Cinema team, is studying and continuously having workshops. We’re working together so that the mall expansion is the best for the core market that we want to serve,” Gomez stresses. Power Plant Mall has been quick to pick up lessons from the experience of other establishments with regard to their own expansions, such as ensuring that operations can continue unimpeded, shoppers are not in any way distracted or inconvenienced, and parking remains hassle-free. Or even minimizing the gap, appearance- and atmosphere-wise, between the old wing and the new one, which tends to put off shoppers. “When we do it, we’ll really do it right. And we’ll make sure that our clients will still come back when the mall expansion is finished,” Gomez promises. But in the here and now, Power Plant Mall shoppers will not lack for the novel and the current. This year alone, the mall welcomed new tenants Repetto, Y-3 Common Thread, Rags2Riches, Ronnie & Joe, and Uniqlo, as well as home furnishing stores Purple Orchid and Grassroots. On the F&B side, 8 Cuts, CDP Table, Vom Fass and Yabu were among those that were added to the mix. What’s more, the mall’s evergreen anchor store, Zara, emerges from a refresh in time for the expected influx of Christmas shoppers. Wi-Fi ready And there’s its venture into the e-commerce realm, putting a virtual Power Plant Mall within reach of netizens. Its online shopping business via the www.powerplantmall. com website currently serves Rockwell Center and will eventually expand to other areas in Metro Manila and the provinces. Aside from being able to handle cinema ticket purchases online, the mall is now 100% Wi-Fi ready, Gomez shares. Despite its imposing image, the Power Plant Mall formula is quite straightforward: content + experience. “We have the right content that our market wants, and the experience is one of the major things we focus on; this begins once you enter the mall, in the parking area, until you go on the escalators, when you speak to our front liners, and all the other touch points of the mall. “It’s the overall experience that we give utmost importance to. At the end of the day, we can have the right content, but if the shoppers don’t like their experience, they get turned off. You want to be in a mall that you’re comfortable in and you get the distinct experience you want,” Gomez says. LISA Gomez, leasing manager of Power Plant Mall, was hired first in 2008 as a marketing associate of Rockwell Land Corporation. It was her first job. Later that year, she moved to Retail, and her life has never been the same. A mass communication graduate who once dreamed of becoming a newscaster, Gomez found much use for her communication skills both in marketing where she started, and then in leasing where she is now. “I found that everything I’ve done is connected. I’ve learned from all the different experiences and am able contribute to the rest of the team,” she says. As leasing manager, Gomez focuses on bringing in new brands sought by Rockwell’s core market: residents of Rockwell Center and surrounding villages. She monitors the performance of tenants, ensures that their objectives are consistent with Rockwell’s objectives and does what she can to help them meet mutually agreed upon targets. Rockwell formula With competition wising up to the Rockwell formula of “content Toy drive to benef it White Cross + experience,” an expansion binge hit shopping centers in the metro, and Power Plant Mall is set to grow its own space in the next three years. “There are just a lot of choices in dining, fashion and lifestyle, and we really need more space to accommodate what our customers want. But we can assure our customers that our expansion will not be disruptive and they can continue to enjoy the ambience they desire even as we work to give them more shops and restaurants,” Gomez says. She says integrity is the most important value that has guided her personal life as well as her career. “I believe integrity covers all the values. When dealing with people, with challenges and situations, it is so important to show integrity. It shows the character you have.” Like any career woman, Gomez would like to keep learning the different parts of Retail and of Rockwell Land. “I am passionate about what I do because I believe in the brand. This helps me in my work because I deal with dif- ferent people, both internally and third parties like tenants. It’s easy for me to make them believe in the brand because I myself believe in it. I love what I do and I’m happy to be part of the Rockwell family that has made me learn on my own, and also guided me throughout.” Second home She says the team treats Power Plant Mall like a second home. When faced with any situation, they would ask themselves what they would do if such a thing happened in their own home. This is why the mall has to be tops in cleanliness because they all want their home to be clean. Gomez invites LopezLink readers to visit the mall this December. “Every year, we’re excited to share our Christmas events with our kapamilya in the Lopez Group. We have a lot in store for you. It’s always a very exciting time for us.” She considers herself “very fortunate” to be part of Rockwell Land and of the Lopez Group. “When you hear you are part of both Rockwell Land and the Lopez Group, there is not only prestige but real pride in being part of that whole. For people my age trying to reach life goals or trying to find a career path, love what you do. Be passionate about your work. This way it will not be a burden to you. I am very lucky to have found a job that makes me happy and content.” Santa’s making a list… KIDS, want to be included on a oneof-a-kind list this Christmas? Just collect your pre-loved toys and bring them over to Power Plant Mall’s North Court right beside Santa’s Wishing Station. The children living in White Cross in San Juan will gladly look after and take care of your old playmates and other stuff. When you donate your toys, your name and photo will be included on Santa’s Good List and displayed on plasma screens around Power Plant Mall. So get a move on, round up the toys you want to give away and see you at the mall! Purita KalawLedesma and the struggles of the PH art community ARTICLES of Disagreements zeroes in on the struggles and triumphs of the Philippine art community then and now. An important figure in the system that makes the local art scene what it is is the patron. More than a buyer of what the artist creates, a patron shows support in a variety of ways. Purita Kalaw-Ledesma is an important figure in Philippine art history whose unwavering support during the dawn of the modern art movement in the country paved the way for the establishment of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) in 1948. Through the AAP, artists, writers and other creatives got together and started to collaborate on exhibitions, publications and other projects. Ledesma was herself also a painter and a writer. Arguably among her most notable contributions to Philippine art is her initiative to document it. One anecdote that her children tell is about their mother carefully cutting out newspaper columns about artists, their works and exhibitions, and important milestones of the art scene. One of these scrapbooks (out of approximately 87) is a key feature in the Articles of Disagreements exhibition along with several portraits of the patron rendered by artists such as Jaime de Guzman, Onib Olmedo, Anita MagsaysayHo and Victorio Edades. These artworks are testaments to her contribution to and influence in the arts. The recent reemergence of the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for Art Criticism hopes to reignite the passion of young critics and writers to do scholarly work—not only by documenting but also by critically engaging and conversing with the works of contemporary artists today. We get caught up in the chaos of the Christmas season, but these simple tips can help you keep your eyes healthy during the holidays. Keep your eyes hydrated. Long travels by car or plane make your eyes more vulnerable to dryness, especially if you wear contact lenses. Cars and planes have low humidity, causing your tears to evaporate faster and preventing your tear glands from producing enough tears. Aside from drinking lots of water, bring a bottle of artificial tears to help keep your eyes moist. Ask your eye doctor for the most appropriate artificial tears for you. Protect your eyes from the sun. Whenever you head outside, ensure that you are wearing sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays has been linked to development of eye problems like cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygium that can cause temporary or permanent vision loss. Remove eye makeup. Christmas parties involve getting dolled up for an evening with friends or family. Just don’t forget to wash eye makeup off afterwards! With the help of a mild makeup remover and cleanser, use gentle strokes to remove eye makeup to avoid eye irritation or infections. Wear eye protection. Wear protective glasses or goggles when watching a fireworks display up close or while lighting firecrackers. Keep away from where fireworks are being launched; if your eyes are irritated by the smoke, wash them with clean water and stay indoors. If your eyes are injured by fireworks, rush to the nearest eye clinic or hospital. According to Asian Eye Institute’s cornea and refractive/ LASIK surgeon Dr. Emerson Cruz, undergoing a comprehensive eye exam is encouraged to make sure one’s eyes are healthy. “A lot of people wait for an eye emergency to happen before having their eyes checked. Pay your eye doctor a visit before the holiday break. You will find out how your eyes are doing, and if an eye problem is detected, we can give immediate treatment,” he says. Asian Eye Institute offers comprehensive eye exams that can help detect various eye conditions. WE’RE all about Christmas in our last issue for 2014. If there’s one establishment in the metro that has earned raves for its Christmas décor over the years, it has to be Power Plant Mall. While those who came of age in the 1980s or 1990s remember their Cubao or Greenhills Christmases, younger generations have their own fond memories of the Rockwell Center mall’s quietly elegant yuletide styling. In this issue, leasing manager Lisa Gomez unwraps for us a bigger and more exciting Power Plant Mall: new and updated stores plus thoughtful extras for patrons’ convenience, and the muchawaited expansion that the team is already preparing for even as we speak. Gomez also promises that no barricades will be seen in the mall during the holiday season; that is, all spaces that have been boarded up for renovation or prepared for new tenants are 100% ready to welcome shoppers. This, of course, is in addition to the new establishments opening elsewhere within Rockwell Center, such as Dean & DeLuca at the Edades Tower. During this span of anticipation for the coming of Christ, a typical Christmas season for Filipinos is characterized by an influx of shopping, Christmas décor hanging on every establishment, as well as loads of merrymaking. In short, the Christmas “air” in this archipelago has always been astounding! With such a diverse culture due to its numerous islands, each region in the country has its own identity regarding the cuisine they present with pride, and what would be more exciting during the holiday season than to dine in the culinary capital of the Philippines—palatable Pampanga! Everyone can enjoy a holiday food trip to this province since it can be successfully done in a day. What a gastronomical day it would be! For a day trip, one would start by traveling to Angeles City to enjoy a unique breakfast at Historic Camalig Restaurant, which prides itself on its Armando’s Pizza (“Ang Pambansang Pizza”) since 1973. Do drop by at the Museo Ning Angeles near the area and indulge in pasalubong shopping at Susie’s Cuisine and at Rosing’s Candy Store. As lunchtime beckons, hop over to the next town of Bacolor to experience authentic Kapampangan cuisine in a farm setting at Apag Marangle. The famous half-buried San Guillermo Parish Church is just a few minutes away. Capping off your journey would be a visit to San Fernando, the Christmas capital of the Philippines, as you savor more regional classics at Everybody’s Cafe for dinner. A popular pasalubong outlet nearby would be the Nathaniel’s Bakeshop. Also, check out the old San Fernando train station and shop for authentic factorypriced Pampanga lanterns at RolRen’s Lanterns. Eating during this time of the year brings so much excitement to a Filipino stomach, especially if it’s done in Pampanga!
