What We Offer
Du ration / Degree
Questions concerning deviance & social norms, crime & po
litics, the governance of security & the safeguarding of hu
man rights are pressing issues of our times at the interface
of social, legal, domestic, and foreign policy as well as those
between education, social work, and public policy.
The Master‘s Degree Programme in International Criminology
(M.A.) at the University of Hamburg offers the opportunity to
study criminology as an independent, socioscientific subject; the
programme is the first one of its kind in Germany to date. The con
secutive M.A. programme comprises 120 credits and is a full-time
course of study. Approximately 30 students are accepted into the
programme each year.
The programme is a 4-semester, full-time course of study (with
an option for part-time studies).
Cou rse Pro gramme
•Completed university or college degree in Sociology, Psycholo
gy, Education, Human Medicine, Law, or another subject rela
ted to the study of criminology, at least at the B.A. or applied
science degree level.
The Master‘s Degree Programme in International Criminolo
gy teaches students the subject-specific theoretical and
methodological skills needed for a profession in the field of
criminology, particularly in research and teaching, and for at
taining executive, management and planning positions in all
areas related to criminology.
The programme has a modular course structure, and focuses on
four thematic areas: „Basic Principles of Punishment“, „Policing“,
„International Criminal and Security Policy“, and „Cultural and
Visual Criminology“, with several courses on each subject offered
every semester. In addition to the basic principles (e.g. history of
criminology, introduction to criminology, theories of criminolo
gy), the programme also covers research skills (quantitative and
qualitative methods of empirical social research) and in-depth
interdisciplinary knowledge (basic principles of criminal law, so
ciological perspectives, forensics, conflict resolution). It also inclu
des courses and modules that specifically address current social
developments and serve as a basis for empirical and theoretical
analyses of selected topics in the field of criminology.
Degree: Master of Arts (M.A.) with the option to subsequently
enter a doctorate programme.
