Dear All,
Another successful year of EEB4 has come to an end. This has been our last year on this beautiful site in Berkendael, which holds so many memories for the whole school community.
It has been an emotional end of year, not only saying goodbye to our site but saying farewell to many families and
pupils as well as colleagues who have all played a crucial part in our ever-growing community.
Amongst others, one of our “old” teachers leaving is our cherished Finbarr HURLEY (EN) who has spent the last
ten years of his life devoting himself to the European School system. We had the pleasure of having Mr HURLEY
in our school for the past four years and his investment and bright energy in the school will be sorely missed.

From our nursery assistants we say goodbye to Magaly GENOT (FR), Victoria
CLARK (EN), Anne PERTUISOT (FR), Stéphanie LEJEUNE (FR) et Alexandra KONECNA (NE).

We wish all of these teachers and assistants all the very best in their new horizons.
Despite all these goodbyes, we are also looking forward to a new beginning full of adventures and challenges in
our new school in Laeken.
Many thanks to you all for your united cooperation and support; as a team, we have all managed to create a very
successful first five years of EEB4 in Berkendael…now the challenge continues at Laeken and may it be just as
successful!

Une nouvelle année réussie de EEB4 touche à sa fin. Cette année scolaire sera donc la dernière passée sur le
magnifique site de Berkendael, qui restera marqué de tant de beaux souvenirs au sein de toute la communauté
scolaire.
C‟était une fin d‟année pleine d‟émotion, car nous ne disons pas seulement au revoir à notre site, mais nous disons aussi adieu à de nombreuses familles et des élèves ainsi que des collègues qui ont tous joué un rôle important dans la vie de notre école en plein développement.
D‟une part, nous avons une pensée spéciale pour un de nos «anciens» enseignants qui nous quitte : notre cher
Finbarr HURLEY (EN) qui s‟est dévoué aux école européennes pendant 10 ans. Nous avons eu l‟honneur de l‟accueillir pendant 4 ans; son investissement à l‟école et son énergie lumineuse vont beaucoup nous manquer.
Les autres enseignants qui nous quittent sont Laurence DUCLOS (FR), Elisabeth BALLUFF (DE), Wivine
D'HONDT (FR), Verena BIESOLD (DE), Barbara KROL (FR), James MARSDEN (EN), Valentina BIARESE (IT),

Nous leur souhaitons à tous plein succès dans tous leurs projets futurs.
Malgré les au revoirs, nous sommes tout de même très impatients de prendre un nouveau départ plein d'aventures et de défis à le nouvelle école à Laeken.
Un grand merci à vous tous pour votre coopération et votre soutien constant. En tant qu‟équipe, nous avons tous
réussi à faire des cinq premières années de EEB4 à Berkendael un beau succès commun... maintenant le défi
continue à Laeken…en espérant que tout soit aussi réussi!

B-IV News
Depuis le mois d‟avril, un groupe de travail a été créé afin d‟élaborer
un journal scolaire. C‟est ainsi qu‟est naît « B - IV News ».
Ce groupe de travail est composé d‟élèves de P5 issus des 5 sections
de l‟école ainsi que des représentants du conseil des élèves.
Le premier numéro est sorti au mois de mai. On peut y trouver une
interview de Monsieur le Directeur, un reportage sur l‟accident de
Sierre, des critiques de livres, des jeux …
La première édition pourra bientôt être consultée sur le site internet de
l‟école.

European School’s e-Learning
competition!
Well done, Alexander and Jacob - P5 DE!
The fifth edition of the European Schools eLearning Awards took place
recently. The aim of these awards was to recognise and reward
innovative uses of Information and Communication Technology in
Education (ICTE) whilst showcasing pupils‟ creativeness. This year it
was won by two boys in P5 DE!
Primary Pupils Category:
1st prize: Alexander Morass (EEB IV, P5 DE)
presented a
Power Point Presentation “Airplanes”
AND
Jacob Metzler (EEB IV, P5 DE) with his Power Point
Presentation “FC Barcelona”
Alexander has a keen interest in avation and Jacob is a fanatic football
supporter! Both children won and iPod Touch for succesful participation.
The jury appreciated the use of new technologies within the school
activities, linked to the Discovery of the World curriculum. The implication
of all the pupils through the complementary quiz was highly appreciated
as well. These nice Power Point presentations developed oral
expression, oral comprehension, reading and writing skills in children. At
the same time children learned to look for information on the internet and
improve their ability to speak in public. From a pedagogical point of view,
allowing children to talk about their hobbies increases their motivation
and guarantees a positive impact on their learning process. The Jury
were clearly impressed!

Book Week
Our school celebrated its first „Book Week‟ to great success last week.
The aim of the week was to expose the children to the joys of reading
while at the same time producing some work as individuals and classes
that they could share with children from other sections.
The week got off to a great start on Monday when the children (and some
of the teachers also!) came to school dressed as their favourite book
character. There were great discussions in classes about who they were
and why they liked this character. Then, at 11 o clock, the Pied Piper
gathered all the children in the Primary School in the playground where
they paraded around and completed the event with a Mexican Wave. It
was GREAT fun!
For the remainder of the week, the children were busy with their books in
anticipation for Friday when they had the opportunity to share their books
with children from other classes both at their year level as well as other
year groups.
In the library, the most popular books to date this school year were on
display and Teresa had a little quiz for every year group with the prize being a diploma of participation for the class!
All in all, it was a great week, where books and literature took centre
stage. The children really enjoyed the process of book making and sharing books and hopefully, this enjoyment shall grow into a lifelong love of
reading.
Boekenweek
Tijdens de werkten we vooral met de boeken van Stefan Boonen. Het is
een Belgische schrijver die bij ons op bezoek kwam. Hij vertelde ons dat
hij alles wat hij schrijft uitprobeert. Iedereen, van de kleuters tot S1, was
geboeid door zijn verhalen.
Met de hele sectie werkten we rond het thema “sprookjes”. We voerden
een toneelstuk op. Tijdens de eindejaarspresentatie zullen we het
opnieuw opvoeren voor de ouders.
Europe Day, May 9th
Every year on May 9th, we come together as a school to celebrate
Europe Day. This year there were various activities organised in all the
year groups around the theme of celebrating Europe. In P2 this year we
decided to celebrate together with the P2 children in the other language
sections. The children had many wonderful ideas about how to celebrate
from flag making, to holding a funfair on the grounds of the school –
eventually we settled on something in between: a large buffet offering the
best in European food shared among friends.
All of the children met in Mr Daniel's very large classroom to begin the
feast. What fun we had! The children brought in regional and local
specialities from their home countries and shared lots of grannies
recipes! It was fun to taste each other‟s dishes – and great to see how
adventurous the children were in trying new dishes. Lots of interesting
conversations followed with the children asking how the food was
prepared, what occasion it was eaten for and even if you can have cake
for breakfast in some countries!
Massembre
Les enfants de la classe P4 sont allés à Massembre le 25 Avril pour deux
nuits. Ils y ont appris énormément sur la forêt. Toute la classe est partie en
promenade dans la forêt et les enfants ont appris à reconnaître les
nombreux oiseaux, animaux et arbres qui y vivent. Ils ont pris part à une
chasse au trésor qui les a conduits à travers les bois, afin de résoudre des
énigmes et collecter des objets de la forêt.
Les enfants se sont amusés à fabriquer des instruments de musique à partir
de bois creux. Ils ont fouillé le sol pour trouver des fossiles, et ont cherché
des insectes dans la rivière. Les soirées étaient très amusantes et pleines
d‟activités.
Les enfants ont pu jouer dans le magnifique terrain de jeu à Massembre. Ils
sont revenus le vendredi le 27 Avril, fatigués mais heureux après un
magnifique voyage.

Europatag!
Rund um den Europatag am 9. Mai 2012 haben die Schülerinnen und
Schüler der Maternelle De verschiedenste europäische Flaggen gebastelt. Einige Kinder sind mit Wasserfarben zu Werke gegangen, während
andere Buntstifte oder Wachsmaler bevorzugt haben. Besondere
Herausforderungen waren die kroatische und portugiesische Fahne,
welche detailgetreu gezeichnet wurden. Zur genauen Darstellung
mussten die Flaggen der Länder natürlich zuerst im Internet gesucht
und gefunden werden. Manche Kinder hatten an den schwierigen Mustern und kleinen Details besonders viel Spaß. Die Flagge Wales mit
dem roten Drachen hat sich ebenso großer Beliebtheit erfreut, besonders bei den Jungen.
Keine Fahne ist jedoch ohne Fahnenmast komplett und dazu eigneten
sich Schaschlickspieße oder Papierrollen wunderbar. So kann man die
Fahne schließlich auch am besten schwenken und das Land feiern.
Am Europatag waren die Kinder in einer französischsprachen Klasse
und haben dort belgische Fahnen gebastelt. Außerdem kamen sie in
den Genuss von echten belgischen Waffeln mit Schokoladensoße.
Hmmm, so schmeckt Belgien besonders gut! Im Austausch haben die
französischsprachigen Kinder österreichische und deutsche Fahnen gemalt. Anschließend haben sie Brötchen mit Würstchen gekostet.
Zum guten Schluss wurden wir von Claudias Klasse zum britischen
Frühstück eingeladen und sind in den Genuss von walisischen Küchlein,
Schoko-Reis-Talern und vielen anderen süßen Sachen gekommen.
Kleine Bratwürstchen haben natürlich auch nicht gefehlt.
Zum Abschluss unserer Reise durch Europa haben wir noch weitere europäische und verschiedene Länderflaggen gemalt, denn es herrschte
ein wahres „Flaggen-Fieber“.
Als wir die griechische Sage von der Entführung Europas durch Zeus in
Stiergestalt auf CD angehört haben, wussten die Kinder gleich, dass es
davon ein Bild auf unserer großen Europakarte in der Klasse gibt.
Die Kinder hatten viel Spaß die verschiedenen Facetten Europas kennenzulernen und dank des Flaggeneifers kenne ich jetzt auch die
Flagge der Aaland Inseln.
Ausflug ins Kunstmuseum
Lisa Peters und Jakob Schmitz der Klasse 4DE berichten über den
Ausflug ins Kunstmuseum Beaux Art in Brüssel.
Die Kinder der deutschsprachigen Abteilung der Grundschule fuhren am
24.5.2012 ins Kunstmuseum Beaux Art in Brüssel. Wir wurden in Gruppen aufgeteilt und haben uns Bilder angesehen, die viel Geschichte,
Geschichten und Sagen zeigten. Darüber hinaus hatten es manche Bilder wirklich in sich, z. B. ein Bildnis von Apollon, wie er einem Satyr die
Haut abzog! Das Museum selbst sieht aus wie ein Palast eines Königs.
Große Säulenhallen, edle Marmortreppen und prächtige Statuen gab es
zu sehen. Sehr, sehr interessant!
Une surprise pour leurs parents
Les élèves de la maternelle italienne ont preparé avec leur enseignante
une surprise pour leurs parents le jour de la fete du 23 juin.
Donc, comme c'est une surprise...on peut seulement chatouiller votre
curiosité en disant qu'il s'agit d'une carte de l'Europe,celle que vous
voyez dans la photo, tout à fait particulière : une carte accrochée au mur,
à hauteur d'enfant, de laquelle sortent comme par enchantement des
personnages de l'Histoire, des personnages mythologiques, fantastiques,qui parlent avec les enfants, leur content un tas de choses, leur
montrent des monuments, des lacs, des fleuves,et les enfants transforment toutes ces connaissances à travers leur fantasie...halte, il ne
faut plus dire!

Wunder Natur: Von der Raupe zum Schmetterling
Ein bisschen Geduld mussten wir schon haben, bis die Raupen endlich
eingetroffen waren. Immerhin mussten sie den langen Weg aus
Süddeutschland nach Brüssel unbeschadet überstehen. Während wir
noch um ihr Wohlergehen zitterten, haben sich einige von ihnen bereits
in aller Seelenruhe auf dem Postweg im Karton verpuppt.
Aber fangen wir lieber bei der Ankunft im Klassenzimmer an. Die Aufregung war groß als wir fünf mittelgroße Raupen in einem mit Nahrung
ausgestatteten Becher geschickt bekamen. In dem Paket befand sich
außerdem ein würfelförmiges Netz, eine Pflegeanleitung für die Raupen,
eine Pinzette, eine Facettenlupe, eine Bestimmungstafel für Schmetterlinge und ein Tütchen mit Zucker. Und nun?
Erst einmal staunen die Kinder etwas verhalten über die haarigen
Raupen. (Süß sind sie nicht gerade.) Sie fühlen sich aber offensichtlich
in dem Plastikbecher, dessen Deckel mit Luftlöchern versehen ist, und
der außerdem eine braune Nahrungsmasse beinhaltet, wohl. Zuerst
wundern wir uns über die „Spinnenweben“, in denen sich ein paar
Raupen verfangen zu haben scheinen. Bald stellen verschiedene Kinder
fest, dass die Raupen sich aus dem Faden einen Kokon spinnen und
sich damit am Deckel des Bechers aufhängen.
Mit wissenschaftlicher Genauigkeit fertigen Clara, Raphael, Nikolaus, Esther und Ida an aufeinander folgenden Tagen Skizzen der verpuppten
Raupen und messen die Kokons. Dies muss alles ganz vorsichtig geschehen, denn wir haben in dem beiliegenden Heftchen gelesen, dass die
Tiere in diesem Stadium sehr empfindlich sind. Perl und Remi als
Raupenaufseher achten besonders darauf, dass der Becher nur wenn
unbedingt nötig und dann mit ganz viel Fingerspitzengefühl bewegt wird
und sich ihre Klassenkameraden in der Nähe der Raupen ruhig und
langsam bewegen.
Als alle Raupen komplett verpuppt sind, siedeln Levke, Maja und
Kathinka sie mithilfe der Pinzetten aus dem Becher in den großen, mit
einem Netz und Folie bespannten Würfel um. Die Kinder beobachten,
wie sich die Kokons verfärben und bald schimmert schon ein Muster
durch die dünne Hülle. Ein paar Tage später krabbeln die ersten
Schmetterlinge aus ihren Kokons. Fasziniert betrachten wir wie sie still
dasitzen sich dehnen und „ihre Muskeln trainieren“. Sie rollen ihren
Saugrüssel ein und aus und zeigen ihre schönen Flügel.
Remi und Perl mischen Zuckerwasser und stellen es den Falter als
Nahrung vorsichtig in den Käfig. Bald müssen wir die schönen Tiere, die
wir schon lieb gewonnen haben, in die Natur entlassen. Wir sind alle ein
bisschen traurig, freuen uns aber für die Schmetterlinge, für die nun ein
neues Leben beginnt. Auch wenn die Schmetterlinge mit ihren dünnen
Flügeln empfindlich erscheinen, so beruhigt uns Raphael, dass wir keine
Angst um sie haben müssen. Er erklärt, dass auf den Flügeln Kreise
sind, die wie Augen von einem großen Tier aussehen, vor dem sich Vogel mit Appetit auf Schmetterling fürchten. Wunder(bare) Natur.
P3 Work Together
The month of May provided not one, not two, but three opportunities
for the children of P3 to enjoy learning together.
All of the children in P3 spent their Book Week immersing themselves
in the legends of the world. By the end of the week each child had
written their very own legend. The children created a display of their
books in the P3 corridor and the children enjoyed browsing the books
written by their friends across the section. The children left notes of
praise and admiration on each others books. It was a joy to observe
children engrossed in books written and made by their peers.
The flea market saw some extraordinary cross section team work. The
children all worked very hard together to raise money for our school
charity. The children bought and sold to each other, not only practicing
their mathematical skills but their communication skills too. Teachers
observed some very astute business behaviour, perhaps we have a
young apprentice for Alan Sugar in the making!
Science Week took place in the last week of May. The highlight of the
week was our experiment day. Each class created a scientific
investigation that was placed in the P3 corridor. Classes in P3 took it
in turn to visit the investigation stations while two representatives from
each class explained and assisted with their class‟ station. The
excitement was palpable in the corridor with whoops of amazement
and excitement echoing through it. The highlights were certainly Mr
Marsden and P3ENb‟s cups and wet strings that made the sound of
quacking duck and M Degeytar and P3FR‟s amazing demonstration of
how, using an upturned glass, a piece of kitchen towel can stay try
while submerged in a bucket of water. Children were even overheard
attempting to explain friction and vibration in their L2!
Flea Market
Our annual flea market has proved to be a great success over the past two
years; pupils learn how to explore and develop a more thorough concept
and value of money, which is a topic at every level of our mathematics curriculum.
Therefore, we decided to continue our annual flea market project where
children were able to buy and sell toys, craft or cakes.
The children brought in toys, games, books or things that they had made
(including biscuits and cakes) to sell to other children in the school. The
items had to fit into a shoe box and had to be things the children did not
play with anymore, but other which children might enjoy.
The children were able to buy items from other children across the language sections. The real life maths activity of counting, estimating and paying for items and then receiving change, then led into data processing/ handling.
The money raised went to the School Project that we have been supporting
in Uganda. Therefore we were delighted when the children used their precious pocket money to buy the items on this fun day, knowing that the proceeds would go to a worthy cause!
Laeken
Die 4. Klassen der EEB4 waren am 19. Juni 2012 in Laeken.
In Laken wird unsere zukünftige Schule sein. Als erstes gingen wir auf
einen kleinen Hügel, der sich gleich neben der Schule befindet, von wo aus
wir die Schule und das ganze Schulgelände betrachten konnten. Danach
sind wir zu einer Wiese spaziert, auf der es sogar kleine Kaninchen gab.
Dort haben wir dann Bleistiftzeichnungen von verschiedenen Parkmotiven
angefertigt: z. B. Grashalmen, Blumen, Büschen, Bäumen oder Laternen.
Nach ungefähr 45 Minuten haben wir uns auf noch einer größeren Wiese
mit den 4. Klassen der anderen Nationen versammelt und gemeinsam
Spiele gespielt und Sport gemacht. Kinder und Lehrer haben den Ausflug
bei schönem Wetter genossen und freuen sich auf das neue Schulgebäude
im nächsten Schuljahr.

De nieuwe school in Laken
De juf ging al op bezoek in Laken en maakte foto‟s van onze klas. Ze is
heel groot en hoog. We zitten op de tweede verdieping. Iedere verdieping
heeft een kleur. De onze is groen. Het ziet er erg mooi uit. Nu moet de juf
nog alles mooi inrichten. We hopen dat er volgend jaar veel kinderen naar
de Nederlandstalige sectie komen. Plaats is er in ieder geval genoeg !! Volgende week mogen we zelf even gaan kijken.
Secondary Link: EEB4’s Seismology Project 2012
Throughout this school year an innovative, interdisciplinary project has
been developed in EEB4. As far as we know, we are the only European
School and indeed the first school in Belgium to become an amateur
seismographic station. In October 2011 contact was made with the
Royal Observatory of Belgium through the Dublin Institute for Advanced
Studies. It was agreed that EEB4 would host a pilot project for the ROB
and that they would provide us with a seismometer and the technical
support to use it.
In April the instrument arrived and was assembled by the students of
S2ENA. In May it was tuned by them and we began recording. Now that
it is operational it is capable of recording seismic waves from
earthquakes as far away as the Pacific (as long as they are above 6 on
the Richter Scale). It will also be able to record smaller seismic events
closer to home, storm waves shaking the coast and even the students‟
movements around the building!
Clearly the interdisciplinary nature of this project has great potential.
Students of Human Science will be interested in issues such as Plate
Tectonics and the relationship between the level of development of
countries and the extent to which earthquakes impact upon the
populations of those countries. Integrated Science students on the
other hand will be able to study the operation of the instrument; the
physics of earthquakes and the arrival times of different sets of waves.
Transition students will be especially excited to hear of such projects
that they can look forward to when they bridge the gap bewteen
Primary and Secondary.
The seismographic project has already led to another project involving
the engineers at Bureau Greisch. They have suggested that we record
seismographic data in Laeken in order to understand any implications
that may exist for the stability of both old and new buildings alike.
The Royal Observatory has already agreed to stream our data along
with their own on their website. This will mean that, in effect, we will be
their first amateur station. They have also agreed in principal to allow
visits of our students to their facilities; the weather station, the
seismological centre and of course the observatory itself. On Friday 1st
June Dr. Thomas Lecocq from the Observatory visited the students to
discuss their progress and to plan future projects.
These projects have great potential for interdisciplinary research and
will help to establish a strong scientific tradition as EEB4 develops.
Hopefully, students who examine plate technonics in P5 will be able to
utilise the data gathered by the school in years to come!
Une journée à la ferme
Le jeudi 10 mai, les élèves de P2FRA et P2FRB se sont rendus à la
ferme pédagogique de la Vallée à Vieux-Genappe.

Les enfants ont été accueillis par un bol de cacao puis ont nourri le bétail.
Ce fut l'occasion de se rendre compte de la diversité des animaux
présents à la ferme.
Ils ont ensuite pu suivre les différentes étapes de la fabrication du beurre.
Une balade en char tiré par un tracteur a clôturé cette journée bien
remplie.
De l'avis de tous, c'est une visite à refaire!
Science week!
Children across the school participated in a sizzling week of Science
activities in term 3.
Each level organised a series of mixed activites so that children from
different language sections worked together, whilst expanding their
scientfic brains.
Activities ranged from examining sound vibrations, creating foam
homes, experimenting with spaghetti and even defying the force of
gravity!
Vom Kindergarten in die Grundschule
Um den Übergang vom Kindergarten in die Grundschule fließend zu
gestalten hat die deutsche Sektion verschiedene Aktionen geplant
und durchgeführt.
An mehreren Morgen sind jeweils Gruppen von fünf bis sechs
aufgeregten Maternelle Kindern in die P 1 gegangen und im Gegenzug haben genauso viele Grundschulkinder den Kindergarten
besucht. Es war ein erstes Grundschulluftschnuppern, bei dem die
Kinder einen Eindruck von dem Klassenraum, dem Ablauf und Aufgaben bekommen haben. Sie berichteten erfreut, dass in der P1 auch
morgens gesungen wird. Zusammen mit den P 1 Kindern haben sie
„Obstsalat“ gespielt. In einer anschließenden Stillarbeitsphase haben
die
einen
gelesen
und
die
anderen
gemalt.
Die „großen Kinder“ haben in der Maternelle den Morgenkreis mitgestaltet. Sie haben zusammen mit den Kindern das Morgenlied gesungen, an das sie sich noch düster erinnern konnten und dann haben sie sich und ihre Lieblingsfächer vorgestellt. Sie haben den Kindergartenkindern auch von besonderen Sachen in der P 1 erzählt.
An einigen Nachmittagen haben einige besonders talentierte Vorleser
den Sprachunterricht der Maternelle bereichtert. Jeweils paarweise
sind sie mit von ihnen ausgewählten Büchern zum Vorlesen in die
Klassen gekommen und haben lustige, spannende, kürzere und
längere Geschichten und Märchen zum Besten gegeben. Die
„Kleinen“ lauschten wie gebannt und man konnte förmlich an ihren
staunenden Gesichtern ablesen, dass sie sich darauf freuen auch
endlich lesen zu lernen.
Für schönes Wetter sind noch gemeinsame Spiele auf dem Pausenhof geplant, bei denen die Kinder zusammen spielen und Spaß haben.
Aufregend wird der Start in die 1. Klasse natürlich immer noch, aber
die Zeit bis dahin sicherlich voller Vorfreude.
Technopolis
Am 7.6.2012 fuhren alle vierten Klassen unserer Schule zum Technopolis. Das ist ein tolles Museum für alle, die sich für Wissenschaft und
Technik interessieren. In Technopolis gibt es von Magneten über Wasserdruckmaschinen bis zu elektrischen Instrumenten alles, was einen
zum Beobachten und zum selbst Ausprobieren einlädt. Sehr beeindruckend war das Fahrrad auf dem Hochseil, auf dem man wie in einer
Zirkusnummer ganz hoch oben fahren konnte, wenn man den Mut dazu
hatte. Lustig waren auch die Wasserexperimente.
Wir alle hatten großen Spaß und unterbrachen unsere Entdeckungstour
nur für eine kurze Essenspause in der Kantine. Todmüde kehrten wir am
frühen Nachmittag in die Schule zurück. Es war ein wunderschönes
Erlebnis.

Exkursion zum Bauernhof
Am 22. Mai machten die Klassen P2 DE und P2 IT einen Ausflug zum
Bauernhof nach Villers-la-ville.
Alle Kinder waren in freudiger Erwartung, was uns wohl dieses Jahr
erwarten würde. Der Tag begann mit dem Melken der Kuh Margarita.
Anschließend wurde aus der frisch gemolkenen Milch gemeinsam
Frischkäse hergestellt, der am Ende des Tages mit nach Hause
genommen werden durfte. Nach einem Besuch bei den Schweinen
durften alle Kinder die Kälber und Stiere füttern. Am Nachmittag
wurden im Teich Frösche gesucht und gezählt, die auf Grund ihrer
Farbe zwischen den Seerosenblättern gar nicht so leicht zu entdecken
waren. Schließlich ging es zu den Kleintieren.
Die Kinder durften junge Hasen streicheln, die auf der Wiese
freigelassen wurden. Auch zwei Küken waren dabei. Es kitzelte
ziemlich, wenn man sie in den Händen hielt! Den krönenden Abschluss
bildete eine Fahrt im Anhänger des Traktors.
Insgesamt erlebten alle Kinder einen interessanten, spannenden Tag!
Eine neue Agenda für unsere Schule
Eine neue Schule braucht eine neue Agenda, eigentlich klar!
Wie angekündigt sollen die wunderbaren Werke, die während
unseres Malwettbewerbs entstanden sind, den Umschlag der Agenda
bilden.
Unser Sekundarstufenlehrer Herr Schmidt hat nun ein großes Puzzle entworfen.
Da gibt es viele Zeichnungen und Bilder zu entdecken, die Kinder unserer Schule
gemalt haben. Die ersten Seiten der Agenda werden speziellen Informationen, die nur unsere Schule betreffen, beinhalten: Persönliche Kontaktdaten, Ferienkalender, Stundenplan, Schulregeln usw.

Resulting from a promise made during the painting competition in
Primary, we have designed a new agenda cover!
Our secondary school teacher, Mr. Schmidt has now designed a large
puzzle made up of the entries from the art competition.
There are many drawings and pictures to discover on the fantastic cover
pages, and even more to see inside. The first pages of the agenda includes specific information pertaining only to our school: personal contacts, a holiday calendar, curriculum planner, school rules, and much
more!

Notre nouvelle école a besoin d'un nouveau journal de classe plus clair !
Provenant d'une promesse faite lors du concours de peinture en primaire,
nous avons conçu une couverture pour notre nouveau journal de classe !
Notre professeur d'école secondaire, M. Schmidt, a conçu un
grand puzzle constitué des participations de la compétition d'art.
Il y a de nombreux dessins et photos à découvrir sur les pages des fantastiques couvertures du nouveau journal de classe. Et vous en trouverez
davantage à l'intérieur. Les premières pages de l'agenda comprennent
des informations spécifiques se rapportant seulement à notre école: les
contacts personnels, un calendrier de vacances, planificateur du programme
scolaire, règles de l'école, et bien plus encore!
Elektroautos der P4DE
In den letzten Wochen des Schuljahres bastelten die Kinder der P4DE
Elektroautos.
Wir bastelten zuerst ein Gestell aus Bodenplatten, Achsen, Rädern und
zwei Achsenführungsschienen. Für die Beleuchtung der Autos wurde ein
Stromkreis mit Batterien, Drähten und Glühlämpchen eingebaut. Die
Kinder konstruierten eine Reihenschaltung oder eine Parallelschaltung.
Bei der Parallelschaltung leuchteten die Lämpchen stärker. Die Kinder
hatten viele Ideen. Es entstanden aus alten Kartons und Dosen z. B. ein
Romantic Hotel auf Rädern, ein Adlerauto, ein Ferienauto mit
Wasserrutsche, New York auf Rädern und vieles mehr. Am Ende wurden
alle Autos angemalt und verziert.

P5 NE Chevetogne
Woensdagochtend vertrokken we naar Chevetogne. Toen we aankwamen mochten we naar onze kamers. We pakten onze valies uit en
gingen naar de kantine. De eerste activiteit was een parcours in het bos.
Nadien vertelde een man heel leuke verhalen.
De volgende dag deden we een touwenparcours en mountainbike.
‟s Avonds was er een show en een feestje.
De chalets waren groot en de bungalows iets kleiner. Alle taalgroepen
waren door elkaar verdeeld. We leerden mekaar beter kennen. Het eten
was ook heel lekker.
We hebben wel zin om eens terug te gaan.

Classes de découvertes à Chevetogne.
Du 13 au 15 juin 2012, les P5 sont allés au domaine provincial de
Chevetogne et y ont participé à un tas d‟activités : spéléo (pour certains),
accrobranches, minigolf, VTT, course d‟orientation, ^parcours défi, …
Le jeudi soir, après un talent show étonnant où chacun a pu monter ses
aptitudes en chant, danse, magie ou autre, il y a eu une boum au cours
de laquelle tout le monde a dansé sur les tubes du moment.
Le vendredi, chacun est rentré chez soi après avoir eu la chance de visionner Johnny English dans le bus !
Ces trois jours nous laissent des souvenirs plein la tête !

P3/4 NE Blankenberge
We gingen drie dagen naar zee. Woensdagmiddag kwamen we aan en
we maakten een wandeling. In de namiddag gingen we naar Seafront.
Dat is een museum over de geschiedenis van de zee en de visvangst. Je
kan er ook een onderzeeër bezoeken. Donderdag waren er ateliers aan
het strand en in de namiddag gingen we naar Seafront. Er bleef wel tijd
over om aan het strand te spelen. Het eten was lekker en de kamers
waren mooi. We sliepen per twee op een kamer en we hadden een badkamer!!Vrijdag moesten we alweer vertekken. ‟s Morgens bezochten we
Het Zwin en nadien reden we naar school.
Classes de mer
Comme les années précédentes, tous les enfants ont apprécié leur
séjour à la côte belge. Ils ont visité le musée de la mer et son sousmarin, un aquarium marin, le Zwin (réserve naturelle); ils ont participé
également à des ateliers sur la plage.
Tous en ont gardé un très bon souvenir!
Knutselen
We probeerden een dinosaurus te boetseren. Het was wel erg moeilijk
om de poten en de nek in de goede vorm te krijgen. Dan die staart
nog !! Iedereen was geconcentreerd bezig !! De resultaten waren bij
sommigen prachtig, anderen moeten nog wat oefenen !!
Vilten vonden we leuker. Met twee kleuren wol hebben we een bloem
gemaakt.
De juf naaide er een speld onder en onze mama‟s hadden een mooie
broche.
Voor vaderdag hebben we aardbeienconfituur gemaakt. Eerst alle
aardbeien wassen en in stukjes snijden, suiker bijvoegen en al roerend
laten koken. Natuurlijk moesten we eerst proeven. Gelukkig was er
genoeg over om onze potjes te vullen.
Secondary Link: Soirée Disco !
Le samedi 23 juin, après le Somerfesto, une grande soirée disco était
organisée de 18.30 à 20.30 dans la salle de sport.
Durant cette boom (animée par DJ Finbarr), tout le monde dansait et
s‟éclatait ! Quand on le voulait, on pouvait aussi aller chercher à boire et
à manger.
A la fin de cette soirée, tout le monde était épuisé parce qu‟on avait
beaucoup dansé et bougé. On a vraiment beaucoup apprécié cette
soirée !

Presentation to P2 pupils
Nächstes Jahr werden die Kinder der P2 ein neues Fach in ihrem Stundenplan finden:
Die Europäischen Stunden.
Was ist denn das? Wozu soll das gut sein? Was machen wir da eigentlich?
Was genau in diesem Unterrichtsfach unterrichtet wird, wie Gruppen gebildet werden und welche Besonderheiten es gibt, wurde am 8. Juni ,
begleitet von einem wunderbaren Konzert der Orchestergruppe der Europäischen Stunde, erklärt.
So viele Informationen, das kann sich ja keiner merken!
Musst du auch nicht! Denn die Europäischen Stunden werden von jedem
Lehrer und jeder Lehrerin zu Beginn des kommenden Schuljahres noch
einmal erklärt.
Natürlich kannst du dich auch für das Orchester oder den Chor
anmelden, wenn du ein Instrument spielst oder gerne singst.
Wer macht den Känguru-Sprung?
Mathematikwettbewerb an der Europäischen Schule Brüssel IV
Känguru ist nicht nur ein australisches Beuteltier sondern auch der
Name des größten internationalen Mathematikwettbewerbs für
Schülerinnen und Schüler.
Im Schuljahr 2011 – 2012 beteiligen sich erstmals die Klasse P5DE
an diesem Wettbewerb.
Das Schöne an diesem Wettbewerb ist, dass man durch logisches
Denken komplexe Aufgabenstellungen ohne die üblichen Rechenoperationen lösen kann. Die Aufgaben sind interessant und
abwechslungsreich.
Das Motivierende ist: Alle gewinnen, egal wie viele Aufgaben gelöst
werden. Dennoch gibt es natürlich einen Klassensieger. Das ist der,
der die meisten Aufgaben richtig gelöst hat – ist ja auch logisch!
In diesem Schuljahr hat Teodor Dontchev sozusagen „den Vogel
abgeschossen“, indem er die meisten Aufgaben in einem Zeitrahmen
von 70 Minuten fehlerfrei gelöst hat. Im insgesamten Wettbewerb ist
er in seiner Kategorie dann auch noch Dritter geworden. Bravo!
Unser Sekundarstufendirektor Pär Fäldt, der nächstes Jahr diese
Klasse in die Obhut nehmen wird, hat die Preise und Urkunden
verteilt. Mit den Preisen wird nun die mathematische Logik in eine
dritte Dimension überführt. Mal sehen, was sich da Neues entwickeln
lässt.
Räumliches Denken kann man nicht durch ein Mathebuch erlernen,
das muss man einfach selbst ausprobieren! „Learning by Doing“ ist
hier das Motto: Kubra besteht aus 24 miteinander verbundenen
Teilen, die sich an den Berührungsflächen in vier verschiedene Positionen gegeneinander verdrehen lassen.
Zum Glück bekam jeder „eine Kubra“ als Preis für die Teilnahme, so
dass nun um die Wette gedreht und gebogen werden kann.
Ausflug der deutschsprachigen Abteilung nach ZemstBloso
Ein Bericht von Lisa Peters Klasse 4DE
Am 5.6.2012 fuhren die Maternelle und die Primaire der deutschsprachigen Abteilung um 9.15 Uhr nach Zemst in den Freizeitpark Bloso. Die Fahrt dauerte
ungefähr 1 Stunde.
Nach einem kurzen Frühstück rannten wir auf den riesigen Spielplatz. Dort gab
es einen Dschungelparcours, eine Seilbahn ein Kletternetz und noch vieles
mehr! Nach dem Mittagessen gingen die 4. und 5. Klassen ins Sportmuseum.
In Gruppen konnte man testen, wie gut man z. B. in der Reaktionsschnelligkeit,
im Gleichgewichtsgefühl und im Boxen war. Doch bei diesem Boxen es gab
keine Schlägerei, sondern ging lediglich darum, innerhalb von 30 Sekunden so
oft wie möglich mit einer Hand zwei gegenüberhängende Boxsäcke zu berühren.
Der zweite Teil des Besuchs im Sportmuseum fand dann im Freien statt. Wir
probierten Bowling und noch viele andere Sportarten. Alles wurde mit großem
Interesse aufgenommen.
Gegen 14.00Uhr ging es zurück zur Schule, wo die Schulbusse für die Heimfahrt
schon auf uns warteten.
Koninginnedag
Op maandag 30 april vierden we “Koninginnedag”.
In de sportzaal speelden we samen :
spijkerpoepen, zaklopen,…. en nog veel meer.
De zaal kleurde oranje!! Het was een leuke dag !

Somerfesto!
After weeks of planning and much anticipation Somerfesto got underway
on a glorious sunny Saturday morning. This edition of Somerfesto was
the biggest to date- in terms of attendance and also with regards to activities laid on for the children.
There were bouncy castles, games, circus activities, sports events, hip
hop dancing, face painting, tattoo stand, art corner and circus activities to
name but a few of the events. Also on hand were a Medieval Group who
mingled with the crowd and gave the children some history of the Medieval Times as well as allowing them to joust with one another!
Food stands representing the different sections in the school were overflowing with delicious national delicacies. If you were in the mood for other food stuffs there were hot dogs and candy floss also available. Refreshments for the warm day were served from the large bar.
There was a fantastic atmosphere all day with many people joining in for
this year's dance "Firework'. That evening, the P5 classes and Secondary
children had the opportunity to dance the evening away with their disco in
the school gym hall.
All in all the day was a great success. Many many thanks to all those who
assisted on the day and to the fantastic Somerfesto Committee for organizing such a great event!

Le samedi 23 juin, la Somerfesto s‟est déroulée dans notre école. Quand
on est arrivées, nous avons aperçu la cour de récréation transformée en
plaine de jeux ! Les parents avaient amené des friandises pour calmer la
faim des enfants qui couraient partout. Avec la tombola, les spectacles de
magie, les jeux amusants, les tables remplies de gâteau au chocolat, la
flash-mob, le terrain de football et un soleil radieux qui illuminait tout ça,
on peut dire que les enfants ne se sont pas ennuyés, loin de là…

Transition P5-S1 : une journée en secondaire.
Du 7 mai au 11 juin, chaque élève de P5 était invité à passer une journée
en secondaire dans le cadre de la transition P5-S1. Un parrain de secondaire, nous a accueillis et gyuidés durant la journée.
Voici les impressions de deux élèves:
« Pour moi, c‟était le 25 mai. Dès la descente du car, j‟ai pris à droite au
lieu d‟aller à gauche. Quel choc ! Surtout d‟être avec un élève du secondaire. Quand je suis entré dans la classe, j‟ai cru que les profs allaient
me manger tout cru mais cette idée a vite changé car la journée était super ! »
On a été bien accueillis par les secondaires. Au début, je me suis perdu
dans les couloirs. J‟ai été un peu déçu de ne pas avoir cours de sport, art
ou musique mais c‟était très intéressant quand même. »

Transition P5-S1 : la cérémonie de transition.
Le vendredi 29 juin a eu lieu la cérémonie de transition dans la salle de
sport de l‟école.
Toutes les classes de P5 étaient réunies pour recevoir leur certificat de
réussite pour être promus en S1.
Les élèves sont entrés et les sept représentants des différentes sections ont commencé leur discours. Quelques minutes plus tard, nous
avons chanté « Voilà, c‟est fini » de Jean-Louis Aubert avec des paroles
adaptées.
Nous avons alors reçu nos diplômes, écouté les discours des différents
directeurs et terminé en chantant « New Beginning » des Bucks Fizz.
Cette cérémonie était très solennelle !

The transition ceremony at EEB4
On the 29 June 2012 at 12:00 a transition ceremony took place at
EEB4. The transition ceremony represents end of the primary and
beginning of the secondary school. Pupils of all P5 language
sections prepared a short program for the parents who were
invited. The ceremony started off with greetings in different
languages made by pupils. Afterwards the pupils sang the song
called “Voilà c‟est fini”. After the song, class-by-class was called to
the stage and all the children got certificates handed by Ms. Viva
Ivanauskiene, head of the primary section. Afterwards, Mr. Faldt
Par Arvidson, head of the secondary section, gave a short speech.
The song called “New beginning” performed by all the children
concluded the ceremony. At the end all the parents and children
were invited to food and drink buffet in the schoolyard. Everybody
was happy.
Our Street Market!
Rainbow 1 and 2 created a street-market to sell their old toys.
The children were invited to bring to school 5-10 small toy items that
they wished to sell. They were asked to price the items at home
between 1-3 Euros each. In school the children then made wallets
and cut out 10 paper Euros to place inside it.
On the day the court yard buzzed outside our classrooms with
children‟s voices as they bartered with each other to sell their wares.
Kids For Uganda
In December 2007 our school adopted five children from Uganda.
The profit made from our projects went to them.
The “ Kids For Uganda “ programme is very grateful to our school for
the support that we have given to the project.
A part is for paying the school fees an other part was using for a solar
system.

We hope that for the next project we can count on your support so
that the children can further follow their education.
En décembre 2007 l‟école a adoptée cinq enfants d‟Ouganda.
Grâce à l‟argent des projets, ces cinq enfants ont pu être scolarisés.
La charité „ Kids For Uganda‟ vous remercie pour votre aide à leur
projet. Une part de l‟argent était employé pour mettre des panneaux
solaires. L‟autre part de l‟argent est employé pour payer les frais scolaires de nos enfants adoptés.

Chevetogne!
In June, the P5 classes set out for their big adventure - a three day trip
into the Ardennes forest, Chevetogne to be precise. This site is somewhere we have never taken our P5 classes before but was chosen for the
quality of its open spaces and the challenging activities available.
The P5 children participated in various activities which included caving,
high wire, all-terrain cycling, adventure courses, orienteering and even
some mini-golf! The children responded enthusiastically to the challenges presented to them, even when the weather did its best to dampen our
spirits. On the final evening they even had the energy to put forward
their talents in a special talent show with a range of songs, dances and
magic acts from every language section. It really was an evening to remember and finished off with a short party during which all of the children
performed the flash-mob dance designed for this year's summerfesto.
Supported by a great time, everyone returned to school tired and a bit
dirty but feeling more confident than before having overcome some amazing challenges on this amazing journey.
Le concours de danse des Heures Européennes
Lors de nos séances d‟heures européennes avec Mr. Benjamin en P3,
nous avons répété une chorégraphie afin de proposer un concours de
danse à la classe de Madame O‟Brien. Nous étions par groupes de 5 ou 6
enfants.
Afin de rendre notre danse plus agréable à regarder encore, nous avons
fabriqué des posters, des publicités ou des décors dans le but de récolter
un maximum de votes. Nous avons même customisé nos t-shirts de
groupes !
C‟est ainsi que nous avons invité la classe de Madame O‟Brien en P4 et
qu‟ils sont venus nous voir danser le 29 juin 2012. Ce fut très excitant de
pouvoir mettre en pratique ce que nous avions préparé pendant des
semaines !
Au final, les votes ont choisi le groupe « Les Stars » constitué de 5
élèves. Ils ont chacun remporté un prix spécial : un superbe CD comprenant toutes leurs chansons favorites dans une magnifique pochette
personnalisée. Mais les autres enfants ont aussi gagné quelque chose !
Ils ont reçu un splendide Award pour une très belle participation, ainsi
qu‟une photo souvenir des groupes.
Après toutes ses émotions, chacun a pu discuter avec tout le monde
autour d‟un dernier goûter !
Créations autour du film « Les Muppets » (P3FRA)
Lors du dernier trimestre, nous avons fabriqué beaucoup de choses
autour du film « Les Muppets ». C‟est en effet un film que nous tient à
cœur car il parle de tolérance, d‟amitié et de trouver son chemin.
Nous avons dès lors fait plusieurs activités autour du film : écriture,
arts plastiques et de la découverte du monde !
Nous avons ainsi rédigé et inventé une fin alternative au film et utilisant un nouveau vocabulaire et des mots épatants !
Puis, nous avons fabriqué nos propres affiches du film. N‟hésitez pas
à venir les admirer car elles sont accrochées sur notre porte de
classe ! Pour les créer, nous avons utilisé plusieurs techniques d‟arts,
dont celle de Chaissac.
Pour finir, nous avons fait nos propres Muppets (le mot est un mélange de « monstre » et « puppet ») à partir de chaussettes ! Nous les
utiliserons lors de notre petit-déjeuner de fin d‟année pour chanter une
chanson « Muppets » avec nos parents !
La journée de l’amitié des P3
La journée de l‟amitié des P3
Pour la journée de l‟amitié, tous les professeurs de troisième année ont
organisé chacun un jeu pour les enfants.
En plus, chaque élève a apporté un petit cadeau surprise pour son (ou
sa) futur(e) ami(e) !
Mr. Benjamin Servais a fait une course de sacs. Madame Sonja
Waschke a organisé une partie de football. Mr. Valter Martini a créé un
jeu de pétanques. Mr. James Marsden a fait une course d‟athlétisme.
Mme Harriet Kirby a crée un jeu de ballons et d‟équilibre. Madame
Cécile Ratinckx avait organisé un concours de tir à la corde. Mr. Degeyter a ouvert un parcours de hockey et Mme Greet Lanckmans nous a
fabriqué des jeux en bois.
A la fin d‟une matinée ensoleillée et de ces beaux jeux riches en émotions, nous nous sommes mis en cercle et nous avons ainsi distribué
nos cadeaux mystères à un ami au hasard.

A scuola è venuto uno studente universitario che ci ha insegnato
come fare un circuito chiuso: abbiamo attaccato con lo scotch due
batterie da 1,5 V l‟una, poi abbiamo collegato i coccodrilli al portalampada con la lampadina avvitata e infine abbiamo messo il filo di rame
sui poli delle batterie.
Abbiamo anche disegnato un circuito e qualche giorno dopo la maestra ci ha insegnato come disegnare un circuito chiuso utilizzando i
simboli.
ANDREA
Lo scorso maggio Diego, un giovane universitario che studia
elettricità, è venuto a spiegare il circuito chiuso e aperto.
Poche settimane dopo la maestra ci ha fatto fare degli esperimenti per
farci scoprire quali sono i materiali isolanti e quelli conduttori. Abbiamo
usato i colori a matita (per il legno), i pennarelli (per la plastica) e anche del cartoncino. Quando abbiamo usato questi materiali abbiamo
capito che sono isolanti perché non appena li abbiamo collegati la
lampadina non si è accesa.
Quando invece abbiamo usato una moneta di due centesimi, la carta
stagnola e poi anche un cucchiaino, non appena li abbiamo collegati
tramite un coccodrillo a due pile, la lampadina si è accesa.
VITTORIO
Un‟altra cosa che ci ha spiegato e fatto sperimentare Diego sono i circuiti in serie e in parallelo.
Il circuito in serie è costituito da tre o più fili di rame, due o più lampadine, due o più batterie da 1,5 volt. Si devono incollare le batterie con
un pezzo di scotch (la parte positiva di una batteria deve toccare la
parte negativa dell‟altra).Si prende una lampadina e si attacca un coccodrillo sulla vite del suo portalampada, poi con un altro filo si collega
il secondo coccodrillo ad una vite dell‟altro portalampada e così via;
con la parte opposta dell‟ultimo filo si tocca un polo della batteria e la
stessa cosa si fa con il primo filo.
In questo circuito il problema è che se si fulmina una lampada l‟altra
non funziona più perché la corrente si blocca alla lampada fulminata
quindi non arriva più alla lampadina successiva.
Diego ci ha anche spiegato il circuito in parallelo: il concetto è lo
stesso del circuito in serie, ma la forma del circuito è differente perché
le lampadine devono essere posizionate in parallelo e non una dopo
l‟altra. Così se si fulmina una lampadina l‟altra funzione perché la corrente passa nel filo del “perimetro” esterno del circuito.

For next year the representatives suggested that:
- Each meeting should last at least 45 minutes
- For the sake of continuity, it is necessary to avoid changing all
students from each class
- Proposals made by the Council must always be practical
- It's very important to always participate in the Student Council.
A small party ended the eleventh, and final meeting.
Looking forward to our new school in
Laeken
During the months of June and July, all classes of nursery and primary
visited the new site in Laeken as a transition project to our new school.
The school is almost ready and looks very impressive. During the visit the
children participated in different games and activities in the Royal park
near the new school.
There will be an OPEN DAY organised for all parents and pupils on
31st August 2012. Looking foward to see you all there!
GOOD BYE TO FINBARR HURLEY...
Mr Finbarr HURLEY has been a valuable member of staff for the last four years
in our school. With his charisma, talents, open mindedness and positive approach to people, he inspired many pedagogical projects and new school developments. Over the last two years, he has been Primary co-ordinator, a deputy of
the staff representative and a DJ for the Somerfesto.
After 10 years of devotion to European School he now has to say GOODBYE.
On Thursday 5 July 2012 the whole Anglophone section said a very moving
goodbye to Mr Finbarr HURLEY with a special assembly.
All the Anglophone pupils had adapted an ABBA song especially for the occasion; sounds of both laughter and tears flowed steadily from Mr HURLEY and
the whole team as this was performed for him.
All classes prepared special poems, songs and performances for Mr HURLEY.
The P5 pupils had also prepared a homemade shoe fashion show to send Mr
HURLEY off in style!
Gifts were also given by the entire section and school community, to show Mr
HURLEY our appreciation for his everlasting enthusiasm and energy for the
school and everything around it.
We thank Mr HURLEY for his devoted investment in our school and wish
him all the very best in his new adventures!

all for your continued support this year.
We hope you have splendid holidays and that you and your wonderful
children return fully recharged for a new start in September.
