LICENCED TO THRILL
Ski vacations and weekend escapes to the mountains are by their very
nature glamorous. What with the spectacular scenery, the beautiful
chalets and the chic apres-ski cocktails, its hard to not feel you’ve joined
the jet set and that’s even before you’ve set foot (or ski) on the slopes.

Across the Atlantic, Hollywood’s elite also wanted their own star-studded winter
bolt-hole, and, after hosting the World Ski Championships in 1950, Aspen took
the crown as America’s swankiest ski resort. Favoured by actors, millionaires and
socialites, this former silver-mining village often seems to have more cocktail
bars and designer stores than chair lifts but in fact it offers world class skiing and
snowboarding. Those wanting to star spot should head to Ajax Mountain where
the celebrities do their down-hill before partying in one of the area’s exclusive
nightclubs. And if you feel that you’ve been maybe a little too healthy with all
that sport, the town is also building itself a reputation as one of the world’s most
beautiful foodie spots with the exclusive Aspen Food and Wine festival a big
crowd-puller every year. You’ll soon gain back those lost kilos...
owever, if you really want to find the ultimate combination
of ski-ing prowess and sophisticated Alpine elegance, look no
further than everyone’s favorite spy, James Bond. Whether he’s
being chased down the piste by machine gun-toting villains,
unzipping his ski-suit to reveal a tuxedo and bow tie, or simply
seducing another beautiful woman by the log fire, Bond does it best.
Bond’s creator Ian Fleming himself moved with the in-crowd of the Fifties
and Sixties and certainly knew the chicest places to escape to for a winter
vacation. Switzerland was usually the country of choice with Gstaad being a
particular favorite and this tiny village still ranks as one of the most glamorous on earth. Bizarrely, the actual skiing in this area is at best rather average.
Of course, you need to be dressed the part if you are to live the James Bond ski life
and where better to go than McGregor. Boys can keep warm during the day with
one of this season’s Olympic style down jackets then slip into a retro Norwegian
patterned jumper to drink schnapps in the evening. Wannabe Bond girls can look
the part on the slopes with a vest with an oversized hood and then gather round
the fire-pit in the evening wearing a slim sixties style jacquard turtle-neck for the
ultimate in chalet chic. §
Instead, the real scene here is based on shopping in the expensive boutiques, taking long boozy lunches by the piste (rather than actually going on them) and then
changing into your third outfit of the day for a retro dinner of fondue followed
by drinks and a suite at the impossibly grand Gstaad Palace. It’s way out of reach
for most mere mortals but it’s fun to window-shop for an hour or so then call
in at the hotel bar to order a martini or two (shaken and not stirred of course!)

cGregor has supported many
different sportsmen in many different fields over the past decades
but perhaps one of the longest
and most popular relationships
has been with Giedo van der Garde, the charismatic and talented racing driver. Born in Holland
in 1985, Giedo got a taste for speed at a young
age with a passion for go-karting that culminated
in his winning the World Championship at the
tender age of thirteen. He then graduated to
Formula Renault and then rapidly on to Formula 3 when he was just nineteen. Eventually he
moved up to the World Series, where he became
champion. His GP2 career blossomed dramatically as he won three races in his debut season
and made the podium a further nine times in the
next couple of years. However, like most speed-
freaks, Giedo’s ultimate ambition from his earliest
childhood days was to race in Formula 1 and in
2012, impressed by his dazzling career so far, the
Malaysian-owned but English-based Caterham
Team approached him if he’d join their GP2 team
but, more importantly and most excitingly, be
a reserve driver for their prestigious Formula 1
team. He won two races in Spain and Singapore
and finished fifth overall in the GP2 series and
also took part in six Formula 1 sessions – in locations as far afield as Japan, China, Abu Dhabi and
Brazil – and performed so well that he became the
first driver to graduate from one team to another
and in 2013 realized his goal to join Formula 1.
This makes Giedo the only Dutch born racing driver currently on any Formula 1 team – a
fantastic achievement which, as a little boy on a
go-kart, he would hardly dared even dream about!

Giedo and the French driver Charles Pic, himself a
boy racer who had a spectacular rise up through the
ranks of go-karting, Formula Renault, Formula 3,
Renault World Series and GP2, make a formidable
and unstoppable duo for Caterham and so it seemed
a natural move that McGregor too would join the
ranks in the form of a sponsorship deal, finalized in
February of this year. McGregor already have a strong
history with Formula One as they have long been the
official clothing supplier to the Automobile Club de
Monaco who organise the two most glamorous road
races of them all, the Monaco Grand Prix and the
Rally of Monte Carlo. However, it was a particularly
proud moment for everybody on the first day of testing when Caterham’s brand new CT03 car appeared
on the track sporting the McGregor logo down
its side and a dream team was born! Appropriately
enough, Giedo will be driving car number 21 in the
2013 season which fits in nicely with his favorite
McGregor collection – Twenty-One by McGregor,
which in itself references 1921, the year that the
company was founded. Hopefully this is a good omen
and will bring him good fortune now that Giedo has
retired his infamous pink ‘lucky’ underwear and baseball cap which he credited for his early successes!
As well as being a talented sportsman, Giedo is
known to be a very stylish dresser, often seen out
and about in his home town of Amsterdam in a
McGregor hoody, a pair of jeans from Twenty-One
by McGregor and a pair of trainers from his huge
collection. To reflect this powerful combination of
ambition, skill and style, the Caterham Formula
One Team by McGregor line was launched this
summer to great acclaim. The design team has
collaborated closely with Caterham and Giedo to
produce a strong selection of clothes inspired by
the colours and graphics of the team’s Formula
One cars. A racy green with highlights of bold
black, white and bright yellow form the basic
palette and details such as go faster stripes snaking down polo shirts or nylon patches on zip-up
fleeces bring a sporty edge to a functional and
stylish collection. Fabrics are are both technical
and luxurious with comfort and practicality being
equally important. And, to tie everything together
and give it a strong visual identity, all the garments
and accessories, from caps and t-shirts to cardigans
and half-zip jumpers bear the number 21- Caterham logo and Giedo’s signature to bring a personal
touch. Best of all is a great new version of Giedo’s
iconic hoody: we can’t guarantee that you’ll win a
race whilst wearing it but you’ll certainly be in poll

Mens clothing is all about subtlety and changes happen slowly
and in tiny steps. In tailoring, jacket lapel sizes, shoulder widths
and pocket flaps increasing or decreasing by mere millimetres is
considered drastic and the best selling styles of suit remain virtually
the same season after season. However, a quiet revolution has been
happening over the past few years – and one that shows no sign of
going away: slowly but surely, things are getting shorter...

At the same time, in the past season or so, trousers have joined in the same game.
This is originally more of a casual concept but pant hems have been creeping
higher and higher, first with rolled up jeans and chinos, exposing a bit of sock.
Then, more recently, tailored trousers and even suit pants have been cut slimmer
and shorter – either with a turn up or with a clean hem. More controversially
(and much to the horror of hosiery companies world wide), socks have been disappearing and a good few centimeters of bare ankles have been exposed in offices,
bars and restaurants. The 'mankle' was born!
hroughout the last forty years of the twentieth century, mens jackets tended to be long enough to cover the bottom and had broad
shoulders to emphasise the wearer's masculinity (or so they hoped!).
However, as the clock ticked over into the new millenium, a handful
of more radical designers started showing a new silhouette in their
collections. Jackets began to be a couple of centimeters shorter and shoulders were
narrower. There was a schoolboy feeling to the look and the fashion crowd loved
it. Often trends like this burn bright for a season or two but then die out and the
fashion pack rebel and go the other way but this trend was a grower (or rather, a
shrinker). Men realised that softer tailoring was comfortable and that a blazer that
felt more like a cardigan worked well in the modern world. At the same time, with
more people travelling in cars or (in the case of many big cities) on bike, the new
shorter length was more practical. Over the seasons, jackets have got even shorter
(now maybe a full 5cm less than the standard size a few years ago), the construction
softer and in many cases, shoulder pads have disappeared completely. Wearing a stiff
formal suit now feels and looks old fashioned. And the new jacket is everywhere!
Distinction by McGregor was an early player in this trend by pioneering the softer,
shorter de-constructed blazer. Often in super-fine Italian wools, corduroy or even
jersey, the Distinction customer has got used to cutting a dash in his more modern
but still sophisticated tailoring. This season there is an even better selection of suits
and blazers – including a great double-breasted version. As for the shorter trouser...
well, you better start thinking about what colour socks you are going to wear in the
morning – the whole world might be looking! §
