Playing At Learning
Welcome to the Northern California
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Championship
FLL is an exciting and fun global robotics program that
ignites an enthusiasm for science, technology and
discovery in young people ages 9 to 14. Each year FLL
teams embark on an adventurous challenge based on
current, real-world issues.
In 1998, FIRST Founder Dean Kamen and the LEGO Group’s Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen joined forces to
create FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a powerful program that engages children in playful and meaningful learning while helping them discover the fun in science and technology through the FIRST
experience. Dean and Kjeld have a shared belief that FLL inspires teams to research, build, and
experiment, and by doing so, they live the entire process of creating ideas, solving problems, and
overcoming obstacles, while gaining confidence in their abilities to positively use technology.
We want to welcome you to the FIRST LEGO League Northern California Championship
Tournament. Forty-Eight teams qualified to attend this event from six district qualifier
tournaments.
Each of the participating teams have put in many hours refining their project solution and
presentation, as well as designing, building, programming, testing, and refining their
robot to accomplish as many of the game missions as possible. Some of their efforts will
work well and some may still need more effort — the learning opportunities will continue
after today including ways to embody the FLL Core Values.
Teams have accomplished a lot simply by being here. Every team’s success will come from
focusing on the journey to obtain knowledge, develop skills, build teamwork, and share
with their community.
We extend a special thank you to all of our visitors for taking the time to be a part of this
amazing event. Your support means a great deal to these teams. Make noise and let your
teams know you are here. We look forward to seeing you in years to come.
Enjoy your day!
Congratulations to every team. Your time to pump it up has arrived, so…
3-2-1…LEGO
2012 FLL Challenge Theme
FIRST® LEGO® League teams improve the quality
of life for seniors by helping them continue to be
independent, engaged, and connected in their
communities
In the 2012 SENIOR SOLUTIONS Challenge, FLL
teams will explore the topic of aging and how it
may affect a person’s ability to maintain his or her
lifestyle.
The 3 parts to the yearly challenge theme:
For the Robot Game,
teams build and program an
autonomous robot using LEGO
Mindstorms technology to score
points in 2:30 minute matches
on a themed playing field.
FLL Core Values
are the fundamental elements
that distinguish FLL.
Participants learn that friendly
competition and mutual gain are
not separate goals, and that
helping one another is the
foundation of teamwork.
For the Project,
teams explore a problem that
today’s scientists and engineers
are trying to solve, they must
develop an innovative solution to
that problem, and share their
findings. Projects will:
Create
Identify a problem
an innovative solution
Share it with others
Tournament Experience
Culmination of 8 or more weeks of teamwork and mentoring
Teams compete with their peers in exciting, high energy, sports-like events
 Team present their challenge solutions to a panel of judges
 What FLL kids accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting. And the skills
they learn will last a lifetime.

"The Help" FLL team was
formed by 1 girl Apoorva and
3 boys Karan, Nilesh, and
Vikrant, and most of them are
FLL rookies. Starting off as
acquaintances at Hopkins
Junior High, they proactively
formed a cohesive FLL team.
“The Help” team has collectively decided to continue the
senior research project solution for "loneliness" through
high school!
We are all rookies. Team includes Ayush(loves technology), Felix(techie), Arnav
(explorer), Era(Innovative),
and Daniel(likes to play baseball). Our robot name is Conquertron. We had fun meeting
seniors,learning about their
lives and problems and came
up with project Emergency

We spend almost as much
time goofing around in our

About Playing At Learning
Playing At Learning, playingatlearning.org, a SF Bay Area 501(c)(3) not-for-profit founded in 2004, is
dedicated to offering fun, hands-on activities. We focus on affordable and sustainable activities related to
science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. We are committed to increasing the number of
under-served and under-represented students pursuing STEM degrees.
Playing At Learning has partnered with FIRST to organize the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST LEGO
League (FLL) and Junior FIRST LEGO League (JrFLL) programs - throughout Northern California.
Playing At Learning programs make a real difference for our youth and a positive impact in our community.
We need your help to bring these programs to more young people.
Thank you to all who help make this program possible for our youth. We all share a
strong commitment for encouraging our young people to explore the fields of
science, technology, engineering and math.
We are grateful for your time, energy and support.
The FLL program continues to grow at an amazing rate and we hope that you get
some time to talk with the young people here competing today - their passion and
accomplishments are inspiring and give us hope for the future!.
