How are we supposed to get there if we are already somewhere else?
Layla and Basil are like binary stars, inseparable siblings who belong together and
nothing can come between them. Together they are a unit of two against the world.
Then Layla makes a decision that nobody understands, but which changes
everything: She decides to marry. A man form the old home, Saudi-Arabia. A
decision not made out of love, but out of principle. In doing so, she is giving up one
life for the sake of another – one that she does not know, that she has never lived
and which was denied to her by her parents’ decision to bring the children to
Germany.
“Because We Are Already Somewhere Else” tells the story of Basil’s journey to his
sister’s wedding. A last time he wants to fee the old closeness. At the same time the
journey leads him directly into his own past: the charmingly crazy cosmos of his
Saudi relatives – people who were never present in his “German life” and, at the
same time, were always there like a parallel universe.
What could have convinced Layla, a young, secular, freedom loving woman, to want
to go to a land in which women are anything but free? How can we confront such
feelings of foreignness, when they cannot be addressed in the Here and How? Is our
Western freedom perhaps a simple claim rather than a reality, now that nobody is
fighting for it any longer – nobody sees what a treasure it is? The author not only
asks painful questions, but finds answers to them that are every bit as uncomfortable
as the questions themselves, because they touch the inner self.
Rasha Khayat was born in 1978 in Dortmund. She grew up in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. At the
age of 11, her family moved back to Germany. She studied Comparative Literature, German
Literature and Philosophy in Bonn. Since 2005, she has been living in Hamburg as a writer,
translator and editor. She has spent longer periods of time in the Arabic world and blogs
about life, literature and pop culture in the middle East at www.westoestlichediva.de. In 2009,
she was a stipend holder in the Edenkoben class of the Jürgen Ponto Foundation. “Because
We Are Already Somewhere Else” is her first novel.

What to do when you are 17 years old and your parents disappear during night without leaving a note? You roll up your shirt sleeves and take care of the final steps of your education
yourself – with help of the worst horror movies mankind has seen, given away by the village’s
shopkeeper for free.
But Bruno has quite some other problems to deal with: he is not only living in a provincial
town, but on a monstrous island which rose from the oceans as result of nuclear tests: A
society on its knees, a dreamed of nation of poetry, which is now ruled by pure anarchy. Rebels maraud, NGOs try to supply the local population with food (and video tapes), antelopes
graze in the savannah between dumping grounds and a broken Utopia.

After many years, Konstantin returns to the backwater town of his childhood, back to Praam
on the black Laaber - deep in the Bavarian countryside. He had always suffered under the
narrowness of things here, but he had also experienced his first great love – to Rosalie, and
outsider like him. Suddenly everything is back again: the memories of growing up in the village. And also of the shadows from this time, because alongside his tender love story with
Rosalie, there was a dark event that unsettled his life at its very core.
Berni Mayer tells the story of a first love kept secret, that more and more becomes a conspiracy against the authoritarian world of parents and church. And he tells how the discovery of a
corpse in a dilapidated, moated castle changes everything. The story behind this body has
roots that run deep into the past and reveals the entanglement of the village’s long-time residents with a carefully suppressed atrocity committed during the time of National Socialism. It
forces both of them to choose a side, and to decide for or against silence.
Born in 1974 in Mallersdorf, Bavaria, Berni Mayer was the managing editor for MTV and
VIVA Online, and he also worked for the Mute Records label. His novels Mandels Buero and
Black Mandel were published in 2012, and in April 2014, their sequel Der grosse Mandel was
released (HEYNE HARDCORE). Berni Mayer lives with his family in Berlin. He blogs about
soccer, films, and the vileness of the world under bernimayer.de. He also works as a translator and writes for the Berliner Zeitung and Rolling Stone.

A delicate and oppressively lovely novel about the true adventures of life
‘Now and then, but especially as of now, life can demand to be lived impetuously. But you
don’t have to go as far as pretending you are dead, Leonard,’ his piano teacher had once
said to him. Eighteen-year old Leonard spends New Year’s Eve alone in his parents’ house.
On New Year’s Day, life simply comes to him: A strange woman is sleeping on the floor in
the hallway. Leonard spends the next night with her in the guest room. Emilie and Maria
meanwhile, both over seventy, are adventurous, if not quite up to the events that take place
during their stay in a Czech spa hotel. Was it really the piano teacher who drove them there
and did he really spend the night drunk in bed with the two old ladies?
In a merry dance of eleven episodes, Judith Kuckart’s characters experience unheard-of
things. It happens to them like an accident, like a spontaneous memory or a love letter from
the past. It gives their lives unexpected twists and turns and gives the reader an indication
that everything belongs together: Desire and terror, love and death, guilt and happiness. The
mysterious piano teacher keeps appearing in the circle. It finally moves from the present day
to the past, to a terrible event in the summer of 1989, and in a sudden realization, the eleven
occurrences come together as one big story.
Judith Kuckart, born in 1959 in Schwelm (Westphalia), lives as an author and director in Berlin and
Zurich. In 1986, she founded the dance theatre Skoronel, which she led until 1998. With DuMont,
Judith Kuckart has published the novel ‘Lenas Liebe’ (2002), which was filmed in 2012, the story
collection ‘Die Autorenwitwe’ (2003), the new release of her novel ‘Der Bibliothekar’ (2004), as well as
the novels ‘Kaiserstraße’ (2006), ‘Die Verdächtige’ (2008) and ‘Wünsche’ (2013) which was the
longslisted for the German Book Prize in 2013. Among other prizes, Judith Kuckart has received the
Rauriser Literaturpreis, the Villa Massimo scholarship, the Deutsche Kritikerpreis and in 2012 Annettevon-Droste-Hülshoff-Prize.

This is the story of Dorle. She lives in Berlin in a 20sq m basement flat of a grand
house, which is otherwise inhabited by old, grumpy aristocrats from Charlottenburg.
Working from home, she puts together glass chandeliers for a candelabra
manufacturer. And she allows herself to be used as a concierge by her neighbours,
even though she isn’t the concierge – what else are you supposed to do when eight
flowerpots are suddenly dumped on your doorstep with a sign saying: ‘Please water.
Am on holiday. Regards Bock.’
Yet Dorle is undemanding and content with her life. In contrast to Annegret Sonne,
84 years old, and full of life. When Mrs Sonne sets off for a three-month trip, she
asks Dorle to housesit her flat. But only under the condition that Dorle does exactly
the same things that the old lady did to make her life fun: watch films in bed and eat
chocolates, attend wellness and yoga classes and cook delicious recipes. Dorle even
suddenly has dates. Fair enough, the men are all over eighty, but they treat her like a
lady. Consequently Joe, Dorle’s only friend, who delivers the crystals to her every
week, has his hands full trying to remain in the running. But this would not be a good
story if there were not a few detours to the Happy End, right?

Dorothee Elmiger was born in Wetzikon, Switzerland, in 1985, grew up in Appenzell and lives today in Lucerne.
She had a grant from the Literaturkurs Klagenfurt in 2009 and her debut novel “Einladung an die Waghalsigen”
(DuMont 2010) has been awarded with the Kelag Prize at the Ingeborg Bachmann Festival 2010, the Aspekte
Literature Prize 2010 and the Rauriser Literaturpreis 2011, for “Schlafgänger” (DuMont 2013) she received the
Hermann-Hesse-Förderpreis 2014 and for her oeuvre the Schweizer Literaturpreis 2015 and the Erich Fried Preis
2015.

Death in the Olive Grove – a new case for Capitaine Roger Blanc
In the Province it has just turned autumn, but Capitaine Roger Blanc can find no peace in his
new home: in the adjacent village of Lançon, a propeller driven plane has crashed into an
olive grove. The pilot of the machine is dead. Blanc and his colleagues hurry down to the
scene of the accident and quickly find themselves confronted with a number of
inconsistencies. The dead man was a candidate to become a pilot for the military, besides
being well-known as an extremely skilled flyer. The statements of several witnesses to the
accident do not conform with each other. Was it perhaps not simply a tragic accident? The
Capitaine has no other choice but to bury himself once more in an investigation. Before long,
intriguing discoveries are made. It becomes apparent that the dead man was working for a
drug cartel in Marseille. Furthermore, his comrades seem anything but devastated by the
accident.
In the meantime, Blanc’s private life remains turbulent: with the arrival of his divorce papers
the end of his marriage is now confirmed in writing. His relationship to the investigative
magistrate Aveline Vialaron-Allègre, however, is not particularly easy. Perhaps the distraction
of work is not such a bad thing after all – but there must be another dead body in the olive
grove…
Cay Rademacher, born 1965, studied Anglo-American history,
ancient history and philosophy in Cologne and Washington. He
has been an editor at Geo since 1999 where he participated in
establishing the history magazine Geo-Epoche, whose managing
editor he has been since 2006. After his trilogy of historical postwar Hamburg-set crime novels around Inspector he started new
crime series set in Provence after moving with his family from
Hamburg to Provence (France): the Capitaine Roger Blanc
series “Mörderischer Mistral”/ Murderous Mistral (2014),

Hans-Henner Hess, born in Berlin-Mitte in 1973,
trained there to become a fully-qualified jurist. Because
the state did not require his services, he turned his back
on jurisprudence and kept himself busy as a writer and
dramaturg for varying television formats in Munich,
Leipzig and Berlin. On the side he wrote long and short
stories, plays and contributed texts for the spoken word
project “Schwindel” that only insiders are familiar with.
After a phase of contemplation, he has recently been
devoting himself to the art of crime again. His novels
“Herrentag” (2013) and “Der Bobmörder” (2014) have
been published by DuMont..

Louise Bonì, Chief Inspector of the Criminal Police Department of Freiburg, receives information from an
informant that an unknown man has procured two weapons from Russian criminals. Louise follows up on the
information in order to prevent a possible violent crime. Before too long, she finds the owner of the car that was
used by the buyer to pick up the weapons. The owner, however, has a watertight alibi for the evening in question.
The driver was somebody else, Ricky Janisch, a neo-Nazi and member of the extreme right “Southwest Brigade”.
Louise and her team observe Janisch and are led to further involved parties, all of whom belong to the right-wing
scene. The deeper they go, the more frightening the situation becomes: they begin to wonder whether it might be
only one branch of a larger neo-Nazi network. The main question is, however, how they are supposed to stop an
assassination when their opponent always seems to be one step ahead of them and they do not even know who
the target will be? Then Louise realises who the perfect victim is. But it's maybe already too late...
Oliver Bottini was born in 1965. His novels ‘Mord im Zeichen des Zen’, ‘Im Sommer der Mörder’, ‘Der kalte
Traum’ (DuMont 2012) and ‘Ein paar Tage Licht’ (DuMont 2014) were awarded the Deutsche Krimi Preis

Iris Grädler was born in 1963 in Halle (Westphalia). She has published poetry and short stories and
edited several anthologies. She now lives in Swakopmuns, Namibia. Her first novel “Meer des
