Welcome
Dear Participants of the Fifth Annual Transatlantic Business Conference,
The transatlantic relationship hit a rough patch again this past year. On all fronts – economic and political alike – there
were not many areas where the transatlantic partners could find common ground: the uncoordinated response to the
Arab spring, the diverging conclusions drawn from the nuclear disaster in Japan and the escalating sovereign debt crises
on both sides of the Atlantic are just three examples of the challenges that put the transatlantic relationship to the test.
At the same time, the winds of structural change continue to blow through the global economic system, and while the
transatlantic economic area’s weight and influence in the global arena are still high, they are dwindling nonetheless.
If the transatlantic partners want to continue to shape the global economic and political agenda, they have to address
such major challenges as these together.
Fred B. Irwin
President, AmCham Germany
How can the US and Europe remain competitive in the face of rapidly growing emerging markets? How will their huge
budget deficits impact governments’ ability to act, the international exchange-rate system and the world’s financial order?
What might a new energy infrastructure look like and can e-mobility really lead us to a greener future? Finding transatlantic answers to these questions will not be easy. But the search for these answers has the potential to breathe new
life into the long-standing relationship.
As a forum for decision-makers from the worlds of business and politics, the Fifth Annual Transatlantic Business Conference
aims to do just that. With inspirational keynote addresses, international panel discussions and in-depth workshops,
the conference intends to promote transatlantic dialogue each year and bring new vitality to this special relationship.
Jürgen R. Thumann
President of BusinessEurope,
Vice President of BDI
and Co-Chair of TABD
We hope this year’s conference will prove to be as inspirational and enjoyable as those of years past. We would also
like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our co-organizers, supporters and contributors from both sides
of the Atlantic: without them, this exciting event would not be possible.

Evening program and reception in the Commerzbank Tower
Open Discussion: The Transatlantic Partnership in the Face of Geopolitical Trends
The Arab spring, nuclear disaster in Japan, sovereign debt crises everywhere, US political deadlock and weak politics in the EU – the transatlantic
partnership is experiencing some dark days. Will the new geopolitical trends drive the partners further apart, or will they foster closer cooperation?
Given the serious domestic problems and foreign-policy constraints on both sides, will the transatlantic partners ever be able to find common
ground? Who has the time or energy to look beyond their borders? And what can be seen on the horizon?

Fighting for the Pole Position:
The Transatlantic Business Area and the Race for Global Competitiveness
Deindustrialization and financial collapse, faltering domestic markets, aging populations and the shortage of skilled workers – the current state
of and outlook for the US and European economies do not give reason for optimism. Powered by expanding populations and rising economic
performance, emerging markets will soon contribute more to global GDP than developed economies. How can global businesses in the US and
Europe remain competitive and maintain their economic appeal? What can they do to avoid being pushed into the wings of global economics?

Panel I
11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
The Era of E-Mobility? Concepts, Opportunities and Challenges of Building a New Energy Infrastructure
Full mobility with zero emissions: that’s e-mobility’s big promise. In the US, car buyers are slowly developing an interest in economical (hybrid)
models. In Europe, armies of developers are conducting research on the drive systems of the future. But what is technically feasible and what makes
economic sense? Who should pay for the massive investments and what will be outdated before it is brought on line? Despite all good intentions,
full-fledged e-mobility is just as far away as transatlantic cooperation is on the road toward electrification.

Where Are Sovereign Debt Crises, Financial-Market Turbulence and the Global Loss of Confidence
Leading Us? The Future of the Global Financial Order
Sovereign debt crises in Europe and the US are triggering massive upheaval in financial markets. Due to their lack of compelling concepts and

financial order taking shape? What role will the United States’ dependence on its principal creditor, China, play? Can a relapse into a second
recession still be avoided? And how can international companies continue to operate successfully under these conditions?
