Dove siete" Installation Isola Bella, Hotel Elvezia, Room 6 Lago Maggiore, Italy 2 July – 30 September 2010 An installation of 66 plaster casts of faces and hands on thin metal poles, swaying like reeds in the wind in a black room of Hotel Elvezia on the Isola Bella of Lake Maggiore. On the black walls, the titles of love songs in four languages are inscribed in chalk. The floor is covered with ash. The casts capture glimpses of life. They represent gestures and emotions - a dialog between hands and faces; a society of men and women thinking and reflecting, eating and drinking, brushing their teeth, whistling, squinting, thumb-sucking, smoking, cleaning their noses, applying lipstick and make-up, rubbing their eyes, kissing feet, with a fist in their face, posing, grimacing, taking photographs, saying hello, even wearing glasses. The title pertains to the installation as a whole: What is there highlights what is not there. The casts are only a skin, a visible aura - the models themselves are not present. The work of the casting consists in their nothingness. What is there, serves as material. What is not, serves as work. The texts of the love songs are there on the wall, but the music itself is absent - the melodies are missing. The handwritten lines in chalk represent the motto "Love songs as wallpaper". Their scope is to draw out of the former hotel room, in which untold numbers of lovers have stayed, a soupçon of flirtatiousness, seduction and love: Fiction loves phantoms, or rather: phantoms love fiction. "Lux Pons" was an art project consisting of about 40 light projections during the VI. Biennale dell›Immagine in Chiasso based on the theme "Geographies of the Invisible". 49 floodlights, positioned in the neutral zone, or "noman›s land", between Switzerland and Italy, illumined the fronts of houses and niches, the ground, trees and fields, on both sides of the border, creating an impression of virtual unification over the divided territory. Italian and Swiss installations were set up in the neutral zone, between the two real national borders, resulting in a re-definition of the free, yet forbidden, zone of the no-man›s land. There were enclosures, fences and perimeters in and out of which the projections beamed. The light emanating from the projections and their visual impact on the common playing field of the otherwise latent border-zone, was designed to prompt the question: "Is enclosure not equally also marginalisation?" The projected images or slides were beamed out of the inside of the houses of people who actually live and/or work on the border. An intimate environment is an important factor in many people›s lives and an essential part of their wellbeing. Objects and mementos personalise an appartment, recalling moments of happiness and contentment. To make these very personal elements (artifacts) of one›s life story public and to project them onto facades, is a testimony to openness and trust in others. The hidden Cupid in the rooms reflects his image on the facades, without exposing their inhabitants. The pictures are arranged pieces, photographs, beloved accessories, all telling 1000 stories. They shine out, as little "Lights" out of the hearts of the appartments shining out into the open space; a kaleidoscope of memories, unforgettable sights and dreams, revealed on the walls as pictures of an invisible world. The project was realised by artists Benno Meuwly and Curt Walter in collaboration with the "MonteArte" artists association. It consisted of various slidepictures projected onto facades, walls, the ground, niches and passageways around the village. The pictures rose out of the forest surrounding the village, gowing ever nearer to it. The goal, was to create the sensation of the forest over-growing into the village. By means of light-projections, the spacial structure of the village was virutally disintegrated. Houses, areas, structures and facades were alientated from their normal use as their usual appearance diappeared. Meanwhile, the projections created new, surprising and even irritating perspectives of the passageways, facades and structures of the village, as they faded into the scenery of the magical forest. The work was designed to demonstrate how vulnerable human perception is to manipulation and conditioning, whilst at the same time, highlighting a very actual problem. A direct physical experience of the atmosphere of the work in situ was fundamental to a full appreciation of the project. http://montearte.blogspot.com/ http://www.montearte.ch Films: DVD: http://www.lulu.com/content/2656878 in_boscamento_artworks.mov Cultural support: Comune, Castel san Pietro | Repubblica e Cantone Ticino, Swisslos | Ernst Göhner Stiftung, Zug | Ente touristico Mendrisiotto | Casino, Mendrisio | Raiffeisen, Castel san Petro | Brinus SA, Balerna | Fondazione dell´esposizione nazionale svizzera 1939 | Regione Valle di Muggio | Chicco d’Oro, Balerna | Restaurante, Conca Bella, Vacallo | Borgovecchio, Balerna | Progetto Stampa, Chiasso | Init Seven, Zürich for Webhosting, MonteArte | Banca popolare di Sondrio, Chiasso Caption: Top: Detail of the Installation "in...boscamento", Church Square, MonteArte, Monte Center: Detail of the Installation "in...boscamento" with tower Below: Detail of the Installation "in...boscamento" with church Book: IN...BOSCAMENTO ISBN 978-88-7967-288-7 Curt Walter | Visual Artist | Atelier Artsite | CH - 8675 Monte | 079 480 86 75 | arte@curtwalter.ch | www.curtwalter.ch | www.visibel.ch 6 "Generosa Enterprise" Exhibition, Interaktive Installation ETH, Platzspitz, Zürich 22 April – 8 May 2005 Exhibition: "Worlds of Science" celebrating the 150th Anniversary of ETH Zürich, 22.April - 8 May 2005 at Platzspitz Zürich. Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of ETH "Welcome Tomorrow", the Monte Generoso was brought to Platzspitz-Park. Visitors were invited to take part in an interactive game developed by Curt Walter and the ETH-Zürich Global Information Systems Group. Combining art, science and the latest ITTechnologies, the game allowed players to plunge into the atmosphere of Monte Generoso. Scientific research data, films, photographs, music, art, and texts about the air, earth, water and fauna of the Monte Generoso in German and Italian were stored in a database. Visitors were encouraged to give free flight to their creativity as they drew on this digital information to develop their own personal impression of the mountain on a blank piece of paper Sponsored by ETH Zürich Exhibited again on 22 July 2006: Visione sul Monte, MonteArte, Monte (TI) http://www.generosa.ethz.ch http://www.globis.ethz.ch/research/paper/ applications/generosa http://www.artsite.ch http://www.curtwalter.ch Cultural support: - ETH Zürich - Sitemapping, BAK Caption: Top: Detail of the Installation "Generosa Enterprise", Visitors to the installation Center: Detail of the Installation "Generosa Enterprise", Drawing area and projection Below: Detail of the Installation "Generosa Enterprise" Curt Walter | Visual Artist | Atelier Artsite | CH - 8675 Monte | 079 480 86 75 | arte@curtwalter.ch | www.curtwalter.ch | www.visibel.ch 7 "noWaterWater" Performance-Event und Mailart- und Tanz Projekt MonteArte, Monte, TI, Switzerland 26 July 2003 - 9 September 2003 In the Unesco-year of Water, the Performance-Event and Mail-art show "noWaterWater" took place on the pilgrim-path to the Grotto of Our Lady in Monte, Ticino. More than 250 guests from Italy and all over Switzerland gathered especially for this open-air event, offered by Curt Walter in collaboration with MonteArte. The audience was broadly mixed, and it was rewarding to us to introduce people who otherwise never visited theater or art productions to such a variety of art-forms as dance, performance, music and graphic art. Many journalists and press-photographers, cultural promoters and sponsers were also present. The natural setting, with its riverbeds, trees, shrubs, paths and galleries, together with the dancers and musicians in the spotlight created atmospheric and poetic pictures. The Mailart-Postcard presentation of approx. 400 creations by 200 different artists, together with the dance performances created a "happening experience", which the audience found very enjoyable and inviting. The portable museums are wooden boxes painted with oil inside and out. They contain sculptures, objects, drawings and photographs. The sculptures were photographed under a spectral light, with sketched versions executed subsequently. These Portable Museums constitute an impression of the various disciplines that I have explored over the years: sculpture, painting, object-art, drawings and photographs. "I want to give the things a protective cover!". The portable museums are wooden boxes painted with oil inside and out. They contain sculptures, objects, drawings and photographs. The sculptures were photographed under a spectral light, from which sketched versions were also drawn. These Portable Museums constitute an impression of the various disciplines that I explored over the years: sculpture, painting, object-art, drawings and photographs. Terracotta: Curt Walter exploits an endless resource of miniatures in terracotta, a collection of which is featured in each Portable Museum. Painting: The outer-sides and lids are painted using the techniques and painting materials of the old masters. Materials: China ink - Oil - Casein painting on wood. Venitian enamel - Oil painting. Canvas on Wood. Dissolution through light. The engraved landscape... Photographs: By means of a 180 degree inversion of photos of the sculptures, the sculptures are brought into a new perspective. Photographs taken using spectroscopic lamp. Drawings: Drawings and sketches of the miniatures are an essential part of the contents of every box. Objects: To make the useless useful...and the useful useless. Lost and found objects newly assembled in interesting and meaningful ways, thus generating further content in each box. Colour is applied and then removed or reduced on the canvasses, sometimes to the point that it disappears entirely, leaving only the singed canvas. respektive I have developed a variety of "singeing" techniques. One is through water and fire: from a a single drop of water, comes a whole cloud, like a vulcano spitting fire and ice in the sky. What is decisive is only the immediate condensation of the water, that is burnt-in with the Bunsen-burner. The works are characterised by an extremely reduced, laconic and formal, as well as aesthetic economy. Another technique, combines the singeing with the application of colour. Here, I am seeking a middleground between application and removal. Mostly painted using self-made emulsion and pigments, based on the Casein-technique. Yet another technique combines brush-technique or calligraphy with fire. Water is directly applied to the canvas with a paintbrush. The brush-strokes are invisible. Both the accidental and intentional are conjured out of the flame of the welder. Cycle: "Our Daily Bread" developed in 1988, consisting of a few dozen pictures on supports made from floursacks from the Altstetten Mill slashed up and worked on the from the inside. The series also included large-scale works, 3x3m. Selected works exhibited in Visibel, Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Zürich. www.visibel.ch Caption: Top: Large fire panel, fire and water on canvas, 300x300cm Center: Large fire panel, fire and water on cotton, approx 150x200cm Below: 15-part work, water, fire and caseintempera on canvas, mounted on wood, depending on size 21x29.6cm Curt Walter | Visual Artist | Atelier Artsite | CH - 8675 Monte | 079 480 86 75 | arte@curtwalter.ch | www.curtwalter.ch | www.visibel.ch 16 Breadpapers, "Tschernobill’s" Solo exhibition Galerie Jörg Stummer, Zürich Restaurant Glashof, Zug 1986 - 1989 Deeply struck by the catastrophe of Tschernobyl, I dedicated myself exclusively to exploring the scenic issues that it posed. Executed on silk-paper using guache, egg tempera, tempera, and apple-peel (among other materials), with japanese brushes, the hundreds of paintings in this series ranged from a method of NON-method, to form-busting attitudes. Spray-brush tools were employed as a weapon on these paintings, emphasising their inherent helplessness: I had to struggle against the invisible force that came upon us. On about 70 occasions I observed people and captured their faces in veiled or packed plaster forms. For me, the molds were a memorial against the violence, torture, military threat, hunger and poverty that threatened us in this time. Among the participants of the action were Didi Bridgewater, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Claude Nobs and many others. The work, entirely made out of clay, is designed to represent the I Ching in three-dimensional perspective. It tells the story of a family with three sons and three daughters who go to settle in a fertile land together with their family and friends, seeking the way back to a source. Previouly, they lived in floating cities, on islands in the sea, which were destroyed and sank. The family therefore set out to find a sheltered place, where they might build a civilisation for their people. The land they sought was revealed to them through the oracles, which promised that there would be enough water to supply their people for the next 3000 years. They built a fountain as the centrepoint of their society, as a social structure symbolising a source of heritage and coherence in their lives (Yin & Yang). Around this fountain were then built eight cities, in eight cardinal directions. In the project of "The City of Changes", the inspiration of my design focused on the area of tension, between the concept of Ruin-mythology on one hand and the plan and layout for a city-model, a new and future city. In linking the past to the future, I wanted to distinguish both sides, and then join them together. The materials that I used were draw mostly from natural sources such as clay, lava, wood, bones, stones and coal. I also developed a machine to produce bricks made from clay, that I then worked on using a tweezers. The formats of these works range from 21 x 29.6 to 140x100cm, on various bases: canvas and cotton stretched on wood. In the series "Dissolution" (approx. 50 paintings), Casein, egg-tempera, and Venitian enamel-oil were used. (See picture below) In my artistic practice, I play with chance and accident, pitting painting against painting. In this, I am most preoccupied with the "issue of the picture". Various newer works of this type are currently exposed at the VISIBEL contemporary art space, Zürich http://www.visibel.ch Caption: Top: Ballonbild, venetian Oil Painting on canbas, 100x140 cm Center: Zentrum, venetian Oil Painting on canbas, 100x140 cm Below: from the series "Auflösung"", 21x29.6cm, venetian Oil Painting on canbas and Wood. Sketches and drafts for the process or projects or as first ideas for later works were developed using all sorts of materials, including: pencil, China ink, ballpoint, colour pencil, crayon, woodcarving, charcoal, sepia, blood, fruit juice, apple-peel, walnut schell, ash, lava. For example, "In Memoriam" is a record by a Israeli dance and music group, worked on using a soldering iron to create a series of craters protruding from the vinyl. When played, they constantly throw the pickup head of the LP off into another groove, provoking constant interruptions. Imagine: you are listening to music in a concert hall in Israel, with bombs constantly interrupting the performance. Film The Vinyl record is punctured with craters... the music is disrupted by bomb attacks... everything carries on, everything keeps going round... only differently. Photos are, for me, primarily works of art. They are set in various environments, through projections, installations or at happenings. Photographs also serve as background for paintings, collages, etc. To view samples, please visit: http://www.youtube.com/curtwalter#p/u/1/3IHHSPONMY http://picasaweb.google.com/cewete/ InBoscamento?feat=directlink http://montearte.blogspot.com http://www.lulu.com/product/dvd/in_ boscamento-07/3128608 I also use photographs to document my artistic processes, works and actions. These are then either archived or worked. The film camera with moving pictures was a progression from the photo-camera to the film camera. A movie camera is also like a means or a tool with a purpose. It serves me, like the photocamera, to document or to create work. In this respect, I have been particularly fascinated by 8mm films, for the functionality of the camera itself. One such project was an 8mm documentary film in collaboration with internationally renowned artist Lawrence Weiner at the Kunsthaus Zug, on the theme "The Word and Why Word". Documentation http://www.lulu.com/product/dvd/in_ boscamento-07/3128608 Artwork Here is an example, based on the theme of peace and conflict in Israel and Palestine. An LP, drilled with holes, is played, constantly grating on the wound.
