ANTIQUES INFO - November/December 09 n the last edition we covered the RICS Report for the second quarter of 2009, which showed silverware, militaria and jewellery as the strongest sections, prices rising across the board - this the macro market. To balance and support the trends we also analysed the micro market with up to 100 each of silver/jewellery lots from the latest sales. Here to support the continuing statistical rises in the prices of militaria I have included about a 100 medal sales from 2008 and 2009. These have been downloaded from our Website Database, where there are several thousand illustrated results in this category. Our Gold Services subscribers can access all categories in the Database. At 2, only 583 Naval General Service medals for the Glorious 1st June (1794) were issued. This medal and clasp should have fetched £2,000-£3,000, but, without a ribbon the buyer paid £5,410. And at 4 the Waterloo Medal should have achieved a similar result, but went over £4,000. At 6 the Military General Service Medal with eight clasps, predictably went over £3,000 and a further Waterloo Medal at 12, with its suspender ring lost, still managed £1,764 and at 13 a further Waterloo Medal, minus the ribbon fetched about the same. At 16 the campaign moves to the Gold Coast, 18731874. This naval Ashantee Medal with Coomassie Bar should have fetched perhaps £400-£500 but went to £1,152. Bucking the trend the George V ‘named’ DSM at 21 should have achieved about a £1,000 and there is nothing to suggest otherwise so the result of £705 may just be a quirk in the market on the day. At 29 is a South Africa Medal for the Zulu Campaign and about £500 is right. The most famous battle was Rorke’s Drift, immortalised in the film Zulu, with Stanley Baker and Michael Caine. Here the garrison of 139 men inflicted heavy losses on a 3,000 strong Zulu force. Eleven VCs were won in this engagement and if a Zulu Medal came on the market that could be attributed to a Rorke’s Drift participant then it could achieve £25,000-£35,000. Catching the eye at 28 is a Military Medal with the wrong ribbon, which should be red, white and blue bars, yet the £500 plus is a very good price, possibly influenced by the Irish connection. There is a further Zulu Medal at 40. There are three Indian Mutiny Medals (1857-1858) in these pages at 32, 50 and 52, which averaged £330, about par for the course. They can go to £1,500 if an original defender at Lucknow and up to £3,000-£5,000 with four clasps. In 2004 a five medal group of various campaign medals, including the Indian Mutiny, fetched almost £6,000. All medals are not associated with campaigns. At 66 is a BEM, which fetched £129. The ribbon tells us that this is a civil and not a military version, which would have gone to £300. The bible is the Medal Yearbook which publishes every year, currently at £19.95, supported by the monthly Medal News. (www.tokenpublishing.com) They also produce Coin News and the Coin Yearbook at only £9.95. I am frequently astonished by the reluctance of dealers to buy these ‘bibles of the trade’. Recently I bought an eighteenth century halfpenny from an antiques shop for only £8 which should have sold for £70. I asked the dealer if he used Coin Yearbook and he replied he wasn’t prepared to pay for either the coin or medal books as they were too expensive! I Waterloo medal, awarded to William West, Gunner, Royal Foot Artillery, original clip with thick white metal wire suspension, no ribbon. Halls Fine Art, Shrewsbury. Jul 09. HP: £1,450. ABP: £1,705.
