We were disappointed in our first Gartenfest in January,
having to cope with so much rain, which kept us inside.
The February fest gave us more chances to do better with
our craft items.
The “Quarter Auction” is on March 9th. We hope everyone
will come and join us for the fun. Quarters in your pockets
can get very heavy, so bring them all along and see what
they might get you in return.

To all the GALS for all of the hard work. You finished everything in record time!
We are also looking forward to our annual Dinner Theater
coming up on February 25th. We will be seeing “Sister
Act” and enjoying having dinner with our friends.

New Member Dues Statement
On January 26, 2016, the Board of Directors approved two changes to new member
dues. These changes do not affect dues requirements for our current members.
Change #1:

The new member's first year dues shall be paid when he/she becomes a temporary
member. The applicant will pay their dues when the New Membership
Committee recommends their acceptance to the Board and their Temporary
Membership Card is issued, rather then at the time of initiation.
This was
decided to better align the due date of the dues with the time they receive their
temporary membership.
Change #2:

The new member's first year dues will be prorated according to the month they
became a member.
This was decided to create a fair and equitable means of establishing a dues amount
appropriate to the number of actual months of membership during the first year.

success the
Edison Festival
of Light parade was. If you don't know yet, our
float took top honors. We received an award for
the top float. I cannot thank people enough, for
their efforts in the construction of the float, and
for their participation on parade day. It was

good.
We had a great time, the weather was beautiful,
the food was good, and the camaraderie was
fantastic.

Festival Ticket Sales
I talked to some of our longtime members and many have agreed that the Gardenfest of February 21, 2016
was the best attended in over ten years. Many believe that the success of the event was because of the
presence of the “Budweiser Clydesdales“ along with advertising of the event in various advertising media.
Putting this event together was a remarkable feat of our staff. When the Clydesdales appeared in the parking
lot and were hitched up to the Anheuser-Busch Beer Wagon many patrons gathered in the parking lot for
photo pictures. The Clydesdales made several circular tours in the parking lot which was not the original
planed tour. Our BAR personnel had the foresight to bring a portable beer set-up to serve beer for the crowd.
This bar was manned by Otto and Renate Bachmann, and when the parade was over and the crowd dispersed
and the bar was dismantled.

The Clydesdale Breed
Farmers living in the 19th century along the banks
of the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland, bred
the Great Flemish Horse, the forerunner of the
Clydesdale. These first draft horses pulled loads of
more than one ton at a walking speed of five miles
per hour. Soon their reputation spread beyond the
Scottish borders.
Many of the Clydesdales owned by Anheuser-Bush
are raised at Grant’s Farm House near St. Louis.
There are approximately 35 mares, stallions and
foals with an average of 15 foals produce each year.
There are about 250 Clydesdales kept at various
locations throughout the United States, one of the
largest herds of Clydesdale horses in the world.
The largest breeding facility is at Warm Springs
Ranch near Boonville, Missouri which is about 150
miles west of St. Louis.
The Clydesdales were first introduced to the public
on April 7, 1933 to celebrate the repeal of
Prohibition. August A. Busch, Jr. presented the
hitch as a gift to his father, August Anheuser
Busch, Sr., who was guided outside the brewery by
the ruse of being told his son had purchased him a
new car, but instead was greeted by the horses,
pulling a red, and white and gold beer wagon. The
hitch proceeded to carry the first case of postProhibition beer from the St. Louis brewery in a
special journey down Pestalozzi Street in St. Louis.
Recognizing the advertising and promotional
potential of a horse-drawn beer wagon, Busch, Sr.
had the team sent by rail to New York City, where
it picked up two cases of Budweiser beer at New
Jersey’s Newark Airport, and present it to Al Smith,
former governor of New York and an instrumental
force in the repeal of Prohibition.

Today, the traveling hitches are on the road at least
10 months every year based out of St. Louis,
Missouri, Merrimack, New Hampshire and Fort
Collins, Colorado. There are ten horses that travel
on each team. Eight are in harness when
performing at any one time and other two horses
provide alternates for the hitch as needed. Several
professional handlers accompany each team. There
is round-the-clock care for the horses.
Transportation for each hitch requires three 50-foot
semis. Two carry the horses; the third transports a
red, white and gold beer wagon and other
equipment. The horses’ comfort is enhanced with
air-cushion suspension and thick rubber flooring.
The World Famous Budweiser Clydesdales have
been a symbol for Anheuser-Busch for more than 60
years. But many people don’t realize is that a
Dalmatian has been a faithful companion to the
hitch since the 1950s.
In the early days the, Dalmatians were bred and
trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon
when the driver went inside to make deliveries. The
black-and-white spotted dogs were swift enough to
keep up with the wagons, and their light-colored
bodies and markings made them easier to see
during the twilight hours. Today the Dalmatians
are perched atop the wagon, seated next to the
driver any time the Budweiser Clydesdales make an
appearance, including the Rose Parade, the Super
Bowl, the Winter Olympics and the exciting Atlanta
St. Patricks’ Parade. They are an integral part of
the Clydesdale operation.

und es geschieht hier in unserem Land!!!
Hast du bemerkt, dass die Treppen jeden
Tag steiler werden. Lebensmittel immer
schwerer und Entfernungen immer weiter.
Gestern ging ich aus dem Haus und
war verblüfft, wie lang unsere Straße geworden ist!
Die Gravitation hat auch stark zugenommen
in den letzten 30 Jahren. Ich spüre es besonders beim Aufstehen von meinem Sofa.
Und die Leute sind jetzt auch weniger rücksichtsvoll, besonders die jungen.
Sie flüstern die ganze Zeit!
Wenn du sie bittest lauter zu sprechen,
wiederholen sie die stille Nachricht mit der
Lippensprache. Was denken die sich, bin ich
vielleicht ein Lippenleser?
du auf der Autobahn unterwegs bist. Alles
bremst sich hinter dir ein, ich sehe sie
schreien und gestikulieren im Rückspiegel.
Ihre Bremsen müssen einen furchtbaren

Auch die Hersteller von Kleidung sind
zur Zeit weniger seriös. Warum bezeichnen
sie plötzlich Größe 36 oder 38 als Kleid der
Größe 48 und 50? Glauben sie, dass es
keiner bemerkt?
Ebenso unseriös sind die Hersteller vonPersonenwaagen! Denken die wirklich, dass ich
glaube, was ich auf der Skala sehe? HA! Ich
habe mir nie was aus den Zahlen gemacht!
Wen wollen diese Leute reinlegen?
Ich wollte jemandem anrufen und berichten,
was da vorgeht, aber die Telekom ist auch
