WATER RESOURCES OF THE REGION The region is washed by Black and Azov Seas as well as by Syvash (Hnyle more/Putrid Sea). Education There were 496 comprehensive schools with 107.1 thousand pupils in 2012/2013 school year. Vocational technical schools amounted to 29 units with 4.7 thousand students. Training of personnel with higher education by professional orientation is carried out in 18 higher education institutions (HEI), among which 11 HEI have I-II accreditation levels, 7 HEI have III-IV accreditation levels. Economic potential PRIORITY SECTORS OF ECONOMY IN THE REGION There are about 290 industrial enterprises in the Kherson region. The following economic activities dominate in sales of industrial products: manufacturing of food, beverages, supplying of electricity, gas, steam and conditioned air, mechanical engineering. EXPORT/IMPORT, COUNTRIES, BALANCE In 2012, the companies of the Kherson region carried out foreign trade operations with 111 countries. 10 Merchandise exports volume amounted to 328.5 mln USD, merchandise imports amounted to 206.6 mln USD. Black ink of foreign merchandise trade was 121.8 mln USD. In particular, nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery – 25.9%, electric machinery – 9.2% - chemical and allied products – 13.3% of the total volume - prepared foods – 8.3% of the total volume Compared to 2011 the volume of wholesale and retain trade services; trade in transport facilities; maintenance services increased by 3.6 times. Volume of direct foreign investment (stock capital) contributed from the beginning of investing period as of December 31, 2012 amounted to 245.2 mln USD. Investment was obtained from 46 countries. Success stories Project’s specifics Project’s initiator Information on initiator Chumak CJSC is a joint Ukrainian-Swedish company which was founded in 1996 through the merger of several canneries of the region; it is Ukraine's leading manufacturer of ketchup, mayonnaise, sauces, tomato paste, sunflower oil, canned fruits and vegetables. Chumak CJSC (Sweden-Ukraine) The company exports the largest share of its products. For a decade of work more than 25 mln. USD was attracted in the development of the company. This is a striking example of the successful combination of natural opportunities, the use of human and financial resources. Freedom Farm International CJSC was founded at the basis of 100% foreign investment in agroindustrial complex of Kherson region. Freedom Farm International CJSC (Ukraine, USA) The company has 11 ha of land at its disposal. Early grain crop yield is 40-45 centner/ha, corn – 100 centner/ha of dry corn, soybeans – 35-40 centner/ha. In the pig breeding the fodder conversion 2.8-3.0 and animal slaughter weight of 110-115 kg for 185-195 days is achieved by maximizing the use of advances in genetics, feeding and keeping of animals. The enterprise increased its capacity by 2 times for 3 recent years. The enterprise bought dozens of units of equipment, grain elevator, Frehat irrigation system for 4,110 ha, livestock breeding complex. The own workshop for combined fodder production was put into operation. It is planned to 13 complete reconstruction of a livestock breeding complex that would allow keeping up to 8,000 pigs at the same time. Yuzhenerhomash LLC manufactures electrical engines, generators, motors for coal mining, chemical industry and other industrial sectors. • Yuzhenerhomash LLC About 5 mln USD was invested into the (Ukraine) development of the enterprise. Maharishi Vedic Organic Agricultural Enterprise LLC and Vishva Ananda LLC grow grain crops, leguminous plants and medical plants Maharishi Vedic Organic Agricultural Enterprise LLC, Vishva Ananda LLC (Great Britain) Over 10 mln USD was invested by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The land of 36.8 thousand ha is held on lease in Kherson region. Rodych Milk Plant CJSC was founded in 2001. It manufactures products of whole milk (Rodych TM and Veselyi Pastushok TM) which is the best in quality competitions conducted by the National Association of Milk Producers of Ukraine. Danone (France) New French equipment is installed, over 200 jobs are created. Local primary products are used. Windcraft Ukraine LLC is a company dealing with development and investing into wind energy projects in Ukraine. Windcraft (Sweden) The construction of the first standard wind power plant with the capacity of 9 MW is completed, energy is being generated. Wind industrial park is connected to 35 kW line of the national power network. This is the first of its kind installation of Vestas VI12 wind turbine with the capacity of 3 MW in Ukraine. Green team LLC deals with growing, processing and refrigerator storage of vegetables in the advanced vegetable storage facility applying latest technologies and international experience. Green Team (Sweden) The company invested more than 40 mln. USD into new technologies of agriculture, built a super modern warehouse with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes of refrigerator storage of vegetables and for their processing, i.e. packaging, sorting, cleaning and polishing. 1.8. Transport and communications The are of Kherson region is a centre of international economic and transport links which is crossed by rail mains, highways and pipelines. MAJOR MOTORWAYS The total length of all the motor roads is over 5 thousand km (transportation by motor transport is carried out by 300 haulers). National highways M-14 Odesa-Mariupol-Novoazovsk and M-24 Kherson-Krasnoperekopsk-Simferopol (E-58 and E-97 respectively according to European classification). The are of Kherson region is crossed by transit road transport corridors: - Eurasian transport corridor Odessa - Mykolaiv - Kherson - Kerch - Black Sea highway Reni - Izmail - Odesa - Mykolaiv - Kherson - Berdiansk - Rostov - motor ferry Zonguldak (Turkey) - Skadovsk - Kherson - Mykolaiv - Odesa. 14 RAILWAY NETWORK Over 900 km railway lines run across the area of the region. The rail transport annually transports over 5 mln t of cargo and over 3 mln passengers. AIRPORTS The airfield has paved runway of 2,500 m long and 42 m wide, main and auxiliary taxi tracks, radio-technical facilities complex (radio navigation), flight support facilities, allowing receiving aircrafts of the following types: Boeing-737, Airbus-319/320/321, ÒU-154, ÒU-134, Yak-42, An-24/26/12/148, and helicopters of all types. BUS TERMINALS In the city of Kherson there is a Central bus terminal for international and intercity passenger service, and a suburban bus station for passenger service mainly within the region. There are also bus terminals in each regional centre. Bus communication covers all settlements of the region. Kherson Sea Commercial Port is one of the oldest in the south of Ukraine (founded over 200 years ago) with year-round navigation and freight turnover of more than 3 mln t per year (600 ships are handled annually in the port). LOGISTIC CENTRES In 2011 Green Team LLC in Kakhovka started construction of logistics centre with storage facility to store fresh vegetables and fruit. The process of making land inventory for the location of logistics centres is under the way. TRANSPORT MAP 15 • 1.9. Socio-cultural sphere MAJOR HEALTH CARE INSTITUTIONS There are 495 hospitals in Kherson region, including 379 first-aid station. CULTURE, SPORT, ÒOURISM In the region there are 6 museums, 471 library, 442 clubs, dolphinarium. Major leisure and recreation spots Name 16 Description Kherson Museum of Local History (Kherson, Soborna (Lenin) St., 9) Regional local history museum, the largest collection of materials, evidence and items of history and culture of Kherson region; it is one of the most famous and invaluable museum treasures of southern Ukraine. It was established in 1963 on the basis of Kherson Archaeological Museum of Antiquities, founded in 1860 by V. Hoshkevych composed of his own findings of excavations in Kherson region. Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre named after M. Kulish (Kherson, Horkyi St., 7) The professional theatre was opened in 1889. In 1936, the troupe of young Odessa mobile theatre for young workers, graduates of drama school and individual actors of Kherson theatres organized Kherson Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre. In 1990, Kherson theatre was named after the famous Ukrainian dramatist Mykola Hurovych Kulish. In 2005, the theatre has gained academic status. Yuvileinyi Cinema and Concert Hall (Kherson, Perekopska St., 13) Yuvileinyi Cinema was built as a concert hall with the original architectural design in 1970 for film premières, festivals, presentations and exhibitions. Fabryka Shopping and Entertainment Centre (Kherson, Zalaegerszeg St., 18) The project is implemented on the basis of industrial production, namely the reconstruction of Kherson Cotton Mill. The centre encloses shops, coffee bar, fitness club (with an area of 4,000 m² with 3 swimming pools and SPA-zone), bowling, rollerdrome, cinema with 6 showing rooms, carting, children's playground, table tennis, ice skating, ski club. Akvarel Skadovsk Dolphinarium (Skadovsk, Popovych St., 2-å) Skadovsk dolphinarium is a cultural, educational and therapeutic centre that offers a wide range of services entertainment program apart. In addition, there is an entertaining place within Dolphinarium's area. Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve named after F.E. Pfalz-Fein. Askania zoo is known by its significant advances in breeding of rare and wild ungulates and birds in captivity, their hybridization and domestication. It has unique collection of wild animals brought from different zoogeographical regions of the world. Ungulates dominate in-Askania Nova – antelopes, zebras, deers, bisons, fossil bisons, aurochs, Przewalski's horses and others, as well as birds – swans, pheasants, African ostriches, South American nandus and Australian emus, which are acclimatized and domesticated. MUSEUMS Kherson Regional Local History museum is one of the best in southern Ukraine; it is a museum that contains the main exhibit of local history. Its collection numbers about 150,000 exhibits. The museum is a scientific consulting and methodological centre for local history and museum organization issues. Kherson Regional Art Museum named after O.O. Shovkunenko is one of the main symbols of the city throughout its history. Art museum's collection numbers over 10,000 exhibits and is one of the most interesting museum collections of Ukraine. Here are the works of Ukrainian and foreign painting, drawing, sculpture, decorative arts, ranging from samples of Russian icon painting of XVII century to the works of contemporary artists of Kherson region. NATURAL RESERVES In the Kherson region there are 79 protected sites with a total area of 272.7 thousand ha accounting for 9.67% of the total area of the region. Natural reserve fund of Kherson region numbers the following categories of areas and sites: Askania Nova Biosphere Reserve, total area – 33,307.6 ha, and Black Sea Biosphere Reserve, total area – 109,254.8 ha (in Kherson region 106,513.8 ha), including conservation area – 70,509 ha; National Natural Parks: Azovo-Sivashskyi, the total area – 52,154 ha, Dzharylhatskyi, total area – 10,000 ha, Oleshkivski Pisky, total area – 8,020.36 ha; 1 national arboretum park – Askania Nova, total area – 183.2 ha; 7 national preserves and 13 local preserves; 30 natural memorials; 13 local parks-memorials of landscape design, total area – 173.34 ha; 10 reserve holes with the total area of 942 ha. SANATORIUMS Due to its natural and climatic characteristics Kherson region has a variety of recreational establishments of sanatorium-preventorium type. Sulphide-silt mud and sodium chloride brine of Soliane Lake, as well as in the coastal zone of the Black and Azov Seas, sanatoriums and children's health-improving camps, boarding houses are notable for the therapeutic effect. Hopry Sanatorium is the most famous one – it is a balneological resort located in the city of Hola Prystan which is widely known in Ukraine for infertility treatment. It also provides treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, skin diseases and so on.
