Crown Prince of Kuwait in Munich
Nr. 2 Dezember 2013
Treatment of Libyan patients
In the first six months of 2013, Europe Health
supported hundreds of Libyan patients in several
cities in Germany.
Europe Health had therefore agreed with the
Ministries of Libya, to accompany the patient in
Germany and to take care of their needs and to
organize the stay.
These patients continue to suffer from the
consequences of violations of the Revolution in
2011, especially gunshot wounds to the shoulder,
leg, abdomen and upper arm, burns, brain and
nerve injuries.
The Crown Prince of Kuwait, H.E. Crown Prince
Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, was
successfully treated in Munich in May 2013. The
sister organization of Europe Health, Seralux
GmbH (www.seralux.com), was responsible
to organize the stay and the logistical needs of
the Crown Prince and his entourage. We wish
Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah
speedy recovery and thank him for his trust in our
organizations.
Due to the intensive support by the staff of
Europe Health and the outstanding medical care
in German hospitals, all patients –which where
aged between 17-28 years - could be treated well
and are now back home .
Seralux GmbH is one of the first addresses in
Germany and specialized in providing limousines,
drivers and hotel concierge service for highranking people from the Arab countries as well
as Russia and the CIS countries who come for
medical treatment in particular to Germany.
Since 2005 we are supporting VIP´s from the Gulf
countries.

Europe Health Statistics: Number of patients
In the first half of 2013 Europe Health again
recorded an increase in the number of patients
cared for. In over 20 hospitals in Germany patients
from the Arabic-and Russian-speaking countries
where supported and therefore we increased
20% compared to the previous year.
The majority of additional supervised over
1,000 outpatient cases (patient per practitioner)
in Germany come from the Arabic-speaking
countries.
These patients are average accompanied by
three people which are also all around supported
by Europe Health and Seralux.
Qatar
Approximately 2,000 patients, about 85% funded
by sponsors and 15% self-payers.
Patients from Arabic-speaking countries
Germany in figures - researched by Europe
Health
United Arab Emirates
Approximately 4,000 patients, many of them
(about 80%) are funded by sponsors, such as
the Abu Dhabi government, the Military, Sheikh
offices and so on.
Saudi-Arabia
Approximately 800 patients, 70% funded by
sponsors and 30% self-payers.
Kuwait
Approximately 2,000 patients, about 80% funded
by sponsors such as Ministry of Health or Kuwait
Oil Company (KOC), about 20% constitute the
so-called self-payers.

Libya
Approximately 1,500 patients, 80% financed by
the government, 20% funded by insurances (e.g.
BUPA) or so called self-payers.
Other Arab Countries:
Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, Yemen, Iraq,
Syria, and partially the above mentioned states,
where patients are not sent from an official site:
Approximately 10,000 patients (estimate)
which are to 95% self-payers. Many check-up
examinations. Financing by companies (e.g. for
top management), insurances (e.g. BUPA) and
others.
Oman
Therefore, 20,000 patients from Arabic
speaking countries travel to Germany for
medical treatment.
Approximately 300 patients, 90% funded
by sponsors and 10% self-payers. Rigorous
selection procedure for treatment abroad.
The political situation in the Arab countries
and their impact on medical tourism
Germany is still in many Arab patients a popular
destination when it comes to medical treatment.
It can be noted that, particularly in complex
diseases, such as neurological or oncological
diseases, hospitals in Germany (mainly in
Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and North RhineWestphalia) are preferred.
Bahrein
Approximately 200 patients, 95% funded by
sponsors, very strict selection process for
treatment abroad.
In essence, the patients come from the United
Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia,
Oman and Bahrain. Currently, there is the
special situation that a large number of patients
from Libya with not yet healed injuries from the
revolutionary period come to Germany.

The political upheaval in several Arab countries
for about two years has raised questions about
the extent to which these policy changes have an
impact on the medical tourism.
In our estimation, this particular upheaval in the
countries mentioned above will lead to more
patients in the coming years to Europe and
especially to Germany.

Arabic and Russian tourists in Munich, Berlin,
Germany
In 2012 140,000 (2011: 102,000) tourists from the
Arab Gulf States and 170,000 (2011: 135,000)
tourists from Russia visited Munich. Since
2004, the number of tourists increased to triple
or even to quadruple (see chart). Unfortunately
we cannot make a statement, which part of the
numbers show patients and which tourists. Here
we can only rely on our experience, which we had
described in our last newsletter.
In comparison, Berlin had 2012 28.000 tourists
from the Arab countries and 163,000 tourists
from Russia during the year.
In 2011, Germany welcomed 737.000 tourists
from Russia and 343,000 from the Arab Gulf
States.
©Hang Dinh / Shutterstock.com
This makes 30% of Arab tourists and 18% of
Russian tourists who visited the Bavarian capital
Munich, during their visit to Germany.
In the past, many patients went for medical
treatment to Arabic-speaking countries such as
Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
Due to the uncertain political situation in these
countries, these patients now prefer Europe and
there mainly Germany.
We expect that this situation will continue for
many years, and therefore we can expect a 20%
increase in patients in Germany.

Reports in the media about "rip-off of medical
tourists"
Lately there have been some reports on the critical
issue of Medical Tourism in different media. It was
for example also reported, «father sold his house
to enable treatment for his son and was ripped
off» or «hospitals bill double for foreign patients «,
«patient tractor», and so on.
Form our site we would like to state the following:
As in almost every industry there are unreliable
service providers in medical tourism who
were referred to in the press as «cheaters and
scammers.» Also, from our experience, there
are partially increased bills from hospitals and
doctors and so-called patient agents, which bill
a large sum of money for their so-called services
to the patients.
But due to the view which we have because
of our activities at many locations in Germany
like Berlin, Munich, Dusseldorf, Heidelberg,
Nuremberg, Stuttgart, etc., we can confirm that
the majority of hospitals and doctors, as well as
most of the service providers, and in particular
the supporting persons work very seriously and
properly. In our experience the reporting where
about exemptions; but of course, this exemptions
need to be addressed and remedied.
There is also a further discussion of the manner
of reckoning the extra expense. Here, different
approaches have been established. In addition,
there are also different views on the right billing
methods and the fees of the external services.
This discussion has nothing to do with the
question of seriousness.
Our overall conclusion is that medical treatment
in Germany is highly appreciated by patients
from abroad and the official authorities of
foreign countries (health consulates, embassies,
ministries).
In particular, the representatives of the Arab
countries specify the accounting terms with the
German hospitals.
On the other hand, we also recognize an
increasing interest in the topic of medical tourism
in German hospitals, hotels, retail industry, etc.
This type of tourism turns about 500 million
Nr. 2 November 2013
euros sales per year in Germany. Therefore, it is
of course important that unreliable behavior is
turned off, but it is very important to not give the
impression that unreliable behavior is the norm in
this industry.

small fair, but met with great interest of the

in the service offers of Europe Health in medical
tourism during the exhibition days. Europe Health
will therefore take part at this fair in 2014 again.
Preview
Also in 2014 we will again participate in selected
