Total handling in the Port of Duisburg, including the private works ports, gained 10 per cent to 125.6 million in 2011. Of this 64 Million t was accounted for by duisport Group ports, which reached a new record with a plus of 18 per cent and a share of over 50 per cent for the first time. With total output of around 149 million euros, a slight rise on the previous year, the result before taxes on income improved by 20 per cent to 10.5 million euros. “The good total output and the above average increase in goods handling impressively prove the dynamic development of the location. In 2011 we were able to realize the best result in the history of the Port of Duisburg,” said Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, at the annual press conference on March 22, 2012. (dü) Revenue relevant ship and rail handling in the duisport Group’s ports also achieved an excellent result of 33 Million t. The increase of ship handling by 20 per cent to 17 Million t is particularly pleasing. Rail handling grew by 14 per cent to 16 million t. Coal, iron and steel as well as chemicals developed disproportionately positively. Containers, the most important goods segment, achieved very pleasing growth with a plus of 10 per cent to reach 2.5 million TEU. “Reaching this new record in 2012 is our goal, of course. However, the overall economic situation and global weakening tendencies will not make it easy,” said Erich Staake. This extremely positive development is being taken into account by the further development and new construction of important infra- and suprastructure projects in the Port of Duisburg. In addition to a new KV terminal, which the duisport Group will complete in Hohenbudberg in the south of the logport site by the end of the year, the DB Schenker subsidiary RBH will significantly expand its capacities on the Kohleinsel in the Port of Duisburg by 2014. Furthermore, Deutsche Bahn is building the first of two mega hubs in Germany for combined transport in the north of the Port of Duisburg. “These strategic course settings are creating excellent condi- tions for future growth in goods transport,” said Erich Staake. The intermodal logistics turntable Duisburg also impressively proved its attractiveness for companies wishing to relocate last year. Thus the duisport Group built a further logistics complex for Kühne + Nagel on one of the last undeveloped plots in logport I, where up to three halls and an office building with a total of 22,000 m² hall space will emerge by the end of July 2012. Thus Kühne + Nagel is expanding its location in the Port of Duisburg to 190,000 m² of hall space and is developing Duisburg into its most important location worldwide. balance 2011 “The variety of customers is continually growing,” enthused Erich Staake. “With the location of the subsidiary of an important corporation from Saudi Arabia on the Mercatorinsel we are intensifying our customer connections in the Arab world.” Regional activities have ever stronger effects With growth of 10 per cent in containers and 18 per cent overall, duisport was well over the planned figures for the first time with a plus of 5 to 6 per cent for 2011, enthused Staake. However, Europe’s most important hinterland hub is also growing much quicker than the seaports Rotterdam and Antwerp in the current year. Staake sees the reasons for this well above average expansion to be organic growth among the companies located in the port, additional quantities from businesses that have relocated there and the duisport Group’s own activities in packing logistics, heavy cargo and project logistics and organizing new train connections in combined transport. “The proportion of maritime goods in total volumes is only 50 per cent today, so that the strong growth of regionally related activities has correspondingly larger effects,” said Staake, explaining the background. He continued that it was also pleasing that at 20 per cent the ship area had grown stronger than rail transport for the first time. Staake sees the causes for this to be firstly, stronger growth in mineral oil products, chemicals, imported coal, ores and steel products and secondly, in the new transport quantities for inland waterways from packing logistics as well as heavy cargo and project logistics. “duisport packing logistics new logistics centre is humming and we have almost daily departures to the seaports – transport quantities that have mainly been taken off both the roads and rails onto ships. It is a similar story in heavy cargo and project loading, which is handled in the Heavylift Terminal Duisburg,” said Staake. Most important German inland coal hub “As what was once Germany’s largest coal export port, Duisburg has also completed a THE PORT duisport magazine June 2012 turnaround in coal, its traditional product,” reported Staake. Eight handling businesses supply power stations and the steel industry with this fuel, which is primarily imported from South Africa, Poland, Columbia, Australia and China today. “Thus Duisburg is the most important inland hub in Germany, which is why further investments are being made in its development,” enthused Staake. In Staake’s opinion chemicals will create further growth impulses in future: “The chemical industry is building new locations worldwide whose products are later refined in Germany. With the location of the most important European chemical forwarders at locations in Duisburg in the past few years, the region has become a leading service centre for chemical companies based on the Lower Rhine and in the Ruhr region.” The Port of Duisburg Group is planning to invest around 100 million euros in developing its business in the period 2012 to 2014. “As before we see very positive perspectives in our logistics business fields and want to grow faster than the market, as we have up to now,” concluded Erich Staake. New start in the Ruhr region: industry and logistics take stock The Ruhr region, Germany’s largest industrial region, has accomplished a structural change away from mining and steel to the modern. More and more companies are joining the beacons with the illustrious names and great traditions. They are convinced by the advantages of a location in the Ruhr metropolis in the middle of the heart of Europe. The Initiativkreis Ruhr is taking this opportunity to hold an event with top class attendees in Düsseldorf at the beginning of September. (krum) “NRW location advantage: industry and logistics – partners with perspectives“ is the subject of the congress, which the Initiativkreis is organizing together with the business newspaper “Handelsblatt” in the hotel “Maritim” at Düsseldorf Airport on September 5 and 6. The speakers and discussion participants will include top managers such as Dr. Johannes Teyssen (E.ON), Dr. Klaus Engel (Evonik), Karl Gernandt (Kühne + Nagel) and Bernd Tönjes (RAG). The leading politicians whose agreement to attend is still hoped for by the organizers include the re-elected NRW Premier Hannelore Kraft (SPD). “With this event we want to document how industry, logistics service providers and science have created an expert, creative mechanism in the Ruhr metropolis that offers the best conditions for corporate success in a globalized world,” explained Erich Staake, head of the Executive Board of Duisburger Hafen AG and Chairman of the Logistics Working Group in the Initiativkreis Ruhr. Cost effective efficiency, flexible reactions to changes, absolute safety for people and cargo, optimized ecology despite rising transport output – these, according to Staake, are the challenges of the new start in the Ruhr region. He added that precisely the industrial heart of the Federal State NRW offered optimal conditions for the successful interplay of industrial processes and logistics services with its outstanding infrastructure, the waterways and tracks in particular. The congress participants, who are expected from throughout Germany, will deal with aspects such as division of labor, globalization, sustainability and digitalization in various discussion rounds. First hand experiences and assessments will be presented. To start, the Swiss scientist Dr. Bertrand Piccard will present his vision of flying using only the power of the sun. His aircraft prototype has not only been in the air for hours but day and night too. 5 duisport magazine June 2012 THE PORT São Paulo-Santos logistics corridor Photo: Mischke-Perolafilmes.de duisport prepares concept for the São Paulo Handover of the Management Summary to Brazilian President Rousseff In March 2011 an agreement was signed between Duisburger Hafen AG and the Brazilian ports ministry to support the government to prepare a logistics concept for the São Paulo-Santos logistics corridor. This logistics corridor connects the port city Santos with the Serra do Mar plateau and the mega city São Paulo. Prior to signing the agreement mutual consultations were held over a long period in Duisburg and Brazil. (jfr) With nearly 420,000 inhabitants the city of Santos is the most important port city in Latin America and the administrative centre of the metropolitan region Baixada Santista. In goods handling terms the port is the largest port in Brazil and in Latin America. In 2010 the port was able to post container traffic of 2.72 million TEU and total handling of 96 million t. In comparison, duisport recorded container handling of 2.25 million TEU and total handling of 54 million t in 2010. The São Paulo-Santos logistics corridor is traversed by two highways and two railway routes, which connect the port city Santos with the plateau. Capacity bottlenecks already occur today on the road and rail infrastructure. Thus, for example, one of the highway connections toward Santos is closed to truck traffic due to the steep incline. The rail infrastructure is capable of development because there are some onetrack sections that prevent efficient flows of goods. The future development of container and tonnage traffic will further intensify the problems. An optimistic scenario foresees that the number of contain- ers and general tonnage will treble in the next 12 years. Under these conditions an optimization of the processes within the port and efficient provision of the port of Santos and the hinterland is necessary. Photo: www.wikimedia.org 6 A container ship leaves the port of Santos São Paulo-Santos logistics corridor THE PORT duisport magazine June 2012 Container terminal of the Grupo Libra the logistics corridor. The central challenge can be seen as the removal of the capacity bottlenecks of the logistics corridor’s infrastructure and thus an optimal connection between the port and the hinterland. In Foto: www.beachco.com≠ duisport was therefore commissioned as a central consultant and overall coordinator of the “São Paulo-Santos Logistics Corridor Program”. The task was to develop a central logistics and infrastructure concept for the heavily utilized transport corridor São Paulo-Santos. The main focus here was the connection between the port of Santos and the Serra do Mar plateau as well as the processes in the port of Santos itself. duisport coordinated numerous individual studies and projects on behalf of the Brazilian government and evaluated the optimization potential for efficient transport and goods flows between the port of Santos and the São Paulo metropolitan area in the hinterland. The aim of the concept developed was ensuring effective supply to and from the port of Santos and the São Paulo metropolitan area. Reference models for the Brazilian government’s assignment to develop the logistics and infra- Photo: www.wikimedia.org -Santos logistics corridor Santos Brazil container terminal structure concept were the successful development of the Duisburg port into a European hinterland hub and the successful implementation of the logport project. duisport was able to contribute its expertise in planning and building ports and terminals here as well as in developing a logistics hub for the hinterland. addition, the networking of the terminals and facilities of the port is not currently sufficient. An additional challenge for the port of Santos is optimizing passenger and goods transport on the roads. Reducing high logistics costs is an additional challenge for the port in order to be able to compete with other ports. Supplying the mega city São Paulo, which is at an elevation of 800 m above sea level, and the hinterland set a great challenge for the port’s infra- and suprastructure and for the transport infrastructure of The concept prepared by duisport foresees three central solution proposals. To optimize the São Paulo-Santos logistics corridor extensive investments in the existing infrastructure are necessary. Assuming the expected container and tonnage traffic, sea capacity will be increased through state and private investments. Thus by implementing measures such as building and expanding the terminal, deepening the navigation channel and increasing the number of berths extra capacity will be made available in the port. In order to be able to master this rise in capacity investments will also be made in the road and rail infrastructure. Extensive investments by the state of São Paulo and by infrastructure operators and logistics stakeholders are foreseen. However, these will not be enough to remove the bottlenecks. By extending and building, if necessary, capacities in the road and rail infrastructure can be decisively increased. Because development and new construction is only possible to a highly limited extent due to the geographical conditions it is necessary to optimize the existing systems. This can be made possible by using a dynamic traffic guidance system. To relieve the port of Santos logistics activities should be relocated to the hinterland by building logistics centers. The Management Summary was handed over to the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, by the Chief Executive of Duisburger Hafen AG, Erich Staake, on March 6, 2012. The handover took place on the occasion of a reception of the Executive Committee of the BDI Brazil Board at CeBIT in Hanover. 7 8 duisport magazine June 2012 THE PORT IHK congress Congress at the Zollverein in Essen NRW logistics providers sound the alarm du Around 280 participants in discussion at the IHK NRW Transport Congress in Essen. Logistics offers great opportunities and has now become the third most important sector in Germany with enormous growth potential. However, the pre-condition for realizing this is infrastructure that works and not only NRW is a long way from this. This was the unanimous warning from experts from business, science, administration and politics at a recent congress of the Association of the North Rhine Wesphalian Chamber of Trades and Industry. Unanimity that did not bring the experts a single step closer toward answering the event’s motto: “More transport, less money? – Who will pay for tomorrow’s transport routes?” (frön) While the economy is currently growing despite all the inconveniences and transport is increasing, logistics is already breaching new limits every day now. Growth of 60 per cent and more until 2025 could bring about the collapse of not just the roads, as the transport route with the highest proportion. For this reason developing infrastructure, particularly in NRW, the strongest federal state economically and thus in transport too, is urgently required, warned Paul Bauwens-Adenauer, President of the IHK NRW, Düsseldorf. “Mobility is increasingly becoming a bottleneck factor although it is the basis of prosperity, jobs and the industrial location.” In addition to the lack of funds, increasing resistance in society to infrastructure measures posed another problem. In this connection he criticized the partly decades long planning periods as “no longer acceptable“, because it jeopardized acceptance among the population. As a solution the President proposed changing the allocation formula for public funds, selecting efficiency and benefits instead of a justice formula as the basis. Analogous to the EU he proposed that a core network is defined. “But even without a redesign of the allocation formula it is the task of the federal states to make things ready for construction. There is still much to be done here in NRW too.” Priorities have to be set “We want merchandise and goods to move quickly from A to B and not get stuck in traffic jams. At the same time it is our aim to consolidate the budget and maintain budgetary rigor. Somehow that does not go together. Therefore we have to set priorities. Not everything that seems desirable is realizable,“ said Rainer Bomba, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport. Accordingly Minister Ramsauer had made it clear that maintenance had priority over new construction and development. In addition, combining the various modes of transport was necessary. The wishes of the federal states with costbenefit factors had been harmonized in IHK congress THE PORT duisport magazine June 2012 e to the lack of infrastructure the ministry on the revision of the investment framework plan. The upcoming federal transport routes plan also had to meet challenges, prioritize, and prepare corresponding cost-benefit accounts. "But one thing is clear. Without raising expenditure it definitely will not happen," admitted the State Secretary. "We have to follow new paths for this, paths that are currently being intensively created." He could also envisage PPP models and an extension of road tolls. Working groups were already busy with the latter issue. But research and development will also be improved. "Germany is staying transport and transit country number 1“, said Bombas Conclusion: “We will not only maintain infrastructure, but also expand and develop it in a targeted manner, we will develop new financing models and we will look for new methods in research and development.” Maintenance before development NRW’s transport minister Harry K. Voigtsberger emphasized that the roads were in different areas of responsibility. “Funding for this purpose is very different. The leeway for action is correspondingly different as well. Road users have very little understanding for this because they only perceive the road." Participants in the podium discussion from left: Rainer Bomba, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, Ekhart Maatz, Head of the Road Infrastructure and Road Transport Department in the Ministry of Economics, Energy, Building, Living and Transport of the federal state of NRW, Jens Fiege, member of the board of Fiege Stiftung & Co. KG, Greven, Ocke Hamann, transport expert of the Lower Rhine IHK and Transport Spokesman for the IHKs in NRW, Andreas Scharf, director of Verkehrsinfrastrukturfinanzierungsgesellschaft mbH, Berlin. For the federal state the priority was also retaining the existing substance. “Important issues such as development or closing gaps can only come afterwards.” Accordingly, at the discussion of the federal transport routes plan the federal state had reported that the federal state with the highest population needed a large share of the funds. He described the looming reduction in overall funds in this connection as dramatic. Jens Fiege, member of the board of Fiege Stiftung & Co. KG, Greven, reported very insistently what traffic loads mean for logistics companies. He set a figure of around two million euros a year as the additional costs caused by the lack of an autobahn connection at the goods transport centre in Bremen for his company alone. NRW IHK transport expert Ocke Hamann, from the Lower Rhine IHK, Duisburg (which organized the congress), made clear how close the existing system already was to its limits. “If we see that a slight increase in traffic from 2009 to 2011 had the effect of raising traffic jams by 35 per cent, it shows that the road system is operating very close to its capacity limits. And we have the same effect on the rails." But at the same time you had to make a realistic estimate of the costs to avoid the partly immense increases. The experts are unanimous: combining modes of transport and thus the ports will be more important in future to avoid a possible collapse. 9 10 duisport magazine June 2012 THE PORT ISPS facilities Duisburg, more than just a port in the hinterland ISPS facilities – an essential component in s If the supply chain is considered to be a global transport chain – sea or air freight – then the word security inevitably comes up. duisport, the largest inland port in the world, currently has 38 ISPS facilities, which can interact with up to 2,000 sea-going ships p.a. Almost all types of freight that are intended for international transport are processed securely and efficiently in these facilities. Of course this also includes goods carried on other modes of transport. ISPS certification of the port complex is a condition for handling ISPS certified ships; such ships would lose their entitlement to enter overseas ports if they called at non-ISPS code certified facilities. The first certification for a sea-going ship waiting area on the Rhine was received by duisport at the beginning of 2008 – without statutory or any other requirements! (mf) The most important challenge for operators of ISPS facilities and the port is meeting the extensive requirements of ISPS certification while taking efficient process design into account. duisport holds investments in terminals that successfully implement this, such as the HTD Heavylift Terminal, a trimodal terminal in the Außenhafen with heavy cargo handling capacities of up to 500 t. Handling, storage and final assembly of individual components or packing and shipping complete plants are all part of the service portfolio. There are also trimodal ISPS terminals on logport. Container transports, accelerated truck processing through an innovative tour management system etc. are carried out reliably, quickly and securely. The ISPS code INTERNATIONAL SHIP AND PORT FACILITY SECURITY CODE consists of an extensive package of measures to prevent dangers to sea-going ships, port facilities and ports. In this manner internationally uniform preventative measures to increase danger prevention on sea-going ships in international transport are installed as well as in the ports that handle them to prevent terrorist attacks. In 2002 the IMO (International Maritime Organization) adopted Appendix IX-2 (ISPS-Code) as a supplement to the SOLAS international convention for the SAFETY OF LIFE AT SEA). The scope was extended to land facilities in order to prevent dangers of unauthorized access to sea-going ships and their freight coming from the land. In 2005 EU Directive 2005/65/EC to increase danger prevention on sea-going ships, port facilities and ports came into effect. SAFETY went on land and became SECURITY ISPS facility operators have to make considerable investments in security to satisfy the requirements of the ISPS code. In addition, port and port facility operators each have to have a danger prevention ISPS facilities THE PORT duisport magazine June 2012 ecuring the supply chain plan certified on the basis of a risk analysis. Depending on the number of sea-going ships processed extensive measures to attain and maintain this status have to be implemented (both structural and also monitoring and access control measures). In every case the certification of the port facility requires a trained Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO), who implements and supports security regulations and serves as an interface between sea-going ships, ISPS facilities and government authorities, including six duisport employees who among others support tenants in certification. The security of the port, its employees and the goods entrusted to it have the highest priority. The security standards set, such as changing the infrastructure and staff utilization, are intended to guarantee the protection and monitoring of sea-going ships and the interfaces affected (terminals, sea-going ships, other ships). Port facilities, previously freely accessible to practically everyone, have to be hermetically sealed. The implementation of security measures has fortunately led to a decline in property theft and increased protection of goods – to the benefit of all logistics stakeholders. Elaborate control measures are no longer necessary in every step of the supply chain. Effort is restricted to measures that maintain security status i.e. lower friction Numerous well known companies operate ISPS facilities in Duisburg (including ALS, DeCeTe, DIT, D3T, Haeger & Schmidt, Rhenus Scharrer, RRT). losses. Although firm controls – with government authorities under some circumstances – are necessary in cases of suspicion (manipulation, broken seals etc.) the flow of goods is not held up unnecessarily. A transport chain can only be as secure as its weakest link! Because the structure of transport chains in international trade is a complex network of logistics stakeholders, port facility operators, especially those of ISPS facilities (as well as duisport as a logistics turntable in Europe) make a number of demands. They keep handling and storage as secure as necessary using as little effort as possible. Here too duisport expertly makes an outstanding contribution to the security and efficiency of the supply chain and strengthens the NRW location in international competition. 11 12 duisport magazine June 2012 NETWORKING direct connection Halkali Duisburg moves closer to Turkey New direct rail connection from the port to Moskva Rotterdam Antwerpen Zeebrugge Brest DUISBURG Frankfurt Slawkow Lovosice Kosice Wien Bratislava Sopron Budapest Ljubljana Curtici (Arad) Bradu de Sus Istanbul (Halkali) Thessaloniki Athen An interview with Heiko Rumfeld, Member of the Management Board of duisport agency GmbH, the transport logistics subsidiary of the duisport Group. Mr Rumfeld, last year the duisport Group was at the Logitrans trade fair (December 8 to 10) in Istanbul for the first time. What caused you to do this? Turkey is a growth market of the future, the door to the Middle East and Asia so to speak. As one of the largest logistics turntables in Central Europe, the Port of Duisburg simply has to be present there and position itself in Turkey. Therefore we were on site with our own, large stand in Hall 9. We’ll also be there at Logitrans 2012 (November 15 to 17). gary. The shuttle train runs four times a week. It needs 6 days for a one way trip. It arrives at the DIT Container Terminal in the port. The operator of the train link is Inter Ferry Boats (IFB), a subsidiary of SNCB Logistics and thus Belgian Railways, which uses the brand IFB East. So how did the train start off and how has it gone from there? What was the response like? Very good! Our new, public rail connection between the Port of Duisburg and Halkali near Istanbul was a central issue of the discussions on the stand above all. So what are you offering there that’s new? Heiko Rumfeld shows the way. Alongside an existing rail connection via Ljubljana to Halkali that has already existed for a long time, since 2011 there has been a direct connection between the Port of Duisburg to Halkali via Sopron in Hun- The train is very well utilized. Primarily continental and less maritime loads are transported, especially everyday consumer goods and electronic products. So we want to develop and intensify the connection. Above all we want to raise the frequency and offer more departures per day. Why does the train go to Duisburg of all places? Because the journey is not yet over in Duisburg (laughs). Duisburg is an ideal turntable for distributing goods in com- direct connection Halkali NETWORKING duisport magazine June 2012 Halkali near Istanbul Why is this such a great success? Turkish Economy The Turkish economy is booming. Double digit growth rates are a cause for optimism among logistics companies. The most important trade partners are the European Union, Germany and Russia. Turkey is seen as the gateway to the East. Over a fifth of exports now go to this region, although the “Arab Spring” caused a slump. But companies hope to make up for this soon. At around USD 5 billion, logis- bined transport in Central Europe. There are not only direct connections by rail in the Ruhr region and beyond to as far away as Moscow, but also, for example, to the Belgian seaports Antwerp and Zeebrugge. Around 30 per cent of the goods that come by train from Turkey currently continue toward the western ports. In Duisburg we offer a connection to an international logistics network, so to speak. What makes you so confident? In the face of the dynamic economic development on the Bosporus there is enormous potential for growth in intermodal transport. Many Turkish forwarders that visited us on the stand want to send a large part of their loads by rail in future. The talk is of over 20 per cent. tics branch sales are rather low measured against the potential of the sector. About 400,000 people work in the sector and with over 40,000 vehicles the Turkish truck fleet is the largest in the whole of Europe. As before, the most important engines of the Turkish economy are the textiles and automotive industries. Source: German-Turkish Chamber of Industry and Commerce Logitrans 2011 The new cooperation between Messe München and the Turkish trade fair organizer Eko Fair has already paid off. In comparison with the previous year the number of exhibitors almost doubled to 207. More international exhibitors came in particular, their proportion increasing to over 50 per cent. Companies from 24 (13 in the previous year) countries presented themselves in two halls on the Expo trade fair site in Istanbul over three days (from December 8 to 10, 2011). Nearly 12,000 visitors or 2300 more than in the previous year were counted. Around a fifth of them came from abroad. Most exhibitors came from Turkey, Italy, Germany, Latvia and Austria. The next Logitrans is taking place in Istanbul from November 15 to 17, 2012. Source: Messe München For this you have to know that Turkey is traditionally a truck market. Up to now Turkey traffic has rolled on the roads almost exclusively, either directly or via Italian ports such as Triest – with the well known consequences for the environment and traffic. With the new train connection we will offer a reliable and highly frequent alternative to truck and feeder traffic in future. This alone is already an innovation in Turkey traffic. There too changing to environmentally friendly modes of transport is an ever stronger sales argument. Does the train also help to attract new investors from Turkey to Duisburg? That’s what we assume. The direct connection to Turkey will make the Duisburg location and the Ruhr region even more interesting to investors. How many companies have already located in the port? Up to now in Gökbora and Mates there are two Turkish forwarders in the Port of Duisburg. Mates is already a customer of the new train. We are still in discussions with Gökbora. What was your personal impression of Turkey? Unfortunately I wasn't able to see much of Istanbul. But I was very impressed. You feel how lively and active life is there. The concept of this dialogue center was developed from three projects of the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr, the largest European logistics research project as part of the German government’s high tech strategy. duisport is a practical partner in the projects “Scientific further education in logistics”, “Organizational innovations with good governance in logistics networks”, “Integrated corporate social responsibility management in logistics networks” and supports the implementation of DIALOGistik Duisburg in harmony with the wishes of customer on site. (wen) DIALOGistik is a central contact point in the port intended to intensify existing cooperation in the port, make new contacts and strengthen the qualifications of personnel. The focus here is on the transfer between science and business, e.g. by networking companies with research institutions. On the one hand DIALOGistik provides committed students with business practice and on the other, companies’ needs for innovation are discussed with research partners. The perception of logistics as a career will be intensified in cooperation with Duisburg companies and regional schools, public authorities and organizations. In addition to developing a “Duisburg Port Community”, using synergy effects will be at the center of activities. For example, a survey was carried out by the University Duis- burg-Essen on the qualification needs at the Port of Duisburg. One result is the pilot implementation of a further education program for “multi-modal logistics” specialists for commercial and trade employees. Additional training needs will be realized after consultation with companies in cooperation with existing education institutions. DIALOGistik Duisburg INVESTIGATION duisport magazine June 2012 uisburg: DIALOGistik Duisburg In addition to planned working groups (including personnel in logistics), increasingly value oriented corporate responsibility and efficiently shaping logistic processes make up a further focal point of DIALOGistik. Small and medium sized enterprises in particular will be given help to act sustainably here, e.g. through sustainability checks, guidelines for analyzing stakeholder groups and training measures. The dialogue center program is starting: s*ULY Sustainability in Logistics s!UGUST Official Opening of DIALOGistik A program of events tailored to the needs of Duisburg companies will serve to create better exchanges on sector specific issues. The partners here are the DST Entwicklungszentrum für Schiffstechnik und Transportsysteme e.V. as the project leader, Duisburger Hafen AG, Dortmunder Hafen AG, the shipping line H&S Container Line GmbH and Meidericher Schiffswerft as the shipyard. The project was selected as part of the Logistik.NRW innovation competition in 2009 with a runtime until 2012. The most important results can already be presented shortly before the conclusion of the project. (gues) A barge train was developed to transport the containers, which optimally uses the inland waterway possibilities between Duisburg and Dortmund. The tug barges are relatively small and box shaped and their construction is as simple as possible. More barges can be coupled to form a barge train with a maximum length of 185 m. This results in a large transport capacity of up to 160 TEU when stacking two layers. The train is moved by two specially designed tugboats, one each at the rear and the head of the barge train. The barge train can maneuver perfectly in this configuration and the helmsman in the front tugboat has a field of vision that is not impaired by containers. Apart from the technical development organizational aspects will also decisively improve the efficiency of the system. In contrast to motorboats the tugboat does not have to wait in the port while the barges are loaded or unloaded but posi- tions the barges for unloading and can directly collect those that have already been dispatched. The barge train can also split in the Duisburg area so that each tugboat can head for the different terminals with some of the barges. What is impor- ,AYOUTOFPUSHERTUGSINCOMBINATIONWITHMEDIUMSIZEDANDSMALLPUSHINGUNITS RuhrCargo INVESTIGATION duisport magazine June 2012 land tant here is smooth integration into the working processes of the container terminal. In the opinion of terminal operators what is decisive here is that the barges made available can be dealt with in order without the tight deadlines that are typical for dealing with rail goods transport, for example. Here too a schedule with regular timing is considered to be necessary. The aim of the scheduling is to offer two complete round trips a week. For this purpose a round trip will take place on set weekdays within 48 hours. The tugboats will then be underway almost 24/7, but with changing crews. In contrast to large tugboats, on which there is complete accommodation on board, the crew at RUHRCARGO will leave the boat when shifts change and go home again. This should not be difficult to organize with the relatively short distances within the Ruhr region. With the system outlined here a small fleet of two tugboats and a corresponding number of barges will be in a position to transport approximately 10,000 containers a year between the Duisburg and Dortmund terminal. If the handling facilities there allow, it will also connect ports on the canal route. Approximately 50 boxes Test-drive of the pushing unit in a simulator per trip will be carried and distributed at this transport output so that with the right stowing empty containers and high-cube containers will be able to pass beneath the partly low canal bridges. It is also conceivable to offer container transport between the numerous Duisburg terminals. What will be decisive for the feasibility of RUHRCARGO is the costs situation of course. The costs of container transport currently calculated with RUHRCARGO are somewhat lower than the comparable costs of trucks or trains. Here around 25 per cent of the costs are incurred by the actual transport by ship, plus the advance carriage by truck and the handling costs. Additional benefits of RUHRCARGO are the considerable relief of the existing transport infrastructure and the verifiable reduction of emissions, particularly CO2. This concept has technically and organizationally proved the advantages inland waterways are in a position to provide. As soon as market demand emerges sustainable cost savings and traffic relief can be realized. 17 duisport magazine June 2012 PORTRAIT UnionStahl Organic growth success story continues UnionStahl has been successful in logport I 200 new jobs among others Photos: UnionStahl 18 “We’re bringing steel back to Rheinhausen,” a newspaper once wrote about UnionStahl. Ten years ago the company formed at the logport I location. At exactly the same place where the steelworks had ended production nine years earlier in 1993. And back then it promised what the team around the management board has honored. What’s more they have created about 200 new jobs in the past ten years. And the success story is continuing. (frön) Oliver Hillekamp, one of three directors, is aware of the location’s tradition. A Krupp rolling mill was once located in exactly the same place where the company halls stand today. “Former rolling mill workers turn up here all the time and ask if they can come in and take a quick look around,” reports the board member. A request that the 48 year old very rarely turns down. What the visitors then see amazes many of them. Today UnionStahl is an established steel plate warehouser with wide ranging prefabrication and processing for special plate applications. Now in eight halls on a site of around 75,000 m² the experts store and process plates with thicknesses from three to 450 mm. Over 40,000 tonnes of steel are available at the Duisburg location to be prefabricated precisely in accordance with the requirements of the company’s customers and then subsequently delivered. UnionStahl PORTRAIT duisport magazine June 2012 for ten years and has created UnionStahl mainly supplies the plates and the ready-to-install parts to purchasers from industrial customers ranging from plant and apparatus constructors, to mechanical engineers, up to crane and pipeline construction businesses. They partly come from the region but a not inconsiderable part of production goes abroad both within and outside Europe. This includes countries in Asia, South America and Africa. “This is related to the fact that we have an exceptionally, large warehouse with almost all specialties in the area of plate steel available,” says Hillekamp, revealing one of the secrets of the success of the Rheinhauseners. “But the main business as warehousers will classically always be in Germany.” Using the advantages of the location A business in which logistics plays a central role: “logport is an attractive location. We have a railroad connection and most deliveries are made on the tracks. Also the Rhine isn’t far away. In addition the majority of our clientele are in the Rhine-Ruhr region,” explains the director further. “From our central warehouse and prefabrication operation right here in Rheinhausen and also in Koprivnice we are in a position to offer a multi-facetted program of construction steel and boiler plate goods as well as consumable and highly durable goods in a complete range with short routes throughout Europe,” summarizes Hillekamp. “And with extensive stock levels UnionStahl is one of the few full range providers in the plate steel sector, with close connections to all European steel plate manufacturers.” tenth birthday it is intended to begin production in Halls 9 and 10. “We think it’s really charming to hand these halls over to use too in the 10th year,” smiles the director. “This wasn’t planned intentionally, it just happened. But we think it’s really nice anyway.” When the founders were looking for a suitable location they found a lunar landscape in Rheinhausen that was still almost deserted. An area with perspectives, however. Alongside the track connection already mentioned the necessary areas for possible future expansion were also available here. And these were urgently required – as quickly became clear. Because the original three hall bays have since grown to 8. And punctually on the Continual staff qualification and further education Around 200 people now work on the Europaallee, all new jobs as Hillekamp reports with justifiable pride. “We weren’t a relocation but a new start up. These jobs didn’t exist before.” As many as 500 people work for the group worldwide. These include a second service center, strategically positioned for the East European market where three countries meet in Koprivnice near Ostrava and also various sales locations and representatives in most European countries and other important countries outside Europe. Part of the secret of their success is also that from the beginning UnionStahl has continually trained young talents in commercial and technical disciplines every year and takes these trainees on where possible. This is the only way to secure the quality we and our customers expect long term, which is a further secret of UnionStahl’s success. Accordingly the continual qualification and further education of staff also plays an important role. 19 20 duisport magazine June 2012 PORTRAIT UnionStahl prefer to rely on healthy growth with our customers on the basis of trust - this offers the best opportunities long term.” And finally - an additional success factor – the employees of the port company have also accompanied the company’s growth in partnership for over ten years, which was extremely important according to Hillekamp. “All our contact partners have always kept their promises and agreements. You can’t expect any more.” And continual investments are made in infrastructure too. New machines have been added again and again to expand the spectrum of services for customers in accordance with technological progress. Hillekamp places great value on this. “We have never acquired machines to rationalize. We buy machines and recruit new employees to carry out even more qualified work and thus not least avoiding some market volatility.” And he adds, “Everything standing in Rheinhausen today has come from organic growth, generated ourselves and not acquired. We Always meeting world changes flexibly The director accordingly weighs things up with satisfaction on the occasion of the anniversary. “It’s going well, we left the growing pains behind us long ago and are very well positioned. We have created a good basis with all our staff, our customers and friends on which we want to grow further.” This does not mean, he assures at once, that the 20th hall bay also has to start operations in 2022. “But we don’t want to restrict our vision. In our assessment the world is currently changing so much so we don’t want to make too many commitments. Instead we believe we have to be flexible and adjust to new challenges. That’s what we want and we’re prepared to do it.” Hillekamp added that UnionStahl was a medium-sized, owner-managed company, which he considered to be a great advantage in the market. "Because it keeps us flexible, because it makes our decisionmaking quicker. And because you can meet customer wishes better due to the fact that we can negotiate better and more freely with both suppliers and customers. And because we can retain a certain degree of individuality,” listed the director. Even if he and his colleagues have chosen a market that does not offer a particularly easy environment. An environment that in his opinion offers one of the most technically interesting and varied products with many different groups of customers, different degrees of processing and, in the wide range of specialization in the steel business, definitely one of the most challenging products. The Lehmbruck Museum, set in the green Kant-Park in the city centre, is a household name in the arts scene. Just a few minutes away towards the main station there is another exhibition location – almost in the shadow of the famous museum building – that does not need to shy away from comparison with the well-known attraction: the cubus kunsthalle. And here too works primarily by Duisburg artists are shown, as the current exhibition “Goldstück” by Andrea Bender proves. (frön) Large format works greet visitors. The mostly bright colors have been applied to the canvas using a variety of techniques: watercolors, drawings, painting. “The colors sometimes flow, sometimes impasto, then glazed, and then so thick again that it creates a relief. Andrea Bender thus directs the observer’s view to the essential. Like a film director who lets his characters act on the screen,” says art historian Dr. Claudia Schaefer, Head of the cubus kunsthalle and its friends association, demanding a closer look. And then it becomes clear that the motives are not clearly tangible, that other truths are hidden behind the seeming idylls with small children and cute toy animals, which ini- tially only surprise, then confuse, sometimes even unsettle. Drawn deeply into the current exhibition in this way, the visitor can easily even lose sight of the rooms. These also explain a multi-faceted history. They emerged in the 50s as the first new public library built in the young Federal Republic. When the public library moved to Düsseldorfer Strasse the Lower Rhine museum initially moved to Friedrich-Wilhelm-Strasse 64. The team wanted to show citizens special finds from the Lower Rhine here. The building served the cause of monument preservation, preparing finds from Duisburg excavations. The end threatened at the start of the 90s. As part of the expansion of the WilhelmLehmbruck-Museum the council of the City of Duisburg resolved to tear the building down. The reason was not only a lack of funds but also the lack of a concept for use. This is where Claudia Schaefer came in. After a successful start in a small shop in Moltkestrasse, until then she had run a studio and gallery rooms in a hall formerly owned by the company Gebrüder Scholten in Duisburg-Duissern. Why not use the empty building in the Kant-Park as an exhibition location for Duisburg artists to give them an opportunity to show their cubus kunsthalle CULTOUR duisport magazine June 2012 uxury but a necessity works to Duisburgers? And to bring citizens to modern art in this way? A friends association helps with financing However, in contrast to the convincing artistic concept the finance plan presented problems. “Although culture is sustainable it does not cover costs,” says Claudia Schaefer, summing up the dilemma. A survey brought the solution: parts of the rooms could be let to a restaurant and for other uses, thus laying the foundations for artistic use. But how to raise the considerable funds needed for the renovation now required? Here too an idea unusual for the times helped. Initially Claudia Schaefer founded a GmbH & Co KG (limited liability company). Contributions from the 50 current limited partners and numerous sponsorship payments made by Duisburg companies helped to finance the extensive conversion. “And this way, which was not always easy, showed itself to be the right way. After a six month conversion phase the building could be brought to the public and culture again in 1995,” explains the Head. Since then the model has changed once. A bit of art included, so to speak. One highpoint for the little ones is the interactive exhibitions for children in summer. “Even today teachers, parents and also former children come to us again and again to report what a lasting impression their visit to us has left.” In addition, the cubus kunsthalle looks to cooperate with institutions and independent event organizers. Thus it was possible to initiate a range of concerts under the slogan cubus culture club in cooperation with the König brewery. But what do we actually mean by these terms, how do these conditions come about and what effects are inland waterways confronted with? (sv) According to DIN 4049 high and low water conditions occur in a surface body of water when the water level reaches a certain threshold and exceeds or falls below this. However, these thresholds can vary according to the location and the measurement approach taken. For example, in Duisburg High Water Mark I (HW I), is only reached at a level of 9.30 m in Ruhrort. In contrast, in Cologne Mark II (HW II) is already exceeded from 8.30 m. Differing from high water there are no official thresholds for low water on the Rhine, apart from the stretch between Bingen and St. Goar. Thus low water is described as a water level considerably below nor- mal. The so-called equivalent water level (GIW) can be considered a reference point here. Seen from a statistical point of view the water level only falls below this on twenty ice free days a year. The Rhine is mainly supplied with precipitation, melt water and the inflow of neighboring bodies of water. Low water occurs as a result of reduced source drainage and/or drought. For example, if no heavy snowfalls occur in the Alps in winter, the snow layers that supply the Rhine with melt water drainage in summer will be low. This results in low water conditions, as also happens during a sustained drought such as that in 2003. In contrast, high water is caused by heavy precipitation, often also in combination with snow melt and eddies caused by ice in a river. Changes in the water level also change the navigability of the waterway infrastructure for ships. In the event of high water, bridge clearance heights are lowered. In combination with the draft of a ship this can lead to the necessity of adjusting the number of container layers accordingly. If the HW I mark is reached, ship speeds have to be cut to 20 km/h. In addition, inland waterway sailors have to sail in the middle third of the channel as Review NEWS duisport magazine June 2012 bed far as possible. From the HW II mark ship navigation even has to be discontinued on certain sections, apart from emergency vessels. When water levels are low channel depths and widths are reduced. On December 1, 2011 the channel depth at Duisburg was only 2.38 m at a level of 1.83 m. Ships thus had to reduce their draft in order to maintain the safety margin of water under the hull of approximately 0.2 to 0.3 m and avoid grounding. Loading capacity was significantly reduced as a result and the cost effectiveness of ship transport fell. Thus in 2003, for example, 12 million tonnes of goods fewer were transported than were carried by inland waterway ship in 2002 as a result of low water. As a provider of trimodal transport solutions, in the event of high or low water in the Port of Duisburg it is possible to divert cargo onto other modes of transport so that orders can continually be met, thus avoiding any delays or bottlenecks. Parameters relevant for inland waterway transport. Fluctuations in water levels caused by high and low water are made clear by the hydrograph levels at Duisburg-Ruhrort from 2000 until 2011. The difference between the highest and lowest water levels ever measured is 11.46 m. 27 duisport magazine June 2012 NEWS IdeenPark Unbelievable – but IdeenPark duisport shows TEU-Story in the HafenMeile all photos:ThyssenKrupp 28 The IdeenPark is opening its doors again from August 11 – 23, 2012. For this purpose children, young people and adults will be offered the most varied range of exhibits. This project is being implemented with the support of around 120 partners such as Microsoft, Siemens, Daimler, Deutsche Telekom and duisport. They are providing insights into their areas of activity and are making it possible to experience their know-how. The interactive idea is IdeenPark taken further here by the extraordinary spatial design. Exhibition halls have been redesigned into a flowing landscape and districts replace the otherwise usual exhibition stands. For the visitor this means choosing between the AeroDrom, the VerkehrsKreisel, the EnergiePark and the HafenMeile among others. Business interests have deliberately been put in the background here. The partners are doing without advertising and the visitor has free entrance to the IdeenPark for the whole period. Everything about containers This event concept was implemented for the first time in 2004 and has already met great interest and enthusiasm among the public. Many of the partners have been involved since then, taking up the challenge set them to convey their highly specific know-how and making it possible to experience this interactively and with a great deal of motivation. The result speaks for itself: around 400,000 visitors are also expected to the IdeenPark in 2012. Thus there was also no question that duisport would not show its commitment here and give insights into the world of the port. In the HafenMeile the visitors are invited to go on a container’s journey and to experience interesting facts about these steel giants among others. But the highlight will definitely be the TEU story. In cooperation with the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences a unique media documentary of the work at a container terminal has emerged. Four monitors show an innovatively made film that will transfix the visitor. All this is presented in a real container specially supplied and converted for the purpose. In addition, there will be lots of information about the issue of logistics, the effects of climate change on deep sea shipping, alternative drive technologies and a presentation of innovative logistics and usage concepts.
