2014 Newsletter - Sportsmen`s Club of Fort Worth
WINTER/SPRING 2014 Rancho Bernalejo Hunting Resort & Spa This fantastic trip started at the 2013 Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth annual banquet when I was the successful bidder on a whitetail hunt to Rancho Bernalejo. As soon as I purchased this trip I was approached by Dr. John Dedwylder “The Deer Doctor” and he informed me that this resort was a 5 star resort with a selection of top class whitetails. I informed my wife the next day of my purchase and she was very apprehensive of my going to Mexico. Together we did extensive research on the ranch and also the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. In our research we found that this was a very safe state and the ranch over has over 13,000 acres with an elevation of 7500 feet in the Sierra Madre Mountains. With all this information on the ranch accommodations, my wife wanted to go with me to the resort. As we started the process of our trip, first we decided on the date of October 10, 2013 which is early in their season and should have the best pick of the whitetails. Next we found that American Airlines flew nonstop to Leon, Mexico airport which was just 60 miles from the ranch. We were in touch with the ranch host “Israel” which spoke enough English to not have a communication problem. He instructed me to not bring a rifle that they had a very good selection to pick from and that he would pick us up at the airport and drive us to the ranch. Finally the day came and the flight was about 2-1/2 hours. Customs was very quick and easy. As we (Continued on page 2) Rancho Bernalejo Hunting Resort & Spa (cont. from page 1) were leaving the baggage area Israel greeted us and escorted us to the F250 crew cab and away we went to the ranch. The spectacular entrance to the ranch has a person to operate the gates as we approached which gave us a more secure feeling. After a 15 minute drive and seeing multiple good whitetails and mule deer we arrived at the lodge. John was right, our accommodations, 3 course meals and the staff made us feel like we were very important. I chose a Kimber 325 short mag with a Zeiss scope and away we went to the shooting range which had targets set up to 500 yards. My first 3 shots at 300 yards were dead on, so I was comfortable with the rifle. The hunting vehicles were Polaris rangers and the blinds were all excellent in keeping you warm, dry, comfortable swivel chairs and blocked the bugs. Each days hunt, we saw numerous whitetails with varying sizes of horns. On the third day I finally saw the one that I wanted and the 223 yard shot was perfect and my trophy was harvested. By the end of our trip my wife had friended every staff member and the chef had given her tips on some of his dishes that he made. She enjoyed all the spa amenities and relaxing out by the fountains while I was hunting. This was a wonderful trip to a beautiful resort for both my wife and I and we will return! Grady Kane Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Colton Henderson from North Richland Hills, Texas, a 17-year old Junior at L.D. Bell High School, shares his hunting experiences. He is one of several recipients of scholarships to attend YO Ranch hunting camp sponsored by the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth. What do you love about hunting? Colton: “It gives me opportunities to go see different places and just be out in nature.” It’s given him the opportunity to get out of the city, where he’s lived all his life, and be outdoors, including West Texas, South Texas, and Kansas. How did you get into hunting? Colton: “Through Big Brothers/Big Sisters. It started with shooting shotguns at Nature Day(in March 2009) and all went uphill from there.” Since then he’s hunted duck, dove, deer, and hogs on Big Brothers/Big Sisters hunts, and ram and pheasant on other hunts he did with his big brother. What did you learn your first year at the YO Ranch hunting camp? Colton: “Learning to stalk an animal. I didn’t know how much went into it until my first year at camp.” Prior to that all of his bigger hunts have involved watching a feeder. How was year two different from year one? Colton: “I was more experienced and more confident in what I was doing”. His first year of camp he only had about a year of hunting experience. By his second year he had another full year and the confidence of the year before to build on. My first year the first time I went hunting I was able to get a Ram…it didn’t take much. But my second year came around and the axis hunts were a lot more difficult. It took my whole time there. I had to stay an extra day to get me Axis. It was a long hunt, but well worth it. I think it’s more of a trophy when you have to put in a lot of work for it.” (continued on page 3) p. 2 Colton Henderson with his Big Brother Mentor What are your goals moving forward? Colton: “I enjoy being a hunting guide for the ranch and for the kids. To be a guide in Africa would be nice. I would like to go back as a camp counselor again and while I’m in college I’d like to guide hunts(on the weekends) for the Y.O. Ranch or any other ranch that would give me an opportunity”. How did it feel to go from being a camper or someone who is getting taken on a lot of hunts to being a guide and being responsible for someone else having a successful hunt? Colton: “It was a very different point of view. When I was a camper I looked at the guide as someone to look up to and listen to. When I was the guide (or counselor), I had to be the person to answer (the campers) questions and had to look after them.” What’s your favorite hunting story? Colton: “At camp this summer, we had a 9 year old girl named Layla who had never shot a gun before. I taught her with a .22 and then took her out on a ram hunt with my .270. When we saw the ram, I had her line up on it a couple times to practice, made sure she didn’t have scope shadow and stuff. When she pulled that trigger I was so surprised to see the ram just drop and she was in shock. It was great.” How do you compare a successful hunt for you with guiding a hunt for someone else? Colton: “I think it’s more of a success if you get someone else that trophy. (On your own) you have to go through it and do everything correct. But getting someone else to be successful is more challenging because you can’t do it for them.” He emphasized that even if everything is set up perfect, there is Talk about hunting successes and failures. still that variable of the hunter missing that is beyond his control. “But if you can get Colton: “Some of my first hunts I didn’t see someone else to go through it and actually do much. After hunting for a while I realized that what you’ve done…it’s a very good feeling.” being out there was more important than just shooting animals. Someone once told me What have you learned on a hunt or in a that ‘any day that you’re outdoors with a gun blind that you didn’t just know before? in your hand is a good day’. A wise man.” “Patience…patience pays off. And dress in layers.” Big hunting plans for the future? After high school graduation, he and his big brother are planning on going on a Black Bear hunt. Why is it important for kids today to get into nature? Colton: “The experiences you can get from hunting. Stories you can tell forever.” He was asked about how many kids just want to play video games, be on the computer, or watch TV. “I’d rather be outside in nature than inside playing video games any day, but that’s my personality.” Do you think hunting is therapeutic? “Hunting is just peaceful in general There’s nothing you have to worry about besides… nothing, really.” What traits do you develop hunting? “Responsibility, preparation, confidence… and how to get up really early” p. 3 The following are letters from a few of the organizations that we have been able to provide financial support as a result of your generosity. Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation On behalf of Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation (TPWF) and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), thank you for your support during the past sixteen years. TPWF is the non-profit funding partner of TPWD. For the past twenty-two years, we have provided private support to TPWD to manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth (SCFW) has been a wonderful partner to TPWD’s Neighborhood Fishin’ Program - a statewide program that provides year-round recreational fishing in urban lakes for local residents. With SCFW’s support, the Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes at Hurst Chisholm Park and Greenbriar Park in Tarrant County are two of the best lakes in the entire program. During 2012, approximately 16,000 anglers spent more than 55,000 hours fishing at these lakes, and more than 40% of these anglers were either youth or new to fishing. A total of 11,076 channel catfish and 3,792 rainbow trout were stocked last year in these two lakes. The program strives to create quality outdoor experiences for youth and families in local public parks; provide opportunities to develop an p. 4 appreciation and love for fishing; and cultivate an understanding of how humans, wildlife and the natural world are connected. There are currently fifteen program lakes in the state with more than 80,000 people participating in the program each year. Of these, more than 65 percent live within five miles of the lake and more than 50 percent tell TPWD these lakes are the only place they fish. Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes are managed as “put-and-take” fisheries, and children under 17 are not required to have a fishing license. Every two weeks, TPWD stocks fish big enough to catch and keep, and the fish are available for harvest as soon as they land in the water. TPWD encourages other organizations and volunteers to utilize the lakes and conduct fishing clinics for youth and families, promote the program in the community, and provide aquatic education. Philanthropic partners like you are helping us offer individuals, families and communities in Tarrant County access to quality outdoor recreation. Thank for believing in our efforts. Anne Brown Executive Director Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation Operation Orphans We would like to thank the SCFW for their wonderful support again this year. Without the help of you folks and others like you we wouldn’t be able to continue to work with the youth from the youth homes and foster care. You folks play a lead role in helping us provide for them. We have been blessed each year by the contributions that you have made to benefit the youth at these facilities. So far this year we have had two fishing camps and three hunts with the children. We had 69 boys and girls participate in the fishing camps. They helped drown 1000 worms. We have had 110 boys and girls participate in the hunting program so far. They harvested 108 animals. Our biggest hunt is scheduled for January 11th there is openings for 72 children at this hunt. With the totals so far and the scheduled hunt in January we should have completed our physical year with 251 children enjoying the outdoors with the help of your wonderful organization and many others. Your donations helped us, finally after 53 years, revitalize our game pasture by getting a dozer to come in establish new roads and open up some of the old ones. Clear cut the perimeter for fire protection and open up senderas for new browse. With your help, we were able to obtain feed to keep the animals alive during the drought and for the upcoming winter. We were able to get two cases of shells for the riles that we have in our compound. We also received a gun sighting device (Caldwell lead sled) to hold our guns in place while we sighted them in annually (45) guns. We also received 12 more needed Zebco combination rod and reels for fish camp. We received, I believe, 85 beetle spin lures for the kids to use. I can’t begin to thank you enough on behalf of Operation Orphans. We survive each year because of wonderful people like you at SCFW. Our motto is: NO ONE STANDS SO TALL AS WHEN THEY STOOP TO HELP A CHILD. You folks can definitely stand tall for all you do for Operation Orphans and all of the other establishments that you help. God bless each and every one of you and sincere thanks for your continued support. Jim Pond, President Operation Orphans p. 5 Frontier Camp Thank you for your generous help in providing hope to children of prisoners. We served 138 campers this past week and they all had a week of unconditional love in the great outdoors. We believe so. I know you do too and I want to thank you for your support of the special week encouraging hope. Here are some other remarks from the campers after their week of camp: These campers are constantly subjected to the belief that the outdoors are scary and that guns are to be used for violence only. “This camp is so fun. I get to interact with more people and become closer to God. No one judges you here and that is good. “ You all have once again helped to show many Tar-rant County children and teens that there is anoth-er way. The outdoors are to be enjoyed and firearms and archery equipment are truly sports and can build self-esteem. “Thank you for helping me come to this wonderful camp. My favorite activity is archery!” Thank you once again for your partnership in reaching out to these special campers and giving them a great outdoors experience. THANK YOU The Power of Camp “Fatherless. Lives with Grandmother. Says his mom doesn’t love him.” “Lives an unsupervised and wild life.” “Dad is in prison. His mom left him in 2012. He is very sad.” The remarks above were taken from the evaluation cards that our counselors fill out on every camper. Heartbreaking. Can a week at camp help kids and teens in these situations? p. 6 “I gave up football practice to come to camp. This is my 4th year. My counselor is so cool!” Matt Raines, Executive Director Frontier Camp Young Life As this year comes to a close, I wanted to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to you and your organization. Your continuous participation and support in our annual Kids Sporting Clay Shoot in August has been a wonderful asset. Your support has enabled Young Life to expose Junior and Senior High students to shooting sporting clays, an experience that most of the young people would not otherwise be exposed to. Over 70% of the youth who attend the event, have never shot a shotgun before and a great majority of the group have never set foot on a ranch. We have had a steady increase in participation over the past few years and we attribute much of that to your continued support and the work of so many volunteers who help put on a great event. In 2013, over 230 kids attended the youth event. Your donation helps us reach more youth in our city and we hope to continue to grow the event and expose more each year. Thank you again for your continued participation in this event. We are thankful for each of you and the role you play in our organization. Sincerely, Larry Tatum Young Life Sporting Clay Chairman p. 7 57 th FEBRUARY 27, 2014 Wild Game Dinner RIDGLEA COUNTRY CLUB The 2014 Annual Wild Game Dinner will be Thursday, February 27 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Ridglea Country Club.
