Day 2: Tue, Oct 7 – OSAKA (Dinner). Arrive Kansai International Airport at 6:15pm. After entry formalities, transfer by coach to hotel in Osaka. A deluxe buffet has been arranged at hotel. HOTEL UNIVERSAL PORT (1 Night) Day 3: Wed, Oct 8 – OSAKA - HIMEJI - KURASHIKI - MIYAJIMA (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner). After a sumptuous buffet breakfast, we drive to Himeji to visit Himeji Castle. It is known as “White Egret Castle” and “White Heron Castle” because of its brilliant white exterior, resembling a bird taking flight. Himeji Castle is the largest and most visited castle in Japan. This splendid example of traditional architecture was declared one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Japan. Next is a visit to Kurashiki. In merchant days, this scenic town thrived as a port for rice shipments. Several old rice granaries and examples of historic architecture still remain, in addition to the stone lined canal. In the afternoon we continue our journey to Hiroshima. After a short ferry ride, arrive on the island of Miyajima considered sacred by many. This evening, soak in the relaxing atmosphere of Iwaso Inn and the Onsen, hot spring baths. You can enjoy the beauty of the primeval forests and gentle sound of mountain stream while taking a bath. This evening, enjoy Hiroshima’s local and seasonal ingredients including fresh seafood from the Seto Inland Sea. IWASO INN (1 Night) Japanese-Style Room with Onsen and Kaiseki Dinner Day 4: Thur, Oct 9 – MIYAJIMA - HIROSHIMA - FUKUOKA (HAKATA) (Breakfast & Lunch). After breakfast, explore Miyajima Island. At high tide, the vermilion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine looks like it’s floating in the middle of the sea. The shrine complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Miyajima has been selected as one of Japan’s three most scenic places (nihon sankei). In Hiroshima, visit the Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Museum. Next, we will try a popular Japanese dish called Okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancake). From Hiroshima, we take a ride on the top speed Shinkansen bullet train to Hakata (Fukuoka). Our local tour guide will have many suggestions for shopping and dinner tonight. Check out Fukuoka’s open air food stalls (yatai). There are over 150 yatai across the city. Typical dishes include grilled chicken skewers (yakitori), hot pot (oden), and Hakata Ramen, a famous local dish featuring thin ramen noodles simmered in pork bone soup (tonkotsu). HAKATA MIYAKO HOTEL (1 Night) Day 5: Fri, Oct 10 – FUKUOKA - NAGASAKI (Breakfast & Lunch). After breakfast, we will head to Nagasaki and visit the Peace Memorial Park with its famous peace statue. Next is Oura Catholic Church, the oldest church in Japan and the only western building to be designated as a national treasure. At Glover Garden, we will enjoy a beautiful collection of historic homes from the Meiji Restoration Period. Enjoy Nagasaki Champon noodles, a local favorite! This evening, enjoy some free time to shop and enjoy time with your travel companions. ANA CROWN PLAZA HOTEL GLOVER HILL (1 Night) Day 6: Sat, Oct 11 – NAGASAKI - ARITA - BEPPU (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner). We visit Arita, where one of the most famous styles of “yakimono” (Japanese Pottery) called Aritayaki originates. At the end of the 16 century, the political ruler of Japan (Hideyoshi Toyotomi) invaded Korea. When his forces withdrew, the Nabeshima Gun (armed forces) brought back several Korean potters to Japan. Among these potters was Yi Sam-pyeong (Japanese name Kanagae Sanpei) who in 1616 discovered Kaolin clay on Izumiyama (Izumi Mountain) in Arita, and produced the first fine white porcelain in Japan. We now drive east to a bather’s paradise - the celebrated hot spring resort of Beppu. Beppu is famous for its “hells” dramatic pools of bubbling water, mud, and geysers. View four of the nine hells of Beppu–hot springs ideal for viewing rather than bathing. At night, we will savor local flavors in a traditional Japanese Kaiseki banquet provided by your hotel. After a Japanese breakfast at the hotel, we will board a ferry to the port of Yawatahama on Shikoku Island where we will visit Ishiteji Temple in Matsuyama. This impressive temple is number 51 on the “88 Temple Pilgrimage”, the most famous religious pilgrimage route in Japan. The “Niomon” gate at this temple is a national treasure and its three story pagoda and main hall are designated important cultural properties, with the architecture style of the Kamakura Period (1192-1333). Next, we visit Matsuyama Castle, one of the 12 original wooden castles in Japan that survived wars, fires, and the Meiji restoration. Now head east to Takamatsu. JR HOTEL CLEMENT TAKAMATSU (1 Night) Day 8: Mon, Oct 13 – KOTOHIRA - RITSURIN PARK - NARUTO - SETO BRIDGE - KOBE - OSAKA (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner). In the morning, we visit Ritsurin Park, a masterpiece of Japanese landscape 100 years in the making. This sprawling park features beautiful ponds and pavilions with a backdrop of the majestic Mt. Shiun. We then visit the Kompirasan, also known as Kotohira-gu, the main shrine dedicated to sailors and seafaring. Our next stop is the Onaruto Bridge Interpretive Center, where we will learn about Japan’s largest natural whirlpool and the engineering innovations that went into the construction of its massive bridges. We now make way back to Osaka via Kobe. This evening savor the world famous Kobe Wagyu Beef Shabu Shabu Dinner. HOTEL GRANVIA OSAKA (1 Night) Day 9: Tue, Oct 14 – OSAKA (Breakfast). HOTEL UNIVERSAL PORT (1 Night) Day 3: Tue, Oct 7 – OSAKA - NARA - KYOTO (Breakfast & Lunch). In the morning we will travel to Osaka Castle. From Osaka we travel to Nara, the oldest capital city of Japan. Visit Todaiji Temple, the largest wooden building in Japan. The largest bronze statue of Buddha at 16.3 meters high and the surrounding park is inhabited by over 1,000 Shika Deer. Then we proceed to Uji where we will experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. On our way to Kyoto, we will visit the stunning vermilion colored Fushimi Inari Shrine, whose 4km long tunnel of scarlet torii gates was featured in the film Memoirs of a Geisha. After check in, explore the many restaurants and shops conveniently located near your hotel. NEW MIYAKO HOTEL KYOTO (2 Nights) Day 4: Wed, Oct 8 – KYOTO (Breakfast & Lunch). Today we continue our tour of Kyoto, once the capital of Japan and still considered its cultural center. First is a visit to the famous Kiyomizu Temple (literally “Pure Water Temple”), is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. Today’s hands-on experience is “Surikomi Yuzen (brush dyed Yuzen)”, which is one of Kyoto’s traditional craft “Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing” techniques. Since the patterns are dyed by placing a paper stencil over a piece of fabric, such as a handkerchief, you can make an authentic piece, even if this is your first time. Your very own original work will be a perfect memento for yourself or a gift for someone. Lunch will be served at “Ganko Sanjo” where you will enjoy a specially prepared teishoku set – “Ganko Gozen”. At the Nishijin Textile Center, you can view displays of kimonos and even watch a kimono fashion show. Next, visit Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), a Zen Temple whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Lastly, we will tour Gion, the old Geisha Quarter. Our local tour guide will have many suggestions for dinner. Day 5: Thur, Oct 9 – KYOTO - KANAZAWA (Breakfast & Dinner). After breakfast, take a JR Limited Express train to Kanazawa located on the shores of the Sea of Japan. Visit Kenrokuen Garden, one of the three most beautiful strolling gardens of Japan. The name Kenrokuen literally means a garden combining the 5 attributes of a perfect landscape: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water features and panoramas. Next we visit, Omicho Market, Kanazawa’s largest fresh food market since the Edo Period. Today, it is a busy and colorful network of covered streets lined by about 200 shops and stalls. While most shops specialize in the excellent local seafood and produce, you can also find flowers, clothing, kitchen tools and more on sale. It is not unusual for lines to build in front of the popular restaurants, many of which specialize in rice bowls topped with fresh Kanazawa seafood. Then we stroll past a Chaya (lit. teahouse), an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. During the Edo Period, chaya were found in designated entertainment districts, usually just outside the city limits. They are charming places with wooden buildings and paved streets reminiscent of another era. ANA CROWN PLAZA KANAZAWA (1 Night) Day 6: Fri, Oct 10 – KANAZAWA - TAKAYAMA (Breakfast & Dinner). After breakfast, we continue on to Takayama, where a festival that dates back to the 15th century will be heating up. This city is located amongst the Alps and is known as “Little Kyoto” for its preserved historical structures and environment. Due to it’s remote position in the mountains, it was cut off from the rest of Japan for most of its history and thus has maintained a very unique and traditional atmosphere. This festival is also known as the Hachiman Festival because it is centered on Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine. It is to give thanks for a good harvest. Watch the floats as they parade through Old Town. This evening relax JA PA N Takayama Kyoto JAPAN Tokyo Osaka Nara Hakone PACIFIC OCEAN with a restful soak in the onsen (hot springs). Finally, enjoy the seasonal bounty of your specially prepared, Kaiseki dinner. HIDA HOTEL PLAZA (1 Night) Day 7: Sat, Oct 11 – TAKAYAMA - HAKONE (Breakfast & Dinner). After breakfast we will continue sightseeing in Takayama, which includes the Morning Market, Takayama Jinya and Old Town. You can browse the market stalls for local crafts and fresh farm products. Takayama’s Old Town has been beautifully preserved, with many buildings and whole streets of houses dating from the Edo Period (1600-1868). On some streets, like Sannomachi Street, you can find many old homes, shops, coffee houses and sake breweries, some of which have been in business for centuries. We now make way to Hakone where you will enjoy a pirate boat ride on beautiful Lake Ashi. Again, enjoy a relaxing soak in an onsen before this evening’s Kaiseki dinner. HOTEL KOWAKI-EN (1 Night) Day 8: Sun, Oct 12 – HAKONE - TOKYO (Breakfast). Today we begin with a 20 minute ropeway from Togendai to Owakudani. Much of the area here is considered an active volcanic zone since its creation from the eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. There you can view hot springs and hot rivers, where sulfurous fumes still linger. Owakudani also has splendid views of Mount Fuji in good weather. Then, proceed to Tokyo. This afternoon and evening, explore on your own. There are many shops and restaurants nearby your hotel. HOTEL GRAND PACIFIC LE DAIBA (1 Night) Day 9: Mon, Oct 13 – TOKYO - HONOLULU (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner). After a sumptuous buffet breakfast at your hotel embark on a full day of discovery! Asakusa is the center of Tokyo’s shitamachi (literally “low city”), one of Tokyo’s districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa’s main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Ameyoko is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name“Ameyoko” is a short form for “Ameya Yokocho” (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, “Ame” also stands for “America”, because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War Two. Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Today’s highlight will be a hands-on, sushi-making session, which will yield your delicious lunch. After visits to Meiji Shrine and the visually stimulating Harajuku shopping district, enjoy your Farewell Dinner at an Izakaya restaurant. Depart Haneda, Tokyo via HAWAIIAN AIR FLT #458 at 11:55pm. Alternatively, “Ame” also stands for “America”, because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War II. Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Today’s highlight will be a hands-on, sushimaking session, which will yield your delicious lunch. After visits to Meiji Shrine and the visually stimulating Harajuku shopping district, enjoy dinner at an authentic Izakaya restaurant. Day 4: Wed, Oct 15 – TOKYO - YOKOHAMA - EMBARK DIAMOND PRINCESS® (Breakfast & Lunch). After breakfast, checkout from hotel. Half day sightseeing tour of Yokohama. We start our day by visiting, Sankeien – a spacious Japanese style garden in southern Yokohama which exhibits a number of historic buildings from across Japan. There is a pond, small rivers, flowers and wonderful scrolling trails that make you think you are in Kyoto rather than Yokohama. The garden was built by Hara Sakei and opened to the public in 1904. Among the historic buildings exhibited in the park are an elegant daimyo (feudal lord) residence, several tea houses and the main hall and three storied pagoda of Kyoto’s old Tomyoji Temple. Followed by a visit to Yokohama’s famous, Chinatown. Lunch at local restaurant. We then visit “Minato Mirai 21”a seaside urban area in central Yokohama whose name means “harbor of the future”. It has many large high-rises, including Japan’s tallest building, the Landmark Tower. Minato Mirai is blessed with a great location along the water and has a wealth of attractions. Visitors to the area will find shopping centers, hotels, a convention center, an amusement park, a relaxation center with hot spring baths, museums and park space. Transfer to Yokohama Pier and embark Diamond Princess®. Day 5: Thur, Oct 16 – Relaxing Day at Sea Day 6: Fri, Oct 17 – Osaka, Japan. 7:00am - 6:00pm. Modern Osaka is home to monuments from Japan’s past including Toyotomi’s immense castle and the Sumiyoshi Shrine. The city is also your gateway to Kyoto, Japan’s ancient imperial capital and the nation’s cultural and spiritual center. Day 7: Sat, Oct 18 – At Sea Day 8: Sun, Oct 19 – Okinawa, Japan. 7:00am - 2:00pm. The largest island in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Okinawa has been a center of trade and a source for conflict through its history. The island has been an independent kingdom, the feudal possession of a Japanese daimyo and a prefecture of Japan following the Meiji Restoration of 1866. Okinawa was the scene of bitter fighting during the closing days of World War II. Over 100,000 civilians perished and the island was left in ruins. A US military possession, Okinawa returned to Japanese rule in 1972. Naha is the island’s largest city and the capital of Okinawa Prefecture. Day 9: Mon, Oct 20 – Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan. 8:00am - 6:00pm. Taipei is Taiwan’s capital city and one of the world’s most important commercial centers. Despite its turbulent history, Taiwan today boasts an economy that is the envy of the world. Modern Taiwan is a world leader in the production of bicycles, computer chips, plastics, chemicals and computer notebooks. Taipei is a sophisticated modern metropolis that has not forgotten its rich traditional past. Day 10: Tue, Oct 21 – At Sea Day 11: Wed, Oct 22 – Hong Kong, China. 7:00am - 6:00pm. Skyscrapers form a glistening forest of steel and glass, junks and sampans ply the busy harbor waters, and the green, dragoncrested hills of Kowloon beckon. Welcome to Hong Kong, one of the world’s great travel destinations. Now a semi-autonomous region of China, Hong Kong – literally “Fragrant Harbor” – has lost none of its charm, excitement or exoticism. Modern skyscrapers and luxury hotels climb the slopes of Hong Kong Island. Narrow streets are crammed with noodle vendors, fortune tellers and bone setters. The endless array of shops offer the visitor everything from hand-tailored suits and ancient porcelain to the latest consumer electronics. And everywhere more than seven million people are moving at a breathtaking pace in one of the world’s great monuments to capitalism, commerce and enterprise. Day 12: Thur, Oct 23 – At Sea Day 13: Fri, Oct 24 – Chan May (Da Nang/Hue),Vietnam. 7:00am - 5:00pm. The port of Chan May is located halfway between two historic & important cities: Da Nang & Hue. At the height of the Vietnam War, Da Nang was America’s major strategic base. And the 1968 Tet Offensive marked a major turning point in that conflict - particularly in the bitter fighting for control of the old imperial capital. But that was nearly 40 years ago. Today Hue is a World Heritage Site. Visitors will long remember its imposing Imperial Citadel and the serene harmony of the Thien Mu Pagoda. Marble Mountain Beach, where American marines stormed ashore in 1965, is now an internationally renowned resort. Day 14: Sat, Oct 25 – Nha Trang, Vietnam. 9:00am - 5:00pm. Nha Trang was the capital of the Champa Kingdom, which dominated this corner of Southeast Asia for 13 centuries. North of the city, the Cham Tower complex overlooks the Cai River and offers mute testimony to the kingdom’s glory. Today, the towers attract locals and visitors alike, many of whom come to meditate while contemplating superb views of the river and the bay. Day 15: Sun, Oct 26 – Ho Chi Minh City (Phu My), Vietnam. 7:00am - 6:00pm. Over three decades have passed since the Vietnam War ended with the fall of Saigon. Today, the name of this bustling metropolis on the Mekong River is Ho Chi Minh City. Yet, the essence of the city, a major trading center since the 18th century, remains unchanged. The air is filled with the cries of street hawkers and honking horns. Bicycles, motorbikes and automobiles fly down the boulevards at dizzying speeds. And everywhere, friendly faces and warm greetings meet you. Day 16: Mon, Oct 27 – At Sea Day 17: Tue, Oct 28 – SINGAPORE - DISEMBARK DIAMOND PRINCESS® - SEOUL (Lunch & Dinner). Full Day sightseeing in Singapore. In the morning visit Merlion Park, Old Parliament House, statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, Esplanade, Asian Civilizations Museum.
