This lends an effect of brightness to the transparent areas of the tortoiseshell. On the front the scene shows Kosekiko, who looses a shoe while crossing the river, and on the reverse side Chªryª, who is standing on a river dragon, holding Kosekikos’ shoe in his hand. The details are carved in relief and additionally emphasised with gold plate ivory, mother of pearl and coral. The insides have been done in fine gold-nashiji, the meeting edges in fundame. The ojime is made out of semiprecious stone and the large netsuke out of tortoiseshell. On which a crab, on a lotus, leaf has been depicted. 106 Lay_BiBa_054_107.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_054_107.indd 106 y_BiBa_054_107.indd 106 01.10.2008 8 10:58:18 Uh Uhrr Bildband_54_107_KW 20.10.2008 16:32 Uhr Seite 107 Inrª ۗᧀ 063 18th century 70 x 37 x 30 mm ȭɈ࠷Ȟۗᧀൌɉ൲ટɈީణସ၀ɬਗɩȵ ɀঙฤȯɦɀȞɥăȷɈষɅێငɅࣸɈݴჹᅕ ɬȜȱɣȽȹବȥܴĉɈཊɁެതൌɬဒȽ ɀȞɥăࣸമཇɬෟȽɀɄȞஒɬާȫɀəɥɂ ᅎࡉɈݚණɉީɈణସɁȜɥૢȦယȥɥă ȯɣɅȷɈ௫Ʌඹ੧ɁࡋᇕɅᄀɬȥȫȹᅕɅ ȱɀ௫ȬɀȜɥă࿃ฆȱɉଁȾɈݴఄɤɈࣺ ɈᆾȥɣȽɀȞɥă໘തɂਗɩȵᄆɉਥଉȦ ɣɦɀȞɥăำɉූɄඹ၂ə੧Ɂ౺ȫ ݴɈᧀɈवɬȱɀȞɥăɉĂଁၣ௫ȬɁĂ ޡચɅɜᅙɁȧɥă Individual pieces of mother of pearl were first fixed onto the rounded body of the inrª. Afterwards a band out of pewter/lead(?), which is partially covered with a gold stamped flower pattern was applied over the entire outside area. Openings in the foil have been left where the pieces of mother of pearl can be seen on the body. This structure has been enclosed in a finely interlaced work, out of bamboo. The path of the cord, has been made up of seven inset silverloops with flower rosettes. The insides and the meeting edges have been done in black lacquer. The ojime is out of finely woven bamboo and represents an ikebana-basket. The netsuke can be used as an ashtray and has been worked in cloisonné. 107 Lay_BiBa_054_107.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_054_107.indd 107 y_BiBa_054_107.indd 107 01.10.2008 10:58:18 8:18 Uh Uhrr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 064 15:11 Uhr Seite 108 Inrª ۗᧀ Late 18th century 59 x 54 x 21 mm ȭɈۗᧀɉީణସɁɣɦȹɺʹˋʴɬ༜Ɉ ȯȰɛȧɈჹᅕɈଉණɈ௫Ʌ௮ȵɀȽȹȥɈ ۗɬᅇȢɥăȱȥȱଌɉɅణସɬ௮ȵ ɀȥɣĂȷɦȥɣɺʹˋʴȦ܋ȞɁȞɥȥɈᅕɅ ༜ჹᅕɬ࿑ȞɀȞȽȹɈɁȜɥăȭɈ༜ჹᅕɈ ၭɉȥɄɤ୷ᇣȱȹગȧɈᆯȞࡳɁ࿑Ȟ ɀȞɀĂଞɈࡳᆲɈȯȦଏɊɦɥă༜ɜᄫ ॽێȱɀəɥɂ۲ࠆȧȥܟჹᅕȺɧȠɂૃȠȦĂ ଌɉ༜Ɉೀɉ༗ჹᅕɅɄȽɀȞɀĂજȾɈȧ ɄࠆȧȞȹ๘ɅɄȽɀȞɥă໘തɂਗɩȵᄆ ɉਥଉȦɣɦɀȞɥăࣖɉణᶯණɁᅰɀ ȞɀĂɺʹˋʴȦວȲᅕɅ࿑ȥɦɀȤɤĂݤᅂɂ ჭȦȜɥăȱȥȱɄȦɣȭɦɉᄵშɄݡ༐ݤᅂ Ɉ࿚ɁɉɄȞȺɧȠă The decor of the inrª arouses the impression that the water skater, out of mother of pearl, has been applied on top of the waves. However, the mother of pearl was applied first, before the fine lines were carried out around the insect. The wave design alone testifies to a very steady hand, and the great experience of the artist carrying out the work. On closer inspection one first notices that there are not only circles and spirals. The decor, applied in tomoe-design, is of three large twined commas The insides and the meeting edges have been done in black lacquer. The brass disk of the kagamibuta also shows a water skater and bears the signature “Natsuo”. It should however, be assumed that it is not a work by Kanª Natsuo. 108 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd 108 01.10.2008 12:11:34 4 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 109 Inrª ۗᧀ! 065 18th century 76 x 53 x 28 mm ȭɈஒۄĂۜȧȱۗᧀɂঘɊɦɀȞɥဘɉ݁തȥɣ ۜȩૢɈᅰɥۜȧȱȦवȾȫɣɦɀȜɥăۗᇺɈ ݁തɅɉۜȧȳૢɈᅰɥᅕɅ୬৲Ȧ௫ɅȥȽ ɀഖȽɀȞɥăȷɦȸɦɈۜȧȱɉࣸᆄණɈ௫Ʌࣸ ိޤɁݴჹᅕȦ࿑ȥɦɀȞɀĂ໘തɉਥଉȦɣ ɦɀȞɥăۜȧȱɈəɂȱɀழȯȞޅɈȾɘə ȦଲɤȫɣɦɀȞɥăۗᇺɈႨൌɉȥɄɤࣅȩઐȽ ɀȜɤĂȷȭɅɉ൨੮ɂȱɀ߷ɂȦഐɈෂɅۢކ ɅɄȽɀ࿑ȥɦɀȞɥăȭɈޤɉɜɂɜɂࣸᆄණɅࣸ ɂಆࣸိޤɁ࿑ȥɦɀȜȽȹăইɈޤɈಙɉĂ ଲɤȫɣɦȹ ࿃ ฆȱɅ๒ȽɀɘȺॽɥૢȦ ᅰɥă߷Ɉवɬȱȹມ૱ࡉɈɅɉۗჭȦȹɦ ɀȞɥȦĂɁȧɄȞă With this so called drawer inrª, the compartments can be taken out sideways. To do this a side piece of the inrª, can be pushed upward in a groove. The outside of each compartment has been worked in gold-nashiji with a flower pattern in gold-hiramakie. The insides have been done in black lacquer. A small knob out of ivory serves as a grip. The body of the inrª has been very worn, through which the motif of the duck and goose between grasses appears as a negative. Originally it was carried out in gold and aokinhirakamie on gold-nashiji. Remains of the original picture are still to be found along the groove where the cord runs. The netsuke in the form of a duck bears a stamped signature which is no longer legible. 109 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd 1.indd 109 01.10.2008 0.2008 12:11:34 12:11:34 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 066 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 110 Inrª ۗᧀ Early 18th century 62 x 51 x 20 mm ȭɈۗᧀɅɩɦɀȞɥ೧੮ɂࡳᆲɬॽȹȺȫɁɜĂ ဿ௫࿚ɄۗɬିȫɥăݚණɉਥଉɈ௫ɅȢɛɅ ੧ȥɄಆࣸဢȦȥɦɀȞɥăȷɈ௫ɅᅝȽɋɂࢼɅ ࣣᄐȦಘଉɁ࿑ȥɦĂɘȺஒęॽɥȭɂȦɁȧɥă ݦᄐɂᅝȽɋɈޤɉௌඖဢɬූɅȞɀȜɥȦĂ ᅝიငယɉɩȰɩȰྤȫɀᆾߐɬȱɀȞɥă໘ത ɉࣸᆄණɁਗɩȵᄆɉဢᆕɁ௫ȬɣɦɀȜɥă ࡾݴဦᅕɈ0ำ@ɉࣺɁᅰɀȞɥăಆາɈ ɉຓɈवɬȱɀȞɀࣺࣸɁࡾᄐɂࣣᄐȦ࿑ȥ ɦɀĂȯɣɅழᦹဦ૦ɁჭȦȹɦɀȜɥă The materials and the techniques used in this piece alone, allow for a very elegant effect. The background is comprised of a fine aokin powder, sparingly sprinkled in black lacquer. On top of this the motif of the kiri-mon has been drawn, with leafwork in red lacquer, which is still visible in places. The takamakie of the mon and the leaves has been built up in charcoal powder, which with the last application of black lacquer has been blocked out in very finely drawn leaf veins. The insides have been done in gold-nashiji, the meeting edges in fundame. The netsuke in the form of a stylised chrysanthemum flower has been worked in silver. The bronze-netsuke in the form of a drinking bottle, bears applications in gold and silver which represent the kirimon and the chrysanthemum flower and even Japanese characters. 110 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd y_BiBa_108 161.indd 110 01.10.2008 0.2008 12:11:34 12:11:34 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 111 Inrª ۗᧀ! 067 Early 18th century 66 x 54 x 22 mm ȭɈෂݸˁĜʹˋɈɃɭɐɤɈܯɅɢȩȜɥߍव۲ࠆ ჹᅕɁڱɘɦȹూုɉᆈɅ݇ɂȧপȽɀȞɥ༳ ɈݴȦ࿑ଖȯɦɀȞɥă݇ɉࣺȜɥȞɉᆶɅශఋȯ ɦȹޅɁᅰɀȞɀĂ༳ɈݴɉࣸĂࣺĂಘથ়Ɂ ᅰɀȞɥăᄄɈࠎɞ࠾ɉࣸĂಆࣸޤɁஒɅࢪȽɀ ᖓࣸɂయ࿑ࡳၭȦᅙȯɦɀȞɥăȭɈܳࣷࠐɈȜɥ ဇɉਥଉɅಆࣸණɬɄȱĂ༬ाɉಇȥɄࣸᆄණɅ ȱɀĂ࠾ɈষɧɈઔഐɉࣸိޤɁ௫ȬɀȜɥă ໘തɉࣸᆄණɅɄȽɀȞɀĂਗɩȵᄆɉဢᆕɁȜɥă ำɉణᶯɁݴɈ௫ɈழɬȱɀĂɉౡಒɬ ȽɀĂȷȭɅࣺɁழɬ࿑ଖȱɀȜɥă Within cartouches which themselves are surrounded by a meander design in hirakamie, on both the front and the back of the inrª is the depiction of a bird on or by a plum tree. Remains of the original nashiji ground can be found merely along the raised application out of lead, and mother of pearl and the crane in takamakie. The now visible Negoro effect, was not originally intended and resulted over time through rubbing in the red and black lacquer areas. The insides have been done in red lacquer and fundame. The ojime has been worked as a coral ring, and on the boxwoodnetsuke, from the nineteenth century, the remains of a red lacquer application is recognisable on the cranes head. 112 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108 8_161.indd 161.indd 112 01.10.2008 12:11:34 34 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 113 Inrª ۗᧀ! 069 Mid 17th century 68 x 60 x 27 mm ȭɈۗᧀɅɉȯɘȰɘɄ3ႳީɂࠆީɈޠూȦ࿑ ȥɦɀȞɥăȭɈూɉࣸɞಆࣸɈਗޤɁȜɥă ࠾ɉࣸɂ෭ީɈಜࣸᒞɁࣅ෮ȯɦɀȞɥăީɂࠆީ ɉࣸĂࣺĂ෭ީɂથ়ɬݡĂᒞȱȹɜɈɁȜɥă ௫ငɂݚငɉდɄࣸᆄණɁɣɦĂ໘ငɜວᅕɁ ȜɥăᆏȻ௫ȦɤɈਗȞငယɉဢᆕɅɄȽɀȞɥă ࡦಒɈำɛɉથ়ɈᒞɈఋɬ܇ȱɀȞɥăީव ɈɉޅɁɣɦĂழȯɄఋȫȯɦȹޅĂ າɞࣺȦᒞȯɦɀȞɥăଞჭɈટɉฦɅਟɘ ɦɀȞɥă On the inrª a scene of a coastal landscape with various shells and sea snails has been depicted. Assumably the leather was laid on a paper form whose structure produced the effect of algae flowing in water. The window like cut-out on the front (of the inrª), is intensified by the slightly prominent profile. In contrast to other quite rare inrª out of kinkarakawa, this piece has hardly been coated with lacquer, which allows the surface to appear very natural, however this also makes it susceptible to wear and other damage. The box wood-ojime is worked in the form of a bell, the netsuke shows a wooden bowl with gilded flowers, in black and red lacquer. 114 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd y_BiBa_108 161.indd 114 01.10.2008 0.2008 12:11:35 12:11:35 Uh Uhrr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 115 Inrª ۗᧀ 070 17th century 109 x 57 x 33 mm ȭɈ࿚ɉ௪वۗᧀɂฆɈඦ୭ɇɈۗᧀɬਗɩȵ ȹဿɅȱȞɜɈɁȜɥăߨڧఋɈଉɬɣɦȹ ழȯɄతආɈ໘തɉࣸఋɅകȯɦĂȯɣɅෂɅɉ ც݄ȦۦɅɬ૩ȽɀȞɥăȭɦɉྃ༎ɬඣ Ȼಜɥɂ۾ȠૢɁĂɅɉɬڐȽɀȞɥăȯɣɅൌ Ɉ༬ाȥɣݮȦȧɀȞɥȦĂȭɦɜྃ༎ɬௌȧ ಜɥڻɈɁȜɥă௪ૺɈຓɬསȞɀəɥɂĂ ໘തɅɉʍˋʑʇ˂ʛʠဦ૦ȦഔଉɈ௫ɅࣸණɁஙȥ ɦɀȞɥă This object is a very rare mixture of a sheath inrª and an ordinary one with compartments that fit inside one another. A metal loop allows a small relic to be pulled out, whose fittings run along a flute in the cord groove. The dark brown lacquered relic is gilded on the inside and contains a small wooden figure, the Fudªmyªª, who with the sword in his right hand cuts away the bonds of suffering, symbolised by the rope in his left hand. The flames behind him represent the fire which burns earthly suffering. When one removes the relic from the sheath, a character from the Sanskrit is revealed, applied in gold to the “algae lacquer” on the inside. There, according to the saga, to prepare the elixir for long life, or the fare for the new year feast. When he is a thousand years old, his fur becomes white, represented on this object by the rabbit being out of mother of pearl. Horsetail (equistetaceae) was always a prized natural product used to grind or polish various materials. According to legend, rabbits polished the moon to a high shine with horsetail. The ojime out of silver and shakudª, shows a rabbit in relief (shishiaibori) on a full moon, while on the reverse side a gilded sickle of moon has been carved in relief. The rabbit of the unsigned box wood netsuke, has eyes out of inlayed yellowish and redish horn. In Wranghams index he questions the year of death 1745. If this date is correct, then Tsuchida Sªetsu finished this inrª in his last year. The composition of the motif is very much in the style of Sªetsu. It shows two rabbits amongst horsetail plants, which typical to Sªetsu, have been worked partially in metal or mother of pearl. The stalks in takamakie are additionally accentuated with gold-kirigane. A certain sense of depth is achieved by arranging the little branches, in hiramakie, in front of and behind the stems. The rabbits themselves are out of applied mother of pearl and gold-hiramakie. 117 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd y_BiBa_108 161.indd 117 01.10.2008 1.10.2008 12:11:35 12:11:35 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 072 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 118 Inrª ۗᧀ Early 18th century 68 x 50 x 30 mm ȭɈۗᧀɈჶɉဦᅕݛȯɦȹݴȦॽૢɅ๙ຕโɄ ଁၣᅕૺɁএȯɦɀȞɥăਥଉණɅɉɛਮɭȺణ ସ၀ȦೀȜɥȞɉྐྵवɅழȯȩĂݴɈݴ၉ɂȱɀ ޑɤɬଲɤڱɚɢȠɅᅂଓɬଳȽɀȞɥăᆤതɈჶ Ɉᅟငယɉ۲ळჹᅕɈణෂɉಘଉɅਟəਮəɬȞ ɦɀȽɀȜɥă၀ჶɅɉᇻॿఱɂษાȦʦᄄɈ ݚɅȤɤĂᆈჶɉᇻॿఱɂ૧ۡાȦ࿑ȥɦɀȜɥă The background area of this inrª is decorated with a fine pattern of stylized flowers in a classical Shippª-pattern. The black lacquer layers predominate on this object, which emphazises the glowing thin red lacquer lines. The cord groove has been partly covered and designed in such a way that the cord under the inrª cannot be tied into a knot. The front was originally designed with gold lacquer with inlaid Japanese characters made of mother of pearl while the edges were designed in dense gold nashiji. The surface is clearly worn, lending a very nice patina to the object and doubtlessly indicating intense use. On the back, eight cartouches made of mother of pearl have been arranged around a central circle, also inlaid in mother of pearl. The wood ojime has also been worked as a temple bell. The boxwood netsuke shows a sitting priest and, like the inrª, manifests a very beautiful patina and traces of wear and tear. This technique preserves the leather structure on the outside and at the same time stabilises and hardens the otherwise soft and sensitive skin. Usually the leather is first impregnated with a thinned lacquer, for a deeper penetration. and to ensure a better hardening of the lacquer in the leather. The war fan decor has been applied to the lacquer after this process, and purposely partially worn to give the impression of old gold leather. All of the insides are also done in black lacquer. The ojime is a coral bead, the ivory netsuke shows a samurai helmet (kabuto) with a helmet spike (mabezashi) out of coral. Working with cedar wood that is intended to be seen is difficult, because it is very soft and tools leave behind deep marks. The couple in a boat are a ceramic application, the rocks are of a matt lacquered putty material. On the reverse side are a sickle moon out of pewter and the cartouche signature with the Ritsuªseal applied in ceramic. The wood has assumably only been impregnated with lacquer once or twice. The surface of the inrª gets its’ patinated character through wear and the variable penetration of lacquer. The lacquered ivory netsuke by Shªminsai shows Narihira playing with Takako. ɉĂଉȦ৵ݛȳɥɂȧɅᄄɈ ཊȞငယȦཱɣɄȞɢȠɅĂ໘ငɅɜଉɬɣɄȫɦ ɊɄɣɄȞăᆏȻ௫ȦɤܯɉਥଉɅࣸɈဢᆕȦૈȯɦ ɀȞɥăມࡉɈૹɉᄄɅᒞȯɦĂɂᆈɈ࠾ɉݚණ Ɂ౻ɤȜȬɀĂଉĂࣸဢɂಆࣸဢɁఄɤȾȫɣɦɀ ȞɥăޅɈำɛɉဦᅕݛȯɦȹᯎᯅȦএȯɦ ɀȞɥăఋȿȫȯɦȹჟჭɈޅɈɉૹɈ௫Ʌ ܮȦɣɦɀȞɥă As with the previous inrª, the body of this piece is also made out of one piece of cedar wood. So that the thin wood walls do not warp, in the damp climate, during the hardening period of the lacquer, the whole insides must also be lacquered. The meeting edges in gold fundame, are set back from the black lacquer. The stag, out of ceramic, has been applied to the wood, the pine tree and the rocks on the reverse side are built out of a mass of ground material, and decorated with brown lacquer and gold and aokin powder. Although he was neither related to Ritsuª (Haritsu I) nor his pupil, Hanzan called himself Haritsu II. His work strongly resembles the work of Ritsuª and in part he developed his (Ritsuª) techniques further. In particular the filigree working of birds feathers in ceramic, can be seen as a heightening of Ritsuª often restrained work in ceramic. 128 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108 8_161.indd 161.indd 128 01.10.2008 12:11:36 6 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 129 Inrª ۗᧀ 082 Hanzan (1743 -1790) 68 x 52 x 21 mm ȭɈۗᧀɉਥଉɈႭȧණɅষɧɬȞȹୃ௫Ɉၽዠ ɬ࿑ȞɀȞɥăၽዠɉು੧Ʌ௫ȬɣɦȹມࡉĂഫɉ ବɁᅰɀȞɥăᇿႳɈᅝɉߠީɁਥଉɅိᒞ ȯɦĂມࡉɁɣɦȹ 2 ႳɈᅝɂݴȦᒞȯɦɀ ȞɥăୃɉಜࣸᆄණᒞɁࣅ෮ȯɦĂ࿃ฆȱɉငယโ ɅࣸଉɈȾɥჹᅕɁ௫ȬɣɦɀȞɥăཔɈਗȞɉ ఋɈݚණȦ࣡੧ȩॽȢɥᅕɅĂɘȹਗȞɬࣅ෮ȳ ɥᅕɅɣɦɀȞɥăཔɈฦɅɉࣸଉɈટɈჭɂ෭ ީɈۗჭȦȜɥă On the polished black ground of this inrª the motif shows a bird Hªª, on a branch, whose gaze is directed backwards. The motif of the cock on a drum is well known in Japan. These drums were originally beaten to call together the solders in times of war. In peace times they were beaten by the citizens to make their complaints known. If the drums were not beaten, but taken over by the animals, it was a symbol of peace and subservient satisfaction. The inscription “kanko taishin ken fukyª” in old characters on the reverse side reads, the drum is thickly overgrown with moss, indicating that it has not been touched for a very long time, which shows the satisfaction of the people. 130 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108 8_161.indd 161.indd 130 01.10.2008 12:11:36 6 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 131 Inrª ۗᧀ 083 Ritsuª, early 19th century 74 x 65 x 23 mm ȭɈۗᧀɉതჶɅࣺჟɈ࿃ฆȱɈȜɥĂཆඥ౿Ɉ હȾɈཔȥɣᅰɀȞɥăჶɅɉມࡉɈാযɈ ྛȦᒞȯɦɀȞɥࣸޤɈാযȦȜɥăാযɈ ௫Ʌɉ෭ީɂࣸೀޤɈᅂॐɂȦȞɥăᆈത ɉݚණɁ౻ɤ௫Ȭȹဦ૦ɂࣺɈĶʃˋķɈۗჭȦ Ȝɥă໘ငɉఋɅɣɦᆏȻ௫ȦɤܯɅɉဢᆕȦ ȜɥăำɛɉࣸુɈষນ( ݦ1665-1876) ȦᅙȞ ȹယາȦࣺɂಘາɁɣɦɀȞɥă This inrª is made up of four basic cubic forms out of sandalwood, which are held together by the cord passage on the sides, made out of solid silver. 135 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd 135 01.10.2008 12:11:36 6 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 088 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 136 Inrª ۗᧀ 18th century 79 x 105 x 30 mm ȭɈ࿚ɈवɉɛɅܬഐɦɬᇦȯȵɥăಡोɉ ႨɁɢȩܬഐɦɅɩɦɀȞɥࣸߓɅɈȽɂȽɀ Ȟɥăȱȥȱ௫ငɈཔɉۗᧀɈཱྀᢦɅɥɢȠɅಜ ɣɦɀȞɥăᆏൌโɄ܀ɂࣸိޤɈྫ੧Ʉ༜Ɉ࠰ ɅਗޤɁऋ௫Ɉ౺ȧဘȦএȯɦɀȞɥăȭɦ Ʌཱȱɀ൨੮Ɉઽ౬ɂ௫ȬɉᄪᅙଉࡉɅॽɣɦ ɥɢȠɄʵ˃ʠʄ˃ဇɈ൨੮ɅၝȽɀȞɥăࣸଉɈ ำɛɉɅྦปĂ29౦ࡢɈɉɂȪɧɬࠆȩᆜɬ ȱɀȞɥă At first the form of this piece leads one to suspect it is a tobacco pouch. The design also leans toward the traditional gold leather work often used in Japan for the manufacture of tobacco pouches. It is however, above all, the division of the upper compartment into several smaller compartments, which allows this object to be classified as an inrª. Various mythical creatures are depicted in shishiaimakie, between sculptured clouds and stylized waves, put on in fine gold-hiramakie. The postures and the way the motif has been carried out leans again toward the Portuguese designs, often to be found on lacquer work for export. The ojime in gold lacquer shows cranes in flight and pine trees, the box woodnetsuke from the eighteenth century, portrays a dragon wound about itself. 136 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd 136 01.10.2008 12:11:36 6 Uhr Uhr Bildband_108_161_KW 24.09.2008 15:11 Uhr Seite 137 Inrª ۗᧀ 089 Early 18th century 71 x 56 x 23 mm ȭɈɅɉ17౦ࡢɈྌฑɅॽɣɦɥɢȠɄĂྌ ᅕૺɈູȦഽȩॽɣɦɥăూုɈငယɉฑɈᄄ ۻळĂວᅕɅൌɬȩɇɣȵȹ۫ᆛɜȭɈᅕૺɈ๙ຕโ Ʉ൨੮ɁȜɥăჹᅕɈငယɅܨȽȹྫ੧ɄީɈʺʎɼ ʇɅɢɤʵ˃ʠʄ˃ɈູఋȦࣅɛɣɦɀȞɥăɄಆ ࣸɈȞၫɉൌɈകఄɈᆶĂɈఋ෮ɂ෮ሆȱĂ ȜɘɤํळโɁɄȞఋ෮ɬȭɈۗᧀɅᅇȢɀȞɥă തჶɅɉજখɈ༗ᄐȦɣɦȹࣺࠣɂჶɈ࿃ฆȱ ȦȜɥăಭືɂࣺɈำɛɉ۫ᆛĂಭືɂࣸɈᄢ ɉഐჹᅕɂȦ࿑ȥɦɀȞɥă Together on this inrª are many features characteristic of the Namban-style, as they are to be found, chiefly, on Namban-tsuba from the seventeenth century. The arrangement of the decorative cartouches has been taken from the mokkª-form of tsuba, and also the winding rain dragons are a classical subject of this style. The “Portuguese” character is reinforced by the fine mother of pearl mosaic, which conforms to the contours of the cartouches. The predominant use of aokin harmonizes with the brown tone of the overall decor, and lends the piece a rather untypical coloration for an inrª. The cord runs through solid silver loops with an engraved tomoe-pattern, flanked by demon masks. The ojime out of sentoku and silver, shows a rain dragon, the ryusa manju out of sentoku and gold, flower arabesques and a bird. 137 Lay_BiBa_108_161.indd Lay ay_ y_BiBa_108_161.indd 1.indd 13 137 7 01.10.2008 1.10.2008 12:11:36 12:11:36 Uhr Uhr
