A BIG THANK YOU to our Sponsors for 2016!
We had a great time out at Island Lake this summer for
our Kids Kamp 2016! We’d like to take a moment to
thank our sponsors, who without them, we wouldn’t be
able to run this program: Vibe Credit Union, ITC,
Busch’s and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan! I’d
also like to thank our dedicated staff who really shined
this summer. Our camp directors, Julie Kapler and Ryan
Johnson and counselors, John Kochanek, Ashley Oosterdale, Jacqueline Rogge, Shelby Schulz, Alyssa Jawor,
Cheri Campbell and Alex Barshw. And lastly, the many
children who attended a few days, weeks or more this
summer.
We had a full camp this summer, hitting maximum capacity almost every week. We loved spending time
with all the campers and can’t wait to hope to see them
again next summer for more great memories!
If your child attended camp, be sure to look for an
emailed survey link! One lucky responder will win a
free week of camp for one child during Summer of
2017!

COACHES CODE OF CONDUCT
PURPOSE
This code of conduct has been developed by the SLARA to clarify and distinguish approved and accepted professional, ethical and moral behavior from that which is detrimental to the development of children within the
SLARA programs.
POLICY
Coaching is a privilege offered and granted to individuals who perform capably during SLARA sanctioned and
affiliated activities. It carries with it an obligation for each individual coach to uphold and promote the stated
goals and objectives. Any conduct considered unethical or a conflict of interest shall be subject to discipline by
the SLARA.
ARTICLE I – RESPONSIBILITIES TO PLAYERS





The coach shall never place the value of winning over the safety and welfare of players.
Coaches shall instruct players to play within the written laws of the game and within the spirit of the game at
all times.
Coaches shall not seek unfair advantage by teaching deliberate unsportsmanlike behavior to players.
Coaches shall not tolerate inappropriate behavior from players regardless of the situation.
Coaches shall direct players to seek proper medical attention for injuries and to follow the physician’s instructions regarding treatment and recovery.
ARTICLE II – RESPONSIBILITY TO THE SLARA


Adherence to all SLARA rules and policies. It is the responsibility of each coach to know and understand
these rules.
Any problems that cannot be resolved between coaches should be referred to the appropriate SLARA staff
member.
ARTICLE III – RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE LAWS OF THE GAME





Coaches shall be thoroughly acquainted with and demonstrate a working knowledge of the Laws of the
Game.
Coaches are responsible to assure their players understand the intent as well as the application of the
Laws.
Coaches must adhere to the letter and spirit of the Laws of the Game.
Coaches are responsible for their players’ actions on the field and must not permit them to perform with intent of causing injury to opposing players.
The coach must constantly strive to teach good sporting behavior.
ARTICLE IV – RESPONSIBILITY TO OFFICIALS




Officials must have the support of coaches, players and spectators. Coaches must always refrain from criticizing officials in the presence of players or spectators.
Professional respect, before, during and after the game must be mutual. There must be no demeaning dialogue or gestures between official, coach or player.
Coaches must not incite players or spectators or attempt to disrupt the flow of the game.
Comments regarding an official should be made in writing to the SLARA.
ARTICLE V – OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES





The behavior of coaches must be such as to bring credit to themselves and the SLARA.
While the concept of rivalry is wholly embraced, it cannot take precedence over exemplary professional conduct.
The attitude and conduct of the coach towards officials, players, spectators and coaches must be controlled
and undemonstrative.
It is unacceptable for a coach to have any verbal altercation with an official, opposing coach or bench before, during or after the game.
Coaches must use their influence on spectators that demonstrate intimidating and/or unacceptable behavior
towards officials, player (s) and opposing team members.

This offering details the necessary steps to develop a
personal and family emergency preparedness plan.
Some of the preparedness/survival industry is fantasy
based (like zombie apocalypse) with little basis in reality. This program will remove the fantasy by using a risk
analysis approach to understanding the real threats
Michigan families face, how to approach preparing for
those threats, and how to maximize preparedness for
multiple threat types. This course focuses on having
preparations for at least 3 days of in-home sheltering,
preparing the home for typical Michigan threats, as well
as for contingencies if the home becomes uninhabitable.
Trainees will participate in one team exercise involving
threat prioritization and explore contingency plans for
that threat. (1 session)

SWIM LESSON DESCRIPTIONS
South Lyon Recreation is offering a wide variety of swim classes based on the American Red Cross

level and readiness to learn. Students are required to provide proof of successful completion before
advancing to next level. All classes have enrollment limits. Registration must be done in advance at the
Recreation Office. Due to circumstances beyond our control, it may be necessary to reschedule or cancel some swim lessons.
PARENT — TOT (AGES 6 MONTHS & UP): Children
PARENT — CHILD (AGES 12 MONTHS TO 5): Instructors will assist parents in helping their child to become comfortable in the water and to begin teaching the child beginning water skills. This will be
done through play and structured instruction.
PRESCHOOL WITH PARENT (AGES 2 TO 5): Instructor
will assist parent in helping child to become comfortable in the water so they can be ready to swim.
These skills include getting adjusted to the water,
showing comfort maintaining a front and back float
position and demonstrating breath control.
PRESCHOOL (AGES 4 TO 5): Child adjustment and
orientation to the water without parent. This class
will also teach beginning water skills.
LEVEL 1 (AGES 4+) — INTRODUCTION TO WATER
SKILLS: Elementary water skills including basic water safety, putting face in water and an introduction
to proper breathing. The instructor will assist students with floating on front and back, front and back
crawl arms, and flutter kick with barbells.
LEVEL 2 — FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS: Students will learn to independently float, glide, kick
and swim on front and back. They will also become comfortable jumping into the shallow water
and retrieving objects under water with eyes
open. Students will also be introduced to treading water and basic water safety.
LEVEL 2+: For students who have passed Level II
but need additional stamina, breath control and
arm coordination before entering Level III.
LEVEL 3 — STROKE DEVELOPMENT: Students will learn
to coordinate front and back crawl, introduce dolphin
and breaststroke kicks and fundamentals of treading
water. Students will also learn rotary breathing, safe
diving rules and learn how to dive from the side.
More advanced rescue and water safety techniques
will be taught.
LEVEL 4 — STROKE IMPROVEMENT: Students will develop confidence in the strokes they’ve learned by
improving their technique and endurance. Students
will continue to build on the butterfly, and be introduced to the elementary backstroke, breaststroke
and elements of the sidestroke. Students will also
learn the basics of turns at the wall, compact and
stride dives, feet first surface dives, swimming underwater and the survival float as well as throwing assists
and caring for a choking victim. May be combined
with Level V.
LEVEL 5 — STROKE REFINEMENT: Students will refine
their performance of all the strokes (front and back
crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke
and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Students will also learn front and back flip turns, survival
swimming and rescue breathing. May be combined
with Level IV.
Note: For your comfort and safety, please
be sure that all swimmers have their hair

the pool. In the event of an electrical storm,
all activities will be suspended or canceled.
If class is canceled due to weather, mechanical failure, or other unexpected problems,
an effort will be made to schedule a makeup. If it is not possible to provide a makeup time, no partial refunds will be given.

Workout in the water to improve all major components of physical fitness – cardiovascular health,
strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition without joint-jarring impact and overheating
experienced on land/in the gym. Balance and range
of motion are also addressed during this aqua class.
It is a great workout for everyone from the deconditioned to the experienced athlete; all fitness levels
are welcome. The water’s resistance provides for
muscle toning of every muscle at every angle, in
every direction. Cardiovascular stimulation is emphasized in each session with options given to suit
everyone’s fitness level. The class is conducted in
chest-deep water, so no swimming skills are required. Jump on in, have fun, splash around and do
something fantastic for your health. This is one form
of exercise that provides it all and can be done for
your entire life.

FOUNDATIONS OF CREATIVE VISION
~ STAFF
Our eight year curriculum was created by a group of
educators, designers and fine artists who know that
learning to see and create visual images is now recognized as essential to a child’s learning process and
development of critical, cognitive brain-training skills.
With lessons in fine art, graphic design and cartooning, it is based on drawing skill sets that form the core
foundation for all of the visual arts. By teaching children how to break down complex objects into basic,
elemental shapes, they learn how to deconstruct and
reconstruct images using a variety of engaging and
relevant subject matter. Students experience increased levels of mastery and confidence ….while
having tons of fun! Please visit: www.cogart-kb.com

**REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 2017**
This year of SLARA youth basketball will build on the new and
exciting changes made in 2016! Customer feedback has influenced positive changes that will be incorporated this year!
A new age division has been added which will lead to a more
balanced roster and playing time for everyone! Sayre Elementary will continue to be used as a game site so more
teams are able to be included in the league. Practice times
will be adjusted to add more time options and open up space
for teams that need isolated gym time.
GRADES K — 1 LIL’ HOOPSTERS: This co-ed league is made to
introduce your youngster to team basketball. It is purely instructional with a set of relaxed rules set up to not only teach
each child the fundamentals of the game, but give them an
opportunity to be a part of the offense. As an added benefit,
coaches are allowed to coach on the game floor so they can
instruct and help the game progress.
GRADES 2 — 3 ENTRY LEAGUE: This co-ed league is made with
a set of relaxed rules to get players used to playing competitive basketball. Players who are just starting out or who are
not quite ready for the experienced league are encouraged
to sign up for this level. The league has all the same qualities
of the experienced league, just with a more relaxed set of
rules that focus on the fundamentals and game play aspect.
GRADES 2 — 3 EXPERIENCED LEAGUE: This co-ed league is for
players who have been involved with competitive basketball
for a few seasons. This league will have a stricter set of rules
that will get players ready to advance in the sport. This
league also utilizes a 9 foot rim compared to 8 feet for the
entry league.
GRADES 4—5: This age level is separated by a boys league
and a girls league. It is the first league where they will have
use of a full sized court for games. The rules are the SLARA
rules that were put in place last year, which have no special
restrictions. This league is set to teach the players the skills
necessary to continue playing at the next level all while fostering their love of the game.
GRADES 5 — 6 BOYS: This is a group
that is the next step up
from the grades 4 — 5 league. 5th graders who are experienced in basketball are encouraged to join as well as all 6th
graders. This league focuses on the advancement of skills
and getting your child prepared to continue their playing
career at the middle school level.
GRADE 6—7 GIRLS: This grade level is to continue the development of skills and abilities and get girls ready for the next
step. Due to the limited participation in this age level we
need at least 16 participants to run and will not accept specific team requests.
Players will be divided into teams by the Recreation Office to
play other children within the community. Teams practice
once a week between Monday — Friday, and play games on
Saturdays. All players receive a team t-shirt. Games officiated by students of both South Lyon High Schools.
Volunteer coaches are needed. Coaches meeting will be
held at 7:15p.m. on Monday, January 9 in the gym at Hardy Elementary School. The meeting will include instruction and distribution of materials. If you would like to

horse with our professional instructors. Students will learn to walk and trot in this class.
TINY TOT LESSONS (AGES 4-6): This hands-on learning program gives young children
their first riding experience and introduction to ponies and horses in a safe environment with a professional instructor and a personal helper. Children will learn about
caring for their horses by grooming, saddling and feeding our miniature horses.
INTRODUCTION TO HORSES (AGES 6—SENIORS): Hands-on time with an instructor and
horse. Learn to groom, saddle and ride with confidence with our well versed and safe
school horse. Join us as many times as you like. Students age 6-7 must be accompanied by a parent (no cost for parent).
ADULT BEGINNER LESSONS (AGES 17—ADULT): Looking to try a new and healthy activity? Riding could be the answer. When riding you use your leg and core muscles to
maintain balance and direct your horse. Each lesson will build on the last, as you
increase your ability to maintain balance and control your horse at a walk and trot.
SENIOR RIDING LESSONS (AGES 50+): Whether you’ve never ridden a horse before or
you’re an expert, we will get you moving with the horses. Many people with joint problems, arthritis, and low muscle tone improve their overall health with therapeutic riding.
Grooming and caring for your horse is a pleasure everyone enjoys. Extended mounting
blocks are used to make it easy to get on and off your horse. A certified therapeutic
riding instructor will teach the class.

Students will use LEGO® bricks, axles, pulleys, gears, and
motors to create fun and interactive models. Students love
our interactive Bricks 4 Kidz models. This unit is all about
the fun of doing something with what you’ve built. From a
spinning top to a spin art model, kids will love playing
with their creations! But don’t worry, we sneak in lots of
learning, too – understanding probability in the “3-in-arow” game model and learning about friction and symmetry with the spinning top lesson. Each lesson demonstrates concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics (STEM). All models are tailored toward
your child’s age. Each student will take home a custom
mini figure at the end of the session. (5 sessions)

Dive into the history and mechanics of favorite amusement park rides in this imaginative unit. Students will
construct a new model each week such as a Carousel
Swing, Tilt a Whirl, Loop de Loop ride, Swing boat ride,
and Merry Go Round. Each class begins with a teacherled discussion related to the model of the day. Lessons
incorporate principles of physics, described in a way
children can understand, such as “G-force” inertia and
momentum, as well as math concepts such as “there are
360 degrees in a circle”. These engaging lessons will
give students an understanding of the physical forces
they experience every day. All models are tailored
toward your child’s age. Each student will take home a
custom mini figure at the end of the session. (5 sessions)
