Connection November/December 2013 Special Dates: Mass of All Saints November 1 November 4 1:45 dismissal Knuth’s Korner Pledge Faith In Action Kickoff on Wednesday, November 6 We have completed one quarter of the year, and our Falcons have once again made their teachers and their parents proud. Several hundred students earned grades that qualified them for Honor Roll, and some of our most talented seniors started hearing from prospective colleges and universities. This generation of Falcons is clearly living into our tradition of academic excellence. Still more exciting is the energy in the building around community service and an intentional sharing of talent, time and treasure. Student and faculty led initiatives have brought cheer and goodwill to disadvantaged children in Detroit and to persons with disabilities in Wayne County and comfort to active and retired military families and to families surviving cancer. PSO Meeting November 11, 7 p.m. Junior Parent Night November 14 Senior Retreats-November 13-15 Mass of Remembrance, Wednesday, November 20 Fall Play “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged” November 21-24 High School Placement Test for 8th graders on Saturday, November 23. Register by 7:30am December 11 Financial Aid Night Finally, November is all about Thanksgiving. This is the beginning of the season of gratitude. I am grateful to be leading a community that takes time to appreciate the many ways that God continues to bless us. I am most thankful for the miraculous recoveries that some members of our community have experienced in the face of challenging odds. I want to share with you an email I received from Katie Nemes, mother of junior Laura Nemes ‘15 Laura made it into the last race of the season yesterday afternoon. She did FABULOUS! Here she is at the last 100 yards of the race. Laura was one of the last to cross the finish line, but her team had her back – and you can see them all behind her, cheering her on as she makes the final sprint home. They were surrounding her for the final ¼ mile and then let her fly to the finish. Needless to say I was sobbing, along with her coaches and many of the parents. Shows you what a GREAT group of girls we have on our cross country team!!! For all these reasons, I am proud to be a Falcon! Let’s keep up the good work, the energy and the solidarity all year long. Get fired up, Falcons! Peggy Knuth ‘72 Principal Laura Nemes-Falcon Strong Each October, the Catholic High School League honors the best in athletics and academics at the Prep Bowl. This year, on October 26 Divine Child High School teachers received special recognition for their years of service to Catholic education at Ford Field. The counseling department has already had many successful events including, Senior Parent Night, Freshman Parent Night, Sophomore Parent Night, and Testing Day. In addition, representatives from over 30 colleges from across the country have visited Divine Child High School this year so far! We are looking forward to many more events throughout the school year. There have been a few changes in the Counseling Department for this school year. Sadly, Mrs. Jenn Vanderveen will no longer be at Divine Child. She took a counseling position in Birmingham. However, we are happy to welcome Ms. Amanda Naoum to our Counseling Department. Ms. Naoum will be working with 10th-12th graders with last names beginning with L through Z. Test day for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students went well. Scores should be back by early December and will be returned to your student before the holiday break. A counselor will go over and explain the score report with your student. A companion workbook that explains in writing “how to use your score report” will be given to your students along with their test booklet and score report. Please go over the test and score report with your student. Contact your student’s counselor with any questions. The EXPLORE and PLAN tests are great indicators of future scores on the ACT. Junior parent night is scheduled for Thursday, November 14 at 7:00pm in the auditorium. Students and parents are required to attend. Counselors will be going over a timeline for junior year, ACT information, and present a Naviance tutorial. There will also be other speakers as well. Those who attend will qualify to receive a wristband allowing your student to participate in a jeans day on a future date. Sophomore and Junior Students: Remember to use Naviance! This is a great planning tool for college and you can earn online credit by completing the checklist of activities. When completed, bring to counselor for verification. You can also use the FREE ACT Prep and college search features to start preparing for the future. http:// connection.naviance.com/divinechs The ACT is not offered at Divine Child High School. The Upcoming ACT dates are December 14, 2013, February 8, 2014, April 12, 2014, and June 14, 2014. Students must take the ACT sometime during their junior year. Visit www.actstudent.org to register for the test. Senior Students: Please pay close attention to application and scholarship deadlines. Seniors and senior parents, please check Naviance regularly for new events, scholarships, and college visits. Remember all transcript and letter of recommendation requests need to me requested through Naviance. Students, remember to verify that the materials you request are sent before deadlines approach. Remember to send your teachers a thank you note if they write you a letter of recommendation. Life strategies groups will begin soon and will be run by our social worker, Mrs. Leslie Rohr. Look for more information coming soon. Please make sure that your updated email address and phone numbers are on Edline so you do not miss important emails and texts! -The Counseling Department Link Crew Update Page 3 Throughout the first quarter Link Leaders conducted activities with their adopted freshmen to help them with their academic and social transition into high school. From Orientation in August, Tail Gate prior to the September 13 home football game, Freshman Float Frenzy Party & Scary Movie Night the Link Crew Leaders have watched their “Fledgling Falcons” grow in confidence. After the first quarter report cards, the Link Crew will sponsor a rather unusual ice cream social, “The 100 ft. Sundae” during the course of a long homeroom, an event which will evoke fond memories in the Class of 2017. Link Leaders make weekly contact with their frosh by using a unique and often times funny “Question of the Week”. The Link Crew Birthday Blasters decorate frosh lockers on their special day. For those birthdays falling in the summer months, the Birthday Blasters will decorate on the half birthday to make sure no one is forgotten. Looking forward to the second quarter we have planned a school wide Turkey Trot Scavenger Hunt the evening of November 26. The Christmas Chain competition is on for December 6. Wrapping up the first semester we will assist the frosh in studying for Final Exams through a “Cram & Cocoa” study session on January 11. Your PSO board is happy to report that PSO Meeting attendance has been at all-time record highs! And we cannot thank those who attend enough for their support and input! We are hoping that even more parents come and get involved in future PSO meetings and activities! Our meetings are the best place to get up to date information on all DCHS happenings. The year continues to be filled with great events and support for DCHS students and faculty. Our wonderful event committees, class liaisons and their class parents have generously supported the parent / student meetings, Back to School Night, The Welcome Freshman Class Parent dinner, DCHS Families Mass and the Fall Open House. Your community spirit continues to grow and represent the best of DCHS class parents, and we are all so grateful for your involvement! PSO’s most significant accomplishment this year has been the initiation of the Parent Prayer Partner Program. An email was sent out from class liaison parents to parents in their respective classes. Parents were asked to reply if they would be interested in praying for students in their child’s class throughout the year. There has been a wonderful response to this program from class parents! It was certainly no surprise from our faith filled community! Many thanks to all who have committed to this program and will be praying for our DCHS students- it is sure to be a source of guidance and comfort to them as they go through the year! If you are interested in joining the Prayer Partners for your class- please contact your class liaison or a member of the PSO board. The next few weeks are busy ones for the PSO “team”. A dinner will be hosted by our Event Committee for our dedicated faculty during conferences, there is another Parent and Student meeting night, Mrs. Knuth will be joining us at our November 11 th meeting and the Sophomore class will be hosting a welcome breakfast for students coming to DCHS to take the High School Placement Test. Then December will be upon us in a blink of an eye! As is obvious from our schedule; PSO and its parent support are so important to the DCHS community! With that in mind, it seems important to remind everyone that at the close of the 2013-14 school year, the current PSO board will complete its term of service. A new group of parents will need to step forward and take its place. It is never too early to begin the process of discernment, so please consider becoming a PSO board member. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time here at DCHS, and I am sure other board members feel the same. Not only do you get an opportunity to give back to your school community, but you get a chance to meet and work with the wonderful parents at DCHS and make friends along the way. If you are interested in volunteering to assume a PSO leadership role please let a current board member know. We would like to begin a transition in April to maintain the good flow of communication and familiarize new members with the processes established over the past year. Thank you in advance for joining the PSO Team!! As we look forward to Thanksgiving, Advent and the blessing of Christmas, your PSO board would like to again express its gratitude for your involvement and support. We truly are grateful for the opportunities PSO has brought us- especially the gift or working with and getting to know so many parents in our DCHS community. May Thanksgiving be a time of joyous reflection on your blessings, Advent a time of contented preparation and Christmas a blessed and wondrous time welcoming the Divine Child again into your hearts and lives!
