The Executive Report
By Junia Isiminger
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Milking Shorthorn
Office and the Isiminger Family!!! This is my favorite time of the year
because we are reminded to be thankful at Thanksgiving and then reminded of our Savior at Christmas! It is a time of year, that reminds us
of our blessings, gives us hope, restores our faith and shares the love of
Christmas! How can you not love this season!
I have spent the last couple of months being thankful for you, the
breeders, and your patience and understanding, as I work through learning this job. I have been
thankful for the many of you who have helped me in one way or another. I was very thankful for those of you who volunteered to help at World Dairy Expo in the booth. Our booth is
required to be manned at all times and thanks to Tom Landrum, Kathy Whitted, Rodney Johnson, Mike Halpin, Billy Lattire and Brian Pederson for stepping up and helping me. I couldn’t
have done it without you!
I have also had the privilege to meet many of you at the various national shows and to witness you putting your best foot forward showing our incredible breed. This year, other breeds
were stepping up and taking notice of the strides that our breed has accomplished over the past
10-15 years and you should all be proud of those accomplishments. In the show ring, I have
witnessed our blessings and the hope of the future of our breed.
My faith and love for the Milking Shorthorn breed has been strengthened over the past six
months. I have learned many new things about what happens in the office to make the organization run smoothly. Although I don’t have everything worked out – as I work through each
area, I am restored with faith that I will get there! Many of you have had many questions about
membership, DNA, Embryos, billing, and classification just to name a few. I am working hard
to put an organized system in place to have everything running much more efficiently and following all of the policies of the board. To do that, it does take time and there will be bumps
along the way, but I am always available to answer questions and to help you work through the
system, because I love this breed and I want to see it continue to move forward.
May each of you be blessed this Holiday Season 'And to All, a Good Night!'
President's Corner
By Casey Weiss
I was able to attend two of the four Milking Shorthorn National Shows and I must say that
the quality of our show animals is the best it has ever been and our collective improvement is
being noticed by other dairy breeds. In particular, many breeders commented that the heifer
show at the World Dairy Expo was the best set of Milking Shorthorn heifers they had ever
seen exhibited.
Deserving special mention is Hard Core Premum Fire Maid-EXP who, at the All-American
Dairy Show, broke through as the Supreme Champion heifer over all breeds. As a breed,
we have been banging on this door for several years to come up just short of our Supreme
Champion goal. This championship brings recognition towards our entire breed and verifies
our improvement. The logical next step for our breed is a National Show Supreme Champion
cow. Can it happen? Yes. Will it happen? Yes. Will it happen soon? I don’t know, but
we do have the correct ingredients in our cow herds and in our nitrogen tanks and with an
abundance of great heifers our chances will only increase.
As breeders of Milking Shorthorns we must continue to make improvements with our
animals and we must make these improvements at a faster rate than our competitor breeds
if we want to be a viable option for dairy production in the future. I was disappointed with
the new 2014 DHI Herd Milk Averages by breed data that was published in the October 25th
issue of Hoard’s Dairyman magazine.
This report card tells us where we currently rank as compared to the other purebred dairy
cattle breeds. While this is not a complete picture of profitable production as it doesn’t include
the reduced feed costs, superior reproductive abilities and long productive life of our breed , it
does tell us that Milking Shorthorns trail the other breeds in milk production and in component
percentages.
In my personal opinion, we do not need to have the same production as the Holstein to be
viable, but if we are not going to have the black and white cows’ production level, we need
to have higher component percentages than we do now. Component improvement should be
a priority for all Milking Shorthorn breeders.

Morgan Clark. Lady is sired by Innisfail
Red Robin and was also named Honorable
Mention Grand Champion of the Show.
Premier Exhibitor went to Greg &
Marcia Clark of Cornish Flat, New Hampshire. Seven class winners, including the
Grand and Reserve Champions, were at
least partially owned by one of the Clark
family. John Stuart Rowe of Davis, California, was named the Premier Breeder. From
the other side of the country, Rowe’s Innisfail breeding showed a strong influence, as
not only the top three Five Year Olds were
bred by Rowe, but also the first place Aged
Cow and Senior Two-Year-Old, as well as
several other high-placing animals.

By Cheri Oechsle
T
he International Milking Shorthorn
show was held over two days in conjunction with the World Dairy Expo
in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 30
and October 1. Taking on the official duties
of judge was Michael Heath of Westminster, Maryland, and his associate, Jack Lomeo, Jr. of Lowville, New York. 197 head
were exhibited in the two-day show.
It was an impressive group of heifers
that paraded across the red hot shavings in
Madison on Tuesday afternoon. After placing over 120 heifers, Heath narrowed down
his Junior Champion selection to the fancy
first-place Fall Calf, the powerful winning
Fall Yearling and the ultra-dairy Spring
Calf. As in typical Heath fashion, his comments were as entertaining as his selection process as he began his reasons with
“Wow, the water has been deep today and
the quality has been fine….everyone in the
stands should take a look at these animals.
The Milking Shorthorn show is strong!
That was a strong class of fall calves today,
and this calf really razzed me up. Today she
has more depth of rib, more overall balance
than the fall yearling. The fall yearling goes
over the March calf with a bit more front
end.”
Junior Champion honors went to the fall
calf, Lazy M Pirelli Got It-EXP exhibited by
Lazy M Farm LLC, the Mike and Herman
Maier family of Stitzer, Wisconsin. She is
a September 2 calf sired by Gold Mine MD
Pirelli. Topp-View Moonshine Alexa, exhibited by Topp-View Farm, Botkins, Ohio,
was the Reserve Junior Champion. The 2013
Unanimous All-American Fall Calf is sired
by Moonshine and backed by a Blue Spruce
with over 23,000M. Hills-Acre Nation
Kissnhugs-P, the March calf, was tapped
for Honorable Mention. She is owned by the
Bob Hill family of Williamsburg, Indiana.
10
Winner of the National Futurity No.
57 and later named Intermediate Champion
was Corstar Lovely Lady EXP ET exhibited by Cory Salzl of Litchfield, Minnesota.
Also first-place Senior Two-Year-Old, she
is a Red Robin backed by four All-American dams. She is a two-time All-American
nominee. Reserve Intermediate Champion
honors went to the first-place Junior ThreeYear-Old, Kuszmar Megadeth Poppy,
owned by John and Marjorie Kuszlyk of
Batavia, New York. This 88-point Megadeth daughter was named Grand Champion
of the Eastern National and is backed by
two more Excellent dams. Honorable Mention went to the second-place Junior ThreeYear-Old and winner of the World Dairy
Expo Futurity, North Stars Mega Peanut
EXP ET VG88, also owned by Cory Salzl.
Judge Heath’s reasons began with “This
two-year-old, the first time she walked into
the ring, just beautiful with extreme combination of balance and style, feet and legs
and a great mammary system. We’re going
to follow her with the junior three who just
isn’t quite as feminine in the front end but
has great pop to the rib and I admire the
length and frame over the Honorable Mention.”
Heath and Lomeo pulled four out for
contention of the Senior Champion honors:
the winning five-year-olds, the aged cow
and the lifetime cow. “This is an easy decision for me,” said Heath. “That aged cow
just did it for me. She combines great legs,
udder and great dairyness, followed by that
five-year-old with the silkiness and then
the production cow for Honorable Mention.” Hard Core Rebel Rockette EX90,
owned by the Cor-Bloo Syndicate of Cory,
Indiana, was tapped for Senior Champion
honors. She is a Pinehurst Rebel 9th daughter out of a 3E-95 five-time All-American
Milking Shorthorn Journal Holiday 2014
nominee. A previous All-American nominee, R-Generations Othello Lust EXP 2E92
was named Reserve Senior Champion for
owners Jason and Jessica Kennedy of Cochranton, Pennsylvania. Honorable Mention honors went to the Lifetime Merit
class winner, Innisfail RO Lady 7088-EXP
EX91, owned by Logan Lattire of Lattire
Twilite Farm, Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
As the music for “Final Countdown”
played, Heath intensified the already electric atmosphere as he geared up to name
his Grand and Reserve Grand Champions
of the national show. “What a tremendous
group of animals and a beautiful line up of
animals from this Junior Champion all the
way through the Senior Champions,” he
said. After tapping his winners, he returned
to the mic with these comments, “This aged
cow just has so much class about her. Her
head shows so much breed character, she’s
long and lean, open ribbed with a sweet udder and great legs. Then this Senior Two for
Reserve has such a big, big future ahead of
her.”
Named Grand Champion was the firstplace aged cow and Senior Champion, Hard
Core Rebel Rockette. Taking the Reserve
Champion banner was the Intermediate
Champion, Corstar Lovely Lady EXP ET
and the Reserve Intermediate Champion
and winning Junior Three, Kuszmar Megadeth Poppy, was designated Honorable
Mention.
The Total Performance winner was
Hard Core MRB Lizzie 3E94, owned by
Keith Fisher and Allen Hess of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania. She has at 5-10 313D
24,227M 858F 703P. The Nasco International Type and Production award was presented to Blue Spruce HTA Melody Mya
3E93, owned by Blue Spruce Farm and Jason Robinson of New Holland, Ohio, with
International Show
6-00 305D 25,160M 979F 717P. Premier
Breeder of the show was Stuart and Emily Rowe of Innisfail Milking Shorthorns,
California. Premier Exhibitor was Halpin

By Cheri Oechsle
C
raig Padgett of Waynesburg, Kentucky, had his work cut out for
him in the Winter National Show
in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 10.
Exhibitors paraded 105 animals across the
colored shavings.
The show began with the young cows
and after some very strong classes, Padgett
pulled his top three cows for Intermediate
Champion contention: the winning junior
two and senior two-year-olds and the junior
three-year-old. “I love the width of chest
and openness along with the udder attachment on this senior two-year-old,” said the
judge. “And the junior two is nicer on her
feet and legs than the junior three which
will be honorable mention today.” Hard
Core Othello Margarita was named Intermediate Champion for breeder and owners the Fishers of Hard Core Farm in New
Enterprise, Pennsylvania. At 90-points
she is sired by Othello and was the 2013
Unanimous All-American Fall Yearling in
Milk. Reserve Intermediate honors went to
Ecuafarm Zues Patty EXP owned by Owen
Halpin of Cullom, Illinois. The first place
Junior Two-Year-Old is sired by Zeus.
The winning Junior Three-Year-Old and
Honorable Mention was Michaels Nitro
Chilli 'VG86' owned by Jeremy Kinslow of
Smiths Grove, Kentucky.
Senior and Grand Champion honors
were bestowed on the first-place FourYear-Old, Redien Acres JR VG89 @ 2-05,
owned by Jacob Baker of Homeworth,
Ohio. This Ohio State Fair Champion is
sired by Bar-D Kuzmar Clay. Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion honors went to the Five-Year-Old, Halpins
RuthAnne 2E92, owned by Halpin Farms,
Cullom, Illinois. No stranger to the show
circuit, she was the All-American FourYear-Old last year. “There’s a lot of quality
12
about this four-year-old, a good udder, definite crease and clean about the head. And I
love the uphill run on the five-year-old who
will be Reserve today,” said Padgett.
Following the cow classes, an outstanding group of heifers were exhibited. At the
end of the day it was the fancy Supreme
Champion of the Eastern Show, Hard Core
Premum Fire Maid EXP, the first-place
Fall calf, that took top honors of the heifer show. Owned by Peter Vail, Frank and
Diane Borba and Hillpoint Partners, she
topped the Spring For Colors sale earlier in
the year. Reserve Junior Champion honors
went to the first-place Winter Yearling, Innisfail R U Lady, owned by Trevor Clawson
of Ackley, Iowa.
The Total Performance Award was won
by Innisfail RO Lady 7088 EXP 2E91, with
4-06 305D 27,920M 818F 854P and owned
by the Lattires of Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Please keep all of this in mind the next time
you have a cow in heat. It does not matter if
you are breeding show cattle, milking cows
for a living, or raising calves on your dualpurpose cattle, we should all be striving to
improve our cattle and to make them better
for the long term benefit of the breed.

Lindsey Clark is the 17-year-old daughter of Greg and Marcia Clark from Cornish
Flat, New Hampshire. She was born and
raised on GMC Farm by her parents. She
has a sister named Brooke and two brothers, Gregory and Justin. Their farm average
classification is 90 points. She is a senior at
Lebanon High School where she plays basketball. She plays AAU ball throughout the
whole New England area. She has attended
many national conventions and shows since
she was nine.
Lindsey works on her farm milking, and
tending to heifers and young stock. She has
to get up early some mornings for milking
and she does chores each day. Clark loves
cleaning out the barn with the tractor. She
has been driving a tractor since she was
nine. The farm consists of five acres with
120 head of dairy cows that include Milking Shorthorn, Brown Swiss, and Holsteins.
GMC purchases all their feed from a neighbor friend.
~ by Nick Achen
Awards Clark has won in 2014 are
Grand Champion of the Junior shows at the
New York Spring Show, Northeast National Show and International Show. She had
the 2012 Grand Champion of the 4-H show
at the Eastern National Show and the 2007
Junior Champion of the National Junior
show.
Clark's favorite memory from her involvement with the Milking Shorthorns is
going to conventions and having fun with
all the juniors.
