Scott has engineered a balance of vertical compliance and lateral stiffness in both the rear triangle and the fork. - Vertical compliance is a measure of how smoothly a bike rides. By maximizing vertical compliance, SDS cancels road vibrations, increasing rider confidence, stability and comfort. - Lateral stiffness correlates to responsiveness during sprinting, acceleration, and climbing. 2 S-BEND CONSTRUCTION 3 C A R B O N F O R K F E AT U R I N G S D S 5 4 6 Each tube profile is designed to absorb both abrupt and high frequency vertical input with no compromise in lateral stiffness. We’ve created an original tube shape that allows controlled deformation in the rear triangle called an S-bend. The SDS rear stays enable this S-bend deformation via unique tube structure, thickness, and shape in specific sections of the chain stays, seat stays and fork. The new 330 gram (.72 lb) CR1 fork has an improved shape and carbon dropouts. Now featuring SDS, the CR1 fork provides maximum comfort without compromising steering control. It is lightweight and very stable, providing the utmost performance whether climbing or descending. 4 C R 1 | SL 1 3 DESIGN AND SHAPE The overall frame design combines fluidity with the mechanical concept. Smooth continuous lines extend from the head tube and along the top tube. Each portion of the frame and fork was designed in unison to create an esthetic that is both functional and visually appealing. 5 I M P ™ – I N T E G R AT E D M O L D I N G P R O C E S S 6 H M X- N E T C A R B O N F I B E R Our engineers have developed IMP™, the newest technology applied to carbon production. The toptube, headtube and downtube are produced in a single step using a top-secret process. Our proprietary process allows for lighter construction by removing 11% of the material from the headtube intersection. IMP™ also increases strength by utilizing high modulus stressed fibers with more precise fiber placement in critical areas. Additionally, our frames benefit from our Naked External Tubeset™ (NET™), which shaves precious grams by eliminating the outer cosmetic carbon layer. While we already use the proven HMF composite fiber on all our composite high-end bike models, we have improved upon conventional HMF material. This new fiber, which is produced exclusively for Scott, offers 20% more stiffness and is employed on all the areas that need additional rigidity. This new material also allows us to reduce weight and improve riding characteristics. 2 G R A M S O N LY PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION AERODYNAMIC PROGRAM DEFINITION BASED ON A SLA PROTOTYPE PROCESS PLASMA TT, A NEW DEVELOPMENT PROCESS When the project started in 2008, we agreed on a performance specification, including frame geometry, sizes, structural targets and practical issues for usability. The Plasma2 has some unique and original features which make sense aerodynamically. This provided a good starting point to develop the Plasma TT for Team Columbia HTC. Initially, we resurfaced the whole frame in CAD based on our experience in aerodynamics, and then we used CFD and other analytical techniques to validate various potential solutions. At the same time, the initial concepts were passed back to the engineers so that we could make sure that we could still achieve structural and practical objectives. The wind tunnel program was split into two tests so that we could come away from the first test with new data before repeating the whole process. This is what we call OFFICIAL BIKE SPONSOR in iterative development in the race car industry. To achieve acceptable accuracy, all development parts were manufactured using a rapid prototype process called SLA. The frame is modular so that, individual surfaces can be changed step by step during the wind tunnel test. Each one of these parts can be interchanged, and comparative runs were then made in the wind tunnel to assess the performance. Our final solution was the culmination of over 300 test runs and almost as many test parts. It’s also imperative that you model the real world conditions in the wind tunnel.
