“Along the way you pick up people who believe in you. You
hang on to those.”
- Bob Daniels
Last September we lost Bob Daniels.
Jeff Daniels and his family lost a husband, a dad, a grandpa.
The state, the city of Chelsea, the Purple Rose and thousands
of people throughout southeast Michigan and beyond lost a
great man. A friend. His humility, legendary generosity and
genuine concern for others were rare.
I have learned so much from this man, most of it through his
sons. Lessons I, and many, many others continue to take to
work with us every day.
He was always happier to give credit to others than to claim
it. He really wanted people to succeed. He dedicated a huge
part of his life to helping them do it. He always had time for
everybody he came into contact with. He was always sincere
with that time and was one of those rare people who, when
they spoke with you, made you feel like you were the most
important person in the room. You knew in your gut this man
was really interested in you and what you had to say. He instilled
confidence in everyone he spent time with. He listened.
Though we will miss him, we will be reminded of him often.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Kansas City, David appeared as drummer J.I. Allison in
The Buddy Holly Story at the American Heartland Theatre.
Thanks to Vicky, Zoey and Jonny - my favorite ensemble.

in life. He resides in Hamilton, Ohio and has worked at
Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, Cincinnati Shakespeare
Company, Human Race Theatre, New Edgecliff Theatre,

Theatre, among others. Two of his favorite roles have been
in Jeff Daniels’ plays, Boomtown (Stu) and Guest Artist
(Joseph Harris). Others include Long Day’s Journey Into
Night (James Tyrone), True West (Lee), Kicking a Dead
Horse (Hobart) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bottom).
LAUREN KNOX (Clara) is thrilled to be making her
professional debut on the Purple Rose Theatre stage. She
began this season as an apprentice and remains feeling
incredibly blessed to work alongside such an amazing
company of artists. Lauren received her BFA in Acting
and English from Oakland University and studied classical
theatre at the Hydrama Theatre in Greece. She’s had
both theatrical and film experience, but her favorite roles
include Katherine in Henry V (Water Works Theatre Co.),
Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing (Oakland University),
Teresa in Italian American Reconciliation (Epicenter
Theatre Co.) and Medea/ensemble in Medea (Hydrama).
Lauren is passionate about approaching theatre as the
Greeks did; she loves to be a part of a production that
sheds light into the darkness, makes music from the
tragic and finds beauty beneath the ashes. Thank you to
Guy and Michelle for believing in her, to the apprentices
for their tireless work and friendship, and to her family for
their encouragement, faith and love. Blessings!

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
From the beginning, The Purple Rose Theatre Company has aspired
to be a leading American theatre. Founded in 1991 by Jeff Daniels,
our mission has been to develop opportunities for Michigan and
Midwest theatre professionals while entertaining, enriching and
building a loyal following. Audience commitment to the company has
resulted in a fiscally solvent and highly respected arts and community
partnership.
The PRTC envisions an even brighter future with increased national
visibility and enriched economic and artistic health. Well-established
and critically acclaimed, The Purple Rose Theatre Company will
continue to encourage, create and produce the "New American Play."
The Purple Rose Theatre Company is a member of the Ann Arbor Area
Chamber of Commerce, the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, the
Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan, the Dexter Area Chamber
of Commerce and the Greater Jackson Chamber of Commerce.
Actors' Equity Association (AEA) was founded in 1913 as the first of
the American actor unions. Equity's mission is to advance, promote
and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our
society. Today, Equity represents more than 40,000 actors, singers,
dancers and stage managers working in hundreds of theatres across
the United States. Equity members are dedicated to working in the
theatre as a profession, upholding the highest artistic standards.
Equity negotiates wages and working conditions and provides a wide
range of benefits including health and pension plans for its members.
Through its agreement with Equity, this theatre has committed to the
fair treatment of the actors and stage managers employed in this
production.
AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO and is affiliated with FIA, an international
organization of performing arts unions. For more information, visit
www.actorsequity.org.

SPOTLIGHT ON
DEVELOPMENT
There are multiple ways you can give a financial gift to The Purple
Rose Theatre Company. One unique way is through a donation
of appreciated stock. There are many benefits to the donor while
supporting the theatre.
“Donating appreciated stock is a wonderful way to help the Purple
Rose Theatre. The theatre benefits from the full value of the gift,
and the donor receives a charitable deduction without incurring the
capital gains tax that would come from sale of the stock.”
- Long-time Purple Rose supporters, Ann Arbor
For more information on giving a gift of appreciated stock, please
contact Katie Frye Hammond at 734.433.7782 x15 or
hammond@purplerosetheatre.org.
