General Laboratory policies A. 1. General directions The General Laboratory Policies are valid for all natural science/technical laboratories of the University of Bremen. 8. 9. Anyone working in the laboratory is obliged to acknowledge these General Laboratory Policies before commencing their work or studies and to document this by means of a signature at the responsible administrative unit. While working with gaseous, liquid, solid or powdered hazardous substances, it is compulsory to observe the preventive measures given in the respective guidelines, handouts as well as accident prevention regulations (see appendix). Substances not proven to be harmless must be handled like hazardous materials. Information can be obtained from “Referat 07”. The General Laboratory policies are valid irrespective of existing special regulations. 2. Existing eating, drinking or smoking prohibitions in the laboratory area have to be strictly adhered to. 3. Anyone working in the laboratory is responsible for keeping it clean and orderly. 4. Users have to familiarize themselves with the safety equipment of the laboratories and its usage. 5. The prescribed protective clothing (lab coat, safety goggles, face protection, respirator mask, etc.) has to be worn at all times. Compressed gas cylinders may neither be stored nor kept in the laboratory. After finishing laboratory work, all gas, water and air lines that are no longer needed have to be closed. All movable containers with hazardous materials have to be taken to the respective storage facilities. 10. The disposal of hazardous waste is regulated by the „Richtlinie zur Handhabung, Sammlung und Abgabe von Abfällen an der Universität Bremen“. Further information is available from the waste management officer, Herr Reiner Lüdtke, telephone: 60090. 11. For all practical laboratory work falling within the scope of the General Laboratory Policies, a responsible person has to be specified in writing at the responsible administrative unit (department secretariat). Only employees of the university who have respective skills and expertise can be responsible persons in this sense. 7. Defective or damaged devices or equipment have to be turned off immediately. The respective person responsible for the laboratory has to be informed. During a general blackout, the only exhaust hoods to be used are those specifically marked and connected to the emergency power grid. Expectant mothers must inform the responsible professor of the pregnancy as early as possible. The responsible department supervisor will conduct a work space analysis. Employees additionally contact the “Dezernat 2”. B. Accident and Alarm Guidelines The following is valid independent of the fire safety regulations of the University of Bremen: 1. In case of an accident due to electricity or fire, the emergency switch should be engaged immediately (to stop electricity as well as gas supply). 2. Any accident has to be reported to the responsible professor or the responsible laboratory staff immediately. 3. Room ____________________ is available for first aid. Bremen, November 2009 Rektor Prof. Dr. Wilfried Müller A supervisor must ensure that a person working in isolation on critical or dangerous tasks during teaching and research has a second person within sight or earshot.
