Now how does this work? The idea was born from our first Irish dancing flashmob within the framework of “Wiesbaden tanzt 2011” – a lot of Irish dancers came to join us in Wiesbaden and went in small groups on a tour through the city centre of Wiesbaden. We danced just about everywhere … and then met again for the finale at the “Wiesbaden tanzt” open stage. For the finale we had some of our dancers on stage, and the rest of us mixed in with the audience… While we were dancing on stage, feet were literally moving everywhere – we had great fun! And then there were those dancers in Berlin who thought Wiesbaden was a bit far to travel... “We’ll dance the finale with you at Berlin Alexanderplatz, and we’ll dance a céilí afterwards!” We even counted in both groups simultaneously on our mobile phones … And that was the starting point for the flashmob idea for years to come: How many dancers can we get to join us? In 2013 we started using a choreography that can be danced as a jazz tap combination, or as an Irish step dance. In the same year we had our first international participation, with Bedale in Yorkshire, and Innsbruck in Austria. The idea is growing – how many dancers in how many cities can we get dancing together this time? Wiesbaden dances – Dance with us! How does it work? Step out on 20th September 2014 at 3:00 pm CET! The dancers here in Wiesbaden meet at our small stage in the morning and dance the choreography together for the first time. Then we split up into small groups and walk around the town, following a variety of routes and dancing a capella in any number of locations that tickle our fancy. This should be a short, intense and eye-catching performance for onlookers and passers-by before the group moves on to the next location. For the grand finale we all meet up at the main stage in Mauritiusplatz shortly before 3 pm. The flashmob choreography is part of the programme for the Fiddle & Feet School of Dancing and will not just be performed up on the stage but also among the members of the audience – bringing the whole of Mauritiusplatz to boiling point! At the same time as our finale, dancers in all the other cities will join in with the climax of the event as well. Either we will countdown to a synchronised start at 3 pm – or we will be in contact with the other cities by phone. We will see what is realistically feasible. Whether you also do a tour through your city’s centre, add a céilí into the bargain or organise other events around the flashmob only depends on your imagination and organisational skills. Seize the day… and let’s make it a great event for percussive dance in general and for your own dance group! And afterwards we put our videos up on YouTube and have a look at what all the others have achieved with it. We’re looking forward to it already! Join in – may the party be big! Best of luck to you all!
