Johnson, the May 1st commencement ceremony is the
beginning – not the end – of
her educational journey.
The 38-year-old Niles resident, who graduated with
honors, joined 327 other SMC
students who will be awarded
degrees and certificates during the college’s 43rd commencement.
“Earning a college degree
has always been a long time
goal for me,” Johnson wrote in
an essay for the EXCEL scholarship program at the college.
“I can remember when I was a
little girl I used to play ‘house’
and pretend that I was this big
business executive. I knew in
order to fulfill that dream that
I would need to go to college.”
Johnson, who is the
youngest of 14 siblings, will be
the first in her immediate
family to graduate from college. Her mother passed away
when she was two years old,
leaving her oldest brother to
raise the children.
“By furthering my education, I’ve been able to show my
family members and co-workers that it’s never too late to go
back to college,” Johnson said.

Paulette Johnson, of Niles, is among the 328 students who graduated May 1 from Southwestern Michigan College. Johnson will continue
her educational journey this fall when she begins working on her bachelor’s degree in business administration through Ferris State
University, located on SMC’s campus.

College hosted its 43rd
commencement ceremony May 1 in the gymnasium of
the Charles O. Zollar Building
on the Dowagiac campus. The
college conferred 328 associate
degrees and certificates to
SMC students.
In addition, Ferris State
University at Southwestern
Michigan College awarded 21
bachelor’s degrees during the
ceremony.
Michael Hansen, president
of Michigan Community
College Association (MCCA),
addressed graduates. As president of the MCCA, Hansen
represents the state’s 28 community colleges in Lansing.
Prior to coming to the MCCA,
Hansen worked for the
Michigan
Senate
Fiscal
Agency where he was the
agency’s chief analyst for community colleges. His professional
background
also
includes teaching in the public
school system. Hansen holds a
bachelor’s degree from the
University of Michigan and a
master’s
degree
from
Michigan State University.
The Rev. John Kasper, pastor of the First United
Methodist Church in
Dowagiac, gave the invocation
and benediction. The SMC

Stephanie Luke, left, gets a last minute adjustment to her graduation gown from Mandy Smith before
the 43rd commencement ceremony May 1 at Southwestern Michigan College. Both women are from
Dowagiac. Luke graduated with honors, earning her associate in science degree from SMC, while Smith
graduated during the ceremony from Ferris State University. Smith received a bachelor’s in business
administration and graduated with cum laude honors.
Symphonic Band, conducted
by Dr. Jonathan Korzun, and
Select Voices, under the direction of David Carew, provided
music for the ceremony.
A reception for the graduates, their families and friends
followed commencement in
the Student Activity Center of
the Charles O. Zollar Building.
SMC graduates received an
associate in arts (AA), an associate in science (AS), an associate in applied science (AAS), a
certificate (CER), or a specialty
certificate (SC). Some graduates earned two degrees, which

“I have a nephew who wasn’t
considering college because he
has a learning disability, so I
told him that everyone can go
to college, no matter what the
obstacles are. He’s almost done
with his freshman year and
although it’s been a challenge,
he’s so thankful that he made
the choice to go to college.”
Johnson’s determination to
get a college degree has also
inspired her 16-year-old son.
Her son wrote a paper for class
on who is his hero. He said it
was his mother for her tenancy
to go to college, work, and continue to raise a family.
“I was so shocked and
touched by what he wrote,”
Johnson said. “He talked about
all my responsibilities and how
proud he was of me. We talk
about college and I don’t tell
him what to do, but I try and
help him make the best deci-
GRADUATION
sion for him.”
Johnson will graduate with
an associate degree in arts with
an emphasis in business. She
will enter the business administration program this fall
through Ferris State University
here on the Southwestern
Michigan College campus. Her
goal is to walk during the May
2013 graduation ceremony at
SMC after she has earned her
bachelor’s degree.
“Education provides us with
the opportunity to learn and
May 13, 2010
expand our knowledge in a way
that we might not obtain
through a job. It enhances our
vocabulary, communication and
leadership skills to compete in
today’s job market,” Johnson
wrote in her essay. “After earning a bachelor’s degree, I plan to
seek employment in a challenging and fulfilling job, possibly in
the business department at a
not-for-profit organization or to
just build upon my experiences
in the financial/accounting
industry.
“Had I not decided to further my education, I wouldn’t
have compelled others to go to
college and I wouldn’t be able
to have more options concerning my career,” she continued.
“Most of all, I’m thankful that
I’ve been able to inspire my
nephew and son to pursue a
college degree because I will
have other relatives coming up
after them, then they can
inspire the one’s coming up
after them and this can go on
for generations to come.”

outhwestern Michigan
College recognized 102
students who graduated
with honors at the college’s
43rd commencement May 1.
The annual SMC Honors
Reception, held in the Fred L.
Mathews Conference Center
East, showcased students who
earned a cumulative grade
point average of 3.5 or higher.
“Every year Southwestern
Michigan College takes pride
in the quality of education it is
able to give its students,” said
college President Dr. David
Mathews, who welcomed the
students and their families and
friends to the event. “This
quality speaks for itself by the
number of students graduating with honors each year. It is
SMC’s goal to ensure its students have a solid educational
foundation when they transfer
to another university or enter
the workforce.”
Honor student Christiana
Dubs, of Berrien Center, was
also named to the All-Michigan
Academic Team and was recognized for her scholarly achievement in Lansing recently.
Dubs was nominated by the
SMC-chapter of the Phi Theta
Kappa International Honor
Society for her outstanding
academic performance and
service to the college and community. She received an AllMichigan Academic Team
medallion and was also nominated to the USA Today AllUSA Community College
Academic Team. She plans on
attending
Moody
Bible
Institute to study linguistics
after graduating from SMC.
The guest speaker for the
reception was Dr. James
Wierman, a Dowagiac physician in Internal Medicine, who
spoke on the elimination of
poverty. Dr. Wierman received
the Michigan State Medical
Society’s “Volunteers Who
Make a Difference” award in
2007 for more than 40 years of
service as a volunteer for medical work in Haiti and
Rwanda. He currently leads an
annual volunteer mission to
rural Haiti sponsored by St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church, in
Dowagiac, where he is a member and served on the vestry.
Musical entertainment was
provided by the college’s Select

Southwester Staff Report

outhwestern Michigan
College recently awarded
a total of $50,000 to students in EXCEL program
scholarships. The EXCEL
Program (Student Support
Services) is a federally funded
program funded by the U.S.
Department of Education. The
program is designed to support eligible students in
achieving personal and academic success while at SMC.
Each of the 50 EXCEL students received a $1,000 scholarship.
“SMC’s EXCEL program has
given you the opportunity to
succeed,” said Dr. David
Mathews, SMC president, who
welcomed the group. “As a
group, you have overcome
many obstacles. We would like
to commend you for your success. The college is proud of
you and what you have accomplished.”
To be eligible for the EXCEL
program, students must meet
one of the following criteria:
n First generation college student (neither parent earned a
bachelor’s degree)
n Low income, based on federal guidelines
n Have a documented disability
As members of the EXCEL
program, the students were
eligible for the scholarships
because they have demonstrated academic progress at SMC.
Also, part of the scholarship
application process, was an
essay that required students to
write on the person who they
thought has contributed the
most to the improvement of
society.
In her essay, “All That Really
Matters” Laurie Double, of
Niles, wrote about Renato
Aguilera, a professor and
research scientist with the
Department of Biological
Sciences at the University of
Texas, El Paso. Double
described Aguilera struggles
when he came to the United
States from Mexico not knowing the English language.
“No hay mal que por bien no
venga,” Double wrote of what
Aguilera’s motto is for overcoming his feeling of being
underestimated. Translated
Aguilera’s words mean “there
is always something good that
can come from something that
we may see as bad.”
The scholarships were
awarded during a celebration
held at the Fred L. Mathews
Conference Center East on the
Dowagiac campus. Guest
speaker for the event was Ria
Thomas, a math instructor in
the college’s Developmental
Studies department. Also, recognized were peer mentors,
who provide additional support for students in the program.
