Hertfordshire: your campus, your home
Studying at HIC and University of Hertfordshire means
you will be living on the very edge of London. It is a
stunningly beautiful part of the UK, with many picturesque
riding bridleways, cycle trails and walks that link together
the county’s historic towns and villages. One of these,
Hatfield, is home to the university.
Old Hatfield retains many historic buildings,
the most notable being Hatfield House.
Elizabeth Tudor (later Queen Elizabeth I of
England) was confined here for three years
in what is now known as The Old Palace in
Hatfield Park. The area is also recognised
for its role in global aircraft manufacture
due to the establishment of the De
Havilland airfield and aircraft factory in Hatfield in 1930. During the next two decades De Havilland produced the
world-famous Gypsy Moth and Tiger Moth
biplanes, the Mosquito fighter bomber and
the world’s first jet airliner, the Comet.
From Hatfield it is only a 30-minute train
journey to Central London. Many local
residents commute to the city for work or for social events on a daily basis, while enjoying the relaxed lifestyle that
Hertfordshire offers. It is truly the best of both worlds.
London is a dynamic and exhilarating city, where you can enjoy a wide variety of entertainment, shopping and cultural or sporting activities. In 2012 it will also
host the Olympic Games. It comes as no
surprise that London is consistently rated
as one of the most exciting cities in the
world to visit.

StudyNet
University of Hertfordshire leads the way in the use of networked electronic
systems to support learning and teaching.
The University’s virtual learning environment,
StudyNet, provides every student with online
access to information relevant to their
studies. You will be allocated your own
individual web space, which is customised
for your programme of study. This will link you
to course descriptions, lecture notes and
other course materials, online discussions,
and opportunities for group work. HIC offers
its own version of StudyNet to introduce you
to elements of the university’s interactive
e-learning environment.
Learning Resource Centres
University of Hertfordshire’s two hi-tech
LRCs include a total of 2,600 study spaces
and 1,800 computer workstations. The
impressive 11,000m2 College Lane Campus

Pathways available at HIC
HIC is an Associate College of University of Hertfordshire,
offering students a modern and dynamic educational
experience. We are committed to providing educational
pathways and support services in an environment that
encourages you to achieve excellence in your studies.
Undergraduate pathways
An undergraduate pathway is a single
course comprising four stages of study.
When you successfully complete the
pathway you will be awarded a bachelor
degree from University of Hertfordshire.
Depending on your chosen pathway, you can begin your studies in September/
October, February or June.
University Foundation
University Foundation is Stage 1 of the
undergraduate pathway. The transition
from high school to university is a big step,
perhaps the most important in your life.
HIC’s University Foundation is carefully
designed with this in mind. The staff at
HIC will provide you with ongoing
guidance and support, as well as the
knowledge and skills support you need to
succeed in your future university studies.
First Year Degree
First Year Degree is Stage 2 of the
undergraduate pathway. During this stage
you will experience the equivalent of the
first-year curriculum of a University of
Hertfordshire bachelor’s degree, but with
smaller class sizes and extra academic
contact hours. Computer Science, Science
and Engineering and Mass Communications
students will join the first-year degree
classes with University of Hertfordshire
students, with extra tutorial support from
HIC. Law students will move from the
University Foundation at HIC directly into the degree course at University of Hertfordshire. The teaching and learning
experience will enable you to fully develop
your knowledge and understanding of each
module to prepare you for the remaining
stages of your pathway.
Second Year Degree
Stage 3 of the undergraduate pathway is the second year of your degree, which is taught at University of Hertfordshire.
Final Year Degree
Stage 4 of the undergraduate pathway is
the third (final) year of your degree, which
is taught at University of Hertfordshire.
Postgraduate pathway
A postgraduate pathway is a single
programme comprising two stages of
study. When you successfully complete
this pathway you will be awarded a master degree from University of Hertfordshire.
You can start your postgraduate pathway
in October or June.
Pre-Masters
The Pre-Masters is Stage 1 of the
postgraduate pathway and takes one
semester. It has been designed to prepare
international students who have not
qualified for direct entry to University of
Hertfordshire’s masters degrees, including
the MA Human Resource Management;
Master of Business Administration (MBA);
MSc Accounting and Financial
Management; MSc International Business;
MSc Management; MSc Marketing; and
MSc Project Management.
Undertaking a pre-masters will give you
time to adjust to the rigorous research and independent study requirements of a
UK postgraduate degree. This will ensure
you get the most out of your masters
studies at University of Hertfordshire.
Masters
Your masters degree is Stage 2 of the
postgraduate pathway, and is taught at University of Hertfordshire.
Intensive English Language
Intensive English Language is a full-time
programme specifically designed for
international students who need to
improve their English proficiency before
starting their undergraduate or
postgraduate studies.
The programme, which HIC offers at
University of Hertfordshire’s College Lane
campus, is designed for students with
different levels of English competence.
You can start Intensive English Language
in October, February or June.

Undergraduate pathways at HIC

HIC’s undergraduate pathways are tailored to your choice
of degree. For example, if you have chosen to pursue a
Computer Science degree you will study relevant Computer
Science modules from the start of your pathway. This will
allow you to gain the necessary background knowledge
and study skills to excel in your degree.
During your undergraduate pathway you will have access to all of University of Hertfordshire’s modern, well-equipped
teaching and library facilities, sporting and recreational amenities and on-campus accommodation.

University of Hertfordshire Business School prides itself on
its high-quality teaching and state-of-the-art teaching and
learning facilities. The school is rated as ‘Excellent’ by the
Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) for
the teaching of business and management, economics,
and tourism. Strong partnerships with business schools
in Europe, North America, the Far East and Australia add

Law
University of Hertfordshire’s School of Law is one of
the largest and most innovative law schools in the country,
frequently ranked among the top five law schools of modern
UK universities. In 2010 the Complete University Guide
named University of Hertfordshire the best modern
university for Law in London and the Home Counties.
The School of Law has recently moved to a
new purpose-built centre at the De Havilland
campus. The school is host to a range of
specialist law facilities including a simulated
courtroom, a 24/7 Learning Resources
Centre featuring a specialist law library, and
hi-tech computing suites with online access
to legal and commercial databases.
Based within easy reach of St Albans
Crown Court and local legal practices, the
school is able to successfully manage its
community partnerships through
professional work-based training, which
allows students to apply their studies to actual cases with guidance from
experienced solicitors. The school also
boasts a wide range of co-curricular
activities such as law clinics, street law,
public lectures and mock trials. Students
also have the opportunity to gain valuable
experience and academic credit working as legal advisers in the Professional
Work-based Learning module.

Computer Science and IT
In 2011 The Guardian ranked University of Hertfordshire
among the top 40 UK universities for Computer Science.
The university’s School of Computer Science is one of
the largest of its kind in the UK, and one of the most
established. It has educated thousands of students since
the 1960s, laying the foundations for them to go on learning
new skills throughout their careers. The school offers a
wide range of courses, which blend academic excellence
with vocational relevance.
The School’s academic staff are highly
qualified, many with extensive experience in research or industry.

Chirag Malhotra, from Calcutta, started his career in
motor sports in 2004 at the age of 13. In 2009 Chirag
was selected to race for the Red Rooster Karting team
in his home country of India. By 2011, Chirag had enrolled
with HIC and commenced his degree studies at the
De Havilland Campus, University of Hertfordshire.

Each year through the Navitas academic
merit scholarship programme, 162 scholarships
are awarded worldwide to students
currently studying in our university
pathway colleges and managed campuses.
Navitas bursaries and scholarships
Navitas family bursaries
Navitas offers financial support in the form
of family bursaries. A bursary applies where
two or more students from the same family
study with a Navitas member institution.*
The first family member can be studying
with a Navitas member institution at the
same time as other family members, or
they may have previously studied with any
Navitas member institution. The bursary
is granted to the second and subsequent
family members who study with a Navitas
member institution. For the purpose of
this bursary, a family member is defined
as a husband, wife, brother, sister, mother,
father, son, daughter or stepchild.
The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent
of tuition fee for the first attempt at units
or courses in the programme of study
(ie a certificate, diploma, University
Transfer Programme (UTP), University
Pathway Programme, bachelor’s degree,
pre-master’s programme, postgraduate
qualifying programme or master’s degree)†
with a Navitas member institution (excluding
the Mixed English option).‡ This amount
is credited to the eligible student’s tuition
fee account each academic term, with the
amount being relevant to the number of
units undertaken in that term. The bursary
applies to the first program of study only
undertaken at a Navitas member institution
and does not apply to additional units or
repeat units that may also be undertaken.
A completed application must be submitted
to the Navitas institution where the second
family member is studying, together with
supporting documents such as a birth
certificate or family card.^ Application
forms can be obtained from the Navitas
institution where the student has enrolled.

Curtin Singapore, CRIC, EIBT, EIC, Eynesbury, FIC,

Navitas academic
merit scholarships
Navitas is committed to helping students
achieve their career goals by offering
scholarships to outstanding students.+
Navitas academic merit scholarships
are awarded each term by each Navitas
pathway college or managed campus. Two
students with the highest GPA in four or
more subjects or courses will each receive
a scholarship.
The scholarships cover:
• one academic term or part thereof at a
Navitas member institution (equivalent to
the tuition fees for a maximum of up to
five academic subjects or courses) for:
- a diploma, advanced diploma or
associate degree (Australia)
- UTP Stage II or associate
degree (Canada)
- UPP or IUTP (United States)
- undergraduate pathway programme
(United Kingdom); or
• one semester of undergraduate study at
ACN, Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore or
Macquarie city campus; or
• one semester of a master’s programme
at Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore or
Macquarie city campus.
The scholarships are applied to the
tuition for the second term of enrolment
only or the final semester of study in
an undergraduate or postgraduate
programme. Students must be enrolled
as a full time student to qualify for
the scholarships.
The scholarship panel from each Navitas
member institution will announce the
recipients of the Navitas academic merit
scholarships upon the completion of each
term and the release of the results. The
recipients will be notified by mail and the
successful students posted on the college
website by consent. Students are not
required to apply for the scholarship, as it is
awarded based on academic performance
and all students are eligible.
Scholarship policy
1. Two scholarships for one academic
term’s tuition are offered at all Navitas
member institutions each.
2. Where the Academic Assessment
Committee must differentiate
between equally qualified applicants,
additional factors such as educational
disadvantage, membership of a specific
equity group and/or significantly
adverse personal circumstances may be
taken into account.
3. Students are eligible to qualify for
the scholarships after successful
completion of their first term and after
commencing their second term.
4. Students can only be awarded the
scholarship once.
5. Students already in receipt of a
scholarship may not be eligible for
the Navitas scholarship.
6. Students are required to pay for any
additional courses or subjects or
courses undertaken that are over the
amount covered by the scholarship.

Orientation programme
When you join us at HIC, your first week will be spent getting to know your fellow
classmates, meeting our staff and adjusting
to your new life in the UK.
If you are interested in getting involved in sports and societies, University of
Hertfordshire is the place to be. It has
some of the best sport and recreational
facilities available at any UK university.
These include pitches, courts, sports halls,
a swimming pool, a gym and a climbing
wall. There are over 100 student clubs and societies available, covering everything
from the Afro-Caribbean to the Youth
Excellence societies.
Counselling and support
University of Hertfordshire offers an
excellent confidential counselling service
and a dedicated medical centre, both
based at the College Lane campus.
International student advisors are also
available to give you free advice on issues
such as housing, welfare and immigration.
Multi-faith Centre
The Key Centre is a multi-faith and
multicultural centre, situated in a quiet area
on the College Lane campus. It is the focal

Accommodation
If you hope to live on campus, HIC offers places
in University of Hertfordshire’s halls of residence
for those wishing to live on campus. These are
low-rise, modern buildings on both the College
Lane and De Havilland campuses.
Alternatively, HIC can help to arrange
off-campus accommodation for you through its preferred service providers. This accommodation consists of modern
apartments and townhouses, ideally located within a short walking distance of either campus. On-campus accommodation:
single rooms in halls of residence
These rooms are usually only available for
stays of one semester (16 weeks). Availability
is limited, so be sure to apply early. In this
accommodation you will have your own room containing a single bed, desk, cupboard
and washstand. Students may either share
bathroom facilities or have their own en-suite
facilities. All halls of residence have a large
shared self-catering kitchen and free
broadband internet access.
If you would like to continue staying in halls of
residence for longer than one semester, please
be aware that availability is subject to demand.
Many students find that one semester living in halls of residence is long enough to make
friends and adjust to local life, and they would
like to experience life off campus.
Off-campus accommodation:

HIC provides a referral service to a preferred
accommodation provider for all students
(new and continuing) who would like to live off campus. The service ensures that
HIC students are able to find modern,
high-quality, privately rented accommodation
near the College Lane campus or within the
new residential development next to the De
Havilland campus. The service involves
support and assistance from the property
manager, who is available 24 hours a day in
case of emergencies. The property manager
is also responsible for maintenance, repair
work and housing inspections.

Reserving accommodation
Once you have accepted an offer to study at HIC you may then wish to ask HIC to
arrange your accommodation. To reserve
your preferred accommodation, you must
complete an Accommodation form and pay a non-refundable deposit of £800. This deposit covers:

Cost-of-living guide
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) requires
students to be able to demonstrate minimum
subsistence funds of £600 per month while
they are in the UK. The money you will need

Financial conditions: application
2.1
All applicants must have satisfied HIC that
they have acceptable sources of funding for
the duration of the pathway. See the Student
Visa Information on the website HIC.navitas.
com (information is also attached to the
Acceptance of Offer Form and Provisional
Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS)
Statement) for further information and links.
2.2
All fees, charges and accounts will be payable in advance as determined by HIC. All applicants are required to make advance
payments inclusive of
• the Course Fee Deposit – the amount is
specified in the Acceptance of Offer Form
and all deposits are taken as payment

3.0
Financial conditions and refunds:

Conditions:
3.1.1 The laws pertaining to money laundering in the UK require that any payment made to and
confirmed as received by HIC will only ever be refunded to the person making the original
payment in the source country of the payment.
Where an accommodation deposit has been
paid to the College which is then transferred
to a third party (the actual provider of
accommodation) with the approval of the
student or parent/legal guardian; the deposit
is then subject to the terms and conditions for refund of the third party and the College
therefore has no further liability or responsibility
for any refund.
3.1.2 HIC reserves the right to return to source any excessive payment, consisting of over
three semesters’ advanced payments,
inclusive of course fees and/or student
accommodation fees, as a preventative
measure to any excessive money transfer into and within the UK.
3.1.3 HIC accepts no responsibility for any
miscommunication that may arise where
inaccurate applicant contact details have
been provided or where such details are out of date. It is the responsibility of applicant,
and the parent/legal guardian where an
applicant is under the age of 18 years, to
provide and confirm correct contact details
for communication purposes.
3.1.4 HIC reserves the right to correct any clerical
details or omissions.
3.1.5 HIC accepts no responsibility for any loss or
damage, including and without limitation, direct
or consequential loss or damage or any loss or damages whatsoever arising from the terms
and conditions of payments and refunds.
3.1.6 All payments are subject to the following conditions:
• the payee is authorised to use the payment
method used;
• a payment must be confirmed as having
reached the HIC Citibank account for it to
be deemed as a payment; and
• where a card provider declines or refuses
a payment or where incorrect details have
been provided by the payee and a payment
does not reach the HIC Citibank account,
HIC has no obligation to notify the payee
or applicant and accepts no liability for any losses.
3.2 International applicants:
3.2.1 HIC reserves the right to retain any payments
or advanced payments made by an applicant,
inclusive of fees, charges or outstanding
accounts, where documents or information
submitted to HIC or the University of
Hertfordshire are suspected to be fraudulent
or deemed to be purposefully misleading in
content. This may be applied
• where an applicant accepts an
Unconditional Offer of a place at HIC by
completing the Acceptance of Offer Form
and making the required payment (inclusive
of the Course Fee Deposit) to HIC/the
University of Hertfordshire; or
• where a CAS number has been applied for or a CAS Statement issued by HIC /the
University of Hertfordshire on behalf of an applicant; or
• where an applicant has obtained entry
clearance and/or leave to remain under an HIC /the University of Hertfordshire
CAS number/Statement.
3.2.2 Where an applicant makes payment/s to HIC against a Conditional Offer of a place at HIC, but
• is unable to meet the conditions of the
Conditional Offer by the date stipulated; or
• formally withdraws and informs the HIC
Admission Office of their decision within
three months of receipt of the initial
payment; then
a refund of advanced payment on course fees, inclusive of any student
accommodation fees paid, can only be made where information submitted by the applicant or agent is not suspected of fraudulent activity or deemed as
purposefully misleading, see para. 3.2.1.

course of study and confirmed as received
by HIC, will only be made to the person
making the original payment in the source
country of the payment.
3.2.3 Where an applicant accepts an

• a copy of the rejection letter received
from the UK diplomatic mission (the Entry
Clearance Officer);
• evidence that the visa application was
made within time and valid application
conditions; and
where information submitted by the
applicant or agent is not suspected of fraudulent activity or deemed as
purposefully misleading, see para. 3.2.1.
3.2.5 HIC reserves the right not to offer a course
of study/module previously made available,
at its own discretion. Where an applicant is
unable to enrol in a similar pathway of study
at HIC, due to cancellation by HIC, then a
refund of the advanced payment on course
and student accommodation fees can only
be applied where:
• an applicant has provided evidence that
they are no longer in the UK and that
their student visa has been cancelled; or
• they have moved to and been accepted to another Tier 4 licensed
educational establishment.

are not eligible for a refund of any payments
already made in respect of all fees, charges

3.2.7 Where a CAS number has been applied for or a CAS Statement issued by HIC/the
University of Hertfordshire on behalf of an
applicant and they have gained a student visa
on this basis, and where an applicant fails to
enrol then they are deemed to be in breach of their student visa and they are not eligible
for a refund of any payments already made in respect of all fees, charges and accounts.
3.2.8 Deferral of enrolment of an applicant to HIC
will not normally be permitted. However,
there will be exceptional circumstances
under which HIC Learning and Teaching
Board may grant a deferral of up to one
semester; where a CAS number has been
applied for or a CAS Statement issued by
HIC/the University of Hertfordshire on
behalf of an applicant and they have gained
a student visa on this basis, and where an
applicant can provide binding evidence that
• they are not in the UK; and
• the request/reason for deferral is fully
supported by documentary evidence.
Deferred applicants are not eligible for a
refund of any payments already made in
respect of all fees, charges and accounts.
3.3 EEA or Swiss national applicants:
3.3.1 HIC reserves the right to retain any
payments or advanced payments made by
an applicant, inclusive of fees, charges or
outstanding accounts, where documents or information submitted to HIC or the
University of Hertfordshire are suspected to
be fraudulent or deemed to be purposefully
misleading in content.
3.3.2 Where an applicant makes payment/s to
HIC against a Conditional Offer of a place at HIC, but
• is unable to meet the conditions of the
Conditional Offer by the date stipulated; or
• formally withdraws and informs the HIC Admission Office of their decision
within three months of receipt of the
initial payment being made; then
a refund of advanced payment on course fees, inclusive of any student accommodation
fees paid, can only be made where information
course of study and confirmed as received by
HIC, will only be made to the person making
the payment.
3.3.3 Where an applicant accepts an

3.3.5 Deferral of enrolment of an applicant to HIC will not normally be permitted. However, there will be exceptional circumstances under which the HIC Learning and Teaching Board
may grant a deferral of up to one semester
where an applicant can provide binding
evidence that the request/reason for deferral
is fully supported by documentary evidence.
Deferred applicants are not eligible for a
refund of any payments already made in
respect of all fees, charges and accounts.
3.4 Administration Charge
3.4.1 HIC reserve the right to charge an
administration fee of £250 for any refund
request or associated transaction made.
