German Heritage Language School of Nova Scotia NEWSLETTER February 2013 Dear Parents, Friends, Students and Teachers: The winter term is well under way now, and so far we’ve been lucky with no school cancellations due to weather. We’ve had a few changes with teachers this term. We would like to thank Annika Gnann and Agne Kubiliute who have taught the youngest children’s class for a few years and are now moving on to other endeavours. Thank you both for your creative talents with the children. Glen Ratten, father of Anni Claire in Children’s 1, is now teaching this class with the assistance of helpers Florence Wallace and Undine Guenther. We also have Florence’s brother Alistair Wallace as a helper in the Children’s 2 Class, joining Nadine ElHousseiny and Julia Lerche. Angelika Storost has taken the helm of the Adult Beginner 1 Class and Mallory Clarke who had been teaching that class will act as a substitute for the school as required. The Christmas Basket was won by lucky Juergen Riedel, who apparently bought only one ticket! Thank you to all who bought tickets in support of the school. Upcoming on February 7 is our Fasching celebration also known as Fastnacht, Karneval or Mardi Gras. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland there are centuries old traditions for Fasching involving masks, costumed processions, parties and special foods to fend off the winter doldrums and usher in the new season. In our school the children make masks or hats and also sometimes wear costumes and parade through the adult classes. Always a delight to see!
