The Northern Face - Clinical International Health - Bernhard
University Medical Centre Hamburg
Call for Abstracts
The Department for Tropical Medicine in the University
Medical Centre Hamburg is the largest treatment unit for
tropical diseases in Germany. Inpatients with infectious and
tropical diseases are treated in the 26-bed unit within the
University Medical Centre while the outpatient centre is
located within the building of the Bernhard Nocht Institute.
For highly contagious haemorrhagic fever infections like
Ebola and Lassa, the Treatment Center for Highly
Contagious Diseases (BZHI) comprising six isolation beds
has been established. In- and outpatients directly benefit
from core basic and clinical research paired with excellent
care provided by dedicated health care professionals with a
patient-orientated focus and a close co-operation with
various medical departments like gastroenterology,
rheumatology, pneumology and many other partners. The
section is involved in various research projects both in
returning travellers as well as in endemic developing
countries. Some of the research focuses include vaccines,
malaria and gastrointestinal infections.
For poster presentations please submit abstracts (300 words)
in English to schlage@bnitm.de on clinical observational studies
and trials as well as on case reports.
The organizers will select abstracts for short oral presentations.
Submission deadline is December 31, 2012.

The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine is
Germany's largest institution for research, services and
training in the field of tropical diseases and emerging
infections. The present scientific focus is on malaria,
haemorrhagic fevers, tuberculosis and tissue nematodes.
To study highly pathogenic organisms and infected insects,
the institute is equipped with laboratories of highest
biosafety levels. It comprises the German National
Reference Centre for the diagnostics of all tropical
pathogens and a WHO Collaborating Centre for
haemorrhagic fever viruses. Together with the Ghanaian
Ministry of Health and the University of Kumasi, it runs a
modern research and training centre in the West African
rainforest.

Dear collegues,
It is our great pleasure to invite you to a symposium on
Clinical International Health - The Northern Face to be
held at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical
Medicine, Hamburg, January 24-25, 2013.
Clinical international health in Northern countries
comprises a broad variety of disciplines ranging from
travel medicine to co-operations for clinical care in
resource-poor settings. More than other health services,
it seems to be facing new challenges. Not long ago, for
example, bridging with health facilities in endemic areas
experienced a paradigm shift from interventions against
acute infections towards continuous care for chronic
diseases, and more recently, the menace of arbovirus
epidemics imported into moderate climates has reemerged after decades of rest.
For these and other reasons, clinical international
health is a specialty that cuts across the fragmentation of
medicine and other health-related sciences - and,
therefore, should have a special structure in Northern
health services and academia. To discuss this issue, we
cordially invite you to join us in Hamburg.
We are proud of a number of renowned speakers
who accepted to present their points of view. Likewise,
we heartly welcome young colleagues to submit
abstracts of their work for poster presentations and
selected short talks.
