As a Parade sponsor, FTD oversees the floral decor of the antique automobiles and carriages which carry the Rose Parade VIP’s down Colorado Boulevard. TOURNAMENT OF ROSES FUN FACTS * Six thousand stems of flowers and foliage * Flowers extend a total length to exceed twenty football fields * Adds three hundred pounds per vehicle * Features twenty types of botanicals per car | carriage * Requires more than one thousand man hours * This project is led by Texas’ own J. Keith White AIFD CFD Beginning in 1994, Keith began his adventure with the Tournament of Roses Parade. In 2007, he was named lead Rose Parade Designer of the VIP vehicles by FTD. Over the past eight years he has been setting standards that capture all whom attend the parade on New Year’s Day as well as the millions who view the beauty on televised broadcast. Incorporating complex and intricate design techniques upon a spectrum of museum class automobiles, carriages, fire engines, not to mention a first for the Budweiser wagon is only part of the responsibility. As the keeper of the Tournament of Roses “tie point,” which is the secret decorating method passed down years ago from Pasadena, CA florist Jacob Maarse, Keith holds close the floral design mechanics required to assure stability and the required protection for the vehicles and carriages. The florals are exquisitely placed, similar colors and types with slightly changing shades that create the dramatic effect and impact as well as a feeling of motion. His attention to detail and sense of style is witnessed in each and every presentation. The cars are selected by the Tournament of Roses VIP Entries Committee with special requests honored from the Tournament President, also keeping in mind the number of people that will ride in the vehicle. “Once these decisions are made by the Tournament, my work begins” shares White. “Each car is detailed in an overall design with special elements to reflect the personality of the VIP. The color palette is specified and the flowers and foliage are selected. I can see it all before I arrive.” The inspiration comes each year from those that are selected to ride in the cars. Sticks of butter were placed the year Paula Dean was Grand Marshall, chimpanzees the year of Jane Goodall, and most recently Olympic Rings for Louis Zamperini. Floral placement and design become a part of the vehicle, it is important not to lose the integrity of the vehicle. A majority of the flowers are processed through FTD Flower Exchange and wet shipped directly to the tent work area. With a team of Tournament of Roses Student Ambassadors always on hand, Keith and his helpers work tirelessly to complete the process. Keith is a member of Texas State Florists’ Association, Texas Cup Winner 1993, and AIFD, which he has presented four National Symposium Programs, and he represented FTD / United States in the Interflora World Cup design competition in Shanghai, China in 2010. From there he went to share floral bouquets at a friend of the family’s Farmer’s Market stand and that led to questions such as “Do you do weddings?”, “What made you put those colors together?” to “Do you want to buy a flower shop?” A friend of a friend needed to sell and after seeing the store he purchased Fanfare of Flowers the very next day paving the way to four locations in northern suburbs of Detroit only a few decades ago. As time went on Rocky Pollitz extended an invitation that he become part of the Teleflora Education Specialists Team. With this came opportunities to sell the four stores one at a time and join the staff as General Manager of a five million dollar operation where he learned quickly the difference in large volume retail. This experience led him to open Blumz by JR Designs with two locations in Ferndale and downtown Detroit for now fourteen years. Challenges over these days have made him stronger and well aware of the need to step out of the design room and constantly evaluate. “To be aware of your surroundings is of upmost importance. Over the past eight years four very large floral businesses have opened in Ferndale but none that offer the shopping experience that Blumz does.” shared Jerome. “Working to offer product or a design style that a client simply cannot get anywhere else is the key. We offer a luxury line that sets us apart.” Blumz has also learned the need to adjust to client’s needs. During the recession and troubling times in Detroit it was mandatory and today they still do so when needed. Offering something in everyone’s budget is a must! People appreciate it when you recognize their needs and adjust accordingly. “We have also learned that people do business with people they know so we encourage our employees to be involved in the community and to have fun!” Jerome through his support of the Chamber of Commerce, his participation in Rotary, and Special Events is all about community. He leads by example which makes all the difference in his employee’s enthusiasm to participate. The team aspect of the flower shop is what it is all about. Educating the sales team to sell so that the designers may create what the delivery personnel can easily deliver. It is a team! Not only did stunning art decorate the walls, creative and unique fresh floral designs flowed throughout the museum. TSFA was invited to participate in this biennial event that is presented by River Oaks Garden Club, The Garden Club of Houston, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The purpose of a floral show is threefold: to set standards of artistic and horticultural excellence; to broaden knowledge of horticulture, floral design, conservation, photography and other related areas; and to share the beauty of a show with fellow club members and with the public. TSFA members, Maria Elisa Maxit, Rob Smith, Mary McCarthy, and Darryl Murchison, displayed works of art in the division Art by Invitation – Fantasy Friends. Each designer created a floral design to compliment the assigned major work of art. TSFA President Susan Weatherford stated “TSFA was extended an invitation by those chairing Florescence to design in Art by Invitation and judge several design related competitive classes. Texas Floral Showcase Travels to Temple Written by Texas Floral Showcase Local Chair Norman Northen TMFA The second Texas Floral Showcase took place on March 24th, at the Hilton Garden Inn’s Grand Ballroom in Temple, Texas. Attendees were from the Dallas, Metroplex, Central Texas and as far away as the Houston area. Twelve vendors showed their newest products in the Product Gallery around the concourse of the ballroom before the dinner was served. Guests were greeted by Texas Floral Events Chair Lynn Lary McLean AAF AIFD PFCI TMF, TSFA President Susan Weatherford, and Showcase Chair Norman Northen TMFA. Northen After a superb meal, J Schwanke AAF AIFD CFD PFCI TMF took the stage with the program “Basics 101...Anything but Basic”. It was anything but basic! The audience was wowed with so many quick, easy, and cost effective ideas for any flower shop to use on a daily basis. All went away with the new and exciting projects and new products to teach and show to their staff back home. The stemmed gardenias were my personal favorite! J always leaves you wanting more. TSFA President Susan Weatherford | Texas Floral Events Coordinator Lynn Lary McLean Floral Design Flourishes in High Schools across Texas TSFA Certification Testing Increases to over 1,400 It is spring in Texas and all across the state, TSFA’s Education Committee tested over 1,400 students for the Level 1 Floral Design Certification. Shawn Coyle TMFA, Floral Design Teacher at Skyline High School in Dallas, hosts one of the five, Level 1 Certification testings annually sharing that “hosting allows him to highlight the four year floral program at Skyline High School.” Many of his floral design students participate in testing day by assisting with processing flowers, setting the testing area and the ever critical cleaning up afterwards! Shawn believes in the importance of the floral community and wants his students to be involved with the industry while still in school, as many of these students have a sincere desire to be employed in the floral industry upon graduation. TSFA Retail Director Bruce McShan, when interviewed by a Dallas TV station about his support of Skyline High School’s Floral Design Program, shared his beliefs in the floral design program and the effort that TSFA is making to build the industry work force in Texas through education. Bruce has employed over 100 Skyline floral design students. McShan’s and other retail flower shops across Texas work with local high schools to enhance the school’s floral career training program. The TSFA Board of Directors and Education Committee recognize that not all students who are in high school floral design classes and become Level 1 Floral Design Certified will enter the floral industry. Many will and have, but those that don’t will certainly prove to be a very educated floral consumer. Skyline’s Shawn Coyle’s belief in the program is strong sharing that “certification empowers the student. They know they have the ability to accomplish outside the classroom.” TSFA is providing education for an industry that needs a qualified workforce.
