Situated on the banks of the Dordogne, Argentat was
for centuries a major trading port. Traditional flatbottomed gabare boats once left from Quai Lestourgie
loaded with local products such as wood, leather

traditional stone, are lined with old houses bearing
lauze-stone covered towers and pepperpot roofs.

Built on a hill overlooking the Gorges du Coiroux, the
small town of Aubazine grew up around a Cistercian
monastery founded in 1135 by St Etienne and his
followers. The Canal des Moines (a 12C work of art) and

The name Turenne has gone down in history thanks to
the well-known Maréchal de France, who took the name
of his ancestral viscounty. Built on a hillock, the ruins
of the feudal castle and the Tour César dominate the

Although it was often besieged, Uzerche was never
taken. Nowadays, this fortified town with its numerous
towers, vaulted passageways and old houses adorned
with carved doorways is a unique site overlooking a
meander in the Vézère river.

Clunisian site
The medieval town of Beaulieu stands on the right bank
of the Dordogne river. Nicknamed the “Limousin Riviera”
because of its mild climate, the area is perfect for
strawberry cultivation. The St Pierre abbey church is all
that remains of the Benedictine abbey founded here in
the 9C. Of particular interest is the tympanum depicting
the Last Judgement, one of the finest in France.

Pompadour

This small town is famous for its castle, which was
given by Louis XV to his mistress Jeanne Le Normant
d’Etiolles. Pompadour is also renowned for its National
Stud Farm and its Mare Farm, which is unique in

has been home to a Horse Institute since 1976, and is
the venue for several famous horse races.

Local farmers’ markets

Comprising between 15 and 25 farm producers
and local artisans, these “local farmers’ markets”
(Marchés des Producteurs de Pays) promote the
wealth and diversity of the products of the Corrèze. The
true shop window of the département, these markets
pride themselves on their direct contact between
producers and their customers. Hugely convivial in
atmosphere, the majority of these markets take place
on festive occasions and provide customers with an
opportunity to stay and enjoy the local products they
have purchased.
