ie schönsten Plätze in den Hamptons
haben einen Nachteil: Sie sind privat.
Wer keine guten und reichen Freunde
in New York hat, schlägt in Shinnecock (Amerikas ältestes Clubhaus, Baujahr 1892) oder in
Maidstone (gewaltiges Clubhaus direkt am
Atlantik) keinen Ball.
Die beste Alternative: Long Island National
in Riverhead, nur 60 Meilen von New York
City entfernt. Eine schwerreiche Familie aus
den Hamptons hat den Club vor wenigen
­Monaten gekauft und investiert nochmals
­gewaltig: in neue E-Carts und die Pflege der
Anlage. Der Kurs selbst ist eine Herausfor­
derung. Kein Wunder: Robert Trent Jones jr.
ist als Designer tätig. Einige Layouts hat er
für seinen neuen Platz in Chambers Bay bei
­Washington (US Open 2015) übernommen.
Die langen Par 4 rufen nach einem mutigen
Drivereinsatz, allerdings werden viele Spielbahnen zur Fahne hin immer schmaler, was
Präzision ­erfordert. Ein Schock-Hole ist die
Nummer 4 (Par 5): Vor dem zweiten Schlag
öffnet sich überraschend ein Canyon – dort
unten liegen ziemlich viele Bälle. Auch das
Par 5 auf der 18 ist heiss: Ohne drei Hot Shots
ist das verdeckte Grün nicht zu erreichen (539
Meter!). Zweite Platzempfehlung auf Long
­Island: der Montauk Downs bei Montauk.
Hier war Robert Trent Jones sen. der Designer, und auch er macht es uns nicht leicht:
Viele Bunker verderben das Score. Hobby­
golfer sollten angesichts der langen Bahnen
bescheiden bei «Weiss» aufteen.

he finest golf courses in the Hamptons
have one drawback: they’re private affairs. If you don’t have rich friends in
New York, you won’t be hitting any balls at the
Shinnecock Hills, which boasts America’s oldest clubhouse (dating from 1892), or the Maidstone, with its huge clubhouse standing right
beside the Atlantic.
The best alternative? The Long Island National in Riverhead, just 60 miles from New
York City. The club was acquired a few months
ago by a fabulously wealthy local family, and
they’re currently investing on a huge scale in
new e-carts and the course’s general care.
The course itself is a challenge. That’s not
surprising: it was designed by Robert Trent
Jones, Jr. And parts of its layout were also used
by this legendary designer for his recently built
Chambers Bay course in Washington state,
which will host the US Open in 2015.
The long par 4s call for a bold driver approach. But many fairways also narrow considerably closer to the pin, requiring sizeable precision as well. The 4th, a par 5, is a real “shock
hole”: just before the second shot a canyon
opens unexpectedly up, with a host of balls at
the bottom. And the 18th, a par 5, is quite an experience, too: at 539 metres, it demands three
very good strokes to reach the hidden green.
Our second recommendation on Long Island
is the Montauk Downs near Montauk. This
course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.,
and he’s provided his fair share of challenges
here, too, with numerous bunkers to play
havoc with the scorecard. Given the long fairways, amateurs are well advised to keep to the
“white” tees.
