service for the lord`s day approaching god
SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY OCTOBER 27, 2013 9 & 11 A.M. CENTERING THOUGHT Sacrifice, you made one. I made one. We all make them. But you are angry over yours. You kept thinking about what you lost… You didn’t get it. Sacrifice is a part of life. It’s supposed to be. It’s not something you regret. It’s something to aspire to. Little sacrifices. Big sacrifices. A mother works so her son can go to school. A daughter moves home to care of her sick father. (p. 93) Sometimes when you sacrifice something precious, you’re not really losing it. You’re just passing it on to someone else. (p. 94) Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom APPROACHING GOD WELCOME PRELUDE Teri Thomas Christ, Our Lord, to Jordan Came, BWV 684 J. S. Bach (1685-1750) *CALL TO WORSHIP Faith flows forth from the believers who surround us, As we gather here to worship God. Hope flows forth from the Word we hear, As we gather here to worship God. Trust flows forth from grace we experience, As we gather here to worship God. *HYMN NO. 297 In Christ Called to Baptize ST. DENIO *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Ruth Chadwick Moore There are times, O God, when our prayers come from our hearts, when we honestly and openly come before you in prayer. And there are times, O God, when our prayers do not come from our hearts, when we try to hide the truth of who we are. At those times, forgive us, God of mercy. There are times when we open our hearts to listen to your guidance, and there are times when we close our hearts, believing that we have all the answers. At those times, forgive us, God of mercy. There are times when we approach you in humility, and there are times when we come before you in judgment of others. At those times, forgive us, God of mercy. Hear us now, O God, as we offer you the confession of our hearts. *SILENT CONFESSION *DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS God’s love and grace flow from the font Washing over us, renewing and cleansing. They shall allow the word to stand and receive no thanks for it. He is surely with us on the field of battle, along with all his Spirit and gifts. If they take from us our body, goods, honor, child, and wife, let them go, they still have gained nothing; for the kingdom is ours forever. MUSIC IN WORSHIP Today’s Offertory (“Komm in mein Herzenshaus”) and Choral Response (“Das Wort sie sollen lassen stahn”) are the 4th and 8th movements of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata for Reformation, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A mighty fortress is our God), BWV 80. “Komm in mein Herzenshaus,” sung by Soprano, is set in a 12/8 dance-like meter, yet the overall mood is serene and spiritual. Note Bach’s word painting on the word “Weg” (Away) – the pitch on“Weg” is also thrown away. Bach uses a rich four part harmony setting of the chorale tune in “Das Wort sie sollen stahn.” The melody, heard in the soprano part, is well known, and exists in almost every Protestant hymnal in the world, and the hymn has become closely associated with Reformation Sunday. A Congregational Meeting has been called for today at 10:45am in the Sanctuary for the purpose of electing officers.
