These sophisticated labs are critical in the study of pathogens and diseases and provide graduate students and researchers with a safe space to conduct their hands-on research. The BSL-2 lab is designated for working with various bacteria and viruses that cause only mild disease to humans. In the BSL-3 lab, work is done with indigenous or exotic agents which may cause serious or potentially lethal disease after inhalation. It includes various bacteria, parasites and viruses that can cause severe to fatal disease in humans, but for which treatments exist, such as the West Nile Virus. To maximize the use of the space, the BSL-2 Laboratory features glass walls and doors with full lite glass to allow students and visitors to view the working lab without being at risk for exposure to various pathogens and diseases. Conference Room. The Palouse hills of Pullman, Washington are the home of Washington State University. WSU was founded in 1890 and is the state’s original and largest land-grant university. When land-grant institutions were founded, their mission was teaching practical agriculture, science, military science, and engineering in conjunction with classical studies. Finishes The interior finishes complement the expanses of exterior glass and keep the space bright and light. Wood is used throughout the building to help ground the space and provide visual interest and is paired with bold colors strategically throughout the building. Wood is used in various applications including ceilings, walls, and in the millwork. The phrase “team work” seems to be over used at times but it was especially applicable for this project. Good people working with good material make good things happen. Project Overview “Overall the project was challenging not only because of the economic climate, but also due to the site location adjacent to the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. We not only had to maintain access to the hospital at all times, we also had to be minimize noise, dust, and pollution as to not disturb the ill and recuperating animals in a nearby pasture,” explains Brenden Warren, Project Manager, Bouten Construction. “Before the project was even started, the level of quality demanded on the project was discussed in detail so all subcontractors knew what was expected of them, helping ensure the building was completed on time and under budget. Furthermore, Bouten Construction has worked previously with Builders’ Hardware and Supply Company and developed a good working relationship with them. So, when the doors arrived, we had very few issues with the product, making the installation process painless for our team,” notes Warren. From these agrarian roots, Washington State University has grown to be well known for its programs in veterinary medicine, agriculture, animal science, food science and plant science. The University has also been recognized by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as one of 96 colleges and universities in America with “very high research activity.” As WSU continues to grow and expand, so to does the University’s legacy of academics and research. Most recently with addition of the Paul G. Allen Center for Global Animal Health. Dedicated in the fall of 2012, the Center for Global Animal Health was built to accommodate the delicate research of emerging diseases that affect both humans and animals. Many infectious diseases are transmitted at the animal-human interface. At the Center for Global Animal Health, researchers have the facility and the tools to provide innovative disease transmission, control, and prevention solutions across the globe. The Facility Located on the southern edge of campus adjacent to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the Center for Global Animal Health is a state-of-the art biomedical research facility. The 62,000 square foot facility features laboratories, office space, and meeting rooms for over 100 research scientists and graduate students. The center is linked to partnering research facilities around the world including the Tanzania Campus. doors for the BSL-2 lab that feature a full lite.” explains Norm Jost, Territory Sales Manager, VT Industries. All of the wood doors feature “AA” grade plain sliced White Ash veneers. The doors’ stain is custom and matches the other millwork, offering consistency on all three floors of the building. “VT Industries was diligent and worked with the team not just to meet, but exceed, in perfectly matching the project’s finish color set forth by the architect,” explained Jost. Additionally, the doors had fire ratings that ranged from non-rated to 90-minutes to accommodate the life safety requirements of the space. Builders’ Hardware coordinated the doors and hardware requirements for all the openings within the building. Builders’ Hardware worked alongside Bouten Construction, the General Contractor, for installation services and to process submittals. “The phrase “team work” seems to be over used at times but it was especially applicable for this project. Good people working with good material make good things happen. Without the team work of many on this project it wouldn’t matter how good the material was, good things wouldn’t have happened,” notes Bob Larsen, AHC, and Vice President of Builders Hardware. Full Lite Door. VT manufactured the architectural wood doors throughout the Center for Global Animal Health and partnered with distributor Builders’ Hardware and Supply Company, Inc. of Seattle and Kennewick, WA. Several door types were selected for the job depending on the application. “A majority of the doors were flush wood veneer doors for classrooms and office spaces. VT also manufactured the About Builders Hardware & Supply Company, Inc. As valued VT CORE Distributor, Builders’ Hardware & Supply has been supplying commercial doors and frames to the Pacific Northwest since 1958. Tech Talk Consensus of Industry Standards Veneer Face Grade Minimum Flitch Leaf Width By Tom Hoffert Technical Development Manager Face Layup After years of differences and confusion between WDMA, AWI & WI Industry Standards for Architectural Wood Doors in regards to Premium Grade vs. Custom Grade, AA Grade vs. A Grade veneer, veneer component widths, solid wood vs. SCL stile backer etc., the standards are now in alignment with each other. The latest editions of WDMA I.S. 1A-11 & 6A-11 and the AWS-2009 with errata, adopted and jointly published by AWI, AWMAC & WI complement each other on all major components in the standards. See below for comparisons. SCL stile backer material is also approved by the AWS based on meeting WDMA TM 15 “Test Method for Determining the Vertical Edge Impact Resistance of Backing for WDMA I.S. If no aesthetic grade is specified “Custom Grade” is the default grade to be furnished per the standards. Note: Although “Premium Grade” is commonly specified in many architectural door specifications, this is the highest level available and is intended be reserved for special projects or featured areas within a project because to the high cost and limited availability of Grade AA veneers. WDMA I.S. 1A-11 & 6A-11 and AWS-2009 are primarily performance based rather than prescriptive based standards, allowing a wide variance of construction methods and component configurations, providing that the end product meets or exceeds the WDMA Performance Duty Level specified. (Standard Duty, Heavy Duty or Extra Heavy Duty) If no Performance Duty Level is specified, “Heavy Duty Level” is the default performance level per the standards. “Custom Grade” is the standard grade with Grade A veneer specified that is intended for most architectural buildings requiring high quality architectural woodwork with a well defined degree of control over workmanship, materials and 2 VT NEWS AWD Print Ad Overview VT Industries is up and running with a new print advertising campaign that delivers highly targeted messaging to key audiences.
