Light is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is visible to the human eye. The human eye can typically detect wavelengths between 400 nanometres (violet) to 700 nanometres (red). What we consider to be white light is actually a combination of light at different wavelengths within this spectrum, with the intensities of the different constituent wavelengths determining its apparent colour. As white light is formed by combining the wavelengths of the visible spectrum, its appearance can differ from one source to the next. Colour temperature is used to describe the relative appearance of ‘white’ light sources. The colour temperature of a lamp is determined by comparing it to the light given off by a heated ‘black body radiator’ (similar to heating a block of iron), the temperature in Kelvin(K) of the black body radiator at which it emits light that matches the hue of the lamp determines the colour temperature. A tungsten lamp (i.e. a typical household light bulb) will have a colour temperature of 2,800K whilst sunlight is typically 5,700K and scattered blue light from the sky 10,000K. By the time it has passed through the earth’s atmosphere the intensity of sunlight across the wavelengths of the visible spectrum approximates the curve below. On a bright sunny day in the tropics the sun will typically illuminate a surface to 100,000 Lux (Lux is measure of the intensity of light over a given area). By comparison a typical fluorescent lamp in an aquarium will only illuminate objects at the water surface to 14,000 Lux. Because of this difference in the levels of light available for plants and corals in nature to those kept in an aquarium, specialist lamps are required. 4 Photosynthesis The reason most plants have green leaves, is that they contain in their tissue a green pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is used in a chemical reaction, which converts water and carbon dioxide (absorbed from the atmosphere), into glucose, which is then converted into plant material. This chemical reaction is normally reliant on sunlight to take place – if there is insufficient light – which there would be with a normal fluorescent lamp – then the reaction doesn’t happen, and the plant will die. Photosynthesis does not utilise the full spectrum of sunlight, but only two wavebands, or colours, in the red and blue parts of the spectrum. This can be seen from the chart right. A fluorescent lamp is designed to emit light from Photosynthesis Curve the phosphor coating on the inside of the glass tube. Normally these phosphors are selected to so that the overall effect is to create a warm white light, but by mixing special phosphors, it is possible to change the spectrum of light emitted by the lamp. Selecting phosphors that produce light in the specific wavelengths required for photosynthesis, it is possible to produce a fluorescent lamp that is far more efficient at sustaining plant growth. Thus, although the lamp produces only a sixth of the brightness of sunlight, as far as the plant is concerned, it is far closer to sunlight levels, because the output is in the photosynthetic wavebands. Marine Photosynthesis Photosynthesis occurs in both freshwater and marine aquariums, and so specialist light sources are required in both. However, in marine aquariums, the salt water absorbs light in the red part of the spectrum (see graph below), so invertebrates have evolved to utilise light at the blue end of the spectrum. Thus, specialist marine light sources with spectral intensities concentrated in the blue part of the spectrum are required to sustain marine life. It helps to release oxygen as a by-product, promotes plant growth and helps to form carbohydrates, the basic food for all living organisms. The Fresh Water Lamp has been specially formulated to combine a uniquely created colour temperature, peaking in the green part of the spectrum. It also provides superb colour rendition, enhancing all the natural colours to be found within typical freshwater aquaria. • Accentuates reds and blues • Promotes plant growth • Optimum light for photosynthesis • Shows the rich greens of plants • Encourages plant growth • Brightens natural colours in fish 6 Fluorescent lamps 6W 8W 9W ** 11W ** 14W 15W 18W 24W 24W * 25W 28W * 30W 35W * 36W 38W 39W 45W * 54W 54W * 54W * 58W 80W 225mm 300mm 165mm 230mm 360mm 450mm 600mm 550mm 438mm 750mm 590mm 900mm 742mm 1200mm 1050mm 850mm 895mm 1150mm 1047mm 1200mm 1500mm 1450mm Original Tropical / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / 9” 12” 6.5” 9” 15” 18” 24” 22” 18” 30” 24” 36” 30” 48” 42” 34” 36” 46” 42” 48” 60” 58” * To fit Juwel ® Aquarium lighting units Fresh water Plant Pro T5 J5 ** Compact lamp T5 Plant Pro Lamp Metal Halide Lamp The T5 Plant Pro lamp has been specifically formulated to combine the red and blue spectral peaks of the original tropical lamp to support plant photosynthesis, with the higher light output of the freshwater lamp. The result is a lamp which is noticeably brighter than the original tropical, making it ideal for more demanding plant species. Metal Halide Lamps provide extremely high light levels from a compact source. The design of the lamp means that the light is emitted from a single point, which creates a rippling effect through the water that is impossible to achieve with fluorescent lamps. • Superior Plant growth • Enhance colours of fish and plants • Satisfy plant species with a higher light requirement – e.g. Lilleopsis • 5,200K colour temperature mimics normal sunlight • Excellent colour rendering • High light levels promote healthy plant growth LIGHTING FOR MARINE AQUARIUMS 7 Marine White 14,000K Lamps Marine Blue 420 Actinic Lamps The colour temperature and spectrum of the Marine White 14,000K Lamp, coupled with its high lumen output (particularly for the T5 lamps) replicates the intensity of the sun around shallow coral reefs. The Marine Blue 420nm Actinic lamp re-creates the effect of a moonlit ocean and brings out corals natural fluorescence. Unlike many competing products the Marine Blue Lamp peaks at 420nm, the optimum point in the spectrum for marine photosynthesis. • T8, High Output T5 and Compact TC-L Lamp versions available • Powerful penetrating white light • Accentuates natural fish colours • Colour replicates reef environment • T8, High Output T5 and Compact TC-L Lamp versions available • Near UVA light creates fluorescence • Promotes marine photosynthesis • Moonlight effect 8 Marine White Fluorescent lamps T8 15W 18W 24W 25W 30W 36W 38W 39W 54W 58W 80W 450mm 600mm 550mm 750mm 900mm 1200mm 1050mm 850mm 1150mm 1500mm 1450mm / / / / / / / / / / / 18” 24” 22” 30” 36” 48” 42” 34” 46” 60” 58” T5 Marine Blue T8 T5 Compact lamps 36W 55 W 415mm / 16” 533mm / 21” Metal Halide Metal Halide Marine White 14,000K Lamps Marine Blue 20,000K Lamp Metal Halide lamps provide extremely high light levels from a compact source.
